| | Half-Blood Prince video game composer interview & soundtrack preview
A new interview with the composer for the Half-Blood Prince video game soundtrack, James Hannigan, has emerged online. Quote:
"The biggest difference between games music and film music is really the function" says Hannigan.
"You have to remember that the gamer is both audience and participant - they're observing this world, they're watching a story, but they're also a participant in the story ".
Quote:
"It's about what's motivating the music" he says. " I like to consider issues about how the music gets used, and what the designers are trying to achieve with the game.
"To have a game where the music doesn't feel like an afterthought, you have to have the music as an integral part of the game design".
Quote:
"There has to be a similar approach to the music" says Hannigan. "I'll work some of the famous Hedwig's Theme into some of the music to identify it as Harry Potter - it's very much the game of the film".
Additionally musical tracks from the game can now be previewed here. The soundtrack will be available in full on March 17th. The tracklisting is as follows; Quote:

I like how he said some of this stuff.
Music in video games is different from the movies.

i like how they are really thinking about the music, and as a BTEC performing arts student, i've leant that the music can really change how something feels to the audience watching the drama, which in this case, the audience is the gamer. i can't wait for the game to come out, i'll be straight to game station to buy it
that last one made me laugh . . . friendship theme
I also very much like the video games (sometimes more than the movies) because they look like the movie characters and buildings, but they follow the books alot more than the movies can, because a video game doesn't have a 3 hour limit to it, they could try to have every part of the book in the video game, and the game being 28 hours to finish it in one go, but no one could say, No we can't have that.

Hmmm interesting interview! But I still don't really see the point of having a composer just for a video game-couldn't they just adapt the film music?

Not bad! But then again, the music is never a problem with Potter.. This guy seems to like lots of short bits of music...
Wonder if film will be similar?? Probably not...

He does use some bits but as the game is far longer than the film, that wouldn't work. Plus they follow different narratives. Quote:

Wow - they sound really quite epic!
The music from the DS OotP game is brilliant as it loads - so I hope this turns out as good!
The samples sound great though ![:D](https://www.snitchseeker.com/images/smilies/big_grin.gif)
I can't wait for the game, the previous ones have been among the best I've played!
