Video: Deathly Hallows: Part 2 behind-the-scenes look at Gringotts goblins prosthetic
Warner Bros Home Video sent SnitchSeeker an exclusive look at the making of the prosthetics for the Gringotts goblins from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Blu-ray combo set extras, as part of their The Goblins of Gringotts extras feature. In it, the makeup team, lead by Nick Dudman, discuss the intricate details, from the prosthetic faces to sewing in individual hairs to the goblins' heads, to make the creatures look more life-like. That can be viewed here.
Nick Dudman (creature effects director): On the first movie we did, I think, seven or eight prosthetic goblins and about 40 background pull on masks for Gringotts. On this one we’re doing 45 full prosthetic makeups and about 20 background heads. I wanted every single one to be different. So here we’re painting goblin hands, and goblin faces being painted.
Maxwell O’Toole (makeup artist/sculptor): We literally just carve in tiny, tiny little areas like this to try and build a skin texture up nice and slow.
Nick Dudman: This will be the biggest thing we attempt to do.
Adrian Rigby (wig artist): We’re making the wigs and knotting the hairs in one at a time. It’s a time consuming process.
Nick Dudman: Making one of these is fine. Running a system where you’re producing the numbers is actually what’s taking the time to figure out. It’s a production line.
