Minister's Office: Office of the Senior Undersecretary
Abandoned Building at 152 Whittaker StreetThe Minister's Office has temporarily relocated to this decrepit abandoned building. There are still plenty of charms in place to protect the Minister for Magic.
The conditions of the room are perhaps better than those in the Minister of Magic's Office but not very promising by a long shot. The Senior Undersecteray has set up his office on the east side of the building in a semi functional room. Much like in the rest of the building, the lights do not work however the wide window behind his desk provides him with the necessary, if not too much, lightening to get his work done.
All about the ground the scattered papers and dirt piles are a constant reminder of the exquisite office he's left behind. The cupboard to the corner rumbles and shuffles occasionally, an indication of its inhabitants. Merlin knows what's inside but the Senior Undersecretary isn't keen on finding out. The chair designated for visitors is no more comfortable than Gavin's and though he apologizes, there is nothing more he can do. Don't whine about the conditions, you're only visiting, he's stuck here for the entire day.

Unbelievable. How exactly did they expect them to get any work done when they had working conditions like these? She really thought it was bad on her level until she got to... well whatever this place was.
This was absolute dump. You'd think they'd spend some time to get it looking a little better, at least for the minister!
She knocked on the door of the Senior Undersecretary and waited.

There it went again. Whatever existed inside that cupboard was moving about. Sure he could have a look inside, find out what might have been setting his made in a tizzy but every time he convinced himself he would, the image of a mutant lunging out at him, devouring his face kept him in his seat. This was for the best. Whatever was inside wasn't bothering him and he could return that gesture.
The knock at the door drew his attention from the cupboard. His assistant hadn't told him about any meetings he had at this hour...whatever hour this was. Leaving his watch turned out to be an irksome mistake. He would need a clock added to the wall.
"Come in." He called, his eyes shifting right back to the cupboard. Distracting at it's best.

Layla wasted no time in entering the office. Outside was terrible and really, maintenance should be fired. They could at least!...AT LEAST, try to make the place look less like a bomb went off or a cornish pixie infestation had descended on them all.
Ugh...
"You need to tend to your staff Senior Undersecretary." At least the office she claimed at the back of her department cubicle area looked decent. "Hasn't maintenance been down here?" She almost forgot why she came with how deplorable everything looked.

He....needed to tend to his staff? That got an eyebrow raise at the woman as she entered. "I'm not sure I'm following you Mrs. Dacosta-McLaughlin." He vaguely remembered the run-in they'd had back when she was the size of a erumpent. What business brought her all the way across London to be telling him what he should and shouldn't be doing with his Staff. Gavin didn't even know the new location for International Cooporation something he needed to look into but here she'd found her way to him.
"I haven't had a chance to have a sit down with Mr. Cresswell. No." Hence the present condition. "I'd offer you a seat but I doubt you'd want it." He said, his hands in a wave of a gesture toward the questionable chair on the other side of his desk.
He was itching to lean back in his seat the way he normally did, but the structure of his own chair couldn't be trusted, leaving him to rest his elbows on the desk, hands clasped, eyes trained on her. "What can I do for you?"

"Tend to them, make sure they're doing their job.." And why in Merlin's name did they decide to force open the ministry if they'd have to deal with these deplorable conditions.
"Clearly.." she muttered under breath as she had a proper look around the room. "Well, as it were I'm expected to be entertaining diplomats from the far east....how can I entertain them when we have no ministry and the substitute looks like this?" It was a serious concern, one the undersecretary and maintenance needed to handle pronto.
Mr.Greingoth would have never let this happen. Nope, he was fine minister.
"I hope you know, you're making my job at the prophet as it relates to ministry matters increasingly difficult, Undersecretary."

It would seem his eyebrow had no hopes of lowering for now. Tending to them...so they would do their jobs? "You're mistaken. My employees don't need someone walking behind them checking their every move for them to be productive." The idea was almost offensive. What did she take his level for? A load of slackers looking for a reason to discontinue work? Hardly.
Ah yes, the visitors. He remembered getting word about them but there was no follow up. They were coming? He would have thought that given the current situation within the Ministry Mr. Yenorin would have held off until they could have the matter sorted but apparently not...? Lovely. How unprofessional would it be to inform her that it wasn't his problem that her Head of Department wasn't thinking clearly? "It is quite the fix I'll agree." One brought on by her own Department. "But I'm afraid that until we can have this thing figured out, the best you can do is try hosting the event in one of the more suitable Ministry Locations? Perhaps in..." He reached for a file at the edge of his desk and began flipping through, "the Wal-Market HQ? You could have something arranged with Ms. Carter." He continued flipping through the document containing all Ministry Level Locations. "Or perhaps your own Department's location? It says here you've got it decent enough at the The Harlequin Building." Both BETTER than right here. Geddit? "Outside of that I'm afraid there isn't much I can do until Accidents and Catastrophies takes a look at the Ministry's failing charms."
The matter seemed put to rest and he was about to offer to see her out but then she said that. Gavin did very little to hide his scowl. "I do apologize but I can't remember ordering the Ministry closed. These were unforeseen events. Hardly preventable." Yet another thing he could do nothing about. What part of his hands were tied did she not understand?

No he was mistaken (and wait did he think she meant his department?), but she really didn't want to get into that right now , especially not while they were in this...squalor or a place.
Breathing in all this bad air certainly couldn't be good.
Layla listened and the more she did the more she frowned. Sigh, why did she expect to hear any sort of a solution from this...gentleman standing in front of her? Whatever, he was probably still learning the ropes. "Of course not.." She said coolly. Of course he couldn't do anything, like pay Maintenance and A&C some extra mula so they could get the offices in tip top shape FASTER.
Hardly preventable? The only protection the ministry had was from muggles! Any and every Joe could easily gain and access and then..this..yes totally catastrophe.
"Well I suggest you find some way to cover your hide and the ministry's Undersecretary or the media will eat you alive. Good day." She turned on her heels and stepped over a piece of...well whatever it was and headed out the door.

Ashby was not a happy department head right now. How dare Gavin ask his employees to come and tour his department. That was not his job. And Ashby was not going to have random people come to tour his department. They had specialsied things going on. Nobody random from another department was going to be randomly coming to see how things worked.
The man frowned as he headed through level 1. It was interesting to say the least. But at least there was no rocking motion. He'd grown sick of that already. Once he got to the office, he knocked on the door. Gavin had better been in.

When emergencies of the 7 year old nature arrived the Senior Undersecretary had no choice but to let his Personal Assistant know he'd be stepping out for about half an hour. It didn't throw his schedule off by much to be needed back at the Daycare, not with the slow day they'd seen so far but he could think of a few documents he could have gone over in the time. Avery was fine, whiny and uncooperative but fine.
Stepping over the rubble strewn along the corridor, Gavin made his way back to his office. It occurred to him far too late that while he'd stopped by the Daycare he could have had a word with Mr. Cresswell and he decided he'd send an owl setting up a meeting once he was back inside.
Approaching his door, he found a visitor....? Oh? "Mr. Ashby." He greeted, stepping by him to push his door open. "Wasn't expecting you today, come in." Or stand out there. It was all the same to him.

No. He hadn't been expecting to come either. But some things needed to happen. And he really needed to talk to Gavin. Sure he liked his ex-employee. But he did not like the man sending people to look at his department. He shouldn't have even been talking about mysteries. They were unspeakables for a reason. "No... I was really expecting to need to come." He clearly was not a very happy man.
He walked into the office before turning to face Gavin. "Are you telling your employees they are free to get a tour of my department?"

Was he....was he taking a tone with him?
No, certainly not. One didn't walk into his office with a tone, it was absurd to even think it because Mr. Ashby, no matter what his complaint, would have taken the more civil approach. Gavin leaned against his desk, sizing up the man for a moment. His tone was enough to tell him the man was obviously upset about something but he was drawing a blank on what exactly.
If he was here to complain about his work area there was nothing the Senior Undersecretary could do. They'd all gotten the liberty to choose where they wanted to set up temporary office. If he wanted a ship then he was going to keep the damn ship until Aron and his men blew a way back inside the Ministry.
He didn't straighten when the man turned to him, instead he fixed him with an expectant look. Explanations were nice. He liked those.
"Nope." So that's what this was about. Gavin maintained a perfectly straight face but consider him amused. He remembered saying something of the sort but..."I said nothing about tours, in fact I believe I told Mr. Neves not to be bothering your employees while down there. Tours are out of the question. I don't suspect you're running a tourist attraction."

"No. I am not running a tourist attraction." They had very important business to attend to. And that did not involve giving tours to anyone who came onto his department. "You should understand that." Because the man had worked in the department. It had been part of the reason why had had been so surprised that these men said that Gavin had told them to come. Hopefully the man wasn't lying to him. Because he wouldn't be too impressed. Ashby was sure that Gavin wouldn't want people coming to tour his department, so Ashby knew he was okay to be like this.
"That man.... and his friend? William I believe it is are under the impression that they were be welcome when the department is less busy. That will not be happening and I wish you to forward that message."

Yeah...like he said, not running a tourist attraction. None of the Departments were....except maybe Games and Sports if you were looking at it from a literal standpoint, them being on a plane and all. Er, but he'd keep that to himself. The man didn't seem keen on jokes and Gavin was fine with not giving them where they wouldn't be appreciated to begin with.
"Believe me Mr. Ashby, I have full knowledge of the Department of Mysteries and the work and secrecy it entails. The last thing I wanted was to bring unwanted light to your Department." See? he could play nice. It wasn't that hard.
Oh and Mr. Neves had brought a friend. Interesting.
"Can't imagine where they might have gotten that idea from but I'll be sure to pass the message along to them for you. It's nothing you'll need to worry about I assure you. Leave it to me. I'll be sure to give them a lecture if I have to." A lecture on not getting caught. Merlin! How did one make it into a top secret place then end up having a conversation with the Head they were meant to be avoiding. Words needed to be had with them alright. Pitiful. He was sure they could do better than that.
He rather liked not having people take tones with him in his office, thanks.

Good. He was going to deal with it. Because Ashby would not be impressed if these two people came onto his ship again. If they did he would not hesitate to get them followed. Or arrested. Whichever suited him better.
"Okay... I better get back to my department." Because he had work to do. "Good day Gavin." And with that he left the senior undersecretary's office.

He looked only the tiniest bit amused by the thought, and shook his head to show he didn't mind at all. "This way, please." He turned around and headed towards the man's door. He walked with careful steps, because he didn't want to ruin his expensive shoes by stepping on a stupid insect. Once he was at the door, he stopped to the side for her to knock on the door.
"If you need anything else, my desk is there." He pointed to a desk in front of Minister's office, bowed with his head and walked towards it to keep trying to work here.
Madam? She'd been about to assert her dislike for the term, but considering Mr. Neves had been nothing but useful and exceptionally professional, she let it slide. The term wouldn't do her any harm... so he could live, this time.
"Thank you," she replied before stationing herself in front of Gavin's door. Shifting the bag of pastry from one hand to the other, while still gripping the carry tray of coffee, Emily managed to place a couple of well timed knocks on the door before distributing the pastries to her free hand again. She'd have simply let herself in, but because she couldn't be certain that he would be alone, she did the professional and polite thing, and knocked. Invading his office and insisting they have break together was one thing, invading his office in the midst of a meeting was something else entirely. If he was busy... she could always see him later, and keep the pastries and coffee to herself.

The knock at the door alerted him to his second visitor of the day. Two of them? In the space of half an hour? Did no one think he might have needed a solid break--much longer than the half an hour of solitude? The Senior Undersecretary might have needed maybe an hour after that visit with Mr. Summers which reminded him, he needed to have a word with Mr. Neves.
The way he saw it, he had two choices, magick the door open and risk the entire wall collapsing....or opening the door manually with the risk of only the door becoming unhinged.
Yeah....Gavin launched himself off his desk he'd still been leaning against even after the exit of his last visitor and headed for the door. With a careful twist of the knob he pulled the door open, his face lighting up notably. She would never understand how happy he was that she'd turned up at his door and not another member of her security division. That might have permanently set his day south.
He stuck his head through the doorway, just checking she was alone so that him pulling her into the office and closing the door wouldn't be rude. "My first pleasant surprize all morning."

There were no noises coming from inside, though that could have been by design, but as far as she could tell - whether from the evidence or intuition, Gavin was free.. or simply not in at the moment? There was only a brief moment where she felt as if she were standing in limbo, waiting, and then the door cracked open. The look on his face was enough to tell her she'd timed this perfectly. "Make that your second," she mused, "I come bearing gifts," she added indicating to the foodstuff she had so diligently lugged around with her - which was a chore considering the distance between them. And to think only months ago she thought the flight of stairs between their levels was an inconvenience.
Once inside, Emily proceeded to his desk, placing down the carry bag but not unpacking the ham and cheese croissants and nor did she distribute their coffees. "I love what you've done to the place," she added, idly inspecting the space, running a finger over some of the surfaces before stopping to assess the structure of the nearest wall. It looked as if the lightest breeze would set it crashing down on their heads, but of course, she was confident it was properly reinforced. Was it not? To test the theory, Emily took a fist to the wall, tapping on it thrice with force.

Oh? Second?
There was no need to ask for an explanation as the bag of food was shown. Appearing with food and just when his clock was giving him the go ahead to drop the dull paperwork he hadn't actually gotten around to starting because of Avery problems then Ashby's whining. Now he remembered why he was going to work through lunch, the smile was still there though. How could he dislodge it when Emily was trying her hand at the this schedule boring thing? "This your way of inserting yourself into my schedule Miss Browne?"
He stepped aside enough for her to get a proper look at the room and make her way to his desk. One of his least trusted pieces of furniture in the entire room. It hadn't collapsed on him yet but he figured it was waiting for the right moment to mess with his day. "Glad it has your approval." The edge of sarcasm wasn't easily missed even with his preoccupation with her inspecting the place--
Waaaaait. WHAT was she doing??? DJSFKEGFEUISFIE!! No no no no. Gavin cringed with each assault the wall received, fully expecting it to cave in and kill them both. What a way to die too, eh? But they didn't. The hollow sounding wall vibrated some under the force of her tapping but it was still there and Gavin was by her side in a second trying to usher her away from it. "How's about we leave the wall alone? I like that idea." Because no, it was NOT reinforced as of yet, he was still working on getting an appointment with the apparently elusive Mr. Cresswell.

Oh good, so he could see what it was that she was doing exactly, excellent, it would make this so much easier for her then. Giving him a taste of his own medicine - which went down a treat, really. It was his lucky day. "Ms..." she corrected out of habit, though she was getting better at leaving the annoyance out of her tone. It wasn't necessary with Gavin, he was perhaps the only one who could get away with it, if she wasn't being so difficult about it. "And if it is?" she implored, not an ounce of remorse in her tone for taking up his time. She was entitled, and they both needed to eat at some stage in the day.
Of course, it went without saying that the place was a mess, she was actually surprised the Minister's Office managed to operate out of here at all. The lobby had been eye-opening an experience enough, though she wasn't at all off-put by the debris and bugs, it was more the structure of the place that concerned her. So many hazards. "Mmmm," she murmured in reply. Her approval was yet to be given, she was merely amused that he had managed to sit still in this place long enough to get any work done at all.
Her gaze trailed the length of the wall, top to bottom, eyes on the cornices and the ceiling too. It survived her battering, but she had been holding back - naturally. The fact that Gavin was removing her from the rooms perimeter said a lot about it's condition. "You should get that checked out," she stated the obvious. "But sure, whatever pleases you," she complied - letting him guide her away, dusting off her knuckles on her pants leg in the process and flashing him an innocent grin. So, was he going to offer her a seat? Or was she not allowed to touch those either?

The eyerolling was definitely happening, but it was more along the playfully lines than anything else. Emily's correction was to be expected and he couldn't honestly stand there telling himself he expected differently. Besides, there was no need to dwell on her correction when they were getting to the meat of the matter. She was here to bore a hole through his oh so busy schedule so they could have lunch. His lips twitched into a smirk. "If it is, I'll have to apologize for you wasting the trek over here because I'm dreadfully busy and can't stop to eat for even a moment."
Such a non-commital response. There wasn't much to be grasped or assessed from her monosyllabic answer and her continued eyeing of everything in the room. He didn't know what she was looking for. There wasn't to see and it was far from impressive in anyway but she was free to do what she wanted...away from the walls.
So he was leading her away from it...for their safety and she could thank him as soon as she realized this herself. Gavin managed to get her back to the centre of the room. "I should and will or I'll have my PA get that done for me. She'll appreciate time away from the office as much as any number of my other employees would." His hands casually slipped into his pocket and he mirrored her innocent grin with an innocently oblivious look of his own afterall he had just told her he was too busy for lunch and was still waiting for her to proper bore a hole. Right now she was just poking.

Over the course of the past year, Emily had become rather adept at ignoring eyerolls, especially his. They happened too frequently for her to be fazed by them now, especially when they were so lighthearted in nature. Gavin's smirk served as a precursor to what was about to come, and she wasn't going to have a bar of it. Yeah, right, dreadfully busy her hippogriff dung. "No need to apologise, I came to scout your location anyway, it's merely of convenience that you happen to fit into my oh so busy schedule." See. She was playing the role of the accommodating girlfriend, and he'd be wise to make the most of it while it lasted - or she could slip back into old habits, too easily. "Besides, I'm guessing you've not eaten since breakfast, so you need sustenance, or else your blood glucose will drop and you'll be far less effective in getting through your dreadfully busy schedule." The one where he didn't have half an hour to spare for her. Hmph.
From her initial observations it didn't surprise her that his employees were eager to get out of the place, but it made her wonder how her staff would feel about their confines if they'd been exposed to this mess. Cry babies some of them were. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Underground in comparison to this shamble. In fact, their bugs were even more preferable to the ones she found littered through this building, and they didn't have debris or unstable walls to contend with either. Just the mellow hum of a distant train and the odd rat for company. His standing around looking innocent in that smug way that he did, wasn't doing much to convince her that boring holes in his schedule was even worth her time. But she was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"Well if you're too busy to enjoy my company and my food... then I should let you get back to work," she decided, resigned to this fact. Emily took a coffee from the desk and grabbed the bag of pastries, only instead of moving to the door she helped herself to the seat she assumed was designated for visitors. He didn't say she couldn't stay to watch.

Gavin enjoyed boring holes, it'd become one of his favourite pass time since running into Emily and as much as he liked doing it, he figured it could have been as interesting to watch. Right now it was proving true. Emily was either saying this was completely spur of the moment because she was already headed here or that she'd made the effort from the very beginning. Either way he was listening. "You're good." He said, feigning contemplation as she went on about food and glucose levels. "I haven't eaten since breakfast." Breakfast she'd paid for mind you, giving him food twice in one day, no complaints but he wasn't convinced just yet. "Glad to see you taking breaks so seriously." Cutting into her own busy schedule and all.
Would they be standing there simply staring at each other for the rest of the day? He was sure this classified as one of those distractions they'd been talking about. Hardly any work would get done if this continued...not that he was thinking much about work right now. He was on break....and being rather difficult about it too.
Gavin's face fell a little once she'd reached her conclusion on the matter. That was it? Consider him disappointed. They would need to work on that eventually. It was hardly anyway to go about inserting yourself into someone else's busy day. He leaned against his desk again, taking the other cup of coffee, knowing fully well she'd have drank them both just to teach him he shouldn't be so difficult when she made efforts. "You're concern for my schedule's inspiring but I must say it's counter-productive to hole boring." He pointed out before taking a sip to hide his amused smirk. "Have my hole boring occasions taught you nothing about having a certain disregard for the time of others?"

It hadn't come as a huge surprise that he was being difficult, it was probably what he called pay back for the times she'd given him grief, not that there were many of those, but nevertheless here they were, having one of those conversations. She didn't care if she was good or not, the fact of the matter was, she was here and he would indulge her... just as she had done all those times before. Of course it was a given he hadn't eaten, purely because she hadn't eaten yet also, and she was hungry. So he could hardly continue to stand around and be difficult. "Mmm, it's a nasty habit that's rubbed off on me from an egotistical Department Head I know." Cue brow raise. Whoever could she mean?
Regardless, she was all for making herself comfortable, pulling her seat a little closer to his desk - and closer to him. She sipped from her coffee before placing it on the corner of the desk nearest her and dove into the bag to start pulling out her meal.
Emily shrugged at his assessment, such a poor pupil she was. "Mmm... yes, and no." He was in fact welcome to continue working, she was here for the view and should she have questions to pester him with then he wouldn't be able to avoid answering them, thus conversation would flow and she would win. "The way I see it, you're the one losing out with that arrangement... because I still get what I want. But since I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, you're welcome to join me, it'd be more worth your while." Extracting one of the croissants wrapped in white paper, Emily held it out to him, her gaze still in the depths of the bag, anticipating the next extraction.

A nasty habit and from an egotistical Department Head at that. "You're getting better at these compliments." His expression was especially pleasant and the raising of her eyebrow did very little to change that. "I am a bit concerned that you would make someone of such poor character rub off on you though. Who knows what other nasty habits you might have picked up." Could she see the concern on his face? He was trying really hard to make it look legit...though most likely failing.
Her pulling her chair closer told him she wasn't at all put off by what they'd now both established as a joke. She was still sitting there and not giving him any hard looks, rather she was getting more comfortable and reaching into her bag for whatever she'd brought. There was a hint of curiosity as he watched but in the end it didn't matter to him. He wasn't picky or particular about food and was usually fine with whatever she got him. "I could have conjured you a better chair you know. I can't imagine that's very comfortable." See? He could be accomodating.
Her line of conversation was moving closer to a persuasive demand in his head. Now it could almost be classified as proper hole boring and he would concede. "Touché." He said, leaning across to take the whatever was wrapped in the white wrapper. Her point was most valid, he knew she wouldn't be leaving and what's more he knew he'd have preferred having lunch with her as opposed to whatever it was his PA had dumped on his desk before he left earlier. "So what's the verdict? Are we in danger of some ax-murderer running in on us at any minute?" She did say she'd done some surveillance, right? Might as well pass on the info while she was here.
