Default Malkin's Back Room

Past the curtained doorway directly behind the counter stands another world. At least, it could seem that way to the casual observer that is used to the tidiness and brightness of the rest of Madame Malkin's. It's not to say the large room isn't bright, as the pale yellow walls that Aliceara redid once she bought the shop do give it a bit of cheerfulness. But the magical sewing machines spread around the room, interspersed with cutting tables and racks of robes and other clothing give it a bit of a sense of artful chaos. And in one corner is tucked a small desk that Aliceara uses for any paperwork she needs to deal with: orders, personal messages, and the like. Hidden halfway underneath the desk is a cushioned bed for her kneazle kitten, Alexander, as well.

It seemed that between the rather overexcited shop assistant and the woman that was her boss, Roxie could barely get a word in edgewise which really hadn’t been anything that she wasn’t used to already; most times her comments had gone unheard because of the fact that people had either chosen to intentionally not pay attention or talked over here, of course neither option was appreciated all that much because it had managed to drive her crazy. Hopefully that wouldn’t have happened since it would have made this internship seem all the much longer, but either way it hadn’t mattered because somehow she would have gotten her point across. Questions about what else she was here to do had filled her mind because the letter hadn’t exactly been specific, maybe that was intentional to make sure that she actually had spent the time traveling to London but really she hadn’t entirely liked to handle questions without answers when things like that had only started to make her impatient which wasn’t a good thing by any means. Impatience only caused problems which she wasn’t actually willing to deal with and it wouldn’t have really been unprofessional in a moment such as this. You don’t want to be impatient either, it’s better to keep everything else inside until later on because you’re supposed to be a helpful intern and not someone causing problems.

Noticing the woman briefly glancing at her, she merely frowned in both curiosity and questioning; what was wrong here? How is it that she was being the only one given that look that basically was almost like being reprimanded for something that she hadn’t done? It really hadn’t made any sense by any means but she wasn’t really about to ask any questions now when that only would have potentially meant creating a scene and even if she was a master at that by now, she wasn’t looking to actually make herself look bad. Not that she exactly cared what people thought about her by now because it was all ridiculous anyway. Once the boss lady started to speak, she only paid quiet attention before shaking her head in response to having any questions, anything that had been wandering her mind really could have waited to be asked until later on. Hopefully this had meant that they’d finally get some helpful information instead of standing around having idle conversation.

Marci was gleefully standing by Madame Aliceara, just like a soldier usually does, at the ready and nodding her head vigorously at everything that was said. OH QUESTIONS? Hmm? Anyone? No one? PFFT. Okay, she was going to do the questions for them. "Madame? Can I take them on a tour? Can I? I can show them the tricks Tappy makes!" Of course, she'd named the measuring tape on her second day. She could dance with it too when there was no customers. "Are they going to use the sewing machines?" NO. Just NO. She wasn't allowed to handle a sewing machine on her own, an intern should NOT be allowed to do so either! Marci was a tantrum-throwing expert, and madame Aliceara probably knew that by now. Just NO.

OH. EM. EM. (oh my merlin). An idea just hit her! And it showed on her face as her jaw dropped open and she clapped her hands excitedly, bouncing a little on her feet, "Do we get to make uniforms?! I have ideas! I can draw them for you!" YES YES YES. Please? She was giving the puppy eyes already.

Right. Her scones! Marci quickly opened the box and shoved it with good intention and high spirit toward the first intern and then the second before she offered one to the Madame and then another one for herself. AGAIN Alexander was being ignored. His cute little meows were not going to get him a scone. Not after he rubbed his fur all over her NEW sandals. NOPE.

No questions. That could be promising or disconcerting, but at the very least, the two new interns looked like they were ready to work. It was highly possible they wanted to skip the questions and just get to that, and Aliceara had no reason to deny them. Although it looked as if the mention of the scones had made Evangeline a bit nervous, which was amusing. Apparently she was a quick study, even though she had also apparently forgotten that Marci had mentioned she hadn’t made these in the middle of her earlier ramble. Either that or she’d just tuned most of it out. She herself had just learned to glean the important details out of her assistant’s hyperactivity. They’d likely learn that by the end of the summer as well, although she wouldn’t have blamed them if they never chose to return. The girl was a bit difficult to handle often enough, and it wasn’t easier when the rambling had begun yet again. Soon enough they’d be allowed on their own, essentially, so the bubbliness might be muted by the robes and everything else in the shop.

“Yes you can, and no, they likely won’t,” she replied to the rush of questions. “Tappy is Marci’s name for the magical measuring tape we use for adjustments and custom orders,” she continued, turning back to Evangeline and Roxie. Odds were they’d need explanation for the other young woman’s little quirks, at least at first. Before any tours or anything else, the explanation of their duties should happen, and she pushed Marci’s other questions aside for the moment. “Essentially, your duties while you’re here will be to watch the floor. You can suggest clothing, help locate it, and answer any other question the customers may have. Along with occasionally helping right things if they get tossed around.” Excited students didn’t always show respect for the racks and the merchandise, not to mention the occasional clumsy situation. “Also, you’re welcome to sit in when we get custom orders, help us note down the details of what is desired by the customer.” While that left her and Marci to run the counter, when there were the busy moments.

“I think we’re well stocked on Hogwarts uniforms for this summer, Marci, but I’m always willing to look at your ideas for future merchandise. If the two of you have any, feel free to suggest them as well,” she added, including the two girls. “I’m always looking for new ideas regarding the dress robes, after all. Uniforms tend to be rather set as to the style they need to be in.” Aside from the possibility of subtle alterations once customers had purchased them, as regarded thread colors and other unobtrusive details. All she had left was to hope that the hyper suggestions would pause for the moment, as the scones had made their appearance and been passed around, leaning over to search her desk for a kneazle treat that got tossed to Alexander to appease him for the time being. She knew the ignore tactic wasn’t going to actually keep him from continuing to follow Marci around, but at the very least, he’d have something while they ate their scones.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Even as the Marci girl was talking Evangeline found herself slowly shaking her head hoping the girl would be shot done. Don't make her give them the tour, she'd probably say everything too quickly and go around giving wild gestures at everything. The aim was to know where everything was, NOT to be so hopelessly confused by the end that she herself would need some assistance.

Finally she was made to stop talking because the older woman was back to her explaining and giving of information.

...

This...this sounded like slave work, plain and simple. Picking up after little children who can't keep their hands to themselves or pick up after themselves. Tending to the ones who wanted everything done for them. The only parts that didn't sound bad were working the counter and possibly coming up with ideas that might go toward the designs.

Evangeline Harper was NO ONE'S house elf.

At the appropriate time she took a scone, two even, but she was waiting for someone else to take the first bite. She'd missed the memo earlier that miss chatty hadn't baked these. Consequently, she wouldn't trust a single crumb. Would the other intern be the first to go? She couldn't stand here holding the scone all day.

So far all it seemed like was this meeting had been all about rules and whenever someone spoke there wasn’t exactly much attention paid to the words themselves, the idea behind what was said at the time had been understood without question. Roxie just had never enjoyed the idea of people telling her what to do, between her parents which weren’t about to be discussed anytime soon for reasons that didn’t need to be mentioned, to her teachers back at Durmstrang whom always had had the highest of expectations for the girl; it was almost like there wasn’t much of a chance to prove that she wasn’t exactly what everyone said she was. Perhaps the time for that was later considering now she had to be professional for the sake of being an intern which wasn’t entirely fun the longer she ended up thinking about it but backing out was not an option because she never gave up, there was always that little spark of determination to make her keep going whether or not it was exactly a good idea. Besides, she hadn’t really been doing anything else for the summer except hanging out with Crash and Gizmo along with the other pets back home so it was better off having this to occupy her time and if it meant meeting new people, then she wasn’t about to just turn around and say no.

Eyeing the scone in her hand, she wasn’t sure whether or not to trust it considering the assistant made them and Merlin only knew if there was something in them that shouldn’t have been there; somehow though she almost was willing to forget about the questions about it and took a bite out of it without thinking twice. Maybe she was crazy to do that but she wasn’t going to be impolite. It didn’t taste bad at all, in fact; she only wanted to finish off the scone though decided for certain reasons to just eat it in pieces while the boss lady had been discussing exactly what they were about to do over the summer. None of it sounded that terrible actually; maybe she could have come up with an idea for dress robes to suggest seeing as they definitely were not the most stylish things in the world but perhaps this could have been the opportunity that she’d been waiting for seeing as she wasn’t entirely naive in fashion. Would definitely have been unexpected for her, that was for sure.

OH. Well GOOD that they won't use them either, hehehehe. Not that she was bitter or selfish but it would be unfair if they could and she couldn't. Not unless she nagged and nagged and Madame was standing RIGHT there with her. "It responds better to Tappy, too! It's just like a pet without the need to feed, clean or snuggle with it, y'know?" Another idea was forming in her head as she elaborated on the magical measuring tape with no invitation whatsoever.

And about the uniforms, MHHMMM, she got it and nodded her head at Madame Aliceara. "Okay! What about uniforms for the three of us?" BEAM. She had THREE assistants-ish people. Wouldn't be a blast if they made uniforms? OH OHH. "Or we can wear matching colors! Can we not do brown, though? It's just too earthly and spirit-dampening." She screwed up her face to prove it, and took a big bite off her scone. Alexander was still roaming closely around her but thankfully her boss was smart enough to pick up on Marci's failure attempt of ignoring the Kneazle, and tossed him a treat for him. The young assistant eyed him with the corner of her eye, her guilt of now sharing food with him starting to surface juuuuust a little.

The situation seemed to be getting more ridiculous as the moments passed, yet so far Aliceara wasn’t letting that affect her disposition. Marci’s excitability rarely ruffled her anyhow, but it seemed even more important that she show a good example when they had two young women looking to them as, hopefully, role models. Examples, at the very least. They’d signed up for this internship, after all. Her explanations had seemed to get taken in, anyway, although Evangeline hadn’t seemed quite happy with the revelation of what she’d be doing working here. Perhaps the girl hadn’t thought that running a shop would entail so much work, not to mention the occasional selfishness of the customers. “I apologize if you expected anything different. It really is amusing working here, if you can manage to get past the more negative aspects,” she said, glancing down as Alexander had taken hold of the treat she’d tossed him and gobbled it down. It had gone over better than the scones as of yet.

Until Roxie had taken a bite, and not choked. That, if anything, should have proven that the baked goods weren’t made by her lovely assistant, who had gone back to chattering about Tappy and several other random topics. “I’m sure it is,” she murmured, wondering if the young woman in fact owned any pets. The relationship with her kneazle was well documented by now, so perhaps she simply got along with non-living things, aside from an oven. The failed baking was rather well documented by now as well. Marci was still the only one speaking, though, and that only made the next comments that much more amusing, receiving an arched eyebrow. Opinion noted, considering her current attire. She obviously had never forced her assistant to dress in certain colors. “Perhaps you could take that up with Evangeline and Roxie. See if they want to have uniforms?,” she suggested, breaking off a piece of her own scone and popping it into her mouth. She much preferred individuality, personally. She’d had enough of uniforms when she’d been in school, and something was telling her the two teens would agree.

Evangeline took note of the other girl, Roxie, eating the scone. Her gaze settled on her, waiting for her to swallow, until she did, nothing else would get her attention. Finally, it seemed the girl had gotten it down without gagging, choking or making a face. That could have meant they were okay. She'd continue to wait while she listened but WHY was the girl allowed to go on talking.

Evangeline could count on one hand the things she said that were actually of some value and she'd been talking A LOT. It could almost classify as unnecessary noise.

She sighed, not willing to believe she was being spoken to about an inanimate object as if it were really a live pet. Her gaze settled next on the boss lady, hoping she'd shut her up, which she almost did...in a way...by starting her own little speech again. The first thing she said had the young girl's cheeks reddening. She hadn't meant to make her reaction so apparent. This was where she was interning, she'd pick it out of every other shop and was happy she was accepted but...the job description could have been mentioned earlier. Still, she was here now and should have been a bit more grateful. Evangeline silently scolded herself for that misaction.

At the mention of uniforms she gave a brisk shake of her head. "No thanks." They wanted her walking around looking like Miss. Chats Alot? NO.THANKS. "I rather like my clothes and so long as it's not a rule I'd like to keep wearing them." She also noted even Boss Lady was eating the scone. Alright. After taking a shallow breath she bit into her own.

Remarkable, though nothing in her expression gave that away. Nope. She remained composed. "How soon can we jump in and get this all started." Why yes. she was an eager one. Couldn't you tell?

After wondering why she hadn’t eaten the scone before, Roxie just finished it off without a second thought; trying to not start talking with her mouth full of food since that wasn’t polite nor was it needed since whatever she wanted to say could have waited five seconds, then again it was better to just listen to everything else being said between the boss lady, “the assistant” and the other intern. The impatience of standing around and not really getting to do anything but go over the expectations as well as the rules which were of course important even if she hadn’t entirely been paying attention. It was a challenge to stay actually interested in this internship when they weren’t actually getting to work with customers yet, hopefully that would have happened soon since they couldn’t have very well just stayed in the back room. Though she wouldn’t have minded dealing with anything but hearing about a tape measure being referred to something like a pet, she already had pets at home so wasn’t looking to handle a tape measure; unless it was absolutely necessary but apparently that idea was immediately canceled out. The list of thoughts slowly was reducing so it only meant that she could have focused even further on the current discussion.

Well that was until the mention of uniforms had been discussed which made her simply stare blankly, no way was she about to allow that to happen; the times that she had to wear a uniform were to Durmstrang but during the summer it would have been awesome to just get away with muggle clothing. “I agree with my fellow intern here, I would rather not have a uniform for here since I don’t see anything wrong with what we’re wearing now.” she replied, merely putting her two knuts into the conversation since she wasn’t going to let anything pass without getting to voice her opinion. Apparently the other girl was just as impatient to get started which was good, maybe that meant they could have gotten along even if just all they had in common was certain ideas about the assistant.
