Charles Hollingberry EraAll historical records pertaining to Ministry of Magic RPG under Minister for Magic, Charles Hollingberry [IC March 2097 - present; OOC November 2018 - present]
The largest open room on Level Four is the one housing the employee work area for both departments on this level. The first set of workstations you encounter belong to the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. In the center of the room there are three sets of workstations, pushed together for easier coordination and respectively seating the department's largest divisions: the Magical Creatures Office, the Magical Beings Office, and the Spirits Office. Both the Pest Control, and the Enforcement division's workstations, on the other hand, are set up a little more inconspicuously to the side of the room, considering that these divisions' employees are usually not found at their desks.
Once you have walked past the workstations assigned to the Creatures Department, you reach the area where you are likely to find employees working for the Department of Environmental Regulation and Protection. The workstations have been arranged according to the employees' respective divisions; the Enforcement and Regulation Divisions forming the largest squares, whereas both the Oceanoizardry and Botany Divisions' workstations have been moved near the office walls to ensure that the generally unused desks are not in everyone's way.

It wasn’t often that Sloane actually found himself within the confines of the Office, but considering the work they had been doing over the last few days had been completed and the dragons were now safely in the Reserve in Scotland … well, it was time to do the paperwork. As boring as it was. If he didn’t do it now while the details were fresh in his mind, they would become muddled with his next case - it just wasn’t worth risking it. Not when his report to Miss Li could prove that dragons were being mishandled and sold around the UK.
No. It was far too important to ignore.
Raising the flask of hot, black coffee to his lips, he took a swig as he moved into the office before he screwed on the lip once more and slipped it back into the deep inner pocket of his jacket. He gave a smile to a few familiar faces as he moved towards the back of the office - his desk was one of the furthest away, but really - that was okay. He quite liked the peace and quiet… especially when he needed to write up cases.

Rebecca was still very new to her job and thus still found all matters related to spirits fun and interesting to dig deep into. What she had come to not like as much was the related paperwork and the fact that places to house relocated spirits weren’t exactly growing on trees. It wasn’t hard to understand why few wizards wanted to share a home with a boggart or banshee but it made things harder for her to do her job. Rebecca needed to write a proposal to Miss Li for a spirit housing facility it’d a good way to go. More research was needed though before she could present anything.
With her mind on the sad banshee that she had relocated this morning Rebecca didn’t see the man sitting at his desk until she slammed her left foot into the right leg of his desk. Grimacing in sudden pain Becca’s eyes focused on the man mumbling. "Sorry, i wasn’t looking or thinking about where i was going." Perfect now her toes probably would grow to double size. Wasn’t it enough with a scraped scalp? "I'm Rebecca by the way. New in the spirits division..." she introduced herself thinking it'd make up for her abrupt appearance.

Sloane had had enough time to cross the office, slip into his seat and open the wallet of information that he had in front of him so that he could begin to read and fill in the blank spots that he had left yesterday when he had started to write this report. However before his eyes had finished the first sentence, there was a bang and a woman was right in front of him - face pulled into a pinch of pain -- obviously holding back a few choice words.
He stood up to greet her, one hand braced on the desk as he looked at her, ”That’s okay… No harm done.” He paused. ”Are you okay, Miss…?” If he had met her before, he couldn’t remember her name. He was horrible with faces, though he could tell you the distinctive markings of every dragon he had worked with over the past twenty plus years.
He hoped they hadn’t met, he hoped he didn’t offend her.
Rebecca. They hadn’t met - that was great to hear. At least he hadn’t forgotten. ”Hello.” He said with a small smile, pulling up at the slightest corner. ”It is nice to meet you, Rebecca.”RebeccaRebeccaRebecca.”How are you enjoying the department?” Conversation made you forget pain and distracted you… Right? He hoped so, because he really wasn’t the biggest fan of small talk. Yet here he was. Small talk-ing.
”Sloane.” He said, nodding his head at her. ”Sloane Eris. Dragons.” It was all about the dragons.

Becca could guess very well how she looked in the man across the desk's eyes. She was grimacing in pain and that had never been a good look for her as her grandmother kept reminding her on visits. Moving her foot around in her heeled boot Becca plastered on a weak smile. "Yes, I'm okay or I will be when my toes stop hurting and swelling. Desk legs are hard." And hitting into one was not to be advised when you didn't have steeled boots.
"I like the department's warm feel so far. Everyone is welcoming and helpful and that's a big plus when you are new and don't know anyone." Becca replied as she took a few steps back and to the side to not accidentally hit her foot again on Sloane's desk."It's nice to meet you too Sloane! Have you worked with dragons long?" Sloane's last name went into one ear and out the other. She was good with names but surnames she didn't put to memory unless if it was for boss people like Miss Li.
"Have you seen all those prophet articles about creatures in Diagon Alley?" Becca wondered. It was an easy way to continue the small talking onwards.

Sloane sympathised. Infact, he was impressed by the fact that the only thing the woman had done was make a face. If he his his toes on a chair or his elbow on a door, he had the mouth of a sailor - so much so that his Dad groaned. Whoops. He was used to being surrounded by those who worked with Dragons on a daily basis, they all lived on the same barracks and ate from the same mess. You ended up family before anything else, willing and ready to stand between them and an angry dragon if the need arose.
“I hope that they don’t swell too much - or if they do, that you have a good draught handy… I believe there are some to hand in the medical box??” It wouldn’t be the first time he had gone to that box for a scrape that wasn’t enough to go to a healer. “Though, I guess we can be thankful you were wearing shoes.” He cracked a small smile at the woman, trying to lighten the subject … even slightly.
He nodded. Though, he’d been here a few years already… he still didn’t know everyone. It didn’t help that he was out in the field as much as he could be. He didn’t want any dragons to get hurt and he would work every hour of the day to make sure they were all safe if he needed too. Though he’d rather not have the paperwork to do with that but he knew how important it was - both for the Reserve’s taking the dragons in, and for the Ministry paper trail.
“They won’t see you stuck if you are lost.” He nodded. “Not sure out department, but in general. If you can’t find anything, just ask anyone with an ID badge or the security officers that roam the halls. Anyone that you see will try to help or at the very least point you in the right direction of where you can get the answers you need.” He was rambling. Whoops.
He nodded instantly. “Since I was old enough,” He grinned cheekily at her. “I would have worked with them sooner if I could have. My aunt works on a Reserve in Wales, so I worked with them for two Summers until I graduated then I moved to Romania.” The rest was history.
His smile faded as he frowned. “I have… I’m still not entirely sure where they all descended from … or if we are managing to round them up and rehome them.” He shrugged a little. “I’m sure Miss Li and the correct divisions will have their plans -- so far I haven’t heard anything about dragons in London.” Well, outwith Gringotts at least. But that was another thing altogether and he had a thought or two about that.

To hear that Sloane was sympathetic with her injury felt good. Not everyone Rebecca had met in the department so far was eager to show compassion. Furrowing her brows she queried a little confused with a look at Sloane. "A draught? We have a medical box?" It was the first that she had heard about a medicinal box, was she supposed to know one existed? She had gotten a tour of the ministry and of the department but nobody had really taken the time to tell her the essentials like this.
Toeing off the boot on her injured foot with some difficulty Rebecca craned down to look at her indeed swollen and slightly red tinted toes. At least the weren’t broken so that was a silver lining. Straightening up to look at Sloane that had rambled out something that she had shamefully only half listened to Becca asked "So what your basically saying is that anyone who works in the ministry should be willing to assist me or point me in the right direction if i need help or have questions?" Well that was good to know but she took that with a grain of salt. Not everyone was helpful even if they were supposed to be.
The conversation moved over to dragons and Becca literally saw how Sloane started to glow as he talked about his history in short with dragons. "I can really hear on your voice that you love dragons. It’s admirable. Not everyone is privileged to work with what they love. I hope i’ll come to like working with spirits too." Love was far off.
Shrugging Becca said "I don’t know where the creatures descended from either, but the owl post shopkeeper in DA seemed to think they came from Hogwarts. I don’t know if that’s correct though." Rumours and DP articles weren’t always accurate. "I’m sure Miss Li has the right divisions working on it, but it pained me to read about uniorns trying to eat icecream in Floreans then something is terribly wrong."

It had been a long few weeks. Adam was exhausted and he probably looked it. The fact that his big bug-eyed glasses made his eyes look bigger didn’t help matters either. He still wasn’t happy about where the damn things, but at least he’d been able to stop using his support cane. Well, mostly been able to stop using it. He still kept is tucked away in one of the inner pockets of his jacket, just in case. He was, after all, a pretty unlucky guy and he didn’t need to have a Velma moment on top of everything else that usually happened to him.
In fact, it was due to his usual string of luck that it had taken him another two weeks to make his way up to the greenhouses because as soon as he had entered the Ever Locked Room and had a potion exploded. He’d had to spend the day cleaning up the mess and it hadn’t even been his own concoction! Never-the-less, his black hair was once again sporting odd yellow-orange dots from where some of the potion had landed on his head. He also might have smelled faintly of slightly burnt chocolate.
Summary – his potion ingredient gathering and apology to Mariana were largely overdo. At least, that’s what Adam was thinking as he walked into the Level 4 area. Part of him hoped he didn’t run into Mariana as he feared doing so would make him relive the embarrassment of Zita and pompous fluff head from the gala. ”Hello?” he called out. Things would be so much easier, if he could just bypass this finding an employee nonsense and go straight into the greenhouses and find a worker there. But Rules were rules...
Even so, maybe he could get Airey to talk to the department head about giving him better access. It wasn’t like Adam didn’t know his way around plants.
Sorry it took so long, RL and weddings happened <3

He blinked. Then his brow’s furrowed at her confusion. Sloane was sure that he had seen a medical box around here somewhere. Hadn’t he? Though, he hadn’t needed to a Healer once since he had left the Sanctuary… so maybe he had made that up and really he was thinking about something back in Romania… Except… :He was sure it was something he had seen here, at the Ministry. ”... I believe so.” Though, he didn’t sound as confident as he had only moments before. He’d need to confirm that with someone else. Preferably someone who had worked here (and paid more attention) than he had.
Though… it was only a stubbed toe, so he didn’t know if anything could be done for that… It wasn’t like a burn or a cut that could be covered and protected. Hmm. He had no idea. He wasn’t a healer. He laughed. “Whether they have the time, or even at their desks, is another question… but you’ll soon get the lay of it.” He paused. ”It’s just like being a first year all over again and thinking you’d never remember where all of your classes were being held.” He gave her a smile, hip resting on the side of his desk.
”Never wanted to do anything else.” The man replied with a slight shrug of his shoulder. ”I worked hard to make sure I got the grades I needed so that I could… and I haven’t looked back since.” He didn’t think it was all that impressive though, he had a big family; and as such he had so many people who had ended up in important and impressive careers. He, on the other hand, was more happy than ever with his dragons.
”I hope you do too, its important work.” He nodded as he hoped that was something good to say. No-one else could influence your own enjoyment of your work, and no-one else could make you feel satisfied when you went home at night. That was all down to her… he hoped she stuck it out though at least until she decided if she liked it or not.
”I don’t think I saw anything about Unicorns… I heard that there were Bowtruckles in the park though?” Hmm… Whatever was in that mist at Hogwarts had certainly played havoc with the entire eco-system… Sloane hoped that even if they got rid of it, that they would be able to get the creatures back

Mariana had been going back and forth to the greenhouses all morning, taking notes and returning when they were complete to pass them off. Truth be told, she was having a wonderfully productive day and it had her feeling all kinds of cheerful. It was why she'd volunteered to go see what the man calling out wanted when she heard his voice, deciding she had the time to spare a few minutes to help someone. If you were feeling good, it was nice to pay that forward, yeah? Well, here she went to do just that.
"Hi, how can I he--" Oh. She knew this guy. Adam, right? The glasses were the give away, though she was glad to see he seemed to be fairing better with them than he had been when they'd met. "Hey, nice to see you again. Are you looking for someone?"

The paper in Adam’s hand crinkled as he stood there, trying not to fidget. Standing around waiting always made him impatient and nervous. It was odd because he had no problems sitting around a cauldron waiting on the next step in a potion. Perhaps he was just uncomfortable waiting for help. In fact, ever since the Gala, Adam had found himself to be very impatient and uncomfortable in general. He blamed Zita, which probably attested for his avoidance of her lately. He should have known better than to let himself get attached to someone. It never failed that as soon as he did, there were problems. The problems were never the same twice, but there were problems none-the-less.
In his fidgeting, he had turned a slow circle and was facing the exit of the room as someone walked up to him. He turned on his heel as he heard a greeting. Even though he had come up here hoping to run into Mariana, he was honestly surprised she was the one who had come out to help him. He stood there for a moment blinking big blue eyes behind his big ugly glasses as he tried to gather himself together because seeing her brought memories of the gala and its aftermath rushing back. And with it came all his confused emotions.
”Hallo,” he cleared his throat. ”Mariana, ja?” he asked, despite knowing 100% that it was the name of the woman he’d asked a simple question of at the gala. A question that had led her into a very awkward and uncomfortable situation. Adam suddenly felt like a huge cretin. He tried to put on his usual lopsided grin. ”I am in need uff a botanist.” He raised the hand holding his list, hoping his face wasn’t showing how much he wanted to run out of the room. ”Vhich if I remember rightly vou are.” A nervous laugh escaped him, a slight flush coming to the tips of Adam’s ears. He knew that by coming up here he was likely to see her, had hoped to see her in order to apologize for his party’s behavior at the gala, and yet, hadn’t really expected to run into Mariana. It was all so…damn…confusing. Not to mention, nerve-wracking. He didn’t really understand why. After all he hadn’t been the one acting inappropriately, giving Mariana death glares, or calling her an Italian tomato sauce.
He pushed the stupid glasses on his face further up his nose and held the list close this face to double check it before handing it over. As far as he could tell his translation pen had worked successfully and had dictated the needed plants in English. ”Potion supplies on Lefel Neun are low.” He lowered the paper and finally and he held out the paper in Mariana’s general direction, because while the glasses helped him get around without a cane, he still couldn’t see much.

"I am, yes. Looks like you came to the right place," She confirmed, offering him a smile and accepting the list, curious to see what was on it. She knew that departments received a regular supply of commonly used ingredients, but if this was a special order, she'd need to take a few additional steps.
"I'll just have to have you fill out an official request so I can run it by the boss. Follow me." The brunette motioned with her head and then made her way through the shared work space expertly, all the while looking over Adam's list. "Can I ask what it is you're working on?" She enjoyed potions, always had. She liked knowing the ways in which the ingredients worked for certain potions and not others. This, of course, focused a lot around plants, which were her real passion.

After the note left his hand, he ran his fingers through his hair. It was a nervous gesture he made when he wasn't sure exactly how he was feeling. He was still trying to figure out his emotions when Mariana spoke again. What had she said? Oh...they were moving... He shuffled along behind her, if a bit slow since he wasn't familiar with the layout of the office.
"Vell, zis iss for schtores," he answered honestly. It seemed like he was the only potioneer who ever did inventory. " I did infentory undt ve vere low or out uff all uff zose." Oh maybe she meant personally? Had he mentioned at the gala that he worked on potions? How much could he tell her. "Oh ah...but on a fariations uff Amortentia. At home, I haf been trying to find a vay to make ze Volfsbane potion more accessible to more people."
"Shouldn't be a problem to get these for you, then," She said with a smile as she leafed through a drawer to find the particular folder she was looking for. The request forms were in here somewhere, she was sure of it...
AH-HA!
Pulling out the form-which was a rather lovely shade of green, by the way-the brunette set it down on an empty desk and searched her person for a pen, which just so happened to be tucked right behind her ear. "You seem quite dedicated to your work. I've always found amortentia fascinating, more so for the unique aroma it produces for everyone. I can't say I'd ever want to be on the wrong end of an amortentia phial, though." Her brow furrowed, the botanist suddenly worried that she'd misplaced her pen somewhere in the greenhouses as she ran a hand through her hair and felt it tucked right where she'd left it. She smiled sheepishly, shaking her head after freeing it and setting it down on the form. "There you go. You just list the plants you need there, explain the purpose, and sign the bottom."

”It kan be an interesting potion to study,” he said choosing his words carefully. The contract he had signed didn’t allow him to say much and when he did start to say something he shouldn’t, it tied up his tongue for about a half hour. So he tried very hard not to share too much. About his work at the Ministry at least. His personal work? Well he could talk a person’s ear off, if they let him. ”I find volfsbane to be efen more interesting," he said trying to change the topic so that he didn’t have to worry about what he was saying. ”I am trying to lessen ze amount zat a person needs to take.” So far, he hadn’t been successful though. It was quite frustrating, but wasn’t enough to make him stop his research. ”I zink zat it is just a matter uff ingredient ratio to brewing to star chart connection or it kould just be as simple as adding anozzer ingtredient.” He trailed off believing he was rambling. Nobody ever really liked to hear his theories on potions.
The two of them were standing there for a few minutes and then Mariana was handing him a paper and a pen. Oh…he was going to have to re-write everything? That might be a problem. ”Ah…” he said looking at the pen owlishly. ”Ist it a problem if I use a translation quill?” he asked, blushing. If he was alone, he could have taken his time to write it out, but with his eyesight and his ESL issues, he didn’t want to keep Mariana waiting too long. He reached into his jacket. His translation quill was tucked in by his folded up support cane that, yes, he still carried around.

The rambling didn't bother Mariana so much, who was known to ramble about plants from time to time, particularly when she was excited about something she'd discovered. She got it. Being passionate about ones work was a definite plus as far as she was concerned. "Well, keep at it. It sounds like you could be on to something." She gave him an encouraging smile.
"As long as the form gets completed, use whatever quill you'd like." It certainly didn't matter to her as long as the information was correct. "I'll just let you do that, then." She stepped back, giving the man some room to work. In the meantime, she fished the packet of chewing gum from her pocket and grabbed herself a piece to chew on.

”I hope so,” he said. ” I zink it is really important to try undt make zings more accessible to zose vho need it..” His mind briefly wondered off to the work his father did in the local wizarding hospital in Berlin. ” Undt zere iss a great need fur Volfsbane potions to be more accessible. Or at least taught more.” Because it wasn’t taught at all. At least not in his school. Adam had studied and learned to brew the potion himself only a few years ago when his father had asked him try it. It had taken him a few times to make it properly, which had frustrated him. Adam was usually so good at making proper potions in one go. "Do you had any person projects you are working on?" he asked realizing he had been caught up in his own ramblings.
Oh thank Merlin, Adam thought pulling the pen out of his pocket. He was quite sure that few people understood how stressful it was to be put on the spoke to write something when you couldn’t see and English wasn’t your first language. He sucked briefly on the tip of the quill then set it down on the paper. He then bent over and spoke quietly to it in German. The small purple pen scratched dutifully along the paper, scraping noises blending with Adam’s German. In a fourth of the time it would have taken Adam to write it himself, the paperwork was done, he took the pen in hand and scribbled his signature (big with lots of loops but legible) at the bottom. ”Mariana?” He looked around as he tucked the quill away wondering if she had walked off and left him. ”I am done.” He held out the paper, hoping he hadn’t missed anything on the form.

"It sounds like you're doing important work. I'm sure your efforts will be appreciated, particularly the accessibility part." She offered him an approving nod, considering his next question. "I like making plant based balms and lotions. It's more of a hobby than anything else. They make excellent gifts." And her family liked them well enough.
Taking the paper from Adam, the brunette gave it a once over and smiled. "Okay, you're all set. I'll submit this and you should have your supplies soon." That was the hope, anyway. "Is there anything else I can help you with?"

"Vill you bringkt down ze supplies vhen zey are ready or?" he asked unsure of the process from this point forward. He had always given the list to his department head and they had taken care of it before. But Airey had been busy so he had thought he would come up and take care of it for him.
Well, that and so he could apologize to Mariana. And with the way that things were shaping up, he was running out of time for his second goal. The problem was, he was still really embarrassed by the whole thing, which made it hard to talk about. "Mairana," he started and then stopped. He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked away from Mairan's direction. " Vhile you are here, I vanted to apologize for...eferyzzing at ze gala." His ears flushed red. "You vere just trying to help undt vell, zingkt vent sideways."
