| | Surviving Suburbia Everybody loves Hogwarts.
Students couldn’t be prouder of the beloved castle they get to call home for most part of the year, and those unfortunate enough not to receive an invitation, dream of racing the moving staircases and finding secret passageways behind talking portraits.
Enchanting as it may be, Hogwarts remains, above all: a school. Which means that Hogwarts students don’t necessarily spend all their time at the castle joking with nearly-headless ghosts, sneaking into forbidden forests, or enjoying a cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace. Like any other student at any other school, magical or otherwise, they have their fair share of responsibilities: homework to get done, tests to study for, grades to improve. Overall, Hogwarts students tend to be hard-working, smart individuals who surpass challenges set by each and every lesson, moving on to higher levels.
There are, however, those classes that are just IMPOSSIBLE for some to pass. And for some Hogwarts students the main culprit tends to be: Muggle. Studies.
These students can perform a perfect patronus, handle a crying mandrake, predict your untimely demise in a teacup, but they simply can NOT figure out the workings of a “TV remote” no matter how many times they press all the bloody buttons. It looks just like a tel-uh-phony, what is even the point of this thing!? GAHHH.
For these students, a special summer lesson has been put together by Professor Willoughby, Hogwarts’ one and only Muggle Studies master. These students failed all exams and either didn’t turn in their homework, or turned in something that made no more sense than a two-headed dog with chicken legs and fire breath. If these students don’t want to end up repeating the class next term (and I’m more than certain they don’t), they MUST pass the summer lesson, which, in consequence, will take up a good half of their summer break.
So, what is Professor Willoughby’s challenge?
Surviving one month in suburbia.
The worst Muggle Studies students in every House and every year must pack their belongings (without the help of magic) and move to a standard, uniformed suburban home in the middle of a friendly muggle neighbourhood in the outskirts of London. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Well, there’s a catch: the students must give up their wands to Professor Willoughby at the end of term, and they may only retrieve them after successfully completing all challenges set up by the professor. So, absolutely no magic can be performed during the entire month the students spend in this home, performing their daily tasks without the aid of their wands. They must learn to live life… the muggle way.
It’s not all so bad, though. The house is large and comfortable, there’s a pool in the backyard, they get a mini van to drive around, and there’s other youths in the neighbourhood. Just next door is a house occupied entirely by muggle university students, who our muggle-challenged witches and wizards must interact with without raising any suspicion to complete some of their tasks. If they’re nice enough, they could maybe even get the muggles to perform some of these tasks for them. …Long as they’re not caught by the Professor’s pet assistant. There will be one student, the best student, in fact, who is already familiar with all things muggle and will be in charge of making sure that all tasks are completed by his classmates. Should anyone be caught cheating, this student will be in charge of reporting them to Professor Willoughby, and they may permanently lose their wand in consequence.
To help the students stay on track and remember all the tasks they must complete, a chalkboard has been set up in the living room area of the home. Here, the professor’s assistant has listed all the tasks the students must complete, in the order they must be performed. Also, all students have been equipped with the muggle version of a wand - a cellphone. Each cellphone is activated with its own phone number and the students are free to use them as they please, the more they play around with the gadget and experience first-hand muggle technology, the better! But please do try to take it easy on the selfies.
And so, girls and boys… welcome to suburbia! Have fun and try not to get electrocuted by that tricky muggle invention - electricity!

Hello everyone!
So, since the general RP section of the site is pretty dead, The Amazing Ru (pinecone) and I have decided to start something new that will hopefully get more members involved in RPs outside of the school!
If you’re interested in joining, please just post a bio for your character(s) and we’ll add them to the list below!
You may RP students, muggles, or both. Ru and I will be taking care of the professor and his assistant (we may or may not have some surprises in store for you… ). You may also bring in any necessary extras if a certain scene asks for it, the more realistic we make this, the better! If you have any ideas of extra characters you’d like to add in besides the students and their muggle neighbors, tell us! Want to be a gardener that’s onto them? A thief that breaks into the house at night? A troublesome child that rings the bell and runs away!? ALL CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME. BE CREATIVE!
And for your reference, here is a shot of the board listing all the kids’ challenges. Below is a link to see a larger version. CLICK HERE FOR LARGER VERSION!
Please remember to follow all SS rules while RPing, and, most of all, don’t forget to have FUN!!!

Allegra couldn’t deny the relief she felt as she and Adam fell into another sort of communication. For the first time all week, she wasn’t concerned. She wasn’t thinking about being misunderstood or having her words taken the wrong way. She wasn’t thinking about what she was supposed to say, or what he wanted to hear from her. In fact, she wasn’t thinking at all. She didn’t have to. She didn’t need to worry about if they were going to argue, because for the first time in a long time everything was out on the table. Not solved, but visible. Out of hiding, all of the fears and the insecurities. And though they weren’t pretty, they were no longer hidden, and there was progress in that.
For the first time in what felt like forever, she was trusting Adam wholeheartedly. She wasn’t being careful or cautious, she was diving in. Perhaps Adam was concerned about them getting comfortable with one another again, but it didn’t seem as though Allegra was interested in taking it slow. She missed him, could he blame her? She returned the kiss he placed on her lips lovingly, finally feeling as though she and Adam were actually together — in a single moment. Neither of them planning or thinking or worrying or arguing or preparing for the next retort — just there, together, finally comfortable enough to let each other close again.
Eventually, Allegra separated from him after a long, vague amount of time she couldn’t pinpoint. Everything was fuzzy around Adam, blurry somehow. She felt hazy as she broke apart, only to peck his lips lovingly in the next moment. She shared a glance with him, her gray eyes filled with a soft sort of sparkling, as though truly recognizing him again. Adam. Adam who cared about her, protected her, kept her hands warm and shared hot chocolate. She felt her heart swell but tried to be cautious, knowing things weren’t put back together. She didn’t want to get her hopes up if he was still having doubts, but it was hard not to. She loved him too much.
“Hi Sunshine.”

Adam couldn’t remember the last time he smiled as much as he did after their kiss. Obviously, it must’ve been some time over a week ago. And then she spoke with that familiar, comforting soft voice of hers, merely uttering two equally familiar words, and the boy’s smile widened to something almost comical, his expression transforming into that of a child who’d just witnessed a rather impressive magic trick. But that’s how hearing his nickname, the one reserved strictly for the person who rewarded him with it, felt - like something magical. It was almost silly how fresh and new all of the words and gestures that had once felt so familiar, so ordinary in their abundance, suddenly felt now. Every step to the normalcy he’d taken for granted felt grand, exciting.
“Hi, Moon…” There was a hazy quality to the boy’s gaze as he took in the sight of Allegra so close. She was adorable. How could he have been anything less than loving to something so adorable? “I miss you,” he added softly. It was a strange statement to make when the subject of his longing was half draped on him, but he didn’t elaborate. If anyone could understand what he meant, it was Allegra. He dropped his hand from the side of her expression to wrap both arms around her frame instead, gently squeezing the tiny Ravenclaw further in, practically trapping her in a hug.
“You’re rather cute, you know that?” Adam pointed out playfully, pulling away just enough so that he could see Allegra’s expression. “I think Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds deserve a thank you letter, actually. Give them some recognition for their good work, y’know?” he went on, his eyebrows furrowed as he playfully contemplated this.

Allegra sighed softly with his next words. "I know." She understood. "I miss you too." It was easy to understand what he meant. The mention of it made her light eyes flicker with a new thoughtfulness, quiet and preoccupied until he spoke again. "You're rather cute, you know that?"
She laughed. "Rather cute?" Here she was, considering diving back into the contemplation of their bigger issues, and he decided to comment on... cute? How cute she was? Allegra laughed before she could consider filtering herself, rolling her eyes as he decided her parents needed to be notified with an official thank you.
"And what about Mr. and Mrs. Kipling?" Allegra countered with raised eyebrows. "Obviously they deserve recognition as well..." She grinned. "You're arguably much cuter than I am. In fact, I'd be willing to bet on it." She glanced around as though expecting to find thousands of people nearby with readied opinions. "Let's take a poll." She started to climb off the porch swing as though she might run back to the castle for opinions that very instant.

Adam smiled but scrunched his nose disapprovingly at Allegra’s statements. When she suddenly began to slip away with the purpose of ‘taking a poll’, the Slytherin sat up. “What?! C’mon, we already know who they’d vote for,” he protested, bringing Allegra back into him with one gentle pull from the arm still around her waist. “…Me, obviously. But I’d rather not put you through the humiliation of seeing so many students gushing over me,” he explained with mock seriousness, as if he was only holding the girl hostage for her own good.

Allegra allowed herself to be pulled back with new interest behind her gaze, listening as he decided that they both knew who the rest of the school would vote for. She was already rolling her eyes in anticipation of some argument for her own cuteness (as Adam Kipling was known to defend) when he quite suddenly decided the real winner would be… him. Allegra was so surprised by this she had no chance to pretend to be offended, a genuine and joyous laugh escaping her lips at his words, so smoothly determined. “You!?” she repeated, only laughing further at the look of seriousness on his familiar features.
In a matter of seconds, she had tackled him back onto the porch swing, completely ruining her own chances of being intimidating as she covered his expression in loving kisses. And then leaving him laying down, as if she did this every day, she nonchalantly sat on top of him as though he were a part of the porch swing itself. Crossing her legs comfortably and now using him as a cushion, she leaned forward to take her hot chocolate into her hands and take a sip.
“You’re too cute, someone might try to steal you,” Allegra explained her actions casually, as though her sitting on him would both protect him and claim him as her own to passerby. Since everyone was apparently in agreement that Adam Kipling was the cutest, someone had to protect him from 'all the students gushing over him'.

Adam’s mock serious expression cracked with amused laughter when Allegra reacted to his words, rewarding him with kisses before switching roles, her now becoming the kidnapper. When she explained that someone may try to steal him, the Slytherin raised his eyebrows, lifting himself slightly by resting on his elbows. “Oh yeah?” He paused, smiling as he admired the sight of Allegra nonchalantly sipping from her hot chocolate, like all of this was completely normal behaviour. “Isn’t that technically what you’re doing, Reynolds? Stealing the cutest person in Hogwarts?”

Allegra considered his words with mock thoughtfulness, her light eyes narrowing slightly as she evaluated his statement. “I don’t like the word ‘stealing’,” she decided precariously, flashing him a sparkling smile. “I’m merely… keeping you company.” By sitting on him. And claiming him for the world to see as though she’d just staked a flag on a new continent. She took another sip of her hot chocolate before setting it down delicately on the table, taking her time. Eventually, after luxuriously running her hands through her hair and flipping it over her shoulder, she turned to look at him once again. “Is that a problem?”

Adam raised his eyebrows incredulously as Allegra decided she was merely ‘keeping him company’ and chuckled. He grew silent, watching as the girl casually set her chocolate down and brushed her hair, admiring the sight from his new vantage point. It was always weirdly hypnotizing watching Allegra do the most basic, normal things, as if sipping hot chocolate or brushing one’s hair suddenly became fascinating if it was the little Ravenclaw who did it. Adam snapped out of this mild daze when Allegra spoke again.
Smiling, he shook his head like some obedient little schoolboy. “No problem at all,” he replied, pushing himself off his elbows and onto the palms of his hands so he could sit up further. With Allegra’s expression now much closer, he leaned in the small distance required to meet her lips with his own in a sweet and brief peck kiss. “Though I think there’s other ways to keep me company that look a little less like kidnapping…” he pointed out casually, eyebrows raising playfully.

Allegra returned the peck kiss he placed on her lips and promptly feigned ignorance as he suggested there might be other ways of keeping him company that didn’t involve sitting on him like a piece of furniture. “Really?” she replied with wide eyes, looking as though this rather ridiculous scenario was all she knew. “How?” She bit her lip, blinking at him blankly for a long moment before pecking his lips lovingly. She pulled back with a dazed smile, her interest in his answer clearly more teasing than serious.
“Do you have any suggestions?” She kissed him again, pulling back only to continue this silly conversation with mischief behind her silver eyes. “Does this mean you want me to get off of you?” Allegra deduced with raised eyebrows. In the next second, she moved so she was more comfortably sitting on his lap, now face to face with him as her legs wrapped around his torso. Somehow she had managed to become even more attached to him than before. “Should I go?” She kissed him again, and broke apart only to show off the full teasing grin she was no longer able to suppress, her arms gently wrapping around his shoulders. “Because I can just go.”

With Allegra’s ‘really?’, Adam nodded his head silently, unaware of the generous share of kisses that would follow this playful conversation. It didn’t take very long for the boy to become distracted, his attention more on returning every kiss Allegra rewarded him than on answering any of her playful questions. He only snapped out of this daze when the girl suggested leaving, an option he immediately rejected, “No… No, you shouldn’t go.” He admired her expression for a silent moment, a sort of distracted quality to his gaze. It was too easy to lose focus around Allegra, especially when she was being impossibly adorable.
“You can’t go, what if someone comes and steals the cutest student in Hogwarts? Wouldn’t you feel bad about that?” Adam decided, an eyebrow raising inquisitively. “No, I think you have to be around full-time, Moon. It’s the only way,” he went on with playful determination. There was a bit of irony in the joke, seeing as it wasn’t that long ago that he’d decided they needed distance, but Adam’s mind was obviously not on those serious matters at the moment.

Allegra laughed softly, caught off guard, as Adam decided she should stay around full-time in order to protect him from those who might try to steal the cutest student. “Well, if it’s the only way…” She smiled, genuinely, unable to help admiring him. He really was adorable. It wasn’t fair. Even as she attempted to keep up the joking energy, she grew distracted by his features so near to her own — the funny things he said. She leaned forward and kissed him once again, this time the teasing gone from the gesture. She just wanted to kiss him. After all, she wasn’t sure when she’d have a chance again.
She hadn’t missed the irony of his earlier words, but ignored it for the sake of the moment together. She didn’t want to worry about it, and didn’t really need to, completely distracted by the kiss that lasted far longer than she had anticipated. Eventually, Allegra separated from him only to peck his lips lovingly and offer up a warm smile, admiring him for a few brief moments before the silence fell between them comfortably. And eventually, as they tend to do, these little concerns found their way back into her thoughts, despite how desperately she didn’t want to think about them.
Part of her wondered... Should she have been embarrassed by how clearly she was in love with him? By how blatantly she didn’t want this upcoming distance? Perhaps another girl, in a different situation, would have heard the “we need some space” talk and walked out then and there to give him the space he desired, too proud to hang around. But she wasn’t sure how to proceed, what the right thing to do was. He had asked for space, and yet… here they were, glued to one another, joking. Like it was all normal. Was she just waiting for him to ask her to go? She couldn’t help feeling just a little bit pathetic, like she was taking any time with him that he was willing to give her, just waiting for the impending separation rather than asking for what she really wanted — for him not to leave.
At the same time, she knew it wasn’t fair to ask that of him - that he deserved the space to think and figure everything out, if that was what he wanted. In the next moment, she wondered vaguely if she was distracting him from whatever he needed to be doing to feel better about this, about them. Perhaps she wasn’t helping, maybe she was making it worse. All of these rational (and irrational) thoughts raced through her mind all at once as the silence fell between them, but she looked hardly different as she offered up another soft smile.
Should she offer to go? Should she ask him to go? She didn't like any of these options. Perhaps she could just see how this would work out, just not worry about it at all. ...That didn't seem like a very viable option either. The slightest look of indecision crossed her expression before she suddenly leaned forward and hugged him. Burrowing her expression in the crook of his neck, her sigh against his skin seemed to explain everything she was feeling a thousand times more effectively than her words ever could have.

Adam, who remained blissfully unaware of any thoughts torturing the poor girl before him, happily returned her gestures and smiles, clearly not on the same page as her at all. It was terrible, and it made him the most unreliable decision-maker in Hogwarts history, but in all honesty he’d simply forgotten about many of the things that had been said just over an hour ago. Well, not forgotten, but he simply wasn’t actively keeping it in mind, reminding himself of it. Somewhere in the back of his mind he still knew things had to change, that he had work to do, but right now he was simply too distracted. It was impossible to think of their problems and their broken promises when, for the first time in a long time, things finally felt… right. Normal.
With Allegra’s expression gone as it disappeared in the crook of his neck, Adam’s gaze shifted to the castle in the background instead, absentmindedly watching the figures behind the lit windows. He returned the girl’s hug, wrapping his arms snuggly around her frame. As she sighed, his brows furrowed slightly, though he didn’t catch the dozen thoughts hiding in this one small action. “Are you tired?” he asked, assuming the girl was merely exhausted.

Allegra nodded to his chest as he asked if she was tired. That was true. At least, partly. Suddenly, winding down from the fun of their conversation, she realized… She felt sad. Really, really sad. But she wasn’t sure why. After a few long moments of indulging in the familiar comfort of Adam Kipling, she pulled back and faltered, debating being brave. It would be so easy to just stay quiet, enjoy his company, perhaps even spend the night joking and laughing and watching the moving pictures box. Who knew how long it would take for him to decide to leave? Perhaps by then he would have changed his mind.
…
It was with this particular thought that Allegra seemed to realize how utterly pathetic she was being.
If Adam wanted space, why wasn’t he being responsible and taking it? And why wasn’t she asking him to stick to what he said, or admit to changing his mind? This middle area wasn’t fair to either of them. And she loved Adam, desperately, but he hadn’t been the best boyfriend in the last week. In fact, he’d been a pretty awful friend as well. And then, after all of that, he… asked for space just to pull her close an hour later and joke around like nothing had happened? His words said one thing, his actions another. And the aftermath of this obscurity of intention— something she was starting to feel now — wasn’t great. Pulling back from a kiss just to wonder when the next time she’d see him, wasn’t fun. And it certainly didn’t seem like he wanted space in this particular moment, but she doubted he had changed his mind about the concept as a whole.
So… what was this? Had he changed his mind entirely, and this little glimpse of normalcy was his way of telling her? Or was this just… fun? She couldn’t blame him. It was fun, to be like this. To pretend that things were back to normal. But they weren’t. And she wasn’t exactly helping, she wasn’t stopping any of this. Because beyond all else, she wanted to be back like this with him again. But it wasn’t really back to normal. Not yet.
Allegra sighed another sigh, and decided to be brave. “Adam.” Her eyes were kind, but sad. “What are we doing?”

Adam analyzed closely the expression that revealed itself to him again, this time filled with a thoughtfulness he hadn’t expected. As Allegra spoke, asking what they were doing, his eyebrows furrowed. “What are we doing?” he repeated, making a question out of the question. He wasn’t sure if this was the beginning of another joke. “We’re… sitting out on—” he stopped abruptly as, quite suddenly, it dawned on him. Allegra wasn’t joking. He paused for a moment, examining her expression closely, scanning her features for the hints he’d somehow missed.
“What do you mean?” he finally asked, suspicious of where this was going but not wanting to make any assumptions.

“I thought you wanted space.” Allegra hated saying it, the words felt funny tumbling from her lips, but they did, in a soft voice barely above a whisper.

Adam was silent for a moment, examining the girl before him, and her words, carefully. “I don’t want space,” he replied, pausing for a moment afterward as he gathered his thoughts. “I’m not… It’s not something that I want, Moon.” He was mildly offended with her choice of words, as if being away from her was supposed to be some sort of five-star exotic vacation for him. “I just think we need it. To figure things out, y’know?”
He paused, planning to leave his response there, but thought better of it. He didn’t want Allegra getting an idea that was different from his own, to think that ‘space’ meant something similar to a break-up, that he was doubting whether to be with her or not. That had never been a question for the boy. “What I mean is, to figure out things beyond wanting to be together. I mean… I already know that I want to be with you, for as long as you’ll have me, but… that’s not everything, is it? Just wanting to be together can’t be the only requirement for this to work, can it?” He gave Allegra a questioning look, not necessarily expecting a response to the question but more of a silent way of asking, do you know what I mean? They were rather lousy at being on the same page lately, after all. “And I can’t really figure out those things with you around because… I get distracted. You’re distracting.” He flashed her a small, guilty smile. The observation wasn’t supposed to be an insult, he obviously enjoyed the distraction of Allegra Reynolds, and there was no better example of that than the past half hour.

Allegra remained quiet as Adam explained that he didn’t want space. Her brows furrowed and for the first time ever she wished the cameras were still up in the cottage so she could show him the tape back. Wasn’t that the opposite of what he’d said just a couple hours ago? But she stayed silent, nodding as he seemed to look for confirmation from her in his gaze. It did make sense — that they needed to figure out things beyond wanting to be together. She understood that. But it was a little hard for her to understand why they needed to be apart to work this out. “You’re distracting.”
She smiled softly, knowing what he meant, but a little uncomfortable with his word choice. It wasn’t just her — it was them, as a unit. A team. But couldn’t they grow? Learn to be less ‘distracting’ to each other, and better at communicating? It was true that together they often got a little off the path, but how would being apart be any better? In her experience, things were always harder when they were apart. Communication got blurry, intentions confusing. Was this how it would always be when they faced a problem? They’d meet up just to apologize and then have to separate to do the hard work of figuring out what was really wrong? Weren’t they supposed to be doing that together?
“I’m being distracting now,” Allegra deduced easily, not offended but simply trying to string things together. “So I should go?”

Adam’s expression became puzzled with Allegra’s conclusion. He’d never set up a schedule for this ‘separation’ time, and found no immediate response coming to mind. Should they separate right now, while they were still on decent terms and conscious of the work they had to do? Or should they give in to temptation and end the day together, pushing off the unpleasant matters for tomorrow? He couldn’t be sure, and he also didn’t want to decide for Allegra what she should do. “I was thinking we’d say goodnight at some point and I’d head back to the dorms.”

Allegra’s brows furrowed and she blinked. He was planning on saying goodnight and separating… eventually. Like this was just another normal night for them? What, so he wanted to continue things as normal but do some deep thinking on his own in his spare time? Or was this their last day together for a while, and he just didn’t care to speed it along? This only confused her all the more and she attempted to keep a straight face, but it was difficult and eventually she let out a little laugh.
“You don’t know what we’re doing either!” she accused softly, her head falling to his chest as another giggle escaped her lips. She didn’t mean to insult him but she couldn’t help being amused in an ironic sort of way. Here she was, trying to figure out Adam’s plan and… he didn’t have a plan! Or at least, that was how it seemed. At least, he didn’t know the proper protocol any more than she did.
She sat up, trying to keep a straight face but failing, ending up with a dazzling sort of smile on her disbelieving expression. “Alright, so we’d say goodnight and you’d go back to the dorms and…?” Fill in the blank. “Figure things out?” It was the most vague phrase she’d ever heard. "What does that mean?"

Adam’s expression cracked into a sheepish and guilty smile with Allegra’s accusation, unable to keep himself from chuckling softly along to the melody of her giggles. He couldn’t help but see the humour gently coating this otherwise confusing and unpleasant situation. But the amusement didn’t last long, concern quickly taking its place, and Adam’s features filled with thoughtfulness once again. “Alright, so we’d say goodnight and you’d go back to the dorms and…? Figure things out?”
“No. Sleep,” Adam replied, serious before allowing a smile to give away the fact that he was teasing. In typical Adam Kipling fashion, he was delaying their entrance into a serious, less pleasant conversation. He sighed softly, smile disappearing and a new thoughtfulness taking over his features. “And then I’ll see you in a few days, Moon, if you’re still around.” He hated how casually it all sounded, but he couldn’t give Allegra an exact timeline of the next few days either. Certain that this obviously wouldn’t be enough for the girl, and rightfully so, Adam paused, taking a couple moments to gather his thoughts. His gaze drifted away from Allegra’s expression, ironically in an attempt to focus. “I just don’t… I mean, despite—despite this moment, and… and everything tonight, I just—it doesn’t feel right to just, go right back to being normal. It feels like… well, like I told you - a distraction. We’re just being distracted right now. But I’ve still… I’ve got questions. Not for you, but for me. I don’t know why… I don’t know why I behaved the way I did, Moon.” He sighed, his gaze finally agreeing to meet hers. “I mean, I’ve got an idea, but…” he trailed off, momentarily done with trying to put words and explanations to his thoughts. It was difficult, and exhausting, and he wasn’t sure it was even helping clear any of Allegra’s confusion at all. After all, he was still a bit lost on everything going on as well.

“You’re right, it doesn’t feel right to go back to normal yet,” Allegra immediately agreed with his first few words. That’s why she had stopped this little teasing flirtation, wasn’t it? Because she felt that, too. That things weren’t normal yet. But they didn’t have to exile to separate sides of the planet either — there had to be some in between. Right? She listened, hoping to find clarity in his next explanations but only finding herself more confused. He had questions. For him. Her brows furrowed once more. Yeah, she had some questions for him, too… She kept her commentary in her own mind, honestly trying to understand what it was that he wanted. And then… He trailed off. Just as she thought he was getting somewhere — something that almost resembled communication, he stopped. After a moment, she hesitantly spoke.
“So… let’s not be distracting to each other,” Allegra suggested, her voice quiet as she proposed this radical theory. Slowly, as though afraid he might run off, she untangled herself from their close proximity and sat on the other side of the bench, facing him with an expression that seemed to suggest she simultaneously wanted to go hide behind a tree and also say each of the thousand thoughts that were currently in her mind.
“You can… talk to me, you know.” She offered up a weak smile. "I'm not just a pretty face," she joked softly, pushing her hair behind her ears as she sat up straight. "I'm a good listener. It's sort of my thing." Since she doesn't talk very much, she listens, get it? Hah. Apparently Adam wasn't the only one who made jokes in moments of discomfort.

It was almost comical how immediately panicked Adam’s expression became when Allegra began to separate from him, only to reposition herself on the other end of the porch swing. He seemed relieved that the girl hadn’t spontaneously decided to run off, but mostly he was just confused. Until she spoke again, suggesting that he could speak to her, that she wasn’t just a pretty face. With this statement, he smiled, amused.
“I can’t talk to you,” he decided, shaking his head with an apologetic smile on his expression. “It’s—I get—I blank out,” he confessed. And this was why he needed that moment alone, to gather his thoughts, to know what it was that he even wanted to say. So that, next time he saw Allegra, he could just… say it. Say everything he wanted to say, answer all the questions she had. Merely speaking of his thoughts or emotions was like a particularly difficult potions exam for the boy. He needed to prepare.

Allegra couldn’t help being both endeared and confused by his response to her. There was something inherently adorable about Adam’s confession, but it didn’t quite make sense to her yet. She took his hand into her own, unable to resist. “What do you mean?” she complained softly, a smile still lingering on her expression as she scanned his features for signs of an explanation. Her voice was gentle, not wanting to interrogate him but honestly curious.
“Why do you blank out?” It seemed the obvious question to ask. Then she seemed to realize, she didn’t know… “Also what does blank out mean?” She could deduce it's vague meaning from what he said, but she wanted more. Surely Adam Kipling had an exact definition for her.

Adam welcomed the cool, familiar touch of Allegra’s little hand, his gaze dropping to it as the girl bombarded him with questions. Well, it was just three perfectly reasonable questions, but it was no secret how little the boy enjoyed providing explanations. But even through his discomfort with the mere idea of having to explain things he didn’t immediately have a dictionary definition for, Adam couldn’t help a hint of amusement to sparkle in his blue eyes. Allegra’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed, and he appreciated them probably more than he was letting on, but it was terribly amusing how much she sounded like a very patient, concerned psychologist. He wondered vaguely if she was even aware of it, his gaze moving up to meet her own with the ghost of a smile on his lips.
………………
And THIS was why he couldn’t talk to Allegra Reynolds. Here she was, being a caring girlfriend and asking him perfectly sound questions, and beyond even bothering to formulate a response, Adam was thinking of how funny it was that she was treating him like a patient at the doctor’s office. The urge to tease and joke while being horribly endeared was too strong. Focus.
“Uh…” What was the question again? Oh right, blanking out. Why. “I don’t know,” he replied honestly, looking away and clearing his throat softly. He rolled his free hand into a fist, brought it to his lips and turned his expression away in an attempt to hide the smile threatening to reveal his amusement. “Yeah, I…” He cleared his throat again and lowered his hand, returning his eyes to the one around Allegra's. “I just… I forget things. Answers. And then… when you’re not there anymore, I realize what I should’ve said, or what I meant to say, y’know?”

Allegra seemed completely oblivious to the amusement Adam was finding in her rapt attention, her large gray eyes practically the size of moons themselves as she attempted to decode the few strings of thought he offered her. It was like trying to learn another language! What was he trying to say? Her brows furrowed and her eyes seemed to be trying to see right through him, staring as though the answers would be written somewhere on his person. She looked, amusingly enough, like she was trying to take some exam.
"Well, what is it about me that makes you forget?" Allegra asked, honestly curious. She sat with her legs criss crossed beneath her, her posture impeccable as if the mystery could only be solved by her complete and devoted attention.
