The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches…born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies…and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will power the Dark Lord knows not…and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives…the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…

As soon as he heard this prophecy, one of Voldemort's followers reported to his master. Voldemort went over to the Potters' house, killing James and Lily and trying to kill Harry. But there was no way of knowing if the prophecy applied to Harry or Neville Longbottom.

What if Voldemort went after Neville instead of Harry? What if Harry had been a normal child, growing up with his parents in a wizarding community? What if Neville had been the one that was orphaned, and was raised by his grandmother as a famous wizard? How would Harry and Neville be different? How would the events that happened during Harry's first year at Hogwarts change? This is all up to you.

Neville shrugged. "I guess," he replied. He followed the large man up the steps of the school and into the Great Hall, where he saw a raggedy old hat sitting on a wooden stool. I wonder what that's for, Neville thought as he stood in a line with the other first years.

"A hat?" Kat said "What is that about?" it seemed so strange that a hat was in a stool, and in the center of a space, "Oh, my god, are we supposed to wear the hat and be in the center of that room??" she thought, she didn't like to have many people looking at her, and especially not when they're suppose to name which house they'll get into, "I don't deal great with that kind of attention" she said, but somehow she was not nervous, however she had a weird feeling.

Kat went over and made herself some room in the line, waiting for any professor's intructions, because the large man wasn't around anymore, instead there was a woman coming right towards them, she seemed like a professor, or so she thought, and she looked so serious, Kat wondered what subject would she be teaching.

Liam stared at the hat. A hat? We have to put on that ugly hat? he thought. Dad said the Sorting was hard! Putting a hat on isn't hard... Liam glanced at the stern-looking witch. She looked like she was in charge, but she was not the headmaster. The headmaster was Professor Dumbledore. He knew that, at least. He wondered how all the first years would put the hat on. He hoped they did not go in alphebetical order; he did not want to try the hat on first or last. The middle was good for him...too bad his last name began with B.

Liam glanced at Hermione, wondering if she was sane. "You were hoping for a test?" he repeated. "Do you want to be a Ravenclaw?"

Harry stared at the girl who had practically asked for a test. "She probably does want to be in Ravenclaw. Maybe we get to fight the hat?" he asked. He doubted it, because the hat looked a hundred years old. "Oh, I hope we don't have to go in alphabetical order, cause then I'd be far away." he added.

Teagan was upset. She was in the middle of the line. She had to wait for all those people. She heard what Harry said, and replied "I hope we do go in alphabetical order, cause then I'll be nearer to the front! I'm so excited!" She jumped up and down a couple times.

Kat stood in the line listening to her friends comments, "Fight the hat? That would be fun" she said, thinking how odd it would be, "Well, If it's in order I'll be one of the last ones, my last name is Thomas" continued.

She stared at the professor, who was now closer to where they were standing, "She looks like a professor you don't mess with" she said to Tea, in a lower tone so the professor wouldn't hear.

Liam grinned cheerfully at Hermione. "Then don't act like a Ravenclaw, or you'll end up one," he said. "Think brave thoughts, not smart thoughts." He grinned at Harry. "Aren't I smart? Brave thoughts, not smart thoughts, to get into Gryffindor? I hope we don't fight the hat, it wouldn't be much fun."

"Yeah, then we don't have to listen to her." he replied. To Liam's question about him being smart, he answered, "Well, just don't act too smart, or you'll be in Ravenclaw! Ugh, this is getting boring." He was starting to forget about his nervousness some. After all, his mum had gotten into Gryffindor, and so had his whole dad's family. But Sirius's family had all been in Slytherin, and he ended up a Gryffindor. Was it possible the other way around? He hoped not.

"Oh, that's too bad." Tea replied to Kat's comment on her last name. "Mine is Breslin, so I'd be near the front! Hopefully there wouldn't be too many A's, though." she said thoughtfully. She hoped something would happen soon; she just couldn't stand it here. It was so tantalizing!

Quirrel watched in fake delight at the many kids gathered up. "Filthy little kids." quirrel heard a mutter in his turban. "Yes my master, the longbottom boy shall be taken care of soon enough, I promise my lord." Quirrel whispered.

Dumbledore heard a tiny whisper but decided to forget about it. He was waiting for the sorting so he could make the announcements.

Neville listened to the conversation around him, too shy and too nervous to join in. He just wanted to get the sorting over with so he knew what house he would be in. Finally, the professor stood up and began calling people up to do the sorting.

ooc: everyone can just RP themselves going up and getting sorted. To make it easier, it doesn't have to be in alphabetical order.

"Longbottom, Neville!" Neville heard the professor yell. Neville walked nervously to the stool and sat down before placing the hat over his head. Please put me in Gryffindor, Neville pleaded with the hat. Neville hear a voice in his ear saying, "Gryffindor? But you would do so well in Slytherin . . ." No, no, no, Neville begged. "All right then," the hat whispered to Neville. "GRYFFINDOR" The sorting hat shouted the last word out to the whole hall.

Grinning wildly, Neville jumped off the stool and ran to join his friends who were already seated at the Gryffindor table.

Kat watched as many of her friends were getting sorted to Gryffindor, "I hope I get there too" she thought.

"Thomas, Katherine" she heard, so as quick as her friends she jumped in where the stool was, she slowly sat and put the hat in her head, as soon as she did that she started to hear something but couldn't identify the words, "I must be going crazy" she thought, then someone replied back "Oh, no, not crazy", for a second she thought that it was the hat who was talking to her, but that was put to an end when she heard "GRYFFINDOR!" and applauses kept coming from the table her friends where at.

"Great! Mind if I seat next to you Hermione?" she said, and suddenly took a seat in the Gryffindor table as well, "Yay Neville! We're almost all in Gryffindor!" and smiled at him, she couldn't be happier.

He grinned.

"Looks like we're all in Gryffindor, I'll have to write back, Mum would have gone mad if I wasn't!"

“Black, William!” Liam heard the professor call his full name. With a deep breath, he stepped up to the stool and sat down. The stern professor placed the hat on his head, and Liam looked up, trying to see the hat, but he couldn’t. It was actually on his head. Ah, a Black, Liam heard a voice say, You can go with the other Blacks… Liam froze. It was going to put him in Slytherin. “No, I don’t want to be a Slytherin,” he whispered fervently. The hat fell silent, then said, Oh, you’re that one’s son. I did not realize… Liam half-smiled. “I want to be like my dad,” he added in a whisper. He hoped the hat would think he had what it took to be a Gryffindor. You’re certainly bold enough, the hat murmured in his head, you’ll go in GRYFFINDOR!” Liam let out a sigh of relief as he handed the hat to the stern professor and hurried to the Gryffindor table. He sat down by the other first years who were there and waited for Harry to be sorted.

“Malfoy, Draco!” Draco loped up to the stool and sat down. The hat only sat on his head for a few brief seconds before it shouted for all to hear, “Slytherin!” Draco took the hat off with a smirk and strolled over to the Slytherin table, where he sat down next to Crabbe and Goyle.

"Potter, Harry!" Harry heard the woman call. He walked up to the stool, sat down, and put the hat on. Liam had already been sorted into Gryffindor, so he had to be sorted there. 'Gryffindor, Gryffindor, Gryffindor!' he thought. Then, strange as it was, he heard a voice. The hat was speaking to him! 'Gryffindor, eh? Where your father and mother went? Well, that's a perfect fit!' it replied. Harry hoped sincerely that the hat wasn't speaking to everyone in the room. "GRYFFINDOR!" it shouted out now. He ran as fast as he could towards the Gryffindor table, and sat down next to Liam. He hi-fived his best friend, and laughed at their previous nervousness.

"Breslin, Teagan!" she shouted. Teagan hurried up to the stool and sat down. Holding her breath, she stopped thinking about which house she wanted and started thinking about the hat. It was really old, and it slipped down over her head. It smelled kind of funny, too. Like it was really old. The hat was very surprised that she wasn't thinking about which house she wanted, so he said, "You're a strange little girl, I think I'll put you in... in... in...." He seemed to have trouble making up his mind. "Oh, whatever." he said. "GRYFFINDOR!" he yelled out. She shook her head, having completely forgotten what she was doing, and ran over to the Gryffindor table, only having to run back because she'd forgotten to take off the hat. She sat down near some of her friends and sighed.
