Overview

Friends, Rajesh Atreyu-Rehhman and Minerva "Mouse" Durand, met after the younger between the two transferred to Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, at the start of Mouse's sixth term and Raj's seventh, fall of 2109. With Mouse having been sorted in Ravenclaw, the pair were able to form a fast friendship through their shared commons (and specifically the Book Nook) until the end of the term came and it was time for Raj to leave the school behind and move on to the next chapter.

Mouse was delighted to get to meet up with him over summer for some studying assistance in preparation for her delayed OWL exams before also visiting his family home and getting to see the creature sanctuary his fathers operated.

When September 2110 rolled around, it was back to Hogwarts for Mouse and the two were able to keep up correspondence via owl. Now, Hogsmeade is rolling around and Mouse is looking forward to potentially getting a chance to see Raj again before summer.

Scene One: A Hogsmeade Visit

She wasn't really expecting to get to see Raj very long, if at all, even if he'd made the point to mention in his letter that he would be trying to be there for Hogsmeade weekends. He had two younger sisters she knew were the reason for the visit, and he'd of course want as much time with them as possible. And yet that knowledge still hadn't seemed to stop her from taking extra care of her appearance that morning in the hopes of a brief encounter. And it hadn't stopped her from having sat herself on High Street on one of the open benches with a warm to go cup of cocoa while she just happened to hope she'd spot him.

She knew she'd miss him, he having been one of her first friends at Hogwarts when she'd transferred the previous year. But she supposed she hadn't been quite expecting how quiet the halls would sound without him and Jude around. Especially after only a year of really knowing them.

With a small sigh, she raised her cup to her lip and blew on it to try to cool down the liquid inside before taking a small sip. While she might have felt a little anxious, she was the picture of composed - one leg crossed over the other and her large tan sweater wrapped warmly around herself. It was definitely a cold day, but she liked the air brisk. And warming charms certainly kept her comfortable.

Since the start of a term that no longer included him, Rajesh had found the visits to Hogsmeade took on a different feel when one was an adult. Granted he still enjoyed them very much when he could make it, and the time he got to spend with his sisters outside of the holidays. Though as he apparated to the end of the wizarding town this time around, he had to admit to himself there was another presence he hoped to come across in his wanderings. Something he would never admit to said presence in the various letters they had exchanged since the summer, nor the same sisters who had been kind enough to keep him in the loop for the weekends he could spend with them.

Having left Dy and Nads to their own devices after a brief visit, not wanting to monopolize them on their winter fun in the village, the elder Atreyu-Rehman found himself strolling along High Street. His dark gaze flickering from storefront to storefront and random passerby both adult and child, just taking it all in with his gloved hands in his coat pocket. It took turning away from Honeydukes to think he spotted a familiar profile seated on a bench.

Raj tentatively made his way closer, smiling softly above the Ravenclaw scarf still tied around his neck as he confirmed it was Mouse once he was close enough. And when she had turned one way, moved with the grace he’d learned while interacting with dragons and hippogriffs and took the seat at the other end of the bench. The university student not readily acknowledging her presence at first as if oblivious to his new companion.

Perhaps it was silly that she was sitting here on a bench instead of trying to interact with some of the people that were still students at Hogwarts. It was likely she could have spent time with Olivia or Charlie, whichever one was not currently with Keighley, or maybe she could have seen if Desiree had wanted to go shopping together. But the thoughts hadn't even occurred to her earlier - she'd just been so excited by the prospect of seeing her friend. Which led her to wonder why it was she couldn't just gather the courage to ask him for some of his time if he'd already been coming this way. Did she think he was going to say no? Not likely. But maybe it was the idea that he would have said yes, maybe feeling like he had to because she asked, thus taking time away from his family that had stopped her.

But that sounded like a cop out excuse still.

She'd turned away from Honeydukes, looking out towards the other end of the street as she thought. She'd nearly heaved a sigh at everything swirling in her head, and she'd been thinking perhaps it was time to just head back up to the castle, when she thought she felt another presence on the other side of the bench. The brunette's head turned, expecting to see one of her peers - perhaps one she was acquainted with - when instead the person who seemed to take up most of her thoughts was seated right there. She couldn't have stopped the smile that spread on her face even if she had wanted to. "Raj! You're here!"

So he hadn’t taken her by surprise, at least the type that would have risked being scalded by whatever resided in the takeaway cup. That was a good sign. And then when he turned fully to face her, Raj was greeted by a smile that made his own expression brighten almost on its own accord. She was happy to see him! “Indeed I am, my dear Mouse,” he remarked back absently letting his arm on the side nearest her to rest on the back on the bench they were both sitting on. “As are you.” Though he supposed it would have been easier to be in the same place at the same time if they had planned to do so.

But he hadn’t wanted to bother her…

“How are you?” he asked, deciding to initiate the usual small talk when catching up. Though it wasn’t like their last letter exchanged had been too long ago and she had seemed well then. “Enjoying the winter day?” It certainly was a decent day to be spending in the wintery wizarding village. Bringing back memories of other Hogsmeade weekends when the castle was home.

She was certainly surprised, but the best type of surprised. And she would have never even considered throwing the hot liquid in her cup at his face. Probably not anyone's face, but she did have to admit particularly his. The fact he referred to her as 'my dear Mouse' was absolutely something she was going to end up over analyzing over and over again in her head when she was back up in the castle on her own. For the time being though, it merely sent a warmth through her and her cheeks tinged perhaps just a slightly brighter shade of pink. She laughed softly, giving a small nod of her head. "I am. Lucky we bumped into each other." The actual audacity she had, as if she hadn't been sitting here hoping for a glimpse of her favorite former Ravenclaw.

Imagine how much easier it would have been too had either had the ability to read the others thoughts - and know both HAD wanted to ask but stopped themselves for... whatever reasons.

It was interesting how now that he WAS here, she couldn't really think of what to say, so the small talk was certainly welcomed. Even if she'd kept him updated in her letters, it still wasn't the same as getting to speak in person and see the other person's expressions. She knew she missed him, but now she knew how much she even just missed being around him. Mouse adjusted herself so her body was facing more towards him while they talked, her shoulder leaning against the wood of the bench near his hand. "I'm good. What about you? You look well! University life seems to be agreeing with you." Glancing around at the street when he asked, she gave another nod and shifted her eyes to him again. "I am. I like being cold. Maybe it's because it's a good excuse to bundle, or just always the perfect occasion for hot chocolate." Which speaking of, she glanced at the warm cup in her hand before offering it towards him in case he wanted a sip. "You visiting your sisters?"

The expression of endearment had passed his lips before he had any thought that it might be taken awkwardly and while Raj might have considered backpedaling, he realized it might serve better to not draw further attention to his words. Besides it wasn’t like it was a lie. She was dear to him, something he hadn’t expected when they had first met quite randomly in the book nook.

“Well, I’m surviving,” he remarked with a chuckle. Uni was a change and starting out, there were still general classes he had to take that weren’t his strong suit. Perhaps when he was learning solely in his degree it might be easier. Or matter more at least. "It's going to take some getting used to for sure." Though he did enjoy the fact he had more freedom to be home and go places like Hogsmeade today.

Raj nodded at her answer knowing the feeling. Sometimes the experiences made the weather worthwhile, in this case though, he politely waved off her offering. “No thank you,” he assured her before nodding again to the affirmative. “Spent some time with them, though not about to monopolize their fun.” They surely didn’t need their older brother hanging around as much as they were a tight-knit family. "But now I'm simply enjoying the familiar surroundings." Incuding his companion if he was honest with himself.

There was no awkwardness from her end at the words. Rather, she quite liked the way the endearment had sounded though already there was a voice in her head telling her to not look too much into it. It was merely words. And they were friends - it was probably simply a friendly greeting.

She giggled a bit, "Surviving is generally a good place to start. Are you enjoying university? Have a favorite class?" The Hogwarts life to university certainly did seem like it would be an adjustment - but not without its pros that she looked forward to. The freedom for one, that would be nice. Getting to strike out on her own instead of the awkward in between she found herself. "What's been the easiest part to adjust too this far?" She asked curiously, though of course she'd also want to know what he had the hardest time with. She was trying to not bombard him further with questions though in her excitement.

She gave a nod of understand at the declination, taking another small sip before pulling her scarf up further and tighter over her face. But not so much as to make it difficult to converse. "I bet they were quite pleased to see you! What did you guys go do?" She was quite glad he hadn't rushed off right away, considering that meant she got to see him. She considered saying as much but saved herself the embarrassment by biting her tongue before she could.

Rajesh found himself smiling at her giggles, though raising an eyebrow as she asked his favorite class as if it would be a surprise. She would likely already know the answer what with knowing him but volunteered “Potions” anyway. It was more his focus with the major he was leaning towards. Magical creatures getting to be more his fun electives. “The studying part…” he answered after a moment, “but not like it’s hard when its simply jumping into more books, just more complicated ideas.” Something they both understood given their Ravenclaw status and love of books and reading.

“Mhmm…Apparently absence does make the heart grow fonder,” he mused with a touch of jest. The girls having seemed to have missed him being there up at the school whenever they needed or wanted him. “Sugarplums…” he answered with a shake of his head at himself more than anyone else. “I tend to have my arm twisted into supplying treats.” And himself without much interest much like their papa.” And then we just wandered a little.” You know to work off those sweet tooths. Until they likely made their way to Honeydukes either with friends or without.

The moment he answered, the giggles turned into a proper laugh. Yes, she definitely should have known that - but considering university had such a bigger inventory of class options she'd wondered if something else had piqued his interest. It was in a way comforting to hear his interests hadn't changed drastically in the last few months, there was something once more familiar about it. About him, she supposed. She'd be lying if she was to say she hadn't been nervous that the previous friendship they'd had wouldn't have dissolved with not seeing each other for a year. "That's fair. At least all years of school pretty much keep you well prepared for being able to study for your success. What has been the hardest adjustment?"

It was hard to not want to read more into the simple statement, but she did her best to not, instead focusing on his time with his sisters. Another soft laugh, another should have been predictable answer. "I don't have the same years of experience as you in being an older sibling, but I already get the feeling supplying sugar is our primary purpose in life." She didn't mind as much as she thought she would - though it was probably helpful she also did not mind having a sweet treat here and there as well. "That sounds like a lovely time, though."

“Feeling like a complete stranger. “ Granted there were fellow students from his year that had also gone to WU and were on the same campus, but it felt like they were so very few and far between compared to the number of people he had known at Hogwarts. Even him, the bookwormish introvert. “That and being on the bottom again.” As a freshman in university, he might as well be an eleven year old all over again thrust into all new things.

“I’m pretty sure it is too…and you’ll get used to it,” he agreed, glad to see how pleasant her tone was when referring to her sibling relationship. The older Ravenclaw easily remembering how offput she had seemed about the situation when they first met in the recesses of their mutual common room and the new parts of her family were still fresh. “Very much so,” Rajesh confirmed with a smile and nod. It was a rewarding experience for pulling himself from his studies and the family home to visit the village currently surrounding them.

As was spending time with his current companion.

A thought that made him just a touch self-conscious, as was the fact they had been mostly talking about him. “I’m…I’m not keeping you from anything am I? Your own fun on this Hogsmeade weekend?”

Scene II
Summer 2111. Mouse has moved in to her new flat and asked Raj to join her on a plant trip.

Was she excited to start to decorate the space that was all hers with some greenery? Absolutely. But was her main excitement for today's excursion primarily to do with the company going with her? Even more so, yes. Mouse still tended to look for whatever excuse she could find to suggest hanging out with Raj - who yes, was one of her closest friends, but it had seemed the year apart for her final term had not done much to make her school girl crush go away. Not that she (she thought) was openly obvious about it.

Pushing open the door to the little plant and flower shop she'd found, having already scoured Noltie's for what she wanted, she held it open so he could enter after her and gave a small smile. "Thank you for coming with me. More and more I find it's more fun to do things with other people than on my own." He might have been one of her favorite companions too but... again, something she'd rather not say aloud.

The occasional run in at Hogsmeade had been nice but Raj found that he missed sharing a common room and classes with Mouse. He wasn’t the most open to new friends while still being friendly to his new classmates, so it wasn’t like he really had anyone he could regularly hang out with for the random coffee trip or study moment. Well maybe his one lab partner could be counted. So, he might…MIGHT… have been looking forward to the summer. Though still with a touch of trepidation over what the younger Ravenclaw’s plans would be after her graduation.

To say he had reacted favorable to news she was remaining in London would be an understatement.

Not that he shared it with anyone. Nope. Cool as a cucumber here.

“You’re welcome,” he remarked as he caught the door and followed her inside the shop. “Glad I can be of assistance then.” You know the whole being the companion for this little fishing expedition. Or the search for the perfect plant as it was. “Was there anything in particular you were looking for?” Just so he could keep his dark eyes open for it amongst the shelves that looked to be filled with all sorts of herbological goodies.

Had she known there was anything akin to him missing her, she probably would have been over the moon about it. But as it was, Mouse hadn't even truly considered the idea of her own feelings being reciprocated. Which perhaps was why she tried to not show any hint of them outwardly, not wanting to make her friendship with him have any strain or awkwardness. Not that she'd had experience in the department, but having to reject a friend's feelings seemed like it would put a damper on a friendship. For now, she'd just be glad that he seemed to enjoy her company as well - and she'd take advantage of that while she could. Her feelings would sort themselves eventually.

Right?

She let go of the door when she felt the weight of it ease, glancing back to see he'd taken it and giving him a smile in the process over her shoulder. Adjusting her bag over her shoulder, she moved closer to a couple of herbs to lean down and survey the leaves a bit more closely. "I want one of something fully green with a nice scent - probably some type of herb I can use in cooking or potions." She preferred the earthy scents associated with an herb over the sweetness in a floral. "But I'd also like some color. Maybe pinks or a baby blue." She was trying to not put TOO many out, but she loved plants so that it was hard to not want to overrun the space. "Do you have any favorites? Flowers?"

Letting the shop door close gently behind him, Raj listened attentively as Mouse laid out ideas on what she thought she wanted. While he did have interest in herbology, the thoughts that kept coming to mind at first were more suitable for potions than the kitchen. Probably a downfall of his continuing lessons. At least he wasn’t stuck on the bones of the human body. He needed to focus more on memories of his papa cooking. “Oh….chives have a purplish pink flower,” he finally answered as it came to him. And was scented and could be cooked with so technically that covered all three of her requirements.

Did he have a favorite? That question brought him up short as it wasn’t exactly something he had ever thought about before. “Don’t really know,” he admitted truthfully. Creatures were after all more his thing in nature. “Sure I think plenty of pretty…and fond of a few useful ones…but nothing sticks out at the moment.”
