An Ivy-Covered Cottage in Germany

In the countryside of Heidelberg, Germany, nestled in the wizarding district of the community, lies a cozy cottage set against a wooded backdrop. This is the home of Ethan and Minerva McCarthy, a place where they can explore their lives after Hogwarts.

First Scene -
Summer 2082, following Minerva's Hogwarts graduation and completion of Ethan's first year at Wizarding University, the two make important summer plans.

She gave Ethan a small tight smile. She knew her mother wasn't anything like them and neither was she. She just was flustered hearing some of the things Edward said trying to compare her to her mother. "Yes, of course I do. I'd like my own things too. They were stolen from me and it would be nice to have them back." Was it worth it though, that was the question. "Maybe we could have them sent to the ministry first and someone there could look them over. You or your dad would know someone, right?" Ethan had been working at the ministry for sometime now and his father was an important person there. They could help she was sure.

She knew he would think it was a bad idea and he had very good reasons. She was crazy to think it would be okay, right? She sighed, "I don't know. He would be the only one I would consider. His wife is a very sweet and good person. How she ever got wrapped up with that mess I could never figure out." She adored Gabby and at the time assumed she'd live with her and Edward and not Leelee once they had been married, but that hadn't been the case. Once Miranda had been born and he left, she was gone and forgotten.

She thought about the children for a moment and nodded, "If Miranda started this year the rest will be staggering in, there are four of them." Yes he said four she was sure. "We can tell Gunnar and wait to tell Chloe. I think we will be fine with Morgan." He was just a baby, so this should be alright. She still wasn't sure with the meeting and she would have to think more about it. Her children were in no way meeting anyone at this point.

"He did, but I'm the reason he even got into that in the first place. If it wasn't for me he wouldn't have known them at all." She knew she couldn't fully blame herself, but it was still hard to wrap her head around that he was actually gone. "I haven't seen his mother in years, I can't even imagine how alone she must be. He was all she had." Vinnie had meant the world to her once upon a time and she couldn't even think about how awful this was for her.

Ethan knew that it was only natural for Minerva to want her things back and to have some of her mother's things that had been left behind. If he were in her position, he knew he would want them too. He just worried about the safety of it all. "Yes, I think that would be a good idea. I think we could talk to MLE just to be safe. Dad knows the department head pretty well. I'm sure it could all be sent there and checked out." And if that was not the correct place, then he was sure that someone there would know who. He just knew plants, not so much potential dark curses.

He still wasn't so sure that any sort of contact or even a relationship with that family was a good idea. "Hmm. Well, I guess you'd know better than me." But was anyone associated with that family and who stayed by choice really sweet and good? Maybe there was something beneath the surface there. "But I really think this is reopening a can of worms. I don't like it.." Not to mention bad memories associated with the past, but who knew what kind of trouble this could lead to. Did this Edward think it was really that easy for Minerva to forgive and forget such awful transgressions by her own family?

Four of them? He wondered how their ages matched up to their own kids. Maybe it wouldn't even be much of an issue, but he didn't want to keep things from his children, it would just make things worse if they somehow found out on their own. But it didn't mean that they needed every detail either. They could just be told in simple, basic terms. "I don't think anything needs to be said just yet anyway. It'll be a few years until Gunnar would be Hogwarts age anyway." And were they completely set on sending him there? Bad things still happened there, and he wondered if that sadistic healer had still managed to hold onto a job there. It was still something that needed to be talked about.

"That might be true, but you really don't know the path he might have taken instead. You really can't blame yourself. He seemed the type to face danger no matter what, and there is nothing about it that is your fault." Even if she hadn't introduced them, who was to say he wouldn't have fallen into that anyway? "That is pretty tragic," he nodded. He couldn't imagine ever losing any of his children, he didn't even want to think about it. "Hopefully she has a good support system." Friends, even extended family... that would help her get through it.

"We could probably ask Oakey too, I mean if we need to." He was a curse breaker after all, they did that sort of thing, didn't they? It was probably a bad things she wasn't fully sure. Though having Ethan's dad involved did make her feel better as well. The man was pretty much a father to her and she knew he wouldn't allow anyone to harm his family either. Thoughts of Ethan's family made her look at the clock, "I was suppose to pick up the children an hour ago. Your mother is going to be worried." She wasn't ever late to get the kids.

[b] "I don't, that's why I'm talking to you. I don't know. I want, but I don't know."[/]b She'd love to have more family around. She always felt a little alone when it came to her side with just her and her grandparents, but she wouldn't risk the safety of her own children or husband for her mother's family. "I know it could. I haven't had to take potions in ages I'm not planning on starting over." She had come along way with the therapy and healing.

She nodded knowing he was right. They still had a few years, "IF we even send him there." Were they really going to send him to the school that caused so much stress on them? Had it become safer in recent years? She wasn't sure and would have to look into it more.

"I know he was and he had such the temper, but it's hard not to think if I didn't." She knew it was a forever what if, but she couldn't help but think about it now. Shaking her head she frowned, "She had no one. Justin was her only family. She had been at the ministry so maybe some friends or coworkers, but it's been so many years I just don't know."

"Oh.. yeah, I suppose we could." Ethan had sort of forgotten that Oakey did that sort of thing, but in all honesty, he'd rather keep this to the Ministry rather than pull their friends into it too. He was sure someone at work could handle this just fine. "Well, let's try it this way first, then if it doesn't turn out we can ask him. I think it would be easier, don't you?" It would already be near home anyway, might as well use the local resources they had. "Oh, well, I can go get them if you want. I'm sure she doesn't mind having them there, she might just not know what happened if she was expecting you." Of course, she hadn't mirrored or owled yet either, so she might not have been too concerned just yet.

"No, I know, that's not what I meant," he said with a slight shake of his head. "I think a relationship or any contact with that family is a bad idea. I just found it odd for you to say someone who is a part of it to be sweet and good. But you would know her better than I would." It was hard for him to truly believe that but he hadn't met her either. He took her hand and squeezed it in a show of support. Ethan knew the battles that Minerva had fought and she really had come a long way. He didn't want her to regress just because someone else decided they needed to be a part of her life.

"I guess that's something else we need to discuss," Ethan said with a chuckle as she mentioned her own uncertainty over Gunnar going to Hogwarts. Maybe a topic for another day though and certainly nothing that needed to be decided very soon. They still had several years.

"You really can't play the 'what if' game, Min," he said, giving her a side hug with the arm around her shoulders. "That will drive you crazy and it's already enough to have grief over his death. You can't blame yourself for other people's choices." He could understand how it was easy to do though. "Maybe you should reach out to her. It might make you both feel better." No, he didn't want to reopen old wounds or anything like that, but surely this woman was not associated with that family and it might help with both of their grief.

So they would go through the ministry, that was find with her. Oakey was probably really busy anyway and honestly maybe Ariana should put up some added security until this all worked out. She was close enough to Minerva that it could be unsafe if the Blaze's were not coming around to just be family. "Yes maybe it would be best if you went to get them, but maybe just send her a message saying we will be late. I'm not ready to get them just yet." She needed her nerves to calm down.

"Gabby wasn't part of the family she just married in and many say love is blind, so maybe that was how it happened." She really didn't know how the woman ended up with Edward. "Leelee use to threaten her daily. Hated her in the house." She looked at him a bit though with his comment. She understood it, but at the same time she couldnt help but blink, "My mother was a part of it once. She wasn't evil like them. " She knew what he meant, but she just had to say it.

Yes, she nodded about the Hogwarts thing. It wasn't something they had to think about and her son was not ready to go yet. They had time and would have to use the time wisely. Would they allow him to go or not was a very good question.

"I think I'm going to owl her to meet for lunch. I'll go to London for it since she is there. " She was trying not to do the what if game, she really was, so she didn't comment more about it other than just leaning her head on Ethan's shoulder feeling safer and calmer now that he was there.

"Alright, that's a good idea. I'm sure she won't mind that." And Ethan couldn't really blame Minerva for wanting a little more time for herself. He pulled a piece of parchment from the table closer to him and quickly scribbled a note. Whistling for one of the owls, he tied the note to Gretchen's leg once she perched onto the back of his chair and he sent her off to message his mother.

Ethan listened to her explanation, and he nodded his understanding. Love did often do funny things sometimes and he didn't think you could help who you loved anyway. But his eyes snapped up to hers as she mentioned her mother. "Oh.. yeah.. no.. I didn't mean it like that.." he stammered a bit, feeling bad for his previous comment. He didn't mean any disrespect or ill-will towards her mother at all. And he certainly didn't mean that he thought she was ever a bad person. "I just don't know this Gabby at all and if she was part of the family by choice, it seemed to stand to reason that she was a willing participant in what went on with them.." Yeah, maybe he should just shut up now.

"Oh, that would be nice," he said, rubbing her back lightly as she leaned her head on his shoulder. "I'm sure it will be good to catch up." Or he hoped. He hoped that it wouldn't bring back bad memories or make anyone sad again.

She knew her mother in law wouldn't mind, she just hated to put the kids on her for longer than she had to. Chloe had always been a handful and now putting Morgan in the mix she tried to be home as much as possible. He was a good baby, but three was just a bit much for most people, though Minerva loved it and wouldn't change it for anything.

She knew he didn't and gave his hand a squeeze to let him know she knew he wasn't trying to say anything against her mother. "Gabby came into the picture while I was living there. They didn't date that long before they were getting married. I thought it was all kind of fast and that she wouldn't be around long, but I guess I was wrong." She was happy for them, because if two people loved each other than great, she was glad it worked out, but she still didn't trust Edward. "Leelee constantly tried to curse her. It wasn't until she was pregnant that Leelee backed off. " She couldn't help but wonder if Gabby was relieved that Leelee was gone.

Yes, catching up would be good and she'd probably get Ariana to go as well.

Once Gretchen flew off, he turned back to Minerva. He figured his mother would send something right back, but it might be a few minutes anyway and he needed to be supportive for his wife right now. Listening as she explained the situation a little better, he nodded here and there.

"Hmm. Maybe she saw something that others didn't." Or love was blind. Or there was something going on with her that Minerva didn't see. But Ethan didn't want to say anymore about it. He didn't really know as much about the situation and already felt like he put his foot in his mouth. So maybe it was best to just leave it be. But for now, he was still very opposed with any sort of reunion.

"Why don't I get dinner started." He gave her a squeeze as he pulled her closer against him and kissed the top of her head. He was sure that she was emotionally drained so she could just relax. He'd get dinner going, then they could get the kids.

She watched one of her favorite owls come towards them and Liesel follow behind. Patting her owl on the head since she wasn't going for the trip, Minerva watched Ethan tie a note to Gretchen.

Getting up she moved to the sing and placed her glass into it. "Maybe, I don't know. I just remember her being nice. Still a muggle snob, but nicer than the other two." Though Edward was better than Leelee. It didn't really matter though, really. SHe was not wanting to think about it anymore at this point. "I'll owl him about sending the stuff to the German ministry." She didn't know what the excuse was as to why, but she'd figure it out later.

She had just sat down again when he pulled her closer and kissed her head. "I love you." She was not going to pull their life into that mess again. He had been dealt enough with her while they were in school. The Mungos trip would have been enough to send any boy running, but her husband had stuck by her and for that she would make sure this wouldn't disrupt their lives.

Kissing his cheek she stood again. "I'm going to go lay down a bit before the kids come home." She needed to get herself together and regain some energy.

It was very early and Chloe jolted from upright in her bed. Her sleepy eyes looked around to see what had woke her, but there was nothing in the room. Hearing a noise again she got out of bed and walked into the living room. With a rub of her eyes she noticed Oggy chasing Elise around the living room. Giggles left her sleepy throat and soon she was wanting involved in the chase.

She took off towards Oggy and he barked happily as she did. Running around the coffee table and then the couch after her pets.

Morgan suddenly startled awake. For one, he had a very full diaper, and two, he could hear noises from the other room. Noises that sounded like they were having fun, and he was missing out! Was it brother and sister? Morgan needed to go see.

Piling up a couple of his stuffed animals near the bars of his crib, he stepped up on them and climbed out, landing on his bottom. Recovering quickly, he got up and toddled out of his room, unaware that Gunnar was still in his bed. He needed to go investigate the sounds.

Wandering into the living room, he saw Chloe chasing Oggy and Elise around the furniture. He erupted in baby giggles as he clapped his little hands together, watching for a moment before following his big sister.

She was still running around chasing the dog. Elise seemed to have gotten bored but Oggy did not. He was barking and running and soon Chloe realized someone else was with them. She stopped and looked at Morgan. "How did you get out?" She thought maybe she should tell mommy, but he was allowed to play if he got out.

She giggled, "Come Morgan." Grabbing his little hand she started going, but slower for him. She knew he wasn't as fast as her. No one was, she was the fastest in the house. Take that Gunnar!

Morgan almost bumped into Chloe as she stopped too suddenly for him and it took him a couple extra steps to stop too. He gave her a really proud grin and pointed a chubby finger down the hall where his bedroom was located. He didn't talk, he didn't even try, because big brother and big sister always just knew what he wanted.

He grinned even wider when she took his hand to lead him, and he toddled as fast as his little legs would carry him. He ran after Oggy, giggling as he barked and ran away from them. What a funny doggy! He stumbled once as his feet got tangled up with each other, but he quickly got up again to resume the chase. This was fun!

Chloe was running with Morgan until he tripped and she watched with a frown. "Poor baby" Chloe the dramatic she was put her arms around him and cuddled him as he seemed fully fine. "Did you fall down and go boom?" Though she was saying this Morgan seemed to be gone again. Soon Chloe was laughing and running too.

Though she was having fun she stopped and looked around. "I'm hungry Morgan. I think we should make breakfast." She watched mommy do it enough she could get on the counter and get bread and jam or even cereal.

OOOOH YES!

"We get the chocolate kind mommy only gives sometimes." She ran into the kitchen and grabbed a chair. Pulling it to the counter she climbed up on the counter and grabbed the box. "You hungry baby?"

Morgan was happy to have sister hugs and cuddles to make him feel better, and he put his arms around her too when she hugged him. But there was also an Oggy that needed chased and he was soon after him again with big sister, laughing and having fun.

When Chloe stopped, he did too and he stared at her with his big eyes. Breakfast, yes, he was hungry, and he whined a little, wanting her to get him something to eat.

Morgan toddled after her as she went into the kitchen. Ohh.. what was she doing on the counter? He could get up there too! It took him a minute, but he wrangled his body up onto the chair. Holding onto the back of it, he looked up at his sister on the counter. Oh the chocolate cereal!! Making an urgent baby grunting sound, he reeeaaached his hand at the cereal. Yes, he wanted that one!

She had the box of cereal now and watched as Morgan was climbing the chair. "No, no that is dangeous Morgy.. I climb because I'm bigger." Opening up the box she looked around for the bowls. She opened the cabinet and pulled out the bowls, as she opened the box Chloe dropped it and dumped it all over the counter and floor. "Whoops" Her giggling grew as she saw Oggy run into the kitchen and start eating.

"Get the cereal Morgy before Oggy!!"

Jumping from the counter she landed hard on the floor, "Ouch" As she got up and rubbed her butt she tried to shoo Oggy away so they could eat the cereal too.

Floor cereal was yummier then bowl cereal anyways.

Morgan paused in his climbing when Chloe told him no, and he stared at her with a questioning look. But he wanted to climb up there. He wanted to be like big sister. He could be big too!

Oh, whoops! Morgan soon turned his attention from sister to the cereal as it fell all over the floor. And there was Oggy! The one year old giggled like crazy when the dog started eating the cereal off the floor. What a funny dog!

He wriggled his little toddler body down from the chair when Chloe told him to get the cereal, and he crawled over to the fallen cereal and began stuffing it in his mouth from the floor. Yummy! He liked the chocolate kind best.

His eyes snapped to Chloe when she jumped and fell down. Was Sissy hurt? He crawled over to her and put his arms around her to give a hug, because he knew you were supposed to give cuddles when people got hurt. That would make her feel better!

Oggy jumped towards them and started gobbling cereal as well. "No, Oggy not your food." A crash from the bowls made her jump and she looked around confused for a second.

Looking at Morgan she giggled, "I did that, I'm magic like mommy and daddy." A puff of her chest showed she was proud of herself even if she didn't mean to do it or even knew she was doing it.

Magic was fun!

"Morgy we should put cereal in the bowls before mommy or daddy comes out."

Look, the bowls were flying! Morgan looked up from eating the cereal on the floor to watch the bowls before the fell to the floor with a clatter. He squealed and giggled as Chloe told him she did it, and he sat up and clapped his hands. That was neat!

He blinked at her when she said something about cleaning up the cereal and he shoved another handful in his mouth. He guessed she could put it in the bowls if she wanted but he was okay sitting right here and eating it. He reached over to grab another handful and saw Oggy trying to gobble up the cereal faster, causing Morgan to erupt in giggles again. That crunch, crunch, crunch sound was so funny!

HE WASN'T LISTENING TO HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She stood up and tapped her foot all grown up like. "MORGAN MCCARTHY you pick up that cereal right now or you are in big trouble mister!" Pointing her little finger at him she huffed as Oggy was eating too. Then she started to giggle and plopped down on the floor again.

"You know what, floor cereal is the best." With that she dumped more on the floor for them.

Minerva heard the noise and she nudged Ethan with her foot, but decided to just get up anyway. The bed was comfy, but she knew the kids would never sleep in. Most likely it was Gunnar or Chloe since Morgan was safely in his crib.

As she turned the corner and saw the mess and the children on the floor she just stared for a moment. "What on earth is going on here?"

Morgan paused while in the process of shoving more cereal in his mouth to stare at Chloe as she yelled and pointed her finger at him. He was surprised at the sudden loudness of her voice, but she looked and sounded so funny like that, that he began laughing. And he laughed some more when she sat down and laughed too. This was fun!

Oh, more cereal! Morgan sat up and clapped his hands with delight as big sister dumped more cereal on the floor. With a big grin, he reached for more, looking up only when he heard Mommy's voice.

He stared at her a minute with big eyes, then scrambled to his feet and toddled over to her. Morgan tugged on her pants leg, then reached his arms to her. He wanted up!

Ethan was dead tired. He had had such a long day at work the day before that he wasn't in any type of hurry to get up and out of bed. He didn't really hear any kind of commotion either. It was just one of those noises that tends to incorporate itself into one's dream and he didn't pay much attention to it anyway. So when his wife nudged him with her foot, he simply turned over. He'd get up soon enough. It was the weekend.

This was super fun and she decided right there that Morgan and her were going to have floor cereal more often. She jammed more in her mouth and wondered where Gunnar was. He was missing the fun. What a sleepy head, didn't he know it was morning.

Her eyes lifted when she heard her mother's voice and watched Morgan hurry over, 'Traitor" Look at him running for safety the minute she had come into the room. Leaving Chloe to seem like it was all her.

Well HUMPH!

"We made you breakfast mommy. Look!" Sweet and innocent was the way to go, it always worked!

Minerva was still just staring. She couldn't believe how much cereal was on the floor. How did these kids make such a mess. "Chloe how did you even get this?" She glanced at the chair and just shook her head. The child never had any fear. She had to have climbed the counter.

'That's very nice of both of you, but next time just wake mommy to help." So she didn't have to clean it up. "And you young man, how did you get out of your crib?" Picking up Morgan she tickled his tummy.

Morgan smiled at Mommy as Chloe told her all about breakfast and he reached his hands up to her. He wasn't really paying much attention to Chloe anymore, at least not right now, and he certainly didn't know what the word traitor meant even if he had been paying enough attention to hear it. Nope he was just happy to be in Mommy's arms and he let out a few giggles when she tickled his tummy.

After all that dry chocolatey cereal, Morgan was thirsty. Chloe hadn't gotten him any juice, but he was sure Mommy would. He reached over her shoulder to point at the refrigerator. "...eh... eh.." He could probably ask for juice if he really wanted, but everyone always just knew what he wanted and got it for him, so he didn't need to try.

Did that mean she was off the hook? Mommy didn't seem that mad. "I got it by climbing the chair, but I got the bowls with my magic, just like you." Okay so maybe she wasn't trying to get the bowls they just flew to them, but still it was magic and she could pretend to do it on purpose.

Oh look Morgan needed something to drink. She could do that. "I'll get him juice mommy. That's what he wants. I speak Morgan." She took off to the fridge and opened it up. Pulling out the juice for both of them. "Here you go Morgie. I get your juice." She jumped back on the chair to grab a sippy cup.

"CHLOE MARIE" She was not getting back up on that chair. This girl was going to be the death of Minerva. Where did she even get this spunk from? "I'll get the cups. You have helped enough. Please put Oggy outside so he doesn't get sick on the chocolate." She walked over to the cabinet and grabbed the sipping cup with her free hand.

Pouring the juice she handed it to Morgan. "You know young man you will have to use your words soon. We aren't going to listen to grunts and whines forever." She knew he'd be fine though. There didn't seem to be anything to worry about so she just let it slide. She handed him his sipping cup and set him down on the floor again. "Mommy needs to clean up this mess and then make breakfast for Gunnar and daddy. What do you think Cereal for them too?"

Yes, he wanted juice! Morgan craned his neck to see over Mommy's shoulder, watching as Chloe went to the refrigerator. He bounced in her arms a bit, kicking his legs, and let out a delighted squeal as he saw his sister pull out the bottle of juice. He was rather excited for his juice until he heard Mommy's LOUD voice, startling him as he snapped his wide eyes to her.

But that didn't last long because he soon had his juice, and he eagerly sucked it down from his sippy cup as he was placed on the floor. Yes, cereal would be good for everybody, he thought, but he showed no sign of response other than turning his big green eyes to Mommy again as she mentioned it. And then he pointed to the doorway at Daddy as he then appeared there.

Uh oh. Ethan knew it was highly unlikely that he'd get much chance to sleep in on the weekend when they had three children under the age of ten. He had hoped for a little more shut eye, but when he heard his daughter's name yelled from the other room, he knew it was time that he got up. Stopping in the doorway of the kitchen, Ethan poked his head in and just stared at the mess a moment before laughing a little. With as crazy as his kids could make him, he knew he had to keep his sense of humor or else lose his sanity. "Looks like someone was busy this morning."

YAWN.

Gunnar had been awfully tired and it appeared that he slept through all the excitement, unbeknownst to him. He heard some sort of commotion coming from the other room which brought him out of a deep sleep.
