I Don’t Know Anything

10 years old, first year at Merlin’s Acadamy of Magic

This was crazy; so many kids in one place. They were all magical, too! Dallin was feeling quite overwhelmed. Where had his sisters gone?
“My dad’s a wizard, mom’s a muggle,” Dallin heard one girl announce as the crowd of eleven-year-olds stopped outside two big double doors. “Known I was a witch for years!”
“My parents are both wizards,” a boy said proudly. “I’m a pureblood. I already know all about magic.” He turned to Dallin, a funny look on his face. “What about you?”
Dallin, thinking honesty might be the best policy here, answered, “Well… I don’t know anything.”

Who Would Even Want to Do That?

11 years old, first year at Merlin’s

This was horrifying. Why did they even need to learn this? This wasn’t even part of Defensive magic! This was… torture.
Squirming a bit in his seat, Dallin stared down at his desk so that he wouldn’t have to look at the pictures of snakes as the teacher talked about them. He was actually talking about talking to them. It was called Parseltongue. The concept gave Dallin the creeps. People could actually talk to snakes?
If that was what wizards did for fun, Dallin thought that maybe he should give up this whole wizard thing and be a muggle again.

You’re Supposed to Talk to Them?

It’s hard to be the cutest one at school. Dallin had to learn this the hard way when he got his first girlfriend. What were you supposed to do with a girlfriend? Well… Dallin decided that he knew exactly what to do. He ignored her. He did it surprisingly well, too. During the entire two weeks of being Becca’s boyfriend he didn’t say more than five words to her. “Can I borrow your eraser?”
It wasn’t until a few months later that his sisters told him why little Becca had ended the relationship.
“What, you’re supposed to talk to her?!”

The Other Owls Will Make Fun of Him
– 27. Owl –
12 years old, second year at Merlin’s

“He’s yours, Dally,” Kinzie said with a bright, ecstatic smile as she handed the owl cage to her little brother. “Your own pet owl!”
Dallin beamed. His own pet screech owl. “I’m naming him Screech!” he declared, reaching a finger through the cage to stroke the owl.
Hannah and Kinzie exchanged a look. Hannah spoke up in a stern voice. “His name’s not Screech. His name is Bartholomew Jackson the First.”
“Bartholo – what kind of name is that?!”
“It’s sophisticated.”
“Fine. But I’m calling him Barty.” With that, Dallin picked up the poor bird and took him to his room.

I Need That Tooth!
– 88. Sweet Tooth –
6 years old

“Will you pull it, please?” Dallin stood in front of his mom, wiggling one of his front teeth with his tongue.
Natalie looked at the tooth for a moment before turning her gaze to her son’s eyes. “What if that’s your sweet tooth?”
The boy’s blue eyes widened. “My sweet tooth?”
“That’s the one that gets candy and ice cream. Is that one it?”
Dallin didn’t know if it was indeed his sweet tooth, but he didn’t want to take the chance. He backed away from his mom quickly, determined to keep his teeth in his mouth where they belonged.

A Love Potion Might Work
– 62. Amortentia –
17 years old, sixth year at Hogwarts

“A love potion?!” Dallin was… angry, to say the least. He stared at Louisa, slowly scooting back on the bench so that she wouldn’t see that he was moving away from her. “Why would you use a love potion on me?!”
Louisa looked distraught. Dallin could see tears form in her eyes. He didn’t want her to cry, but he needed to know why she did something like that to him.
“I wanted to punish you.” The girl’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Punish me? What did I even do?!”
“You didn’t like me back.”
That shut Dallin up quickly.

That Wasn’t Supposed To Happen
– 61. Kiss –
16 years old, fifth year at Hogwarts

This was a little strange, to be honest. Ellie was an extremely pretty girl, and she was flirting with him. That much was obvious. He opened his mouth to say something, but was distracted as she reached across to pick something off his chest. For the second time that day.
A few more minutes of talking, and they were even closer. As Dallin watched, Ellie looked at his lips. He looked at hers. They seemed… soft?
Another few seconds passed. Then Dallin closed the distance between him and Ellie. He kissed her.
And, to his surprise, she kissed him back.

Craving Chocolate Milk
– 92. Chocolate –
22 years old

“Dallin! Dalliiiin!”
Dallin sighed, hurrying to the kitchen where his pregnant wife was sitting at the dining table. “Yes?”
“Where’s our chocolate milk?”
Dallin stared at her. “Chocolate milk? Why?”
“I want some.”
Oh. A craving. Dallin held back laughter. Since Ellie had been pregnant she’d wanted so many things at odd times… ice cream, potatoes, pickles… and now chocolate milk.
“We don’t have any, babe,” he told her as he looked around the kitchen, then back to her with an apologetic smile. Her bottom lip quivered a little and her voice came out quiet.
“Will you get me some?”
