Default Guidelines & Canon

Hey, friends! This RPG forum is intended as a sort of virtual playground - there are lots of places to RP and explore, but there isn't the same structured game play as in the Wizarding World RP areas (Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and the MoM). We want you to have LOADS of fun here, so suggestions and questions are always welcome. If you see something we can make better, PM one of the St. Mungo's mods. Just to help facilitate your play, we want to provide some general guidelines and work together to develop an SS canon. To see Exam information, skip to here.

How many characters can I play in this forum?
You can play as many characters as you can successfully manage. We suggest starting with one or two.
I want to enroll my student, what year is it and how old should they be to enroll?
Students enrolled must be at least 11 years of age before the start of their first-year school term (September 1st) and typically graduate after seven years of study the year they turn 18 or 19. Less if they're a transfer student. It is okay if the student is older than their peers since some start school late, have to repeat a year, etc. Below is a guideline for you to help your biography information post. Students with their birth year too young will automatically have it raised up.

Below is the adjusted birthday range per school year and is updated accordingly to the current school year: 2114-2115.
Quote:
Class of 2121: Sixth Grade
January 1st - August 31st 2103 or September 1st - December 31st 2102
Class of 2120: Seventh Grade
January 1st - August 31st 2102 or September 1st - December 31st 2101
Class of 2119: Eighth Grade
January 1st - August 31st 2101 or September 1st - December 31st 2100
Class of 2118: Ninth Grade aka Freshmen
January 1st - August 31st 2100 or September 1st - December 31st 2099
Class of 2117: Tenth Years aka Sophmores
January 1st - August 31st 2099 or September 1st - December 31st 2098
Class of 2116: Eleventh Years aka Juniors
January 1st - August 31st 2098 or September 1st - December 31st 2097
Class of 2115: Twelfth Years aka Seniors
January 1st - August 31st 2097 or September 1st - December 31st 2096
Is there an Elementary / Primary school before Ilvermorny?
There isn't an official school listed canon-wise. For SS canon, however, the American Primary Wizarding School is the Salem Academy of Magic that holds students in Pre-K through Fifth grade.
Who is playing the professors?
All professors, except those established by SS canon in the Wizarding World RPG plots, will be NPC (non-played characters). We'll provide names and short bios so everyone has a similar point of reference.
Is there a groundskeeper or caretaker at Ilvermorny?
No, there is no groundskeeper or caretaker at the school. A group of Pukwudgies continue to reside at the school. These Pukwudgies provide security and maintenance at the school in addition to cooking the daily meals.
What about housepoints?
Nope. Not here!
Why aren't there any classroom threads?
Because MOST of the RP in classroom threads is the actual class, we didn't include these types of threads as actual lessons will not be played out here like they are in the Hogwarts RPG. There are a few exceptions based on areas at Hogwarts that are popular for RPing... the Potions Hut for lab work, the Conservatory for planting and gardening, and the Barns for interacting with animals. If you think there are other classrooms that you'd enjoy for RPing, let one of the St. Mungo's mods know.
Are there prefects/HBs/HGs at Ilvermorny?
Yes, though the selection process is a little different than Hogwarts. Prefects are Junior/Senior students consisting of two students per year and house (gender does not matter -- there can be 1 boy and 1 girl per house or 2 girls or 2 boys; it all depends on student votes), resulting in a grand total of 24 prefects. 2 prefects that are in their final year serve as Head Prefects; the prefect with the most votes serves a 'President' role, whereas the runner-up serves a 'Vice President' role. Prefects are elected the year before by the peers in their own year, following a good-natured election campaign. We are not filling the prefect/HB/HG positions at this time.
Do students from Hogwarts and students from Ilvermorny use the same currency?
No, they do not. In the United Kingdom, wizardfolk use Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts. In America, however, the currency is the Dragot and the Sprink.

Examinations

What year do students from Ilvermorny take their exams? Are they similar to OWLs/NEWTs? Or something different entirely?
Ilvermorny students do NOT take the OWLs/NEWTs that students at Hogwarts do. They have their own equivalent, as many other wizarding schools do (such as Beauxbatons). Students of Ilvermorny take the JARVEY tests (Juxtaposed Assessments for Reviewing Versatile Experienced Youth) during eleventh grade (sixth year Hogwarts equivalent). This is a play on the American ACT/SAT standardized tests that are typically taken junior year of high school, similar to how the OWLs and NEWTs are a play on Britain's GCSE and A-Levels. Just like in America, they can retake the examinations into their senior year (seventh year Hogwarts equivalent) as revisions. Most students enter their senior year to achieve the best grades and improve their career possibilities.

Text Cut: How JARVEY Scoring Works
For the sake of simplicity (because actual ACT scoring is #cray), the JARVEY exam for each subject is measured on a scale of 0 to 36 (0 meaning you earned 0%; 36 meaning you earned 100%). Below is a conversion of the JARVEY scoring:
36 = 100%
35 = 97%
34 = 94%
33 = 92%
32 = 89%
31 = 86%
30 = 83%
29 = 81%
28 = 78%
27 = 75%
26 = 72%
25 = 70%
24 = 67%
23 = 64%
22 = 61%
------------
21 = 58%
20 = 56%
19 = 53%
18 = 50%
17 = 47%
16 = 44%
15 = 42%
14 = 39%
13 = 36%
12 = 33%
11 = 31%
10 = 28%
9 = 25%
8 = 22%
7 = 19%
6 = 17%
5 = 14%
4 = 11%
3 = 8%
2 = 6%
1 = 3%
0 = 0%

33-36 = 90-100% = Distinguished
29-32 = 80-89% = Accomplished
25-28 = 70-79% = Competent
22-24 = 60-69% = Mediocre
0-21 = 0-59% = Failure
Quodpot is supposed to be a largely American thing. Would they have House teams the way Hogwarts has Quidditch teams?
In America, Quodpot is to Quidditch as American Football is to Footbal (Soccer). Quodpot and Quidditch are both played at Ilvermorny and do have House teams like Hogwarts has teams for Quidditch. There is quite a fanbase in America for Quidditch (as shown by the American National Quidditch team that plays in the Quidditch World Cup and various United States League teams scattered throughout the country: the Fitchburg Finches of Massachusetts and the Sweetwater All-Stars of Texas), but it is JKR canon for Quodpot to be the more popular of the two sports.
Extra-Curriculars

In addition to core classes and electives, Ilvermorny offers a variety of extra-curricular classes, clubs, and sports to enrich a student's education and interests. These extra-curriculars are listed here for IC purposes and to provide you with role-play inspiration and opportunity. You are welcome to reference any of them in your own role-plays within the Beauxbatons forum and create your own activities inspired by them for your Beauxbatons characters.

Though there are rumors of the anti-muggle sentiments and Neo-Alliance uprising from Europe and the UK, their influence has not yet widely reached the US, even though some no-maj discrimination is becoming more emboldened. Students at Ilvermorny may have some trouble contacting friends or pen-pals they may have at Hogwarts or other European schools. Hogwarts communication is impossible and other magical schools throughout Europe may have mail screened which might delay communication. Since the term started, Ilvermorny has been experiencing strange, localized earthquakes. While they only last moments, some of them have been known to open up small rifts in the grounds. The staff has been so far able to contain and close them, though they are still trying to determine what is causing them and they warn students to be on alert so as not to fall in.
