▸ BACKGROUND

The Alden and Cartier families taking root in North America started as a seed with two adventurous No-Maj men. John Alden arrived by means of the Mayflower from Harwich, Essex, England, in the early 1600s to be the copper for the voyage. Within a matter of years Alden became a rather prominent member of Plymouth Colony and later founded the town of Duxbury. Over half a century earlier, Jacques Cartier navigated and explored Canada for the French. Three voyages, leading him to the discovery of areas comprising the Canadian Atlantic provinces and the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Montreal, over the span of eight years built quite a legacy for himself. Their descendant, being the kid that he is, is totally oblivious to the successes of his forefathers.

On the final day of August after three years of being husband and wife, No-Maj parents Matthew, an American wildlife biologist from Springfield, and Renée, a nurse from Québec, couldn't have been prouder of the life they had brought into the world. Even though he was small in comparison to the other newborns, Benjamin had the biggest baby cheeks that were just too irresistible to not squish. Thus the nickname Pudge was lovingly coined.

The nickname was not outgrown, for the boy, as the years went by, always had a bit of a belly on him due to having a stomach that could never be fully satisfied. Anything Benjamin could get his hands on -- soft or hard, sweet or sour -- would immediately go into his mouth before anyone could snatch whatever it was he had grabbed from his little fingers. It was his love of food, however, that, with help from the family babysitter, instilled in him an early passion: cooking and baking. It started off small with toast, sausages, and pancakes dowsed with gallons of maple syrup, but by the age of seven he could surprisingly make just about anything without (much) supervision. His little sister's personal favourites are his poutine and Nanaimo bars.

It was discovered one day when Benjamin, at the age of nine, was running a plate of fresh bars up to his sister when the first inkling of magic snuck into his life. Tripping over the family dog, the curly-haired boy fell down to the ground; however, the plate remained hovering mid-air. At first, Benjamin was shocked by this, but shrugged it off and went about his business -- his mind was either playing tricks on him or he secretly had Jedi powers. Needless to say, other minor magical mishaps crept up from time to time though no one was around to witness them and Benjamin could not make his 'Jedi powers' come to life on the spot. But one day, months before Benjamin's eleventh birthday, the crazy neighbour lady saw vegetables from the garden casually levitating in the air and following the boy inside. Later that evening, a man came knocking on the door and revealed to them that Benjamin was a wizard and had a place at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Massachusetts.

Since that day, Benjamin has been blown away by the magical world. Though slightly disappointed that he wasn't a Jedi, he nonetheless found being a wizard equally as cool. The first month at Ilvermorny is something that he will never forget in addition to the lessons that were taught there and the magic he learned. To add to the amazement, he quickly learned that there were other wizarding schools in the world when he and his fellow classmates were whisked off across the Atlantic for the International Magical Pupil Standoff hosted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His own school took the win in the end and he made a number of friends, to whom he has been religiously writing every week since returning to North America.

Now another year wiser and another inch taller, Benjamin is ready for his second year at Ilvermorny. Even though he didn't do so well in his studies the previous year (how can anyone remember all of that mumbo jumbo anyway?), it is his goal to at least be able to master the basic cooking spells so he can bribe his professors with delicious food in exchange for passing grades. He also wants to domesticate a mooncalf and ride it around the school. Wish him luck!

▸ BACKGROUND

This Americanized branch of Kowalski began when the parents of Jacob Kowalski immigrated from Poland to New York in the early 1900's. From there young Jacob grew and served in the military, worked in a canning factory, and started his own bakery. The descendants of Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein, however, remember their ancestors most for their involvement and friendship with magizoologist Newton Scamander and thusly overshadowing the fact that they are also related to well-respected American chaser Quentin Kowalski. Though their ancestors are no more and the family hasn't lived in New York for years, the present-day members of the Kowalski family still talk of these thrilling happenstances and the unforgettable love story that stemmed from it.

On the hottest day in July, Leonard and Deborah Kowalski, newly wed and young, brought into the loud, bustling Chicago streets their firstborn son. While they did not have much and lived in a rather shabby apartment, the two were nonetheless the greatest parents Dillion could ever wish for. Isaac was the stereotypical father, being the breadwinner of the family as an Auror (albeit low in ranking), whereas Deborah gave up Healing to be a stay-at-home mother.

For the most part, Dillon was your average kid. He was talkative, enjoyed playing with others his age, and developed a fascination with planets, stars, and aliens. Even when his younger brother Lukas was born years later, he was very enthusiastic because that meant he had someone to explore 'space' in his 'rocketship' -- a large blanket fort set up in their tiny living room -- with every day until it was time to go to sleep (after first naming the glow-in-the-dark dots on the ceiling with the corresponding planets and stars he knew).

The day his first signs of magic was shown was the day that his father was asked, after many idle years of paperwork, to work undercover for a case. Dillon managed to defy all that he knew about gravity, causing everything -- including Lukas and his mother -- in the house to levitate up to the ceiling. It was an exciting day for all of the Kowalskis. Little did Dillon and his family know that the undercover mission his father was on would go horribly wrong, causing the man to meet an early demise and thus changing the family dynamic forever.

Dillion, since that day, completely immersed himself into his books about astronomy, quickly detaching himself from the friends he had made in elementary school and no longer having much to say to anyone. Those surrounding him changed as well. Lukas no longer thought of his brother as cool and went off to do his own thing. His mother, on the other hand, became obsessive over the boys' whereabouts and became overly protective about everything, even while maintaining two different jobs to keep everything afloat and put food on the table. Needless to say, Dillon's daily trips to the Adler Planetarium made her worried sick when he didn't arrive home from school on time with Lukas and showed up hours later at around suppertime.

Before turning eleven, Dillon desperately wanted to attend the International Wizarding Space Academy over Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He pleads with his mother time and time again to let him attend, but she continues to say no because she cannot stand the idea of her precious baby being so far from home. "Massachusetts," she says, "is far enough as it is" and that Ilvermorny would be good for improving his social skills. So here he is, excelling in Astronomy though failing miserably at not being awkward.

This is no different for David, who was placed in Thunderbird like so many in his family. He has always been rather popular because of his namesake, though his charming demeanour and ability to perform well when it came to athletics probably had quite a bit of influence with that as well. He is a typical jock, though is grounded enough to do well in school (by any means necessary) and be kind to others (for the most part). An outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, it is likely that he can be found on the grounds at the climbing wall or playing Quadpot.

Background: Early on in his childhood, Jordan witnessed a number of arguments between his wizard father and No-Maj mother. It goes without saying that their inevitable divorce and the wordless departure of his father had a significant impact on him as he went down, as some would say, a rough path. Feelings of anger, betrayal, and shame followed him throughout his youth, which led to poor grades and often getting into trouble for one reason or another in elementary school. That streak remained when he came to Ilvermorny. Even so, the Thunderbird did show great promise in Herbalism and Potions. Despite the recognition, Jordan's interest in those particular subjects was for his own personal experimentation with different herbs and ingredients. On the surface he is outgoing, daring, and the life of the party, though deep down he is trying to outrun his inner demons.

Background: The seventh child and only son, Blaine is the last of his family to attend Ilvermorny. It was very easy for him to be overlooked while growing up in a household full of girls. Wizarding comic books kept him entertained for hours on end, and it goes without saying that this Buttersworth is very much a 'nerd' and, due to keeping to himself for the most part besides the rare moments of cuddling up with his mother, is one that lacks social skills and confidence in himself. Blaine is very much the odd one in his family, all of which chose either Thunderbird or Horned Serpent as their House meanwhile Pukwudgie was his only option. While he longs for adventure and isn't daft in the slightest, his interests and heart lie elsewhere. He just needs to get out of his shell for that to be revealed.
