Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and WizardryNestled atop Mount Greylock is the premier magical institution of North America: Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Upon opening the double doors and walking into the grand Entrance Hall, the first thing you notice is the Gordian Knot engraved in the center of the floor surrounded by four large wooden statues – the Horned Serpent, the Wampus, the Thunderbird, and the Pukwudgie. Each one is a mascot to one of the four houses.
If you are a new student, once your name is called, you will need to stand in the center of the knot. The statue that reacts is the house that has chosen you, and each statue has its own unique reaction: The crystal in the forehead of the Horned Serpent carving glows; the Wampus carving roars; the Thunderbird beats its wings; and the Pukwudgie raises its arrow.
If the rarity occurs – that two or more statues react to a student – the student is allowed to pick any one of the houses they would like to be sorted in. This does not happen often, but it is exciting when it does. Once a student is selected by their house, their next step is heading into the next room to be selected by their wand.
During the sorting ceremony, returning students are encouraged to head up the grand staircase to the glass circular balcony in order to watch the ceremony unfold and cheer for their new housemates. This staircase will also be the way to reach the higher floors.
Through another set of doors to the left, you will find the first-floor hallways, and to the right, two sets of double doors will lead you to the Dining Hall and Kitchen.

Baruch remembered going through this ceremony. He had walked up the staircase and was leaning against the nearest podium to watch the newest students below with the other older students. From what he remembered, sometimes he saw people get to choose between two houses. Not him, though, Thunderbird just called for him immediately.
Bar's eyes looked around to see if he recognized anyone he could talk with. The wait did get exhausting before the doors opened.

Karishma loathed climbing stairs. Even descending them. Okay, fine, she hated walking or running in general since she was such a klutz. Therefore, it was absolutely no surprise that at the moment she thought about her klutziness, she suddenly stumped the front of her shoe on one of the steps. “Ouch,’’ Kari muttered through clenched teeth, not because her big toe was now smarting but because she was utterly embarrassed.
For that reason, she kept her eyes downcast. It was a good thing she was quite familiar with the layout of the school, hence the dark haired girl was able to manoeuvre the rest of her way to the circular balcony. But of course the idea to keep her eyes down backfired for twice she bumped into students. Each time, she muttered a hasty apology. Then… finally she saw a spot free of feet. She slipped into it, in the process elbowing the person beside her. “Oops. Sorry!” Excuse her while she casually kept her gaze down on the new students now.

Antonio slouched casually against the balcony railing, fiddling absently with the leather band around his wrist while his dark eyes scanned the Entrance Hall below. His attention, however, snapped upward when he heard a soft 'ouch' nearby—just in time to see Karishma elbow Baruch, then hastily apologize.
Grinning, Toni pushed off the railing and ambled over to them. "You two alright over here, or are we starting a Quodpot match without telling me?" He nudged Baruch lightly with his elbow. "Don't worry, Kari. No one tumbled off the balcony. No harm, no foul," he jested as he turned to give Karishma an easy smile, tilting his head slightly.
"Gotta admit though," he added, voice softening as he gestured to the room below, "seeing the new kids standing there... makes you remember how crazy it all felt, right?"
Amaris leaned against one of the stone columns bordering the balcony, arms crossed tightly over her chest, dark curls spilling freely over her shoulders. She was watching everything—the nervous glances, the stiff postures, the barely-suppressed excitement of the new students—without participating. Yet her sharp eyes caught everything, especially Karishma's clumsy collision with Baruch.
A smirk tugged at her mouth, more amused than concerned. Might need the Healer stationed nearby at this rate, she mused.
Her attention soon shifted back to the floor below, already bored with the sitaution before her. Her eyes locked on the the scene below, wondering if this year if multiple statues would claim anyone. That would certainly make the evening a little more interesting.
Santiago stood not far from the top of the staircase, arms folded comfortably over his chest, surveying the ceremony with a soft, knowing smile. His weathered face, lined from years of wind and sun, bore the kind of calm patience only a lifetime of working with magical creatures could teach.
He noticed the small gathering of older students nearby: two others and his nephew all forming a cluster. His eyes crinkled kindly as he glanced at girl in particular, having caught her earlier stumble. He approached at an easy pace, boots making weighty thuds against the stone floor.
"Easy there, muchachos," the professor said, his voice carrying the warm lilt of the South. "The new kids'll bring enough chaos without y'all adding to it." His gaze held no mockery, only a spark of easy humor—especially knowing one of those sixth-grade students down there was his own daughter.

Another year, another sorting. Predictable, but there was a little bit of excitement too in the unpredictableness of how many new students would be put into each house. Cliff liked to privately guess, even if he was wrong. Being correct wasn't the point. Because either way, predictable or not, he was glad to be here. Glad that he could be away from home for several months. It was better that way.
Arms loosely crossed, he stood near Amaris, and he, too, noticed the brief collision of Karishma and Baruch nearby, and Antonio joining them, though without colliding with either of them.
"What're the chances someone falls off?" he wondered aloud but low enough that only someone close by, like Amaris, likely heard him. Now that would be a dramatic way to start off the year. Not that he wanted anyone to get hurt - but it was probable, if not guaranteed, that there were cushioning charms in place, so that seemed unlikely. And there was a new professor wandering right over there too, so double the chances of protection.

"Oh!" Bar's sight was interrupted by a collision to his nose, but it could've been worse. Imagine if such a collision earned him the first to nose dive into a crowd of sixth graders, such an extravagant show by him would have to wait another day. "Nothing to worry about it." He rubbed his nose, no blood or guts spilled here, just a little soreness that'll fade.
"Oh hey Toni, you just nearly witnessed me make a sick dive into the sorting below." So this taller beauty's name was Karishma. "Nice to meet ya, by the way." He offered a hand to her to shake. While they reminisced on their past sorting. "It sure doesn't feel that long ago, don't they look smaller than what we used to be?" Cliff was also joining them along with a slightly younger girl he didn't know as well. "I heard someone charmed a stream of water on them before our time here."
What a return for Abel as he remembered this exact area. Such fond memories with him and his wife in their younger years. Now they had kids of their own, though too young to attend just yet. But the school where he caused trouble was now the school he worked at and tasked with preventing others from causing trouble. What a full circle moment. The Professor was near enough to maintain sight of the older students. This was one of the better places to get a view of the ceremony below. Santiago already was on some of them.
Within earshot Forsfelle heard the question, Chances of someone falling off? "Very little with these enhancements in place." He knew someone who tried to test that. He'd rather not be the killjoy, but students deserved the truth.

Kari lifted her gaze finally {though she missed the kind look Professor Santigo sent her} to glare at Antonio first then at Baruch, whom she didn’t recall having spoken to despite being aware of the fact that they were in the same year. The glaring happened because it sounded as though Toni was making fun of her, and he was dragging Baruch into doing the same. She tossed her long hair over her shoulder, some amount of sass in the action. Apologies to anyone whom it might have whipped! “Clearly no one did,’’ she remarked. “There’s no blood or gore, is there?” Which was kind of a disappointment. Karishma did like the occasional morbidness. “We could have some Quodpot fun tomorrow though, and see if anyone takes a tumble from their broom.” She threw Toni a ‘sweet’ smile then turned her attention to Baruch and his extended hand.
“After three years, yes,’’ she told him. Kari’s grip was a strong one, her confidence in her physical strength often making up for her shame in being a klutz. “Nice to meet you too. And I’m sorry…” She gestured at his nose before her gaze found his hair. Something she would not be telling him was that she had spent all the years silently admiring those curly brown locks. Karishma sort of reluctantly tore her gaze from him as she noted that Amaris and Cliff were there at the gathering. Thankfully they weren’t close enough for her to elbow them accidentally. Fortunately. But yes… Healer being around certainly would be helpful. Perhaps one should permanently follow her around.
Kari peered at the newbs again. “I agree with them being a lot smaller than we were.” Then again, she had always been taller than most students her age. “It was kind of nerve wracking being down there, everyone’s eyes on us.”
Cody had been observing everyone and everything, the new students, the collision of an elbow with a nose, snatches of conversation amidst the chaos, Santiago and Abel interacting with the students… all the things. For now, he stood by himself, quite content in just being invisible.
The sorting ceremony was proceeding as usual. Once the final new student’s name was called and one of the totems reacted, the ceremony was complete. It was now time for all students to gather in the dining hall for the feast.
But as everyone moved in that direction, the totems reacted simultaneously. The Wampus totem suddenly roared; the Thunderbird flapped its wings; the Horned Serpent’s crystal lit up; and the Pukwudgie pointed its arrow to the sky.
And then gobstones came flying out of the open mouths of the statues. The little round balls spewed out a rancid-smelling liquid on impact.

Bar couldn't help but admire her beauty, not just from her looks but that air of confidence. It was hot, seeing it in action. But Bar wasn't here drooling, he smirked at her agreeing about the height difference. "You were nervous then?" He asked. "Well, I'll admit to be nervous too. I wonder if they're thinking about those statues attacking them." It was a plausible thought.
Attacking them turned out to be one vision that he didn't expect to come true. But in the form of marbles.. no, gobstones that immediately started spraying all over them. "Gross." Bar backed away from the balcony fence right before it was coated in goo.
Abel's arms were crossed as he watched the students below in between keeping an eye on the older students. This was the prime moment for any sort of prank... and the sight didn't disappointment. It actually impressed him, briefly, before he realized that he now had to break things up with the other Professors.
Lazily, he flicked his wand to create a barrier over the fence before anymore gobstone goo ruined the student's outsides. The first years though, sorry, they would be taken care of as soon as they reached the ground floor. "Settle down, everyone. Stand against the wall until the coast is clear." He'll be more than happy to help clean the mess, as soon as the problem was taken care of. For now, he had to make sure it was not one of the students by the balcony who caused this.
