Chapter 30 part 2

Albus threw the paper back on the table irritated.
“You’re all brainless, that’s what you are”, he said with his eyes still fixed at the picture of his father on the first page of Daily Prophet.
“Al?”
“I’m in the kitchen”, Albus yelled back to his brother.
James came in and Albus thought that if he hadn’t heard his voice he might not have recognized him. When their father had returned from Austria bringing James back, the boy seemed so unlike himself that Albus was scared for him but now it was ten times worse. His eyes were blood shot and with black bags under them and the air of confidence and pride he had, was all gone. The black clothes he wore were only making the paleness of his face seem worse.
“James…” Albus whispered looking at him concerned. “When was the last time you ate?”
The boy either ignored him or wasn’t paying any attention and didn’t hear him.
“Al, you need to get…” he stopped looking down at the newspaper on the counter. “Throw that in the thrash”, he said with a weary voice.
Albus raised his head and looked at him startled. Could it be? Had James finally believed him?
“Why…?”
“We can’t have mum seeing it”, he said then and Albus exhaled frustrated. Of course he hadn’t believed him. Nobody believed him; but he knew he was right. He knew it no matter what everybody else said. “You need to get changed”, James added with a hollow voice and made to walk out. Albus grabbed James’ wrist before he did though.
“James…”
But he hardly knew what to say. How could he convince him?
“Get changed, Al”, James sighed looking so drained that Albus wondered how he managed not to faint. “We can’t be late”, he added and then patted Albus on the shoulder and left the room.
Albus looked down at the paper once more and made his decision. He wasn’t going anywhere.

TWO DAYS EARLIER
It was impossible. Hermione tried every spell, every incantation she knew but she couldn’t break through Fiendfyre and get inside the shop again to help Harry find George. She and Ron were safely out but Harry and George were inside and the fire was only getting bigger and bigger as the minutes went by.
Hermione was in the verse of panic. Ron was still unconscious and there was no one else around to help her; she had already send a Patronus to the Aurors but she knew that by the time they’d get there it would be too late. Just as she started thinking she should just threw herself into the fire and then, if she survived, look for her two brothers-in-law, a loud bang on the left side of the shop made her jump.
Hermione hesitated for a moment, looking at the unconscious form of her husband, but then deciding that he would be okay for a few minutes, run to see what caused the small explosion. As she turned the corner she saw George’s broken figure lying there upon the street.
“George!” she screamed. She knelt beside him and took his pulse. He was alive. She turned to look at the shop. There was a big hole at the side of it, probably blown up by someone. “HARRY!” she yelled and for a moment she thought she saw Harry’s black hair and the shine of his glasses through the fire. But then George moaned and she turned her eyes at him and when she looked up Harry was gone. “Harry?” she repeated confused standing up, her relief vanishing.
And then the entire building started collapsing as loud explosions started breaking it down. The force of the nearest explosion threw Hermione on the air and she fell hard on the ground. The hit on her head made her faint and she stayed there unconscious.

Hermione was sitting in a chair at the hospital just outside Ron’s room. She had her head inside her hands and through her fingers she had her widened in shock eyes fixed on the floor. It was impossible. What had happened was impossible. It just couldn’t have happened because it was so impossible.
The Aurors arrived but she already knew it was too late when they did. It took them about half an hour to get Fiendfyre under control and when the fire was finally out, the entire building was wrecked and burned. Yet they searched it three times if not more. They all hoped to find something, anything that could tell them that Harry Potter had managed to get out, that Harry Potter wasn’t among the ashes. But there was nothing to find, not even a body. Harry Potter was dead, burned alive.
She kept repeating the words to herself but she still couldn’t comprehend it. How could she comprehend that Harry was dead? Harry was dead.Harry was dead. Her best friend from when she was eleven was dead. He died trying to save her and Ron and George and he did it; but he couldn’t save himself.
Hermione hadn’t even notice the tears that run down her face. Ron was still out, so he didn’t know but some of the Aurors had left almost forty five minutes before to take the news back to Ginny. Hermione knew that she should be the one to do it but she couldn’t find enough strength inside her to tell Ginny that she was never going to see her husband again. Ginny lived and breathed for Harry; Hermione knew that she wouldn't be able to handle a life without him. And what about James or Albus or Lily? What about Hope that would never know her father?
“Hermione!”
The hurried footsteps and the sound of Ginny’s voice made Hermione look up startled. Ginny and Teddy were running towards her. She got up and they stopped in front of her out of breath. Just a look in Ginny’s face made Hermione realize what was happening. Ginny hadn’t believed the aurors. She still hoped that it was all a mistake, a joke and apparently Hermione couldn’t escape the task to tell her the truth.
“Hey, Gin”, Hermione mumbled wiping the tears from her face.
“Hermione, tell me what happened”, she said with a blank face and a cold, distant voice.
“What do you know?” Hermione asked her but it was Teddy who answered.
“Two Aurors came and wanted to talk to Ginny and me”, he said. “They told us that Ron and George are hurt and that I need to get back to the hospital and…”
“They told us there was a fire”, Ginny cut across him.
“Yes, there was a fire”, Hermione nodded.
“Hermione, where’s Harry?” Ginny asked her and then looked around like expecting to see her husband appearing from some door.
Hermione took a deep breath, then sat back down into her chair and started describing to them everything that happened with a low, almost whispered voice; she was afraid that if she said it out loud it would become more real than it already was. She told them how they found Ron, what Artemis and Dolohov said, how Artemis casted Fiendfyre and how Harry told her to take Ron outside, while he stayed to look for George. Then her voice failed.
“And then?” Teddy asked with a hollow voice. Ginny didn’t have to ask. Everything she needed to know was there written on Hermione’s face. She felt like the world went cold, everything around her stopped as Hermione raised her head and looked right into her eyes. And then she said the three words the Aurors said but she didn’t believe them.
“Harry is dead”.

TWO DAYS LATER

“Lily, come on!” James yelled and then walked to the living room to find it filled with red-heads. They were all dressed in black like he was.
“Hey Nana”, James told Molly and she looked up from her handkerchief. She was crying but she managed to give him a watery smile.
“Where’s Albus and Lilly?” Ron asked him.
“Lily is almost ready and I just send Albus to get ready too”, James replied sitting next to Rose.
He looked around. Uncle Bill and Aunt Fleur were already there as well as Dominique and Louis. Victoire wasn’t there and James thought she must be somewhere consoling Teddy. Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione were there of course with Rose and Hugo. His grandparents that had just arrived and next to them, holding his mother’s hand, was Uncle Charlie. Uncle Percy and Uncle George would probably meet them there with their families.
“James, honey”, Molly said standing up and walking to him. “You look really starved”, she said. “Do you want me to make you something to eat before we leave?”
“No, Nana, I’m fine, I don’t want anything”.
“But, honey, you need to eat something”, she insisted. “I’ll go make you some eggs just the way you like them, okay?”
James nodded just because he didn’t want to hurt her feelings. Stuff like eating and sleeping felt unimportant to him. Not when his entire world has come crashing down in one moment; not when he knew that his father was dead, not when he was waiting for everyone to get ready so they could go to his funeral. A funeral they would have to hold, without actually having a body to burry, because there was nothing left of him. And there it was, the suffocating feeling shutting down his lungs once again and for a moment he couldn’t breathe as a huge lump climbed up his throat. He bit the inside of his cheek and bug his nails in his palm to suppress the sobs that wanted to make their way up his lips because he couldn’t allow himself to break down now; not when he was the only one still standing of his family.
He had barely seen his mother ever since Teddy and Aunt Hermione came home holding her up, bringing the horrifying news with them. Lily was crying over breakfast, she was crying over lunch, she was crying over dinner, she was crying herself to sleep; just like Hope did. His grandmother and his Aunt didn’t seem to be able to soothe her the way his dad could. And Albus…Albus was another story…
“James, maybe we should go check if Lily and Albus are ready”, Bill said and the boy looked at him for a whole moment before he understood what he said, then he gulped the lump in his throat and nodded.
“Yeah, sure”, he said and got up. Moving was better than sitting down and thinking anyway.
Both he and his Uncle climbed up the stairs silently. James made himself walk past his parents’ bedroom.
“What about mum?”
“Your grandpa will get her; don’t worry”, he said with a stern voice; it was obvious that he, Bill, was worried.
They banged on Lily’s door, but there was no answering.
“Lily?” Bill asked. “She’s not inside?”
“She’s inside alright”, James sighed and opened the door. Lily was inside wearing a plain, black dress and had her hair in an untidy ponytail; she was also sitting on the floor, holding an album of photographs and sobbing.
“Lily...” Bill mumbled hardly knowing what to say. James shook his head and walked over to his sister. He scooped down and pulled her up; taking a glimpse of the page the album was opened at. Christmas, one year ago. He swallowed the soreness once again, forcing himself to look away and looked at his sister instead.
“Lills, come on”, he said. “We have to go”.
That only made Lily sob harder and James hugged her.
“I don’t want to go to daddy’s funeral!” she said from his shoulder. “I don’t want to say goodbye to him! I want him back!” That was too much for James, who in spite his best efforts, couldn’t hold back the hot tears that run down his face. Bill walked over to them and hugged them both.
“Nobody wants to say goodbye, Lily”, he said. “We have to though”.
“Come on, Lills”, James said letting go of her and wiping the tears off his face. "Come on, grandma and grandpa are downstairs, and Uncle Charlie has come from Romania and..."
"Is dad with them?" Lily asked him shrugging his arms off.
"No".
"Then I really don't care", she retorted and turned her back at them.
"Lily, I know that if we go it will become more definite, more real but dad wouldn't want us to break down, Lills", James said with a hoarse voice and Lily turned to look at him again, breathing hard. "Or look bad at his funeral", the boy added wiping her tears away.
Lily gave him a watery smile and then after a few seconds she nodded, just like James knew she would.
“Okay”, she said. “But I don’t think that daddy was ever so vain as you are”.
“And she’s back to herself!” Bill smiled as James frowned at her. “Come on, let’s get Albus”.
The three of them walked to Albus’ room and James opened the door. Albus was lying on his bed staring at the ceiling with his arms under his head.
“Albus!” James exclaimed. “I told you to get dressed half an hour ago!”
Albus was wearing his old jeans and a white T-shirt, just like he did when James told him to change for the funeral. The boy sat up slowly and looked at them.
“I am not going”, he said in a definite tone.
“What do you mean you are not going?” James asked.
“I’m not going, James, it’s as simple as that”.
“Albus, you have to come”, Bill said confused. “I mean it’s your father’s…”
“My father is NOT dead, Uncle Bill!” Albus snapped. “So there is no need to be a funeral and there is no need for me to come”.
“Oh, Al, please don’t keep this up”, James pleaded with a tired voice. He had enough to deal with already; he could do without his brother’s denial.
“He’s not dead, James!” Albus exclaimed standing up. James rolled his eyes.
“Albus”, Bill said in a soothing voice. “I know you want to believe that but…”
“Uncle Bill, please listen to me”, Albus implored him. “I know dad isn’t dead; I would feel it if he was dead and I’m not. I know he is alive!”
“Then where is he?” Lily snapped letting go of James’ hand.
“I…I don’t know, but…”
“Daddy would do everything to be with us, don’t you think so Albus?” Lily cut across him.
“Yes, but...”
“Then why would he let us suffer like that, thinking he was dead, if he was alive?”
“Lily, I know he is alive!” Albus said. “Maybe he’s imprisoned or maybe he’s hurt or…”
“Or maybe he’s dead, Albus!” James exclaimed.
“He’s not!”
“Albus, for God’s sake, you are not a five year old!” James shouted. “Nobody wants him to be dead but he is! There’s nothing we can do about it!", he said, his own words feeling like sharp stabs to the heart. "We can only say goodbye".
“No”.
“Albus”, Bill said before James could start yelling again. “I know that it’s easier to deny it, but you have to accept the truth”.
“I am”, Albus said. “You are the ones, who cannot see the truth”.
“ENOUGH!” James bellowed. “I can’t deal with this”, he said shaking his head and left the room.
Albus grunted and turned his back to his sister and his uncle.
“Al, please come”, Lily said in a soft voice.
“Lills, I can’t”, Albus said. “I can’t go to that parody of a funeral”.
Lily walked across the room to stand in front of her brother.
“Please, Al”, she said taking his hand. “I know you’re still in denial but…”
“I’m not in denial!”
“Okay”, Lily said soothingly. “I didn’t want go either; but then I thought that James couldn’t deal with it by his own and neither could mum. What about mum, Albus?”
Albus couldn’t respond to this. He only swallowed.
“I know you think that daddy is alive”, she said and then tears started running down her cheeks again. “But we need you there! I need you there!” she said between sobs. “And what if you’re wrong, Albus?”
“I’m not…”
“But what if you are?” Lily cut across him. “You want to wake up one day knowing that you didn’t say goodbye to your father because you made a wrong assumption?”
Albus breathed hard, his eyes welling up as uncertainty washed over him. He wanted to keep believing that his father was alive but…but…There was that huge But that he could not ignore. That huge But his mind was forming, ignoring what his heart was telling him. He sighed.
“Fine”, he gave up. “I’ll get ready and be down in two minutes”.
As his sister and uncle left his room, he closed his eyes. Lily was right. Their father would do anything to see them, to be with them. And everyone said that there was no chance he survived that fire. Maybe he just had to accept that his father was dead.

Okay, it's sad and probably too long but I wanted to write it....
Tell me what you think...

Chapter 30 part 3

When a person receives the so called Dementor’s ‘kiss’, their soul is taken and their entire emotional range just ceases to exist. You’re not dead, you just can’t feel. Some would say that this fate is worse than death and they would probably be right and Ginny used to agree with them. But as she walked with her father’s arm hugging her shoulders, all she could think was how much she would prefer not to be able to feel, to be numb, how having your soul sucked out of your body would be so much preferable than this.
Because she couldn’t handle this. She really couldn’t; she had come to that realization a few moments after Hermione had confirmed it to her. After that it felt like the entire world had gone on mute, like everything around her were moving too fast for her to see or listen, it felt like nothing mattered. And she had her head filled with so many memories ever since she learned that she would never see him again, that it was hard for her to focus on anything else. It was like her happy past had taken a life of its own in an attempt to fight off her dim future. And even though it hurt like hell to remember the past she preferred it than coming back to reality. Because she couldn’t handle reality.

She had just won her first game! She almost couldn’t believe it! She was so worried before she rode her broom and now all that felt stupid. Of course they won; they had the best team ever!
As she saw him waiting for her outside the changing room she run to hug him and he lifted her up in his arms.
“Gin, that was amazing!”
“We sure nailed them, huh?” Ginny said when he let her down.
“Nailed them? I think one of the chasers actually started crying! Ginny Weasley, you are an amazing Quidditch player”, Harry smiled.
“Oh, really? Am I better than the great Harry Potter, then?”
“Hmm, maybe”, he said and she raised her eyebrows. “Okay, fine, you’re better but just a little bit”.
“A little bit works for me”, she laughed and kissed him. “Ron and Hermione waiting outside?” she asked then and she made to leave, but he held her wrist and pulled her back.
“Wait a minute, Gin”, Harry said.
“What?” she asked confused at the sudden change of his tone. “Why the serious face?”
“Well, I have something serious to tell you”, he replied. Her eyebrows went even higher.
“Okay”, she nodded then. “But just so you know if you cheated on me, Voldemort would be nothing comparing to what I am going to do”.
“What?” Harry laughed. “Gin, I would never cheat on you!”
“Well, I can’t help it when there’s an entire horde of girls out there dreaming of Harry Potter”.
“Yeah, but I only dream of one girl”, he said placing his arms around her waist.
“Is that right?”
“Yeah, it is. I love you, Gin and I probably always will”.
“Tell me that there is no but in that sentence”, she said terrified.
“There is”, Harry sighed. “I love you but I feel like dating you and having you sleeping over at my place every other night isn’t enough anymore”.
“Oh, my God”, Ginny said taking a few steps back. “Are you breaking up with me?”
“Wrong again”, Harry smiled and with that he got to one knee taking a small box out of his pocket. Ginny’s jaw dropped as she finally realized what was happening.
“Ginny Weasley, will you…?”
“YES!” she screamed falling on him and hugging him. “Yes, yes, yes, yes!”
“I didn’t even get to finish the question!”Harry complained.
“I’m sorry”, she giggled. “I couldn’t help it! I just can’t believe this is truly happening!”
“Why? Don’t you know how much I love you?”
“Um, no”, she laughed. “I guess you’re gonna have to say it again and again and again…”
“I love you, I love you, I love you, I LOVE YOU!
“Okay, okay, I heard you already”, Ginny laughed. “I love you too”.

As she sat in her seat with her father on one side and Bill on the other, she looked down at her hands and started whirling the ring on her finger. Sometimes that day, after she won her first match with the Harpies, felt so long ago, but at that time it felt like yesterday. But it couldn’t have been yesterday, because yesterday it was New Year’s. The very first New Year’s she had spent without him for a long time actually.

“This can’t be happening…this can’t be happening…this can’t be happening!”
“Ginny, calm down!” Ron said watching a nine months pregnant Ginny walking up and down.
“Calm…? CALM DOWN!” Ginny yelled hysterically. “Ron, my husband is gone for a week, he actually missed New Year’s, you just told me that some escapees have probably taken him and you want me to calm down?”
“Ginny, we all thought Harry was on a mission. Now that we know that they got him, we’re gonna get him back in no time!”
“You’d better get him back, Ronald!” Ginny yelled. “I need him! I’m due in a few weeks and I need him…the boys need him too!”
“Everything’s gonna be okay, Ginny”, Hermione said walking inside. “Ron, we just got some information about…”
“Oh, my God!” Ginny yelled then and they both turned to her.
“What?”
Ginny lifted her hand up from her legs and it was full of blood.
“Oh, my God!” Hermione yelled too just as Ron run Ginny before she collapsed on the floor.
The next thing Ginny remembered was waking up in the hospital. She was lying in a rather uncomfortable bed and she felt soreness at her entire body. She could also feel someone holding her hand. She turned her head slowly and she saw him sleeping on a chair with his head lying on her stomach.
“HARRY!” she yelled with a strained voice. He woke up immediately and for a moment looked at her like he couldn’t believe she was there. Then he exhaled relieved and started kissing every part of her face.
“Ginny, thank God!” he said.
“What happened?” she asked him. “I thought you were captured and…Oh, my God, Lily!” she exclaimed and her hands flew to her stomach but it was empty. “What happened to my baby?”
“She’s fine”, Harry smiled in spite the tears that were shining in the corners of his eyes. “She looks just like you”.
“She’s okay”, Ginny said relieved falling back to her pillows, and then she looked at him. “I thought I lost you”.
“You thought you lost me?” he asked with disbelief. “Ginny, you’ve been unconscious for like three days and before that I had the healers telling me that both you and the baby were going to die! I thought...I thought...” his voice trailed off.
Ginny gasped. Now that she really looked at him, she could clearly see that he was a wreck; she couldn't recall a time he had looked so broken. His face was pale and his eyes were bloodshot and puffy, like he had been crying and had black circles under them; obviously he had barely had any sleep. All her anger at him for getting himself in danger was extinguished.
“Baby, I’m so sorry”, she said caressing his cheek. His somewhat pained expression changed and he smiled.
“Just don’t scare me like that ever again”, he said and she nodded before he kissed her.
“I love you”, she said then.
“I love you too”.

She couldn’t really see what was happening in front of her. It all was a blur to her, but she didn’t really want it to turn real. Real wasn’t real, real couldn't be real. There were times, like when she had Lily that their lives weren’t so great, but all those times he was always there at the end. Even when she thought she wouldn’t see him again, he had always managed to make it. He lived through Voldemort, for crying out loud.

She could clearly see him sitting under that beech tree, but she was kind of hesitant of approaching him. What do you say after an entire year of being apart? What do you say after the war and the reason that kept you apart is over? Did he still feel the same? Would he want to be with her again now?
Just as she tried to muster up her courage however he got up and turned to walk towards the castle, but he stopped at his tracks when he saw her. Then he breathed and slowly walked towards her. He was still covered in blood and mud and so was she. It was a harsh battle after all.
The wounds and the cuts on her body didn’t really hurt, but the deep, sharp pain in her heart from Fred’s loss was like a sucking hole. And yet as she looked into his emerald eyes when he stopped in front of her, her heart seemed to be trembling for an entire different reason. She sighed and then her hesitance was gone and she had her courage returned.
“Ginny, I…” he started but he didn’t get to finish his sentence because she slapped him across the face. “Ouch!”
“How could you act like you were dead? Didn’t you think of all of us? What about me? My brother was gone, Lupin and Tonks too and you made me think that I’ve lost you too!”
“I’m sorry!” he said. “I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you; and I’m more sorry than you can even imagine for Fred and Remus and Tonks”.
“I know”, she nodded and then she shook her head in an attempt to hold the tears back. “BUT the war is over now, isn’t it?” she said trying to smile. “It’s a time to be happy not sad. Fred wouldn’t want us to be sad”.
“Right”, Harry nodded.
“So, um…” Ginny started feeling her cheeks blushing. “Now that Voldemort is gone, we can be together again, right?”
“You want us to be together again?”
“Well, yeah”, she said awkwardly. “I mean, I still like you. Do you still like me?”
“Well…no, I don’t think I like you”, Harry shook his head.
“Oh”, Ginny said her smiled fading. “Okay”, she nodded trying to keep a straight face. She was always afraid of it and now it had turned true.
“Don’t take that face”, he laughed and she looked at him outraged. “I didn’t mean it like that”.
“Then how do you mean it?”
“When Voldemort raised his wand and pointed it at me, the moments before he casted the Killing curse, all I could think about was you”, he said his face turning red; her heart lost a beat. “So, I don’t think I just like you, Ginny. I think I love you”.
She was left speechless from the shock. She had dreamed about him saying those three word numerous times and now he did!
“Okay, maybe you should say something now”, Harry suggested after a few moments of silence. She gulped and then she flung her arms around his neck and kissed him. It had been almost a year since she had first kissed him, after that Quidditch match he couldn’t come, and yet she still couldn’t get over just how perfect the feeling was. It was back at her house, on his birthday, that she had kissed him more passionately that she had ever kissed anyone and yet now she felt that this kiss was even more passionate and affectionate than that. They were both out of breath when they finally broke apart.
“I love you too”, she smiled.

The people all around her stood up and her father and Bill grabbed her arms and gently pulled her on her feet too. She could see the little man that performed the funerals and weddings for wizards and witches but she couldn’t really hear what he was saying and she didn't really care. Words weren’t enough. Words, speeches…nothing would be enough to describe everything that Harry is…
Was…she thought to herself and she felt the waves of grief come crushing down on her again. Bill hugged her as she started crying, but no hug in the world was as comforting as his. And she just wanted to stay in her happy memories; she didn’t want to think that he was gone, that she would never look in his eyes again, that she would never hear his voice again and that every day from now on would be a day without him.
They had lived so much together, that she always thought that they would die together, in like a really old age, after they saw their kids having their own kids and living a happy life. Well, that didn’t agree with the plan.

“Ginny? Gin?” Harry said quietly as he was crouched down in front of the couch she had fallen asleep, still wearing his coat. She opened her eyes and smiled at him.
“Hey, you’re back”, she said sitting up, rubbing her eyes all the while.
“Baby, I’m so sorry”, he said apologetically. “Matthias had some important briefing to give us and I couldn’t get out of it”.
“It’s okay”, she said. She was angry with him, but his full of remorse look and his puppy eyes were enough to butter her up.
“No, it’s not”, he shook his head, looking at the brown, strapless cocktail dress she was wearing. “It’s our first anniversary and I totally ruined it! And you’re so beautiful and I’m so sorry!”
“Honey, it’s okay”, she said hugging his neck. “I want to hope that we’re gonna have a lot more anniversaries”.
“If you put up with me…” he laughed. “Well, it’s too late to go out, but um…that doesn’t mean you won’t get to dance with me”, he added standing up and holding his hand out for her. She laughed and took it. He placed his hands around her waist and they started spinning around slowly. With a flick of his wand the radio started playing a song they had danced at their wedding and she clung onto him tightly, with her head buried in the bent of his neck.
“Actually you did ruin the plan I had made to tell you something I wanted”, she said after a few moments.
“What?” he asked looking down at her.
“Well, it’s all ruined now and I can’t tell you”.
“Come on, Gin, you know I’m terribly sorry”.
“Okay, okay, stop looking so sad”, she laughed.
“What you wanted to tell me?” he asked her again and she left his hug to fully look at him.
“I’m pregnant”.
His jaw dropped.
“Wha…What?” he stammered after a few seconds.
“You’re gonna be a daddy”, she smiled.

In spite her tears, she felt the corners of her lips twitching. James. Every time they had a baby was amazing but still the first time was different. She thought it was because that was the very first time, when she saw Harry holding their son that she realized that that was it. They were a family. She could still remember how her heart had expanded that day and never had returned to its previous size and how she could see the happiness in his eyes. She had managed to do what she always wanted. Make him happy. Really, really happy.
But that made her think of something else, something more recent.

“Just know”, she said looking up at him, “that I wouldn’t make it without you”. He looked at her with a serious look on his face.
“Yes you would”, he said and she sat up looking at him. “You’ll have to…for Jamie, Al and Lily”.
“Harry…”
“I know that it’s probably not the right time for this but given the situation with the Death Eaters, I think we should make this conversation”.
“What are you talking about?” she asked confused.
“Gin, if something happens to me…”
“You were the one who told me not to think like that! If I can’t think like that you can’t either!”
“If something happens to me”, he repeated without commenting her words, “I need to know that you’ll be okay”.
“Okay? I just had a nightmare of you dying and I was scared to death…you think that there’s a way for me to be okay with you dead?”
“I’m not going to die”, he repeated. “But if I do you’ll be the only one to protect the kids”.
“Fine”, she said. “I’ll promise that if something happens to you, I’ll try and be strong for the kids, if you promise me the same thing”.
“What?” he asked perplexed.
“Will you be okay and strong if I die?” she said raising her eyebrows.
“You’re not going…”
“Will you?”
“I will”, he responded and she nodded.
“Then I will too”.

He had made her promise. He had made her promise that she would be strong and that she would take care of their kids and she had taken that promise. It was like someone had snapped their fingers and brought her out of her hypnosis. She was suddenly pretty aware of everything all around her. Bill was still holding her, but she found out that she hadn’t lost the use of her legs after all.
She had promised him. She had promised him and yet she had no idea where her kids were for the last couple of days. She realized with a jolt that she hadn't even fed Hope; what had she been eating? Hell, she hadn't even seen them. All she did for the last days was lying on their bed, hugging Harry's clothes to her, wearing his coat or spraying herself with his cologne; she was trying to feel him close to her and yet she had completely neglected the things that will always bind her with him, their kids. She felt quilt spinning around her stomach and getting out of Bill’s hug, she looked around for them. It was their father’s funeral, they needed her and she wasn’t with them.
She spotted Lily a few seats away from her. Her mother and her daughter were crying together with their red hair mingled. Ginny slowly left Bill’s and her father’s side and approached them. She felt eyes on her but she really couldn’t care less. Her mother looked up at her when she reached them and Ginny only gave her a nod, that she understood completely. She left Lily, who looked around confused and then saw Ginny. She smiled and got up. Ginny hugged her and she felt her hot tears falling on her.
“Don’t cry, honey, it’s okay”, she said stroking her hair.
It was hard for Ginny to believe but she felt the weight of her sorrow lift a little bit. At least she still had her children. Harry was right. She had to stay strong for them; they were all she had left.
She saw Albus looking at them and she gestured him to come close to them. As the boy approached them, she couldn’t help but allowing some more tears to wet her face. He was so like him; his black, messy hair sticking out in every direction, his green eyes, even the way he walked towards her reminded her of him. When he reached them, she hugged him with her other hand. He had no tears in his eyes, just a solemn look, but she thought he was only trying to play strong.
Then next moment James was next to them too. When she saw him, it dawned to her how stupid she was to only think that losing Harry was so terrible for her. What about her children? James looked like in the last two days had aged a couple of decades and she didn’t think she could recall a time he looked more depressed. She lifted her hand from Lily’s shoulder and stroked his cheek, wiping some of his tears away. He smiled at her and then hugged them too.
Ginny still felt like someone was stabbing her heart with every breath she drew, but she knew now that she would have to put up with it. For them. She had to find Hope too. Hope. She was probably the only Hope she had left.

Artemis shook her wand and the floating picture depicting the first lines of the people, who were at the funeral, with Ginny and the three kids at the front, vanished. She turned and the cruel smile on her face was bigger than ever.
“So, how did you like your funeral?”
Harry lifted his head and looked at her hatefully, with his eyes swimming with tears.

Chapter 30 part 4

Ginny knocked on the door twice but she didn’t get a reply. She slowly pushed the door open and picked in the room, but there was no sign of James. She had lost track of him after the wake and now she didn’t seem to be able to find him anywhere. Every moment she pushed herself to take another breath and keep on living hurt, but she had to make sure they were okay. Albus was downstairs with Ron and Hermione and everyone who stayed after the wake and Lily was in her room with some of her cousins, but where was James?
She found him soon enough though, as she opened the door to the bedroom in which she would have to sleep by her own from now on. James was inside standing by the window with his back at her. He was holding something in his hands and as Ginny walked close enough, she realized it was Harry’s Invisibility Cloak.
“Honey, what…?”
“Do you remember last summer the day we came back from school?” he asked her turning to look at her; his eyes were watering.
“How can I forget? That was the day everything started, the day we learned about Apostollo”.
“Well, I didn’t know then”, James shrugged. “But I had my own problems that day”, he said and laughed at how stupid all that seemed now. “I had a fight with some Slytherins in the train back home and one of them gave me a black eye”.
“What?” Ginny said confused. “But you didn’t have…”
“That’s because dad fixed it before we returned so you wouldn’t know”, he smiled. “He was yelling at me all the way back, but yet somehow I managed to convince him not to tell you”.
Ginny sighed shaking her head.
“Of course he didn’t tell me”, she smiled and James nodded. Then he looked down at the Cloak in his hands.
“Remember when I took this without asking?” he said.
“Which time?” Ginny smirked.
“The one I presumably sneaked out to go see Roxanne because she was sick”, James went on.
“What do you mean presumably?” Ginny frowned.
“I never went to Roxanne”, he said. “A Muggle rock band was performing in a bar not very far from here and they are really famous even among wizards and I wanted to go see them”, he said.
“And why did I think you went to Roxanne?”
“Don’t worry; I never got into the bar. A Muggle police officer caught me and took me to the police station”.
“What?” Ginny exclaimed.
“When dad came to pick me up”, James said smiling at the memory, “he was so angry, I really thought he was gonna have a stroke!” he said. “But he still didn’t tell you, because it was two days before your birthday and he didn’t want to upset you”, he explained. “I just thought I should let you know, now”, he shrugged then. “I mean, it’s not like he’s ever gonna tell you, now”.
“Oh, honey”, Ginny sighed and walked over to him as he sat down on the bed, trying to stop the sobs but he couldn’t. “Don’t cry”, she said hugging him.
“It's just so...so unfair!”, he said as the tears became silent but kept running down his face. “Why dad? He lived through so much to die this way? It's so wrong and I just...I don't understand”.
“I know, James”, she whispered, feeling her eyes sting from the tears that wanted to fall, but she wouldn't allow them to. “But…we lost him…how can we ever understand that?”
“But, now he’ll never know”, James whispered getting out of her arms and looking at the floor. “He’ll never know what a great father he was…he’ll never know how much I loved him”.
“He already does, baby”, Ginny whispered back.
“What are we gonna do without him?” he asked her after a while. Ginny remained silent for a moment.
“I really don’t have an answer to that, James. I guess we're gonna have to get used to life without him”, she said and he looked at her.
"It just seems so unreal, you know", he said. "I don't think my mind completely understands that I'm never going to see him again or talk to him again".
"I know, honey, trust me I know", Ginny whispered stroking his hair. James looked at her for a few moments and then took a deep breath. His eyes were somewhat composed for now and he seemed like he had regained control over his emotions.
“You know we have more things to deal with”, he sighed.
“What do you mean?” she asked confused.
“Well, Albus”.
“Albus?” Ginny repeated. “I thought Albus…I thought Albus was dealing with it surprisingly well actually. I expected him to be the most devastated one but he’s better than you”.
“Oh, I let go one day and you have a conclusion” James said wiping his tears away.
“No, I am not”, she said stroking his cheek. “I know how strong you’ve been, but now it’s time to let me handle this mess of a family, okay?”
“You’re sure you’re up to it?”
“I have to”, she replied. “I promised your father”.
James sighed, closing his eyes and when he opened them again he had a determined face on.
“Okay then, come on”, he said standing up and stretching out his hand for her.
“Wait a minute”, she said before they walked out. “Just so you know you’re grounded for that police station incident”.
“What?” James snapped. “Mum, it was three years ago!” he protested.
“Do you want me to answer that or shall I just glare?” she asked.
“But…”
“Do you want me to ground you for the fight on the train too?” she asked him and he scowled. “Didn’t think so”, she smiled and left the room. James grunted and followed her downstairs.

“How are you feeling?” Hermione asked her husband rubbing his back, after Albus left to go to his room.
“Well, if you’re referring to my physical condition, I guess I’m okay”, Ron said looking straight ahead. “But if you mean how I feel that my best friend is dead because of me…well, then I don’t think I’m that good”.
“Ron, what are you talking about?” Hermione snapped standing up. “Harry didn’t die because of you! You were unconscious for God’s Sake!”
“I’m an ex Auror”, Ron shook his head as his eyes were welling up. “I used to be his partner for like six years or so and yet I couldn’t protect myself and George against two Death Eaters and you had to come and save me!”
“Ron, will you stop?” Hermione said angrily. “If this is anyone’s fault it’s mine! I was the one who couldn’t get in and get him out”.
“Yeah, because you had to save yours truly”, Ron said bitterly also standing up.
“Ron, he told me to…”
“He didn’t know, Hermione! He didn’t know he wouldn’t be able to…to get out”, Ron exclaimed as a few tears that he could no longer retain started running down his face.
“Ron, I know you're angry, but...”, Hermione sighed. She didn’t have any more tears; she had cried them all.
“I’m not angry, Hermione! I’m outraged!” Ron snapped. “Don’t you see you shouldn’t have tried to save me? You saved me because I’m your damn husband but you should have saved him because he was…he was the best…because…”
“Ron, stop”, Hermione whispered hugging him.
“Because what is my little sister going to do without him?”
“She’s gonna learn how to live without him…just like we will”, Hermione said.
“I still don’t get it”, Ron shook his head. “Why would Artemis put the shop on Fiendfyre if all she wanted was Harry’s blood? Why did she jeopardize his life?”
“Because she said that the blood of any of Harry’s kids would do”, Hermione shrugged. “I guess after she realized that Harry wasn’t really needed, she just wanted to get him out of the way”.
“But, why didn’t she do it earlier? She had the chance before. Yet, she said that she wouldn’t kill Harry because when Voldemort came back, he should have the pleasure to do it!”
“I don’t know, Ron”, Hermione shook her head; those questions have been driving her mad over the last few days too, nothing seemed to fit. “Maybe after they got the book, they got really paranoid, trying to bring him back and maybe she thought that Harry would be able to stop them somehow”.
“So you’re saying that if he hadn’t given them the book, nothing of all these would have happened?”
“Probably not”, Hermione shrugged. “I just wish he hadn’t done it…I wish he could have found a way…”
“WHAT?”
Ron and Hermione both jumped at Ginny’s exasperated voice from the door of the living room. She and James had both come downstairs looking for Albus and both have heard the last lines of the discussion.
“Hey Ginny”, Hermione tried to smile.
“Do not ‘Hey Ginny’ me!” she said irritated.
“What’s wrong?” Ron asked confused.
“Oh, I don’t know…EVERYTHING!” she snapped and with that she crossed the room and stood right in front of Hermione. “Don’t you dare blame my husband for this!” she told her.
“What?” Hermione asked confused. “I didn’t…”
“I heard you!” Ginny said irritated. “It’s not his fault! He had to give them the book!”
“Yeah”, James whispered from the door. “It’s not his fault, it’s mine”.
“No, Ginny, James, that’s not what she meant”, Ron tried to explain as Ginny crossed the room again to hug her son.
“I only meant that if Harry hadn’t given them the book, if he had found a way around it then everything would have been different”, Hermione said still taken aback from Ginny’s reaction.
“Okay”, Ginny said closing her eyes and still clinging tightly on James. “You listen to me Hermione, don’t you even dare blame my husband’s death on my son”.
“I didn’t I…”
“James wasn’t there, Hermione!” Ginny snapped. “You were! You were there and you couldn’t save him, could you?” she told her and Hermione was left speechless as her eyes welled up; what do you know, she wasn’t drained from tears after all.
“Ginny, stop that”, Ron said irritated. “Hermione, did the best she could, if you want to blame it on someone, blame it on me!”
“I blame it on both of you!” Ginny yelled.
“Mum…” James whispered trying to retain her but Ginny’s anger was uncontrollable.
“Harry was always there for you, Harry always saved you, Harry always put up with your stupid fights and your stupid complains and whining, Harry offered you his house when yours got burned, Harry helped you through everything ever since you met him!” Ginny said exasperated. “He has been there for almost the entire of your life and neither of you could find the courage to save him!”
“Ginny…” Ron whispered startled. It was one thing to blame yourself for something and a whole another to have someone actually blame it on you. Ron felt like his stomach was turning and his lungs were ready to burst. She was right. Harry was always there to save them and he, Ron, couldn't save him this one time that he was in danger. And now Harry was dead, leaving them behind to pick up the pieces.
Ginny paced up and down in front of them. She knew deep down that she was going to regret for her outburst but she didn't care at the moment. Anger was so much better than the wreching pain she was feeling until now.
“Get out of my house!” she said with a sudden cold voice.
“What?” Hermione said with disbelief.
“You heard me”, she said with the same fatal voice. “Get your brats and get out of my house!”
“Mum!” James exclaimed. “Mum, you’re been unreasonable! It’s not their…”
“James, stay out of this!” Ginny snapped and then turned at the dumbstruck couple in her living room. “I’m gonna go up and find my other son and see what’s wrong with him and when I come back down, I want you all gone”.

“Mum, you can’t do this! Uncle Ron is your brother!” James said chasing after his mother as she was climbing the stairs fuming.
“Do I look like I want to talk about this?” she told him.
“Mum”, James said grabbing her elbow at the top of the stairs. “You know it’s not their fault”.
“It’s not yours either!” Ginny snapped. James lowered his head.
“But they’re right. If dad hadn’t given them the book…”
“Then I would have thrown a funeral three months earlier”, Ginny said irritated and then her characteristics relaxed as she placed her hands on his face. “Your father did what he thought was right, but that wasn’t what got him killed, James”, she said and then her anger was back again. “What got him killed was the fact that people in the Weasley family are stupid!”
“Excuse me, weren't you in the Weasley family?”
“Yeah”, she nodded. “I was the one who told him to go with Hermione, wasn’t I?”
“Oh, mum”, James shook his head. “That’s what this is all about? You couldn’t have known! You just…”
“Okay”, Ginny stopped him. “How about we stop this irrational ‘whose fault is it?’ game and go see your brother?”
“But mum haven’t you realized that you just kicked Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione out?” James asked. “You know dad wouldn’t want this!”
“I know”, she nodded gloomily. “But I really can’t have them in my house, when they survived the fire that killed your father. It’s too hard”, she shook her head and then she sighed. “Okay, Albus now”.
James exhaled unpleased but followed her inside his brother’s room. She walked inside without knocking to find Albus sitting on his desk drawing something on a piece of parchment. As Ginny walked next to him, James started wondering if this was a good idea. He wasn’t really sure if Albus was still on his denial phase since he came in the funeral, but if he was, James wondered if his mother would be able to deal with it.
“Hey, honey”, Ginny smiled as Albus turned around to look at them.
“Oh, hey”, he said and then turned back at the parchment in front of him.
“What are you doing?” she asked glancing back at James. He shrugged.
“Well, we’re going back to Hogwarts in a week and our first match with Ravenclaw is coming up so I was making some game plans”, he explained.
“Oh”, Ginny said in a confused tone. She turned to James again and he just grinned at her. “Well, I meant how you are. You know, after the funeral?”
The boy just shrugged. Ginny looked at James again utterly bemused. James sighed and walked forward.
“Albus?” he said and his brother turned to look at him; there was something hostile in his expression, like he was provoking him to dare to go on. “Albus, mum is really trying here, maybe you should too”.
“I don’t understand”, Ginny said looking from Albus to James and then back. “Honey, don’t this the wrong way”, she told Albus then. “But I don’t thing making game plans right after your father’s wake is the most natural thing in the world”.
Albus gulped and James saw him trying to decide whether he would say to their mother what he thought or not. He closed his eyes and sighed and James knew he had taken the wrong decision; typical Albus.
“Mum, I only came to that so called funeral because of you”, he said.
“Albus please stop”, James whispered.
“What do you mean?” Ginny asked him.
“I don’t think that dad is dead”, Albus told her.
Ginny’s eyes widened and for a few moments she couldn’t say anything. Then, she turned to James with her eyes still widened. James shrugged and grinned at her in an ‘I told you so’ kind of way.
“Honey…” she said turning to him again with a sad look on her eyes.
“Do not look at me like this, mum! Not you too!” Albus snapped.
“Honey”, Ginny whispered again as she tried to find what to say. “Nobody wants him dead but…”
“No, mum, I am not making this up!” Albus said. “He’s just not dead! I know it! Why can’t you believe me?”
“Okay, Al, come here”, Ginny sighed and taking his hand, she made him sit down on the bed. “You know how much I adored your father, right?”
“Yeah”, the boy nodded.
“Well, then you know that there’s really no other person that would want him alive more than I do”, she said.
“But, I know he’s alive”, Albus said.
“He’s not Albus”, Ginny whispered and the boy stretched out his hand and wiped an unnoticed tear that had left one of her eyes.
“Why are you doing this to me?” Albus said. “Why can’t you believe me?”
“I want to, baby, but…”
“Mum, dad survived Voldemort, survived almost twenty years as an auror….don’t you think he would have survived a fire?”
“It wasn’t a simple fire, Al”, Ginny shook her head.
“Yes, but my father wasn’t simple either”.
“Albus…”
“You’re not going to change his mind, mum”, James sighed. “Almost everyone tried. He’s in denial and there’s we can do”.
“I am not in denial”, Albus snapped jumping up.
“No, of course not”, James said ironically. “You’ve only developed a sixth sense, nobody else has!”
“James, stop making fun of him!” Ginny said irritated. James grunted and left the room. “Honey…”Ginny started again.
“Let it go, mum”, Albus said still shaking from anger. “He was right about one thing; you’re not changing my mind”.
“But, Al…”
“No”, he shook his head and got up turning his back at her. She fought with herself for a moment, but this whole situation was overcoming her, so she just walked to him and after hugging him and stroking his hair, she left the room.
When the door closed Albus exhaled as his eyes filled with tears. He walked over to his desk again and flipped over the parchment. It read only four words: ‘Dad where are you?’
