I've often been asked about my Ministry character Sion Jetza's past. It's a pretty chequered past, and I've never been able to sum it up in a character biography, because that seems to take away its essence. Hence, this FF. <3

♥ Prologue[s Happen So Often]

To be honest, Sion had never considered running off, before. She had considered shaking some sense into her mother, yes, but running off and leaving her alone, no. But that Nevena could go this far for the sake of riches, her daughter had had no idea.

Or perhaps she had had the idea, and refused to believe it.

The deal had been made in the drawing room, and Sion had been made to leave the house beforehand.

"You haven't seen Jesmina in ages. I think you should go to her house tonight," Nevena had said, at lunch.

"I saw her this morning," Sion's voice had been cool.

"The Knitting Society needs a new hand, you know. And they have a meeting, tonight. I do believe you should attend. I could make the necessary arrangements."

"No, thank you... mother."

"There's a game of Quidditch happening in the Ellipse Stadium, later in the evening. I could get you tickets."

"Please don't. It's not a big game."

"How about Faux? You should take Faux on a ride, and go to visit that boyfriends of yours. Some Yong or Ping, isn't it?"

That was the moment Sion had realized something had to be up. Until then, she had thought Nevena just needed the house to herself, so she could have another gentleman over. God knew she had done it thousands of times before. But Faux? Nevena hated nine out of every ten animals [and did not exactly like the tenth, either] horses most of all. And Faux was a horse. To bring him up, even as an excuse to get her out of the house, must mean something serious. Sion resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow.

"Right," she said, neglecting to correct the name, or tell her mother that the boy had never been more than a casual friend. "I will."

But she hadn't.

She had left, Faux and all, and ridden him past the river, and then she had come back, at least two hours before her mother expected her. She had slipped into the house through her bedroom window [Nevena sent her away so often, she had become an expert at that] and she had spied - the initial twinge of guilt had disappeared in seconds - on her mother. It hadn't shocked her to see they had a dark artiste in the house [there had been stranger people in her house, before] but it had shocked her that her mother intended to give her up.

She had no plans to become some dark artiste's apprentice.

Oh, and Nevena had plans. Plenty of plans. Sion could just be sent to his house under the pretence of meeting one of Nevena's old friends and, once she was there, her mother could tell her she intended for her to learn the trade and leave. The dark artiste in question would have a new student to teach ["She might be frustrated at first, but she'll come around," Nevena told the man graciously. "She's always been interested in strange things. She's taking Ghoul Studies and all that junk at school, really. She likes dark things, believe me."] and Nevena would get an undisclosed sum of money in return.

Later, at night, Sion - having left the house before the gentleman did - had "returned" home. Nevena had been full of talk about how one of her oldest friends, Lady Something or the Other, had written to her and invited her over, and how Nevena had accepted, and how they must be off first thing in the morning. Sion had thought of confronting her, and then realized she didn't have a chance of escaping or even shaking her mother, if she did that. So she had nodded and smiled and looked at her mother's alluring eyes and beautiful figure, and thought,

Did she really love dad?

But, since Dad was very dead, and Nevena didn't talk of [or let others talk of] him, Sion knew she couldn't hope for an answer to that.

She had stayed up till one in the morning. She had stayed up all night, but she had stayed up in the mansion till one in the morning. Nevena never stayed up late, if Sion was in the house, but the daughter had still made sure she could hear no enchanting laughter, no deceptively gentle footsteps, no telling creaks, before she slipped out into the night. She had thought of packing some galleons, and then decided against it. The mansion did belong to Nevena, and Sion had no plans to take anything that belonged to her mother.

She had slipped on a dark green cloak, hair pinned up underneath the matching hood, and made herself a giant sandwich, full of chunks of cheese and shredded chicken and sliced tomatoes and mint leaves. For later. Then the fifteen year old had done the one thing she had not been able to do since the day her father had died, and knew she could not again, and turned the doorknob of the master bedroom, and stepped inside.

You could tell the bedroom had once been occupied, and often, by Nevena. Dust clung to the furniture and gathered on the sills, but it had her chic, gorgeous, dazzling taste stamped all over it. But, here and there, in uncountable little details and uncountable little items, Sion saw the far gentler but no less subtle touch that had been her father's and her father's alone. And for a moment, she thought the bedroom had to mean something for Nevena, if she hadn't stepped into it even once, not even to shift or remove an item she particularly loved, in the past five years.

She slipped out of the bedroom, dust rising in little spirals at each step, and down the staircase, into the main garden. The grass, dark green, seemed to stretch on for miles, the dew on its surface glistening in the night. She had a desire to go and see Faux, but she knew she couldn't. Mustn't. If she saw him now, she would not be able to leave him behind, and the one thing she needed right now, was to put as much distance between herself and Nevena as she could, as quickly as she could.

Unlocking the clean broom-shed using a little silver key, she retrieved the Marigold 950 Jesmina had gifted her on her last birthday and, having locked the door again, swung one leg over the polished broomstick.

Then she kicked off.
