Gryffindor House

Sirius made a show of thinking about this. “I’m not sure…” he pondered for a moment. “I know!” he snapped his fingers, “The Quidditch World Cup! Lower tier, behind the Bulgarian goal posts, terrible seats!”

Harry looked at Sirius as though trying to remember, “no… we didn’t sit there…” he ventured, “did you camp in the first field?”

“Nope, sorry mate,” Sirius said regretfully, “we were in the third field, bloody long walk,” he added, hoping this was true.

Harry still looked uncertain, but let the subject drop, to his Godfather’s relief. Sirius wasn’t in the mood to try and recollect everything that Harry and Ron had told him about the match and he certainly didn’t want to test out the scroll yet.

“I’m Brian Wulfric, by the way,” Sirius added by way of introduction.

“Right, I’m Harry Potter,” the boy extended his hand for Sirius to shake. Sirius noted with pride the boy’s increased confidence. While at one time the boy may have introduced himself with a slight air of embarrassment, now he simply stated himself as though to say “this is who I am, think what you want.”

“Nice to meet you, Harry,” Sirius clasped the boy’s hand and was sure to look him in the eye while doing so. He could see a faint glimmer of surprise followed by relief in their green depths. Too many people stared at the boy’s scar when introduced to him and few could get beyond that. Knowing Harry so well, Sirius knew he had earned a measure of the boy’s respect for not making a production of it.

Suddenly a flash bulb went off, blinding them and interrupting Harry from replying. Apparently the Creevey brothers felt that the most famous boy in school entering into an alliance with who they felt might be the second most famous student was extremely newsworthy.

Harry blinked repeatedly, “didn’t we ask you to tone it down with that thing?” he asked.

“Sorry, Harry!” Dennis grinned, not the least bit upset, “we want to do an article for the school paper on Brian and what it’s like to be the new student.”

“Don’t you have about a hundred first years to interview first?” Sirius rubbed his eyes, sounding a bit grumpy. He didn’t need his face plastered on papers all over the school.

“We can do that later,” Dennis replied, waving this off as though interviewing a hundred first years was something he could do with no trouble. “No one’s ever started in their sixth year before!”

“So, are you going to be taking first year classes?” Colin chirped in.

“What? No!” Sirius found that talking to these two was a lot like watching the quaffle get passed at a Quidditch match.

Lavender and Parvati glared at the boys for their disrespect, “why don’t you sit and tell us all about it then,” Lavender invited.

Sirius found himself dragged over to the couch, the girls taking up spots on either side of him. Dennis and Colin followed eagerly, as did a surprising number of other curious students. Harry, for his part, took a seat in a comfy armchair nearby and grinned. For once the spotlight wasn’t on him.

“There’s really not much to say…” Sirius tried. Normally he would enjoy embellishing a wild tale for them, but with age, he had acquired a bit of caution, if only a small bit.

The girls didn’t look convinced and edged closer to listen. Sirius could feel Lavender’s leg brush up against his, but he couldn’t move over without leaning on Parvati.

“So where have you been all these years?” Parvati asked.

“I escaped from an institution,” Sirius couldn’t help teasing them just a little, as their faces lit up with interest. “Decided I could hide out here…”

“Really?” Dennis was in his glory.

“No!” Sirius scoffed. “My family doesn’t believe in going away to school. I’ve had private tutors. They want me to be a shut in,” he added ruefully.

The girls looked disappointed, as this story wasn’t nearly so romantic.

“Why the sudden change of heart, then?” Harry asked, having been the only one who didn’t believe the escape story.

“Well, what with the state of things these days…” Sirius knew that all assembled understood what he meant, “my Uncle stepped in and convinced my mum that a formal education would be better. So now I’m here,” He concluded hoping this was dull enough to satisfy the students.

“Who’s your Uncle?” Harry was too shrewd to make Sirius comfortable.

“You wouldn’t know him,” Sirius replied blandly.

Still hoping to salvage a story out of this, Dennis and Colin looked ready to ask more questions, but were interrupted by the return of Ron from his prefect duties.

“So, did you put the kids to sleep?” Harry asked his friend.

“Too right, I did!” Ron grinned, cracking his knuckles.

“I think it’s time that we all retire,” Hermione put in, ignoring Ron’s remark. “It is a school night,” she stated heading toward the girl’s stairway, expecting the others to follow.

The boy rolled his eyes behind Hermione’s back, but no one argued, heading up to their respective dormitories.

Upstairs, Sirius was pleased that once again, little had changed in Gryffindor House besides the names of the students who lived there. The dormitory was set up exactly as it had once been years ago. He spied his trunk and belongings tucked neatly at the foot of a bed on the end. He smiled to himself, pleased, as this was once his spot years ago. Ron was set up in Remus’ old place and Harry in James’. Other things had not changed as well, as the boys clearly had no intention of turning in just yet.

The group gathered around Harry and Ron’s beds, breaking out smuggled butterbeer and treats from Zonko’s. Sirius brought over some of his goods from the Weasley’s store to share as everyone traded stories about their summer holidays. This was not lost on Ron, however…

“No thanks,” he turned down the offer of some disreputable looking candies, ”that’s from my brother’s shop,” the boy observed, “and I’ve learned not to trust anything they make.”

“Well, you should tell them that,” Sirius put aside the candy, opting for a safe looking chocolate frog,” they seem to think you’ll be helping them make sales.”

“What do you mean?” Ron asked confused.

“It’s true,” Dean Thomas put in, sipping a butterbeer, “they’ve been giving out your name to every Hogwarts student who walks in.”

Ron flushed so that his face matched his hair, “they better not be!”

“They called you their Hogwarts connection,” Seamus Finnegan laughed.

Ron sputtered in indignation as his friends got a laugh from the boy’s reaction. Before long, the topic of conversation turned to girls…

“So how did you manage to get two of the best looking girls in our year to follow you around already?” Dean asked Sirius somewhat enviously.

“Aah, it’s the new guy thing,” Sirius waved it off, handing out more goods. “They’ll be on to someone else next week,” he replied, hoping he was right.

“What does everyone think of the new DADA professor?” Seamus asked significantly, raising his eyebrows.

“Thank you!” Ron exclaimed, “exactly what I was saying at dinner! The girls got Lockhart, finally we have something to look at!”

This brought forth agreement from everyone present, except Neville who looked slightly embarrassed.

“She kind’ve looks familiar for some reason, though,” Ron continued thoughtfully, ripping in to some Bertie Bott’s. “What do you think Harry?”

“I’ve never seen her,” Harry shrugged.

Observing his Godson as close as he was, Sirius was sure that the boy had just rubbed his forehead when he said this… Keeping in mind the conversation he’d overheard on her arrival, Sirius vowed to keep a closer watch on the new professor. He wished he had his old…

Suddenly Sirius choked on his butterbeer. The boys stopped their conversation to stare at him. Harry raised a hand helpfully to slap Sirius on the back. "Are you ok?” he asked.

“Fine, fine…” Sirius lied, not believing he could be so stupid. He had been about to wish that he had the Marauder’s Map. An item that now lay safely in his Godson’s possession. The one object that could probably ruin this whole deception…

Aha! A post! Oh I loved it!
But I'll be happy when another comes!
So, take your time! Let it be great! I'll see it then!
But I wonder what happens with the Marauders Map! Hmmmm...

ANd the mystery continues, How will Sirius get the map out of Harry's hands? What happens when Harry sees Sirius sleeping in the bed right next to him?

Lissy! Excellent post! Interesting. I'd completely forgotten about the Marauder's Map. But I cannot wait to see what happens when Harry uses it. And Jan has a good point. What was in the rest of Dumbledore's letter? Once again the parts with Colin, Dennis, Lavender, and Parvati make me laugh.

Nice post! I'd totally forgotten about the Marauder's Map too. Great idea! Will he try to get the map from Harry? What if he gets caught? When will Harry find out the truth? Will he find out at all? Too many questions... so get another post up quickly!!!!!!

I liked the bit about Fred and George calling Ron their Hogwarts connection - very in-character for them! In fact, everybody was so in-character I felt like I was reading canon sometimes!

I loved that part - it was so touching. And so Harry.

AS much as JKR mentions that Harry and James were so alike in the books, I never really actually saw the similarities (I’m just as stubborn as Siry). However, Harry is so cool and free with his words. I mean he seems so un-attached yet so wantable and mysterious. Maybe it’s just because we don’t know the crazy thoughts that go through his mind before finding the right thing to say. Anyhoo, he’s written awesome! (Sadly some stories are making me hate Harry’s personality…they just don’t know how to write him)
