Chapter 1: Morning Energy

"Caitlin, time to get up. We've got things to do today" shouted a tall, 30 year old woman from the bottom of the stairs. 11 year old Caitlin Moretti woke up at the sound of her mother's voice and made her way out of her messy bedroom and into the bathroom smiling down at her mother as she passed the top of the long, spiralling staircase. Today was going to be a good day and Caitlin was looking forward to it. She had got her letter for Hogwarts explaining what she needed for the school year ahead and was going to get her books and uniform. She was particularly looking forward to getting her wand. She'd never had one before and her parents had never allowed her to use theirs. It was an exciting new adventure.

Caitlin walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror at her reflection and smiled. Many thoughts swam around her mind. Was she going to fit in? Were her professors going to like her? Was she going to be able to keep up with the work load that was going to follow throughout the years she would spend at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? She was sure she would be able to. Caitlin was a clever young lady and she'd been told a lot about the castle. About its amazing views. About how when sitting by the lake, her reflection would smile back up at her. She was excited for her new adventure and eager to get there.

Finally, Caitlin was all washed and dressed and downstairs in the kitchen waiting for her breakfast to be put in front of her.

"So are you looking forward to going to Hogwarts?" Michelle, Caitlin's mother asked. Caitlin smiled and nodded.

"Yes I am. It's going to be an exciting new adventure for me and I'm looking forward to making new friends whilst I'm there" Caitlin replied eagerly. Michelle smiled and nodded. There was the enthusiasm she admired about her youngest daughter. Caitlin turned her head to look at her father as he walked past brushing his hand over her shoulder softly.

"Morning, dad" she said to him eagerly.

"Morning, sweetheart" Gareth replied in the same eager manor. He was particularly happy to see his daughter. He hadn't seen her the night before because he was working late and she had already gone to bed.

"How was work?" Caitlin asked curiously.

"Work was fairly boring. I wish I was at home with you guys though" Gareth replied as he sat down opposite his little princess. He pulled Michelle closer and cuddled her gently. Michelle looked down at him and smiled before getting Caitlin her breakfast.

"So what time are we going to Diagon Alley, mum?" Caitlin asked enthusiastically, trying to avoid it getting a little too much. Was enthusiasm getting too much a bad thing? She didn't know but she was going to avoid it just in case.

"We'll go in a few hours. That way we can have lunch whilst we're there and make a day of it" Michelle replied putting a bowl of cornflakes in front of Caitlin. She sat down with her own breakfast and a cup of coffee and put a glass of orange juice in front of Caitlin who was already tucking into her breakfast.

Chapter 2: Diagon Alley

As she walked down the street, taking in the energy of the place and stopping every so often to look in a store she thought was interesting, Caitlin smiled brightly. She was getting closer to Ollivanders. Each step she took, she was one step closer to getting her very first wand. To others, it wasn't that exciting but an 11 year old like her, it was the most exciting part about walking down Diagon Alley. The least exciting, getting her school robes. Caitlin despised getting her robes fitted. But she had to have it done. Otherwise what was the point in even boarding the Hogwarts Express if she didn't have her robes for the year.

"Caitlin, snap out of it. We're going into Ollivanders last" said Michelle as they walked straight past the shop. Caitlin's smile deteriorated as she watched the shop pass by as if she had stopped but the rest of the street was moving. She wasn't happy with that idea. She wasn't happy with it at all. But she couldn't change that. Could she.

"So where are we going first?" asked Caitlin hopeful it wasn't Madame Malkins. She'd beg not to go there first if she had to. Although she had a sneaky feeling begging wasn't going to work. And neither was hoping. She knew exactly where they were going first just from the first letter that slipped from her father's mouth.

"Madame Malkins. Its best to get your robes first. Then its done out the way" answered Gareth. And he didn't care if Caitlin wasn't happy with the idea. Caitlin huffed and followed close behind her parents, dodging the other people as they almost collided with one another. Jheez Diagon Alley was busy today. But then there were loads of students getting the stuff they needed for the school year ahead.

"Caitlin, stop being so grumpy. Or else we won't go into Florean's" said Michelle as she looked back at her upset daughter. Caitlin immediately looked up and forged a smile. Anything to be able to go to Florean's. Not going there was like going a year without water. It was impossible. Well, almost impossible.

"First mention of an ice-cream parlour and she cheers up. Marvelous" said Gareth sarcastically to Michelle.

"This is Caitlin we're talking about" replied Michelle. Caitlin's jaw dropped.

"Excuse me, I am still here you know" shouted Caitlin exasperatingly.

"Yes, we are aware of that young lady" replied Michelle and Gareth simoltaneously. Caitlin sighed and continued walking, her mood deteriorating with every step closer they got to Malkins. She really wasn't going to enjoy this. She just knew it. How could she enjoy standing around with someone putting pins in her and measuring her up?

"Come on, Caitlin. We don't have all day" shouted Gareth from the shop door. Caitlin looked up at her waiting parents. They were there before her? How did that one work? She was walking at the same speed as them. Or was she? Apparently not. Caitlin upped her speed and finally reached her parents and walked in behind them. It wasn't as bad as she thought it was. So why was she against going to Malkins? Now nobody would know.

Chapter 3: Old Friends

"OW!" screached Caitlin as she accidentally stumped her foot on something as she made her way round the shop looking at all the robes that covered the walls. But she couldn't have any of the pretty house allocated robes because she hadn't been sorted yet so she had to stick with the plain, boring, Hogwarts robes. First year robes. But as she understood, once she had been sorted, her robes would automatically switch to the house she was sorted into. Or so she had been told. She looked at her parents as they made they're way to the store owner who stood waiting with a tape measure. She must have been waiting for Caitlin.

"Come one over, my dear. I don't bite" said the shop owner. Caitlin smiled and walked over and stood by her parents a slight distance apart and let her arms fall to her side as she was measured for her brand new robes.

...

Finally done in Madame Malkins, Caitlin and her parents strolled down the street, brand new robes in hand. Well, that wasn't half as bad as she anticipated. That was good, right? It had to be.

Caitlin feasted her eyes on the young lady she had just almost collided with. She knew that face. She was in Diagon Alley? But she was a muggle. But then, of course, that didn't mean she didn't have magical abilities. Or so she was always told, at least.

"Megan?" asked Caitlin curiously as she watched the tall blond walk down the street having not recognised her. The girl turned around and smiled, now recognising Caitlin.

"Caitlin!" replied Megan as she quickly ran back toward Caitlin, arms held out ready to hug her. Now there was someone she hadn't seen in a while. But they had they're reasons. Megan had just gotten back off vacation in Spain, her tan deep. But it didn't effect the way Caitlin had always remembered her.

"How was Spain?" asked Caitlin. Megan looked at her parents and signalled for them to come over. Then she sat down on the closet bench leaving room for Caitlin to sit beside her.

"We're going to go for a coffee. Can we trust you girls to stay here until we get back?" Jake, Megan's father asked. Megan and Caitlin nodded simoltaneously, smiles plastered on there first year faces. Jake smiled and walked down the street with his wife, Leyla, and Gareth and Michelle.

Megan looked back at Caitlin and crossed her legs on the bench now looking Caitlin square in the face.

"Spain was great. I have photos" she replied. Caitlin smiled crossing her legs too. Anybody who didn't know them would have thought they were sisters.

"And what about your auntie and uncle?"

"They're doing great. Aunt Lucy is hoping to come over sometime in the near future so that should be great. They both asked how you are too" replied Megan enthusiastically. O how she'd missed catching up with her best friend.

"What about you? Did you enjoy your trip to the Lake District?" asked Megan. Caitlin nodded.

"It was great although it was a little chilly at times. But I guess that can't be helped. Other than that. I had a great time. The walks were amazing and the views even better" explained Caitlin. Unfortunately, she didn't have photos to show Megan. Well, not with her at least.

"So are you going to Hogwarts this year or do you have to go to Muggle school?" asked Caitlin.

"You, know thats a funny story. My parents thought that me being muggle born would mean I'd have to go to Muggle school but I got a letter from Hogwarts saying that I'm a student there. Its made my day" answered Megan excitedly. Was she kidding? How could she go to muggle school and spend an entire academic year without her best friend? It was near impossible and difficult to do. Neither Megan nor Caitlin knew ANYONE who was able to do that.

Chapter 4: Hogwarts Express

Now this was going to be one heck of a journey. Caitlin turned eagerly at her parents and jumped with excitement. Yeah, she was blatantly excited to be going to HOGWARTS!

"Someone needs to calm down a little. You'll be sending us letters before long asking to come home" said Michelle, staring at her excited daughter. Caitlin shook her head.

"No I won't. I won't need to. I'll be home at Christmas. Won't I?" replied Caitlin. She sure hoped she was going home at Christmas. She couldn't bare an entire academic year without spending Christmas at home. That was impossible even for someone as excited as her to go to Hogwarts.

"We'll see, Caitlin" said Gareth. He knew Caitlin all too well. The girl never went a while away without begging to come home at least once.

Finally at the barrier between platform's 9 and 10, Caitlin turned to her parents and hugged them quickly. Before her parents could even begin to say bye, Caitlin was gone. She'd found herself on Platform 9 3/4 dodging eager students. Some older, some her age. Well, mostly older being as there were over 200 older students and even less new students. And amongst everyone, Caitlin couldn't find Megan anywhere. She must be on the train already. Or maybe she hadn't crossed the barrier yet. Caitlin wasn't sure so instead, she boarded the train in search of her best friend.

"Megan, where are you?" asked Caitlin quietly to herself as she searched up and down the train, dodging students and attempting not to collide with others. Well, Megan obviously wasn't aboard yet. Caitlin shrugged and went to find an empty compartment.

"Do you mind if I sit with you?" asked a voice from the door of the compartment Caitlin was in. Caitlin looked up at the rather cute looking boy and nodded, a smile apparent on her features.

"Sure, go ahead" replied Caitlin sweetly. The boy smiled and sat down opposite her taking note of how old she looked. She looked around his age.

"I'm Alexander" said the boy nervously.

"Caitlin. It's a pleasure to meet you, Alexander" replied Caitlin politely holding her hand out for Alexander to shake. Alexander smiled again and shook Caitlin's hand.

"The pleasure's mine" said Alexander in the same polite manor. "So, what house are you hoping to be sorted into?" he added.

"I'm not really fussed. As long as I get along with the other students in my house, I'll be fine" replied Caitlin.

"Me too. You're like the only person I've met so far so I'm kind of hoping we're in the same house" explained Alexander. Caitlin smiled. Well that was nice of him.

"We can only wait" replied Caitlin. She looked up when she spotted someone stood at the door out of the corner of her eye.

"Finally. I've been looking all over for you" said Caitlin.

"I've only just boarded the train. I was busy talking to some girl on the platform" replied Megan.

"I searched the platform and the train" exclaimed Caitlin.

"I'm sorry. But I'm here now" replied Megan. "Who's your friend?" she added.

"I'm Alexander" said Alexander cautiously. Wasn't this supposed to be a conversation between him and Caitlin?

"Nice to meet you. I'm Megan" replied Megan, her eyes narrow as if telling him to stay away from her best friend. Well this was awkward.

"So what house do you want to be in?" asked Caitlin to Megan.

"Slytherin. Simple as" answered Megan. Caitlin raised her eyebrows. Now that was rather straight. But she'd suit that house down to the ground. Caitlin shrugged and sat back. The awkward silence had left them all with nothing to say to each other. Caitlin was sure Megan had made Alexander feel like he wasn't supposed to be there.

Chapter 5: Sorting Hat

Finally. The Hogwarts Express had arrived in Hogsmeade. Now for the rest of the journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Caitlin got off the train eagerly. She felt the need to rush so she could get to the carriages to take them to Hogwarts. But they wouldn't leave without every student. Would they? She hoped not. She didn't want to be late on her first day. And it was extremely dark out. She didn't like the dark. Especially not when they were in the middle on nowhere with no way home and water and cliffs all round.

"This is so exciting, isn't it?" said Caitlin as she walked toward the carriages, Alexander and Megan walking close by her.

"This year is going to be amazing" replied Alexander, also getting a little bit more exicted with every footstep closer to the carriages they got.

"O please, it's just another year at school except we'll be learning magic instead of normal Maths and English" said Megan not so excitedly. Yeah, she was a complete kill joy. She was about the only person who wasn't excited. Caitlin and Alexander looked around at the many people walking toward the carriages behind and in front of them. Yeah, they were all excited. Why was Megan the odd one out?

"Why do you always have to be the one to ruin everything?" asked Caitlin. She was a little angry at Megan's lack of interest. It wasn't nice to knock your best friend down and her new friend.

"Because it's just another school" answered Megan.

"Just another school? O contrair, this is possibly the best school IN THE WORLD" replied Alexander.

"Seriously? Best school in the world? It's not even a proper school for crying out loud. It's. A. Castle" said Megan with a raise of the eyebrows and patronisation clear in her voice. Alexander scoffed and continued walking. Well he wasn't going to be interacting with her much this year, was he?

"Which makes it all the more interesting" replied Caitlin, her excitement still getting stronger. Megan rolled her eyes and fell behind, her interest failing to be as high as Caitlin and Alexander's.

...

"Good evening, students. I trust you all had a good summer. Now, this year we have a few changes in staffing. We also have some new students with us. We have our new first years. And I believe we have a few new students in the highers years too. Now, I would like to begin the sorting" said the Headmaster from his antique owl mounted stand. The students in the Great Hall all cheered for the new first year students.

"Caitlin Callahan?" said Professor Desirie, the Potions master. Caitlin turned and looked at Megan and Alexander and took a deep breath before sitting on the stool beneath the Sorting Hat.

"Hmm. I sense you are very courageous and ambitious. However, you have a cunning streak in you. You may prove to be a difficult one to place. I think it will be......GRYFFINDOR"" said the Sorting Hat. A smile shone profoundly on Caitlin's features. The house she so desperately craved. Though she wouldn't have minded had she been sorted into one of the other houses. She jumped off the stool and made her way over to the students who were cheering at the Gryffindor table. She was given several pats on the back as she made her way over and several once she had taken her seat beside a slightly older girl. Second year maybe.

"Alexander Braxton" said Professor Desirie. Alexander took a deep breath and made his way to the sorting hat. Sitting underneath it, he looked nervously at Caitlin who appeared to be hopeful he was sorted into Gryffindor.

"Ahhh. A nervous one, we have here. Hmm. Where shall we put you? No doubt about it. It'll have to be........GRYFFINDOR"" said the Sorting Hat. Alexander smiled cheerfully and made his way over to the Gryffindor table and sat beside Caitlin, his smiled growing as people greeted him into the house. Lots of older students congratulating both Alexander and Caitlin on being sorted into Gryffindor.

"Megan Vandawalker" said Professor Desirie. Megan glared over at Caitlin and Alexander and sat under the sorting hat. She watched as Alexander and Caitlin stared nervously at her, their expression telling her everything.

"Now....A cunning one we have here. You'll do very well in.......SLYTHERIN"" said the Sorting Hat. Caitlin sighed and watched as her best friend made her way over to the Slytherin table. Megan's smile seemed to be bigger than Caitlin had expected. That seemed like it was going to be the end of their friendship. But it couldn't be. It just couldn't be.

Chapter 6: Start of Term Feast

Wow! So much food. How could anyone consume so much? But then there were lots of students to consume it all and by the end of the night almost all of it would be gone. Caitlin smiled round at Alexander helplessly. Dang he was cute. But it wasn't likely that she'd admit she though that. Why should she? It wasn't like he'd think she was cute too.

"Can I ask you something?" asked Alexander. Caitlin nodded but inside she was screaming for find out what he wanted to ask.

"Why does Megan despise me so much?" asked Alexander, desperate for an answer. Caitlin shrugged.

"I don't know. Probably because we've became friends and she's frightened of losing me as a friend" explained Caitlin. It seemed like a reasonable explanation. Maybe.

"Oh right! Well I'm not going to take you away from her" replied Alexander.

"I know that. It's just, she's kind of lucky to be a student here. And I don't think she's going to survive in Slytherin with her blood status" explained Caitlin.

"How come?"

"She's a muggle born. Slytherin's don't take too kindly to it" whispered Caitlin making sure that nobody from Slytherin heard her. But she wasn't careful enough. A Slytherin boy was in earshot. And he didn't look very impressed at all.

"You'd better be careful what you say around here, Gryffindor" said the older boy, his pale face close to Caitlin's slightly darker face. She gulped.

"But I didn't say anything wrong" said Caitlin as she trembled in the presence of the platinum blond haired boy.

"Telling someone that a first year in Slytherin is muggleborn in the presence of another Slytherin IS doing wrong" explained the boy before he walked off back to the Slytherin table. Caitlin looked at Alexander, fear in her brown eyes.

"I think we should steer clear from that boy" she told him as she glanced over at the Slytherin table where Megan was in converse with other Slytherin students, all of them but that one boy oblivious of her blood status.

Chapter 7: Second Floor Corridoor

"What do you mean we can't be friends? We've been friends since we were children, Megan. What house we're in shouldn't change that" said Caitlin desperately as she walked down the second floor corridor with her 'best friend'. Megan turned to look at her and sighed.

"It just...It just won't work. We're both going to make a new group of friends and they'll be too different" said Megan. Caitlin looked down at her kicks and scuffed the floor.

"You have that Andy kid anyway or whatever his name is" added Megan.

"His name's Alexanda and you're my best friend. Or that's what I thought you were anyway" said Caitlin.

"I'm sorry, Caitlin. And besides, who says I can trust you? I mean, how do I know you're not going to go around telling everybody I'm muggleborn?" asked Megan.

"Because I won't. I know how difficult that will make your life here" answered Caitlin truthfully as the two of them neared the end of the corridor.

"Sorry" replied Megan before disappearing out of sight. Caitlin sighed and walked toward the wall, tears fighting to fall down her rosy cheeks. But she was determined not to let them fall. It was a sign of weakness. And besides, if anybody else was to walk down the corridor, she didn't want them to see her crying. She leant against the wall and slid to the floor, her hands in her lap. She sat biting her trembling bottom lip and picked at her finger nails taking the remaining specks of scarlett red nail varnish that covered them.

"Well, well, well. Callahan's all on her lonesome" said a vaguely familiar voice from the shadows. Caitlin looked up to see who it was, it could only have been three people. She only knew three people but it wouldn't be Megan, the voice was male and it most certainly couldn't be Alexander, he wouldn't call her by her last name. He didn't even know her last name, did he? So it must have been that Slytherin boy with the platinum blonde hair and cold blue eyes.

"How do you know I'm not waiting for someone?" asked Caitlin as the boy got closer to her.

"Because if you were you wouldn't look like you're about to cry" replied the boy.

"How observant of you" said Caitlin playfully. The boy sat down beside her.

"Adam Marx, by the way. And of course I'm observant. How else am I supposed to spot the cute girls around here?" said the boy now known as Adam. Caitlin giggled. Though she wasn't quite sure why. He hadn't exactly given her a very good first impression to go on.

"I'm guessing you already know my name. But how?" said Caitlin.

"Your name's Caitlin. And word gets around" replied Adam. "I may seem like a stereotypical Slytherin but I'm actually not that bad. It's just best to act that way around certain people" he added. Caitlin smiled slightly. He really wasn't that bad. And she kind of liked that about him. That and he was incredibly cute.

"So in that case, why aren't you in Gryffindor or one of the other houses?" asked Caitlin curiously.

"I never said I couldn't be cunning" replied Adam in a kind of serious-joking voice. Caitlin smiled slightly and giggled again.

"But you seem nicer than my own supposed to be best friend"

"I guess that's just the way it works. I heard Megan say that your friendship groups would be different. That's not neccessarily so. I thought that too but I have friends in all houses. And now have another to add to the list. You should hang with me sometime. Who knows? Maybe you'll find yourself in a friendship group you'll grow to love" explained Adam intently.

"Thanks. I might take you up on that offer" smiled Caitlin. Adam smiled and nudged her slightly.

"Glad to hear it. Wouldn't want you being a stranger after this chat"

"I won't be" replied Caitlin.

"Good" said Adam. "What class have you got?"

"Umm, potions I think" answered Caitlin.

"I'll walk you to the classroom" said Adam.

"Thanks" smiled Caitlin. Adam returned her smile and stood up. Holding his hand out for her to take, he smiled more. He'd never noticed how pretty she actually was until he was looking straight at her.
