| | Middle Cars If you suffer from FOMO or just want to be in the involved with everything, then the middle passenger cars of the train are for you. Just like the other cars, a long corridor provides access to the many compartments, each labelled with a letter, available for you and your friends to hunker down in until the train has come to a complete stop. Cushioned seats and large windows, allowing perfect views of the British scenery on your journey, await.
Well, what are you waiting for? Slide open a compartment door and make yourself at home. Place any of your belongings not in the luggage car on the racks above you. Chat with your friends about what your summer plans, enjoy munching on the snacks you bought from the trolley lady, get ahead of the game by exchanging addresses, or take a long nap as the train travels over numerous hills and mountainsides. Whatever you do, exhibit your best behaviour -- the prefects will be regularly patrolling the corridors and poking their heads inside your compartment to make sure you are doing so.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Maddox Robicheaux Slytherin First Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Felicity Morose Hufflepuff Fourth Year | Open! mweheheh The Gay Agenda™< >Homiesexual uwu Too many children.
As the train hurried away from the station Maddox did his best to push through the onslaught of giggling students. Being so small was not working to his benefit, however. "Excuse me." All he needed was a completely free compartment and then everything would be fine, and he could sit in silence. He dragged his things through the middle cars, listening at different doors to make sure there was no one inside. One door even had a note specifying no one under fifth year was allowed, and he didn't even bother to try that one even though it was fairly silent inside.
Finally he found one that was unoccupied, and he dragged his stuff in and closed the door. He let out a huff, put his things away and plopped down on the seat closest to the window. Jane had packed him some snacks for the trip, so he pulled out a bag of crisps along with his tarot deck. He stole little chips in between practicing how to shuffle and cut the deck—he was still a bit clumsy, but had studied proper technique and was getting better. Every now and again a card would fly out onto the floor and he would have to go and pick it up. He noticed it tended to be The Fool. Interesting. |

Every now and again a card would fly out onto the floor and he would have to go and pick it up. He noticed it tended to be The Fool. Interesting. It felt as though her heart was trying to compete with the train in terms of speed. It wasn't beating anymore, it was vibrating. Her eyes were wide and on the cusp of tearing up.
This was all overwhelming.
First, there were SO many people - it was a real crowd on the platform and a very cramped train. It was incredulous for someone who only just learned witches and wizards really existed. Children! In the hundreds! All in one place! And Valerie was jostled to and fro by strangers who were to be her peers.
Second of all, there was this trunk. So many thick school books (spell books!), a cauldron(!), ingrediants, robes, bits and bobs.....they all added up to a weight quite beyond what Valerie was independently capable of.
And that was the third thing. She was alone. It didn't occur to her until the train pulled away from the station, but she was flooded with the realization that she won't see her mom again until Christmas. Every face was new. She had to put her trust in complete strangers. And she had to make friends...
Could she make friends? Would anyone like her? Would she like anyone? What if witches and wizards were notoriously unkind? Rude? Mean, even? What if they all had some knowledge that she did not, and she was outcasted because of it? Because they did. They seemed to. Everyone seemed more comfortable in their situation than she felt.
Valerie drew a deep breath with every five inches she was able to haul her trunk. She tried to look for somewhere to sit by herself, so she wasn't bothering anyone who didn't want her there, but as she lugged the trunk to this compartment, she just didn't have the strength to go farther. Luckily, it seemed there was only one other person there. And a younger boy, too.
With another deep breath, she knocked on the doorframe and hoped he would allow her to join him.

With another deep breath, she knocked on the doorframe and hoped he would allow her to join him. Maddox, of course, knew he couldn't be alone forever. Not on this train full of hundreds of kids. But he had at least hoped that whoever made their way to his compartment would be calm and quiet.
And then there was the big bundle of nerves he could feel coming from a mile away. As the girl stopped at the door of his compartment and knocked, he looked up at her with his wide doll-like eyes, grabbing a chip from his bag and eating it. He wanted to simply watch her and wait for her to keep shuffling along, but he did feel a little bad to see her struggling. He realized he had some guidance in his hands, so maybe he should let the cards decide. He fanned them out, picked one and flipped it over. The Devil, reversed. Releasing old bad habits. He sighed and pursed his lips.
His eyes went back to the girl, flipping the card around so she could see it, then looked to the seat across from him and went back to practicing shuffling his cards. That was the most acknowledgement she would get on the matter, but she was free to sit if she would like. |

That was the most acknowledgement she would get on the matter, but she was free to sit if she would like. The butterfly in her stomach fluttered when the boy made eye contact. But when he returned to playing with his cards, it sunk. He was ignoring her. How disheartening.
Valerie took a deep breath, preparing to haul her trunk further down the train, when he suddenly looked at her again. She had no idea what that card meant, and was even taken aback that it wasn't a standard set of cards. She'd never seen something like that before....it must be magic!
She managed the smallest of smiles through her nerves as she dragged her trunk into the compartment, obliviously blocking the door of any more newcomers. "thankyou," she said as she sat down.
She watched the boy for another moment, then pulled out her book, realizing he wasn't going to start conversation. That was...okay. They didn't have to become fast friends or anything. She was just happy to have found a seat.

She was just happy to have found a seat. Part of the reason Maddox wished he had quiet and calm students in his compartment was because their minds were usually also pretty quiet, an important thing for him as a Legilimens. Maybe is was just because of her nervousness at the moment, but Maddox was catching most of what she was thinking. He needed more practice closing off his mind, but he was getting there.
He didn't acknowledge her thanks, and simply went straight into it. "Tarot cards aren't inherently magical." Most tools of divination aren't, unless they've been charmed. Muggles can even use them and be accurate half the time. There was something about divination that Maddox was curious about, the way that the magic isn't inherent to the item. You don't need to cast a spell for it to happen, either. The fact that it's such a strange, fringe sect of magic...he wanted to understand more about it. "You're not very familiar with magic." Not a question, a statement. |

Not a question, a statement. It took her by surprise, his comment about the tarot cards. Yes, she had wondered about them only a moment earlier, but she didn't put the two-and-two together, so his comment on them seemed quite random.
As for his other statement....Was that a bad thing? Was that something she shouldn't share? Valerie had no idea how many others on this train were as clueless about magic as she had been. That all these people had magic powers and were living amongst her all along....
She simply shook her head.
