The Interviews Part of the Headmistress' job was conducting interviews for open staff positions... and this term, Annie had quite a few interviews to conduct. Not only did she have to replace two of her deceased professors, but she also had to find replacements for all the jobs held by her departing staff members. And Merlin knew how many jobs Vindictus had had. Sighing as she settled into her pink desk chair, Annie pulled a stack of parchment closer to her and gave Gingersnapple's head a rub. Yes, the fat orange cat was indeed back in the castle. Good riddance to whoever interviewed with her. If they knew what was good for them, they would mention how much they loved cats. First up? The Deputy Headmaster job. And Joesphina Hadley was first on the list. Annie jotted her name at the top of her parchment and then set the quill up on its point and charmed it to write her thoughts as the interview went on. Then she called out, "Come in!" in case Hadley was here. Which she should be, as it was time... |
Josephina had never before been so nervous for anything. She wasn't even this nervous when Tate had interviewed her for the Arithmancy Professor position. Perhaps it was his calm and collected demeanor or maybe it was the fact that Anastasia was her former housemate; her sister's fellow graduate. Plus the woman always seemed to be judging. A woman thing, perhaps? The best thing about this was that at least the interviews were done at the start of the vacation. Which might be good ....or bad. Inhaling and exhaling, she glanced down at her attire and self-consciously smoothed some hair behind her ear just as she reached the gargoyles. It was just about time .... and then , she heard it ... it was now or never ... With one last deep breath, Fina pulled open the office door as her hazel eyes immediately fixed upon the redhead sitting behind her desk; waiting. "Morning, Headmistress." |
Quote:
She waited for the Arithmancy professor and Hufflepuff Head of House to be seated before continuing. "Care for a cup of tea? Coffee? Water?" Annie did have an army of House Elves at her disposal, and now that the castle was empty... they should be able to respond even more quickly. |
Quote:
"Some tea would be lovely, thank you." She agreed. Something to calm her nerves, as coffee would no doubt accelerate them. |
Emily said Tinka would come :3 Quote:
Back to the interview. Annie gestured for Josephina to help herself and settled back into her seat, eying the few notes that had been jotted down on her parchment so far. "This was just your...seventh term, Josephina, is that correct?" She looked back up and made eye contact with her former House mate. "And how do you think it went, all things considered?" |
Quote:
Leaning forward slightly, she poured herself a cup of tea, adding a little cream and sugar, stirring it twice clockwise. She placed the spoon carefully back on the tray as she sat back in her seat with the teacup. "This was just my eighth, actually," she corrected quietly, gnawing her lower lip slowly. All things considered, how did she think it went? "Hogwarts is a place of trust and friendship. Learning and unity. No amount of danger can take that away from us," she began. "So when you ask how it went, considering all the .... excitement and dramatics and deaths, learning still happened. Friendships still were broken and formed and blossomed." |
okay i really sleep now? Quote:
"'Learning is the most important thing that happens at Hogwarts,'" Annie seemed to quote. "Would you agree or disagree with that statement, Josephina? If you disagree, what IS the most important thing to happen at Hogwarts during a student's time here?" |
yes, yes, you do ;). so do we *coughsupsnot* Quote:
Listening to the quote the redhead recited, she pondered it a moment. Was that a trick question? "I ... agree to disagree," Fina seemed hesitant. "Learning is definitely an important aspect, but as I've seen students start as first years and graduate, one of the benefits of seeing that is ... knowing that respect is the most important thing that happens at Hogwarts." |
Quote:
"So you would prefer, then, that students graduate with empty heads BUT as respectable people who know how to respect others, rather than as intelligent and capable young adults? Interesting, hmm." The quill started writing again, and Annie took another sip of her tea, setting it down with a pleasant smile toward the former 'Puff. Perhaps she was playing Devil's Advocate with that question. Or perhaps... she was trying to rile Fina up. One never knew with this redhead. "So," she switched to another question, "what do you think the role of a deputy Headmistress should be? And what changes would you make at Hogwarts if you were my Deputy?" |
Quote:
No. That wasn't what she was implying. "You didn't ask what I thought students should come away with when they graduate here. You asked what is the most important aspect of being at Hogwarts." So in other words, she wasn't going to choose between respect or smarts; she didn't HAVE to choose. "I would prefer that students graduate with both. But let me amend that slightly; not only is respect important, but so is common sense. And I think those along with smarts, go hand-in-hand." Oh moving on though. "The role of Deputy?" She repeated, picking up her teacup again, as she considered the question. "Deputy Headmistress is not ... in charge of the school, by any means, but they are still responsible for handling both praises and complaints. They are the first person that the new first years meet and explain briefly policies at our grand school. They are there. Present." Changes? She would be allowed to make changes? "Any changes would have to be approved by you, naturally, and likely the Board. But hypothetically, one change I would hope for is greater unity among the houses. The staff. The students." |
Quote:
"Do you believe it is possible to teach something that should be common knowledge then, Professor Hadley? I would have thought that the definition of 'common sense' precludes it from being taught." Anastasia scooped Gingersnapple onto her lap and started petting the cat methodically, his loud purrs adding to the cacophony of the scratching quill. So she thought a deputy should just... be present? Well that would be something more than Max had done this term. Hmph. "And how would you achieve greater unity, Miss Hadley?" Go on. Add some meat and potatoes to your chicken broth. |
Quote:
What kinds of questions WERE these? But Annie was older than her, even if technically speaking she was only her sister's age. More importantly though is that Annie was her boss. Which meant that if she wanted to continue working here AND if she wanted the promotion, she had to persevere. She had to be honest as she could. "Unfortunately, Headmistress, common sense means that not everyone has it. And sometimes, it must be attempted to be taught." And sometimes all hope was lost. "So in some cases, it is possible and necessary to teach our students what should have been common knowledge." How would she achieve greater unity? Well then, this fiery redhead was not making these questions EASY, was she? "Well obviously not get rid of the houses, because that sort of competition and rivalry is good for learning, but," she twisted the teacup in her hands. "The school could do with some general Hogwarts pride. Any one given day, you will hear a Slytherin who is proud to be a Slytherin, or a Hufflepuff proud to be a Hufflepuff, but how common is it to truly here a student say they're a proud Hogwartian? They're more than apt to break it down, but general Hogwarts pride just seems ... rare. And yet it's necessary. So as far as achieving general unity, perhaps one day a week, we could go with casual Fridays, where students and staff ditch the houses and just show their pride for being a Hogwarts student. We could even go so far as to take points from any student who refuses to show general school pride." |
Quote:
Oh well. Anastasia was honestly over this question. She just shook her head and smirked at the Arithmancy professor instead of saying anything else on the topic, as her latest question was much more interesting. "I happen to agree with you - for the most part - on that question," Annie surprised herself by admitting. "I don't think negative reinforcement is necessary, however. I don't think taking house points is the way to encourage MORE house unity." It just seemed a little... backwards. Annie stole a glance at the clock hanging over the door and eyed her quill. "Do you have any questions for ME, Miss Hadley?" Because if not... well, they were done here. She did have five more interviews to conduct, after all. |
Quote:
"We were talking about school unity encouraging more of though, not house unity. For house unity, yes, I agree with you that taking house points would not encourage it." Mmhm. "But for encouraging school unity, for those who don't..." yea. She got the point. But what was that? Oh they were done. "No, no, I don't think so. Except that I look forward to hearing from you this summer." And that was all she was going to say on that subject. "And I'll see you in September." |
Quote:
"I look forward to welcoming you back to Hogwarts as well, Professor Hadley," she said kindly and offered the woman another handshake. "It's been a pleasure." |
Quote:
Taking the woman's hand, she shook it as well, as she rose from her seat and set the teacup on the tray. "Yes, yes, it has been. I'll see you in the end of August. Good luck." With you know, finding a Vindictus replacement mostly, since the man was a legend. "And I'll send Leanne your regards?" Surely the woman would remember her older sister, of whom she graduated with, despite the different houses. Leanne remembered Annie, at least. With that, the brunette turned and disappeared from the Headmistress' office. The woman had a schedule to keep to. |
Why was she so nervous?! Was it because she was going to be locked in a room with the red-headed banshee of a Headmistress? No. It was because this job opportunity was a once and in a life time kind of thing and she would never had dreamed she would be in this position just a few mere years ago. No, Calista Elwood was nervous because she couldn't See what was going to come of this interview. The large doors of the office opened and Callie smiled and waved smally to Josephina as she exited. Now was she supposed to go in or wait until Truebridge called her? No she would wait. The blonde stood there in her usual skirt, flowy shirt and bangles waiting. |
Leanne? Who the heck was Leanne? A momentary look of confusion crossed Anastasia's face but she didn't say anything, for the moment. She was still trying to figure out who Leanne was.... then something clicked. Leanne Hadley. Hadley, right, must be related to this Hadley. She still couldn't remember what House the other Hadley had been in but apparently she was no 'Puff.... "Right, sure, send her my regards." Annie's face resumed its fixed smile as she nodded at Hadley and closed the door. She made her way back to her desk, having closed the door just before Calista's arrival, and sat back down. Annie cleaned up the desk and tray of cookies and beverages, and then set up her quill and parchment again. She cleared her throat and folded her hands, waiting for the inevitable knock that would surely signal Callie's arrival. It never came. When the redhead looked down at her watch and realized that the blonde was 15 minutes late, she frowned and sent off her Nundu patronus. Where was she? Didn't she realize how valuable her time was?! Surely she hadn't left for the summer already... maybe she didn't value this opportunity the way she should have... |
Quote:
Finally it had been too much, she was going to miss her interview time. The blonde walked slowly to the door and rose her fist to knock when a silverly nundu patronus popped through the carved wood, the voice of an annoyed redhead emitting from it's mouth. Oh great. The Divination Professor opened the door slowly and entered the PINK office. The portraits around the walls seemed to be all sleeping and there was no Minister or Board member present just Anastasia Bunbury behind her desk. Gulp. "So sorry Headmistress. I was afraid you had company, didn't want to interrupt." |
Quote:
Once the blonde was settled, she gestured toward the tray and gave Gingersnapple a nudge away from it. "Would you care for some coffee or tea, Calista?" |
Quote:
Yeah this interview started off well. Callie nervously twirled her silver bangles and mermish bracelet from Everett as she waited for the woman to say something but not much was said just a 'sit'. So she sat. The usual bubbly woman was somewhat subdued, she didn't want to blow this and she was already behind becuase surely Fina had done well. Oh but she wasn't so late that she could still have treats? "Do you have any lemon-" she cut herself off before asking for her favorite beverage, lemonade and corrected herself. "Oh, I mean tea would be nice, thank." She poured herself a glass and took a sip of the warm stuff. Meh. Nothing compared to her lemonade. |
Quote:
"So," she settled back into her chair, "tell me why would like this position, and what you'd like to accomplish if you were to have it." |
Quote:
First question. Hmmm...not too bad. Callie chewed the inside of her cheek for a moment before opening her mouth to talk. "I would like the position of Deputy Headmistress because of the most general reason of wanting to give more back to the school that has already given me so much," she paused and looked the woman in the eyes. "As for what I'd like to accomplish, an understanding for the underrated subjects such as Divination, Ancient Runes, Astronomy and Arithmancy through more research and insentives placed on those lessons but also strengthening the idea of family and home that Hogwarts represents." She paused and thought a tad more on that before continuing. "As Deputy I will be sending the students their acceptance letters and I would like to start their firts impressions of Hogwarts as ones of acceptance, love, and understanding of their vaired backgrounds and stuff." The 'and stuff' was a token of her nerves but Elwood thought she did well enough. |
Quote:
"Good, very good," the redhead nodded. Let's see... second question... "What do you think is the most important thing for students to walk away from Hogwarts knowing?" |
Quote:
What thing....? Hmmm. Aha! "Well one of the most important things about schooling really, especially for Hogwarts rather than Wizarding University, is to learn as much as possible." A given really but she was going to elaborate, she took another sip of the dreadful tea out of habit and then continued. "What I mean to say is that the most important thing I would like students to walk away from this school knowing is their strengths and weaknesses. That is what will ultimately determine their career paths in the long run." And their jobs would be what would make them parts of society. Yep, that was all. Elwood smiled and took another sip of tea. |
Quote:
On to another question, then. "Where do you SEE yourself in ten years, Callie?" Get it? Cos she was a SEER? Har har har. |
Quote:
Until the woman spoke her next question. Calista looked at Anastasia for a moment trying to figure out if she meant what she thought she meant. Was she...making fun of her? "Where do I see myself in ten years? Well I would hope here, still teaching students. I don't have any plans to leave anytime soon," she said trailing off, still looking for any trace of a joke in the woman's eyes. "being Deputy Headmistress certainly would be a nice addition to that future." she added with a slight chuckle, her bangles janjling as she touched her hair. |
Quote:
"You don't have any personal or private goals, Calista?" she pushed the question a bit further. "Of course I understand that you really want this position, but I'm concerned that you might be TOO focused on your professional life.... we want well-rounded staffers who can connect with the students, after all...." She smiled kindly |
Quote:
Where to begin? I used to be homeless and wish to never go back there? No, definately not THAT! Ummmm... "Well as for the personal side of things, a family would be very nice. You have children, right?" She eyed the desk for pictures of them. "I just--ever since I was sixteen I've been alone, I want to mend that now that I'm back on the right path." She nodded and looked at the floor for a minute before slowly returning her gaze to the Headmistress. |
*shakes fist at SS* WHYYYYYYYY Quote:
And ah, there they were. "I have a son, yes, he is my pride and joy and the only child I will ever need in my life," Annie declared proudly, scooping a framed photo off her desk and passing it across to Callie. "I um," she paused as she tried to figure out all the possible MEANINGS behind the blonde's so serious answer, "I'm glad to hear that you're... on the right path now?" Awkward. Maybe this young blonde was not right for the deputy position after all... still, she would keep her in mind. "Regarding the position," she switched back to the reason they were there, "do you have any questions for me? Regarding it?" |
Seren had arrived early. Perhaps too early... and had been sitting in the waiting area for a reasonable length of time. She sat, waiting patiently for Callie to depart, but soon grew impatient. Heels clicking, she took the opportunity to meander about the space, observing the nick-nacks as she went. She stopped, just short of the door to Annie's office, surely it wouldn't be much longer, she could stand. She began flipping through her portfolio to pass the time and to ease the nerves. |
Quote:
"Thank you for your time, Ms. Elwood," she stated, standing up and showing Callie to the door. "Send Seren up when you come, would you?" She smiled politely and shut the door, retreating back to her desk to reset everything for the next interview. Well she was halfway done, at least. |
Quote:
"Good day Headmistress, I trust you've been well?" she greeted as she closed the door behind her. She had been about to call her Annie... but, at the present time it didn't feel appropriate. Seren's knuckles were white from gripping her portfolio, and after taking some measured steps she stopped in front of Annie and placed it on the desk before her. She'd never done this before. The whole profiling and skills statements. But she figured she'd done a half decent job of it at least. SPOILER!!: Portfolio |
Quote:
She settled back into her cushiony seat and flipped it open, taking her time to read while Seren helped herself to some refreshments. She read and she read and by the time she finished, she was making a pretty darn impressed face. "Wow," the redhead actually commented, setting the portfolio back on the table. "I'm... impressed, actually, with the thought and careful consideration you put into achieving this position." She allowed the other woman a rare smile and picked up her teacup. "So tell me, Seren, why do you want this job so badly?" The Cliff notes face-to-face real version, if you would. She'd read the well-worded polite version, and until now, had had no idea the Herbology professor was so... ambitious. |
Quote:
As Annie neared the end of it, and her facial expression changed, Seren felt like a burden had been lifted from her shoulders. Yes. This was a good thing... "Thank you," she replied somewhat softy, gosh she was starting to sound like a broken record. Returning the Headmistresses smile, Seren didn't even need a moment to think of how she might answer that question. "It's quite simple really. I love teaching... I love this school and I value each and every one of the students that pass through these doors. I feel that this is the next step for me, in ensuring that this school, under your leadership, thrives and that students are provided a safe environment in which to excel." She paused here.. not quite sure if she was voicing her intentions as best she could. "I want to be a part of this schools legacy..." Yes, legacy... that is what it was all about. Knowing that you've been a part of something significant, something long lasting, that you helped. |
Quote:
She settled back into her seat and nodded along at Seren's answers, seeming to agree with everything the other Herbologist said. She particularly liked the bits about 'under your leadership' and 'safe environment.' Also of note was the word legacy... which caused Anastasia to sit up some. "I like where you're going with this," the redhead encouraged her to go on. "What would you want your legacy to be, Miss Bentley? You already have an impressive roster of achievements here..." Published author, head of house, professor.... |
Quote:
It felt strange, being interviewed again. When she'd visited this very office for her interview with Tate, she wasn't the least bit nervous, and yet she still felt more comfortable at this present time. That was, perhaps, a testament to Annie's personable nature... to some degree. Seren smiled before taking another sip of tea, her throat had a tendency to shrivel like a fig under pressure, not that this was pressure. This was, going better than she had anticipated, she only hoped it would finish on this high note. Her legacy? ... HER legacy.. in all honesty, she hadn't considered it to be part of her own, not really... more of a ... whole-school legacy, and having a higher position would just be a bonus. Though, she supposed... "My legacy... is to be the best person that I can be. And I know that I have more to give to the school. I want to be seen as... a significant part of the success of Hogwarts, to be remembered by staff, students and parents alike for years to come." Something which she hasn't quite achieved just yet. Head of House was one thing, but Deputy was a whole other can of worms. "This position can open doors for me, it would provide me with opportunities to make a difference and above all, it would provide me with new challenged and new journeys which is important for self-improvement." |
Quote:
"What areas specifically are you interested in improving?" she asked curiously, taking a glance at the somewhat humorous |
Quote:
Areas to improve. Now this is something she had given a great deal of thought. "Well, firstly... and I think this is fairly obvious... is the safety of the members of the school." She was certain Annie understood this. What with losing two staff members to a plant... a stunning plant... but never the less. "In my time here at Hogwarts, the lives of students and staff have been threatened on more than one occasion. I realise that, Hogwarts, has always seemed to be under this.. curse, of sorts, but I do feel that there are more measures we could be taking to ensure situations, much like our previous term, do not occur again." There was more that they could be doing, and personally she would feel a great deal more comfortable if these issues were addressed. |
Annie once again started nodding as Seren answered her question. Well well, was there something they didn't agree on? The school OBVIOUSLY had a curse of some sort on it... she herself had debated asking Callie to give the place an exorcism, if she thought the Divination professor capable of such complicated wandwork.... "I agree," the redhead said. "Last term was such a tragedy, really, between losing that valuable plant..." she trailed off with memories of the gorgeous, exotic gift she had initially thought was from Ethan... its silky green leaves... friendly, long vines... bright pink flowers... oh and who could forget that heavenly scent? But to finish her sentence, "...and losing two of our staff members. What a shame." She let out a fake sigh and then snapped back to business, folding her hands crisply on the desk. "So how do we fix it? What else can we - you and I, potentially as the administrators of this school - do to increase the safety of our students and to decrease the occurrence of these weird semi-annual events?" |
Quote:
Seren had been expecting the next question, it was the most logical way to proceed. How could they, fix this. "Well, see... I've been thinking. I know it's practical for staff to patrol the corridors at night, but our efforts are largely expended on ensuring students aren't doing the wrong thing, and less so on other possible threats..." the ones that seem to just blend in to the untrained eye. "Perhaps, depending on the schools budget and additional funding, we could acquire security personnel. Someone who is trained for the job." Casually raising her teacup to her lips, she took a quick swig. "That aside, it probably wouldn't hurt to get someone to look into this.. curse thing, whatever it is. The number of incidents that occur at Hogwarts is not normal.." at all... "A historical inquiry might be of use... and if it's planned right, then the students could also learn a thing or two in the process." |
Quote:
"That's something to bring up with the Board of Governors, certainly," Annie agreed, giving her quill a pointed look so it would write this important bit down. "I also like the idea of a historical inquiry... perhaps that is something the Deputy Headmaster or Headmistress could lead, no?" She was picturing a focus group of both students, staff members, and historians going through all the files in the library... heh. As for her final question... "I think we're nearly done here, Miss Bentley," she smiled amicably. "Just a few more questions. What do you, personally, see the role of Deputy as being? What sort of tasks would you put yourself in charge of, if you were my #2?" |
Quote:
Interlocking her fingers, Seren placed her hands on her knees. Almost over, either time was flying, which was probably the case, or this wasn't as long as she'd expected. Now it was time for end game. This question had the potential to ruin her chances of acquiring the position. "My role, primarily, would be to assist and support you in any way that I can... but more specifically... tasks I would undergo on your behalf would include sending out letters to first years as well as welcoming them to the school, escorting them to the feast... keep students informed by posting any announcements you deem important for them to be aware of.. assisting you in the management of resources, parents point of contact and paper work." She paused here for a moment, other tasks, "... and of course to act in your position should you be away or unable to fulfill your duties." Was that it? No. Of course, "Not to mention the implementation of the historical inquiry.." There... that, summed it up... maybe. |
Mhmm. Agreed. Annie nodded again and started petting her cat, though most of her focus was on Seren as she answered her questions. Right, support the Head of the school... send out the first-year letters... be there in case anything happened to Annie... which nothing would, really, because she was too awesome to allow anything bad to happen to her. Satisfied with that answer, the redhead smiled in a final sort of way. "And do you have any questions for me, regarding this position?" Last chance! |
Quote:
Questions? ... About the position... "Well actually... is there anything in particular you would like to see, or expect from your deputy? Anything I haven't touched on?" |
Quote:
"What I'm looking for," Annie said carefully, slowly, "is a person different from me, who brings a fresh perspective to the school, who is organized, on time, prepared, and full of useful ideas." So far, Seren met many of those criteria. "I actually think a deputy should act in much the same way you mentioned. Perhaps they can also show leadership for the rest of the school staff, sort of organize the heads of houses and set up a chain of command." Then, perhaps, she wouldn't be called every time there was, say, a dumb ghost on the loose in the castle. Annie stood up, then, and offered Seren a handshake. "Thank you so much for your time, dear, I've truly enjoyed our conversation." |
Quote:
She'd been holding her breath without realising it, but as Annie slowly responded, she felt her chest expanding as air was carefully inhaled once more. To her relief, there wasn't anything of great value that she'd not addressed, so, in her point of view, this interview had been a success. Standing, Seren took the headmistresses hand and gave it a gentle but somewhat excited shake. It must be the adrenalin. "No, thank you for the opportunity, this has been a valuable experience. I look forward to hearing from you." Because, she would hear from her, even if she didn't get it, right? Surely. With a last smile, and a respectful bow of the head, Seren left her position at the desk and headed for the doors. Now it was out of her hands... but she had a number of things to consider, so she wouldn't be anxiously awaiting a formal response. |
Dash had arrived early enough to see Seren enter the room, which was completely fine. He preferred being incredibly early than being late for anything. He was dressed to impress of course, and his hair was not exactly perfected, but it was much neater than its usual state. While the other candidates may have been nervous Dash sat, cool and calm, with a thin small black folder in his hand. There was absolutely no reason for him to be nervous. An ex-Hit Wizard nervous over a simple an interview? Ridiculous. It was either he got the job or he didn't. One choice would benefit Anastasia and the school, and the other choice would just be silly. His eyes flickered toward the door as Seren left and gave her a small nod. Standing up, Dash entered the office, with not a care in the world. "Headmistress Truebridge." A thin smile crossed his lips as he made his way over to her desk. See he was being all polite too!! To think this was the woman who's coin purse he had almost stolen. |
Aww, such nice parting words from Seren. And she seemed excited, too, which was as she should be. "Same to you, dear," Annie shook her hand back and showed her to the door. She had just re-taken her seat behind the desk when in came her next candidate for the job. "Dash," Annie greeted the man who was already familiar with the office...and its password, apparently. She debated between giving him a formal handshake and all that and instead just gestured for him to have a seat. "Tea or coffee?" The redhead leaned over to give the pot a rap with her wand so it would warm up. |
"Tea please." Taking a seat in the chair that she gestured to, Dash glanced at the red head for a few seconds. He was trying to be good, professional, but he couldn't help but smirk. "You look well rested. As if you aren't about to have a mental break down anytime soon. I'm guessing the time away from ghosts have been good for you." Ghosts. Man eating plants. The whole lot really. Remember the folder in his hand he placed it on her desk. She could open it or not, either way he'd bring it up. It held only a single sheet of paper, with a few neatly written things. SPOILER!!: Folder |
"Well you can help yourself. It's on the tray." Annie blinked long and slow at him and adjusted her seat, giving the quill on her desk a little flick so it would start writing again. Oh how kind of him to compliment her. Clearly Dash had some ulterior motives here, and yep, there they were. Sneaking in an insult as always. "Hmm," was all she said at first, her eyes trailing to the folder on the desk, "Same to you, I suppose. You look presentable today." Today. Heh. The redhead flicked open the folder and read it in all of two seconds, then slowwwwly lowered it back to the desk. She wore an expression of paranoia for one brief second, mostly because the paper inside the folder reminded her of a hit list, and then her expression returned to one of neutrality. "And this is....?" Santa's naughty list? Do go on. |
Well what was the point of her asking if she was too lazy to pour it, and then hand it to him? What a rude host interviewer. Pouring his own tea into a cup, Dash took a few sips before putting his focus back on the task at hand. "Oh so kind of you to say that. You know Annie, I just don't know what I would do with myself if you hadn't noticed." There was only a very small hint of sarcasm, but she had basically asked for it. He watched, taking another sip of the tea as the folder was opened. What a lovely face there Miss Headmistress. Lovely in deed. "It is a list of things that as Deputy I would help to change in this castle." Because things weren't getting better, and change was needed. And quick. "The two names are the two staff in the castle that in my opinion need to be fired." He paused. Thinking about it for a second. " However, a re-training might be able to salvage one of them." The second one. Not the first. "As for the rest, they are the main areas in which I believe focus should be diverted to first, based on the strange occurrences within the castle in the last fifteen years or so." It was simply really. Dash leaned back in the chair, making himself comfortable. Did she need him to further explain? |
"I can think of many things you'd be able to do with yourself, Dash, with or without the presence of a woman." She allowed a slow smirk to cross her features before picking up her cat. She'd had enough tea time today. Now was Gingersnapple time, and the thick, fluffy cat with a squashed face eyed Dash up suspiciously from his perch on Annie's lap. "Bellaire, really, needs to be fired?" She raised an eyebrow. "What did she do to you? Insult your writing?" Annie had heard from a somewhat reliable source that that was a touchy subject for him. As for the librarian... "I'm assuming it's Leobald who needs a re-training, though it escapes me as to what he has also done to earn a place on your list." Annie was more amused by this list than anything. Surely the History of Magic professor wasn't to be taken seriously? Except his second list... seemed serious enough. "Explain." She said simply, stroking behind Gingersnapple's ears. "Security first. How would you improve it? What needs to be done? Why?" |
O_o it wasn't suppose to be this long. Oh really? With or without the presence of a woman? "Brilliant. Why don't you just mail me the list with pink paper and the works. then? Actually, Bellaire didn't know anything about him. Other than his name and that he didn't like her. So her not liking his books? Uh. Dash just blinked as if he were confused. "Insult my writing? I never even knew that Bellaire could read. Good for her!" On a more serious note. "She didn't do anything. That's the point. Professors like her, that demand respect yet refuse to give it back. You can't expect anyone, let alone students to take someone like her seriously." Dash gazed into his tea, as if expecting to see into his future! Only not, because he knew absolutely nothing about Divination. Perhaps if it had a tad of sugar? "A lot of things seem to escape you." It's what he noticed. That and the need for a bit of sugar in his tea. "Leobald's....reaction to what happened in the library this past term." Dash gazed up, staring directly at the Headmistress. His brows had come together and the man looked almost annoyed? "His first instinct was to put out the books. Wrong. That instinct was much to late. He should have like everyone else, been looking out for the students. Making any and every student was out of harms way. Since the whole thing was his fault. As a librarian in an academy of learning that is centuries old, the first thing he should have done within stepping foot of the library was to fireproof each and every book." It was not an EASY task, especially with such a spell, since it was rather difficult. But it was what he man SHOULD have done. "Had he done that, no books would have been lost, and less children's lives would have been in danger." He knew for a fact that the books had, had charms placed on them years before for the simple matter that Dash himself had attempted to use one of the books for kindling. The only problem was that after a few years the spell wore off. She wanted him to explain security? The History of Magic professor sighed. "Would you like a definition of the word?" No? Alright then, hopefully she was bright enough to know. "Hogwarts is....relatively speaking, safe. It is sound. The plant getting through was really just an outlier, because there would have been no problems had your brooch not gotten through. Anyways, no one can really break into it without someone knowing. Which is brilliant. The problem however isn't Hogwarts, it is the area around Hogwarts. Namely Hogsmeade. Much of Hogwarts history shows that any breech in Hogwarts security happens in Hogsmeade. It is why in 1993 when Dementors were assigned to the school they were also in Hogsmeade." The year before was far from the first time in which someone from Hogsmeade caused problems in the school, but he wasn't about the list every single time. "We need to find a way to secure Hogsmeade in order to secure Hogwarts from any outsiders." Dash shrugged, that was really the simplest ways to put it. He already had an idea how to carry out the plan as well, but again, it was not the time to go into that. |
iREPLY <333333 sorry if it doesn't make senseeeee Annie just wasn't even upset by that lame comeback, seeing as it was... well, LAME. She just gave Dash a sarcastic, 'really?' face that said he could clearly do better, and instead chose to comment on his comments. "So she just insulted you in general. I see." The redhead did put this in her memory bank though, that Bellaire was perhaps rude and disrespectful of her colleagues. Not that she knew anyone like that, of course She waited for his reply about Leobald and noticed Dash staring rather pensively into his teacup. "My tea is meant to be taken with a shot of firewhiskey, I should mention," she said with a soft chuckle, as though that were an inside joke. Well, it was, but only a different History of Magic Professor would get it. "Would you like some?" Look at how nice she was being to him. Just look at it. Wouldja lookit? Anyway, Annie reached into her desk and pulled out a small flask of the fiery drink, then just wound up shrugging and setting it on the tray instead. Who knew, she herself might need a nip of that by the time Lafay's interview rolled around. But back to Kitridge.... Dash had (in her opinion) over-analyzed the librarian's actions, but he did make a good case against the man. "So let me get this straight," she she held up her fingers to start ticking things off, "Leobald needs training, Sophia needs to be fired, and you need to be Deputy Headmaster so that you can make both of these things happen?" Oh what a lovely place Hogwarts would be if Scabior were in charge... *SNORT* But wait, there was more. "How are we to secure Hogsmeade, Dash?" she asked plainly, no trace of sarcasm or exasperation coloring her tone for once, just plain interest. "Do you have a plan? I realize it is an obvious problem area, as history has shown..." Which is what he had said, "but go on, I'd like to hear your course of action." Should he have one. |
"She didn't insult me at all. She didn't do anything." Dash repeated patiently. It must have been something about the hair colour that made it so hard for Bunbury's to listen. Taken with a shot of firewhiskey? He simply raised a brow. "It's not that horrible." Heh. The professor just shook his head however. It was far too early for firewhiskey. "Perhaps later." When they would be out celebrating his promotion. "Exactly." He smirked. Finally! it seemed like the woman was getting something. "I'd be an asset. Help you deal with the little problems that clearly Mr. Quidditch Legend did not help you with at all." And Bellaire and Leo were the 'little problems'. "You need me." Obviously. "Otherwise you would not have called me to look after the Slytherin's this term, or with help finding out about the mysterious ghost." Taking another sip of his tea Dash shrugged. "To be honest with you, doing anything at this point would be better than what has been done. Which is nothing. Having a meeting with all the shopkeepers, and perhaps getting them to place Sneakoscope's in all their shops would be an improvement." Once again he shrugged. "It's the little things, before we attempt to do anything big. Almost like trial an error." He thought it was simple and understandable enough, yet not everyone thought like Dash Scabior. |
"Then why does she need to be fired?" Bunburys might be deaf to what they did not want to hear, but Scabiors certainly were more stubborn than a box of rocks. Not that horrible. WHATEVER. Annie knew her tea was just right. Even Gingersnapple liked it, and he only liked SPECIFIC THINGS. The redhead petted her cat quietly, calmly for a bit, and then replied to Dash. "I do need you," she admitted, "but I don't necessarily want you. You need to convince me of why you deserve this position, Dash. What sets you apart from the other candidates, other than a certain.....attitude....unique to yourself?" She raised an eyebrow. The redhead paused to give a bit of thought to the Hogsmeade suggestion. "I think a meeting is certainly in order, as well as perhaps a neighborhood watch of sorts. We'll have to see what the Board of Governors can do for the school's security." Annie smirked. "It certainly shouldn't be a task left solely to us, the staff, who are so very busy trying to drill our various academic disciplines into the heads of some thick students." Would he agree? Annie waited for another Scabior-like comment. |
Scabior turned, just so he could look around the room for any device that might possibly be small enough to clean out her ears. Not able to find anything of that sort he turned back around. "As I said befor. She does not give respect but demands it. Having someone like that on staff is like standing next to an unguarded criminal. You never know when they are going to be set off but sure enough they will be." Yup. Also, "And I don't like he too much either." He said the whole thing matter-o-factly. Because both were true. The woman was not an asset to staff at all. Why did he deserve the position? Why? Dash sighed. He had been hoping that he could keep her talking long enough so she wouldn't ask that question. It was perhaps the most important and yet only question he could not figure out an answer to. "We often don't want the things we need. But we still need them as they are still good for us." Like . for exam. Shots. Discipline as a child. The list could go on. "Listen-" Dash leaned foward, no longer slouching in the chair, his face completely serious. "-I can't go on for hours telling you what sets me apart because frankly I have no clue. I do however know two things. The first thing I know is that you know for a fact that I will be completely honest with you. If you have a bad idea in regards to the school I will let you know if its a bad idea. Same for if it's a good idea-though I bet that will be more rare. As for the second? Well the second thing I know is that the school can not continue on like this, because frankly it's not safe. You and I both graduated from this castle, and honestly I want to have my son go here as well. But the way it is as the moment, there is no chance in hell that's going to happen. And I want to fix that." Dash shrugged. That was really all he had to say. What made him different? What made him better? Not much really. He was also smarter than the rest. But that was obvious enough. Thick students? "Last time I checked the amount of drilling you do is very limited." |
"And as I am saying," Annie was smirking because Dash seemed just SO INTENT on getting rid of Bellaire, who at least dressed better than Elwood, and thus did not deserve to be fired just yet, "what interactions with her have led you to jump to this conclusion? Did she SAY or DO something that shows she is disrespectful of others? You have to have proof before you fire someone, Dash. There are rules in place, contracts to be abided by." She shook her head and removed the cat from her lap, allowing him to stand on the desk between them. Of course Gingersnapple didn't want to stay there, so he did a flying over-the-head leap off the desk and beyond Dash's hair to sit by the door, as if cuing the end of the interview. But wait, there was more. Annie leaned forward too, her interest actually held by this answer of Dash's. For once he sounded... authentic, not at all lazy, or disinterested, or sarcastic. He sounded genuine, and she could tell from his answer that he DID have a heart, a caring one at that!!!! "You know, I have a son I'd like to have attend Hogwarts one day too," she said softly once he was finished. "And your reasons for wanting this job... for deserving it... seem genuine. So we'll have to see how my other interviews go. But I'll tell you," the redhead actually chuckled, "I think you are one of the most honest people at this castle, whether I want to hear your honest version of the truth or not." And even though she wouldn't directly tell Dash, he was more tolerable than some of the other candidates. With that, the redhead stood and made for the door too. "Right, drilling... I'm only in charge of disciplining, suspending, and expelling the worst of them, am I not?" Alexa Cambridge, anyone? "But you knew what I meant. And now I mean it is time for your exit, Mr. Scabior. Your favorite person, Mr. Kitridge, is next." Ugh that sounded weird to say. |
What interactions? Well the first and ONLY interaction he had, had with the woman. After that he had taken to ignoring her. But it wasn't the time to talk about that now, seeing as how his interview appeared to be over. Honestly was something that EVERYONE could expect from Dash. He could only nodd along to that in agreement. What? It was true. "I would love to see you attempting to expel someone." The woman couldn't do it. She had nearly gotten a head full of greys because of a little ghost. Standing up, Dash set his cup on her desk. Her mess now. "I guess I will see you-" Leobald? "You wouldn't mind if I hang around here for a bit would you? No you wouldn't." There's a good girl. Dash smirked before plopping down on a seat off to the side. "Let's hear what he'd have to say about the retraining." |
Leobald headed into the waiting area outside Headmistress Truebridge office well before the agreed upon time. He was oddly enough quite calm and collected. Normally he didn't like interviews of any sort but this one he only wanted to get started already and if he didn't get the job well then he had at least tried. Clad in dark red dress robes for the interview Leobald took a seat as he waited for whoever had been interviewed before him to come out, or for Headmistress Truebridge to come out and fetch him. Time flew by and as the clock past his interview time by a good 10 minutes Leobald figured he had to check that everything was all right with the headmistress. Something could have happened and she could need his assistance or Cece's even. Standing up he strolled over to the office door and knocked on it thrice. Hearing no 'come in' for a what felt like several minutes Leo pushed open the door and popped his dark mop-haired head inside calling "Is everyone all right in here?" His eyes drifted from the headmistress to Dash that was sitting to the side. "Good day.....Dash!" he nodded to the History of Magic man. "I hope I haven't interrupted your interview..." If he had then Leo would feel embarrassed. |
"No...." Annie started to say to Dash, meaning that no, she HAD already almost expelled someone, not that he would care, but.... then Leobald popped in. Oh my, now she couldn't scold Dash with the librarian here... and he was right on time for his interview too. The redhead sent a warning glare toward the History of Magic professor and gestured for Leobald to sit in front of her desk. "Mr. Scabior just had... something to finish here. Your arrival is perfect timing, actually," she returned to her own desk and got her quill going once again. "Please, have a seat. Help yourself to some tea or coffee." Gingersnapple didn't much like sitting near the door anymore. He wound his way through the furniture and came to sit on one of the chairs in front of Annie's desk, like he, too, was being interviewed. The cat looked over his shoulder toward the door, like he was waiting for the curly-haired man to follow suit. |
Speak of the Wizard! Leobald's head accompanied with his curls of doom popped into the office. "Leo, good day." Dash said with a polite nod and a small smirk. Eyes flickering to the Headmistress he nodded once more. Acknowledging the cue right away. "Right. Just finishing up." He would be through that door and on his way home in a mere matter of minutes? "Quick question Leo, how would you feel about being retrained? Excuse me- that is being the only person on staff to be retrained?" Hmm? He just wanted to know if the man felt like he deserved it or if he thought it was an insane notion. |
SPOILER!!: Annie & Dash Leobald stepped into the office fully as Mrs Truebridge gestured for him to take a seat in front of her desk and help himself to some tea or coffee. Passing Dash he followed the headmistress’s cat over to the chairs. He at first glance hadn't seen him there. Taking a seat in front of the desk in the empty chair not occupied by the cat, Leo poured himself a cup of steaming hot tea. He was about to taste the tea when he heard Dash’s question. Carefully setting the tea cup down on the desk Leo turned to Dash with a blank look. "Retrained? Retrained how and what for?" Getting a clear feeling where the question bottomed in Leo decided to face it rather than evade the subject. He responded calmly with a clear voice no hesitation or nerves visible as he let his eyes drift between the Headmistress and his colleague. "I assume you didn't agree with the way I handled the fire when it broke out in the library at the end of last term." "I acted as quickly as possible together with yourself, Headmistress Truebridge and a few other staff members to put the fire out, after Professor Cerulean had herded the student’s out of harm’s way and to the Great Hall. We managed to take the fire out before it spread to the other library areas which as you know took some effort." "In hindsight I should have fire-proofed every book, shelf and case and then the fire would have had no fuel to feed of. An error in judgment which I take full responsibility for and will work tirelessly to amend until every book, shelf and case in the library is fire-proofed." Leobald ended his little speech. He leaned forward and stroked the cat behind the ears for a moment before he busied himself with his tea. |
Annie was struck by how alike she and Dash were the instant the man addressed Leobald. She had to fight back a snort as she poured herself a fresh cup of tea and settled back into her seat. She was just going to sit back here and watch and listen to the two, even though it seemed there wouldn't be much to listen to. Leo obviously knew he'd made a few mistakes with the library fire, and the redhead gave him an encouraging nod as he responded to Dash. "I'm sure we all could have handled the library... situation better. But hindsight is 20/20..." the redhead smiled gently, though her eyes did flick to Dash at the same time. There was a certain naughty sparkle there, as though she were waiting for him to go on. Gingersnapple, meanwhile, started purring and bumping the librarian's hand. MOAR PETS, PLEEZ. Never mind if his nudges caused the man to spill a bit of his tea; HE WANTED ATTENSHUNS. |
Was Leobald perhaps a seer? A master in Legilimency? Most likely not since his mind was protected but the man really could have fooled him. Dash listened carefully, not interrupting the Librarian at all, and only choosing to response to the very last thing Leo said."Every book." He nodded. "Except for the ones, rare or common, that have already been destroyed thanks to you." Clearly his throat Dash nodded. He was done. He was. But before he left his eyes flickered back to the Headmistress. "Note how he still hasn't answered the question." Just saying. The question had been asked, and yet, no answer, just a tirade of the events that had taken place. "I'll see you both some other time." He nodded at each of them, before leaving the office. |
SPOILER!!: Annie & Dash It warmed Leo's heart a little to hear that Headmistress Truebridge didn’t place all the blame for how they had handled the fire on just him. He had acknowledged his mistakes and promised to amend his short comings. Wasn’t that enough? There were no grounds for a retraining then, were there? Sipping on his tea Leo waited for Dash to throw him another curve ball, but none came. His colleague just pointed out that he hadn’t answered his question entirely before leaving abruptly. "Bye Dash." Leo called after him. Settling into a comfy position in his chair, Leo stroked Gingersnapple behind the ears as he said to Annie sincerely from his heart. "I love the library and working with books and most of all helping the students with their studies and everyday problems. "If you feel that it's necessary then I won't object to being retrained. I just want to do what's best for the students and what would benefit them the most." His heart still ached for the books that had been destroyed even if Dash didn’t think so. Nothing in Leo's opinion was so heart-wrenching and sad as to walk into the reference section and seeing all the gaping shelves and burn marks. |
Annie had noticed. She also noticed that Dash seemed to be holding back some unspoken bit of anger... anger at Leobald? Herself? The cat? She had no idea, but she did return his nod. Once the door had closed, Anastasia avoided eye contact with Leo and instead read back on her notes. "I think...perhaps what is best for all the students could also be best for all the staff. A crisis in-service might be what we need." She paused and considered calling the DMLE for help for the briefest of seconds. That idea was quickly dismissed, however, once she remembered who was in charge of that horrid department. "I'll look into planning one of those for us... and if it goes fine, then one for the students as well." Perhaps there was some sort of outside service she could contact? She knew Muggles had self-defense courses sometimes offered at their schools and saw no reason why Hogwarts couldn't have a similar seminar. But back to the interview. "Let's talk about why you're really here, hmm?" Annie cut to the chase with a firm, mirthless smile. "Tell me why you want this job, Leobald." |
A black hooded figure came to the Gargoyle entrance. It began untying its robes at the neck, and then, let the hood fall on its shoulders. Hecate Lafay stood by the Gargoyle statue, admiring the intricacies of the stonework and removing her robes. She was early. Well, she was always early for appointments. Her long dark hair had a streak of gray cascading on the right side of her part. It was a side effect of the potion she'd received from the shaman in Africa. She'd tried potions and glamour charms to tint it the correct color, but nothing seemed to keep for more than an hour. It wasn't the only thing that was altered on the woman. Her left eye (the right, if you were doing the looking) had lost it's color. It was now gray too. It was as if a fog was trapped in her retina. It wasn't hindering in any way, she could still see, but it was as if someone tossed a thin netting over that side of her, and everything seemed more opaque. Oddly enough, Alexander found the gray attractive... that man was so odd... so she decided to stop looking for a way to hide these new flaws, and embraced them as her own. The Potion Mistress conjured up a dark green wing back chair... she wasn't going to sit on the bench children sat on when in trouble and stuck their gum all over it. *shudders* She folded her robes over the top of the chair, and sat down, crossing her legs. Her shoes were Christian Louboutin, and although she was wasn't someone for high fashion, she had fallen in love with the muggle red bottom black pump. This was the perfect day to wear them, no? Suddely she felt the familiar fur of her kneazle Mephisto on her ankle. The stupid creature had followed her from her quarters. As it jumped on her lap Hecate quickly, though gently, pushed him back down. "I don't want fur all over me right now... get out." But the kneazle didn't seem to want to leave and cuddled up at her feet. "Go back to the dungeons, Mephisto." She said again, but the creature just purred contentedly. |
We hope this makes sense.. It was a big relief that Dash had left the room since Leo had never really gotten a good grip on the man’s character. Dash was just hard to read and could be mean at times. Lifting his teacup again he sipped on it some more as Annie proposed a staff crisis in-service course if he got her drift correctly. "A crisis in-service course could definitely be what we need. I know I’d benefit from knowing how to act in a crisis. I guess it’s the ministry that arranges such courses?" Not that Leo was very knowledgeable about departments and such. He had read about muggle crisis courses but he had never seen any in practice. In a few seconds they went from crisis course to the REAL thing. The reason he was sitting in Annie’s office and drinking tea in the first place. Leo took his time to gather his thoughts. Placing his hands in his lap he looked up and met Annie’s gaze steadily. "I want this job because I want to contribute, and do my part in ensuring that the students get the best education they can get both in the classrooms and outside it since Hogwarts is their home away from home." He paused for a moment to drink some more tea. "Having my own childhood experiences with being bullied for my hair and my fear of going bald within these walls I know how important it is to have adults you can talk to and to feel safe amongst your peers. And that boils down to bridging the gap between the houses and creating more unity." "We could manage that by more fun activities that will let the students bond over house lines like a school pentathlon. And we as adults can be more available to them by say being more active around the castle and grounds and even having office hours just for dropping in. I know I wouldn't have bothered my head of house in my youth if he hadn't had such hours since i thought my problems weren't of interest to him." Leo finished off feeling emotionally drained. |
makes perfect sense! Sometimes Anastasia paid attention to the little sensors and knicknacks previous Headmasters had left behind in her office. Usually, she liked to know when the one that signaled someone was in her waiting area went off. Now, however, she knew who was waiting for her at the bottom of the stone gargoyles, and so she paid the vibrating buzzer under her desk no attention, none at all. She was still in the middle of an interview, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on Leobald's answers. "The Ministry has little impact on what goes on in my school, Mr. Kitridge," the Headmistress informed the librarian with a snooty little sweep of her head. He had the gall to think the Ministry would arrange staff in-services... were THEY in charge of Hogwarts? She thought not!! Perhaps a re-training WAS necessary for this soft, curly-haired man-boy! Hmmph! He did have a few good thoughts for the school, though they weren't also anything particularly shocking or novel. Annie nodded once he was finished speaking and fought the urge to ask him why he had been bullied for his hair. Was shiny, healthy hair looked down upon while he was in school, or was he wearing a toupee at the moment? Perhaps it had something to do with his name, LeoBALD....heh.... "I see," she said instead, "and you do have any other...... ideas for Hogwarts? What would you say is the most important thing we should focus on improving for the coming school year?" |
Somewhere in the office something buzzed but Leo paid it just a fleeting thought as Annie reminded him that the ministry had no impact on the running of the school. Feeling his lips dry up Leo took another sip of tea as he defended his previous comment. "I know that the ministry has little or no impact on the running of this school which I’m glad for headmistress. I just meant that they employ people that could hold the crisis course like aurors." Jeez. She didn’t need to bite his head off. Leo was well aware that the BoG ran the school along with the headmistress NOT the ministry. Ideas… "Other ideas could be to integrate the school subjects and hold more joint classes. I've heard that those have been popular amongst the students when they've been given. To offer career advice to the higher years so they know what subjects to continue taking for newt studies." He said slowly. "I think the most important thing to focus on this upcoming school year is the school pride and the relationship between the houses which at times have left more to wish for. We could improve on that by starting for example an inter house mentoring program where students gets to meet and spend time with students from other houses and do activities together like the pentathlon I mentioned before. And we should especially encourage first years to sign up since coming to a new place can be scary…" He trailed off. There were just too many ideas bubbling around in Leo’s head. |
Uh huh. Sure. "Well," Anastasia pursed her lips some, realizing that perhaps she had spoken too harshly She scoffed. Secretly, though, she would look into it. As much as she despised Wesley... he might know a thing or two more about defense and crisis and the like. Stupid man. Anyway, back to the real reason Leo was here. "Joint classes, career advice... those are some sound suggestions," the redhead nodded. Interesting that he also mentioned a need for inter-house unity. Hmm. The pentathalon idea though --- Annie wasn't so sure she could get behind that. It sounded like something athletic, and she just did not approve of teenagers sweating all over Hogwarts' halls. "I'll consider those ideas, thank you. Is there anything else you'd like to add? Any changes you would make as Deputy Headmaster?" Some of the other candidates had had a real plan of action, you know... |
Annie seemed to know what she was talking about in relation to who was suitable as a seminar instructor of a crisis course. Leo wasn’t going to argue or point out that the MLE head could send one or two of his employees to do the job he wouldn’t necessarily come himself. And why would he? He was probably a very busy man. Not that Leo knew or had ever met the man in question. "My first plan of action if I was appointed deputy headmaster would be to look over the security of the school and see in what areas we can make improvements together with the caretaker, since he knows the school better than anyone. After last year we have to become more vigilant and wary of what we allow to come into the school and how we act in a crisis situation. We need a safe and secure school to be able to focus our attention on academics and on fostering our student’s." Leo finished. He felt like he had gotten to say and share all his ideas which had been brewing since he started working for the school now almost 3 years ago. |
Oh, so now he was on to security, was he? Interesting. Interesting how he thought the caretaker would know a thing or two as well. "Have you ever met the caretaker, Mr. Kitridge?" Anastasia said as she rose from her chair. She headed toward the door. "He is... not the first person I would think of when it came to securing the castle and the grounds." No, she would think of consulting the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Never the librarian or the crazy caretaker. It was apparent to her, anyway, that this interview was over. "Thank you for your time, Leobald. Please send up Professor Lafay on your way out." Anastasia opened the door for him. Gingersnapple also sensed that the curly-haired man would be leaving soon, so he jumped from his chair to the man's lap for some last-minute pets. |
Blink...... "Erm, I can't say I have had the pleasure now that you mention it. But I've seen Mr Flynn around the castle." Leobald admitted. "Person's to consult besides the caretaker about security would be the Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms and Transfiguration professors." he supplied for good measure. As Annie stood up he understood that his interview was over. "Thank you for taking time to speak to me headmistress." He inclined his head slightly before attempting to stand up. He was stopped by the cat which had leaped over to his lap. Stroking the cat several times Leo lifted him up gingerly and placed him in his warm chair. "Bye!" Leo called over his shoulder as he left the office. Coming out of the office he found Hecate sitting in a wing back chair with a kneazle at her feet. "Hello, Hecate! You can head on in to the headmistress now she is waiting." With a last glance at the potions mistress Leo left the Gargoyle entrance. |
"Thank you, Leobald..." She said as she rose from her conjured chair which disappeared shortly after. She walked into the room with no password needed as the Gargoyle entrance was opened by the librarian, and as she was shutting the door behind her, Mephisto, sneaky kneazle that he is, scurried into the room. Hecate looked at the headmistress and ignored the kneazle. "Headmistress," she said with a polite nod. She stood in the doorway waiting to be asked to sit, or stand... or leave. |
Mhmm, sure, Leobald supplied the right answer now, after she had already thought of it. Imagine that. "Yes, well..." she watched as he petted her cat. "Good day to you, then." She saw him out and then turned to head back to her desk. She took a seat behind it and smiled at Gingersnapple, who was making himself comfortable in the warm spot Leo had left behind. Anastasia was resetting her quill as Hecate walked in. She didn't look up until her own cat started spitting and hissing from his perch on the chair, his fur all on end as he looked at the kneazle that had snuck in. "Ah, Hecate," she murmured as she took in the other woman's appearance. She did not bother to rise from her seat. "Do come in. You'll have to send your cat out, however, as Gingersnapple won't tolerate another in his area." No indeed. Gingy was flexing his claws and flicking his tail now, completely prepared to strike. |
"Kneazle..." She corrected. "And he isn't... exactly mine. He found me, followed me and decided to live in the dungeons in the castle... I don't exactly feed him..." Mephisto was a good mouser... "but I have healed him when he's been ill..." Mephisto was confused by the other cat. He jumped up on a table, an purred looking at Gingersnapple. "Mephisto... out." She said to the creature, but it would not mood. She rolled her eyes, and went to grab him, but the kneazle hissed. Hecate shook her head, grabbed the animal and carried it to the door, and tossed him out. "I would apologize for him, but Mephisto has a mind of his own, and he doesn't really see me as his owner..." She went further into the room and took a seat. "He seemed to be intrigued with your Gingersnapple." |
Yes, do go on, Lafay, like Annie really cares what the life story of Hecate's cat is. She found it interesting that the woman laid no claim to the cat and said it didn't claim her in return, yet... the two still behaved as owner and pet. It didn't matter, since the cat was gone now. "Right..." she said carefully once it was out of the room. "Well Gingersnapple was also interested, but only in attacking him it seems." She gave the woman a firm smile and tapped the tea kettle to get it going again. "So, Mrs. Greingoth... or do you prefer I address you as Lafay?" Annie would pretend to take her preferences into consideration. "Let's cut to the chase. You may, of course, help yourself to any tea or biscuits here... but tell me, why are you seeking this position?" Of all people... |
"Mistress Lafay, is how I like to be addressed professionally," she said to the woman, "Mrs. Greingoth is for ministry events. But you, Headmistress, may call me Hecate." She said crossing her legs. Yes, she saw how the cat wanted to attack Mephisto. It would have been funny to see the cat fight the kneazle. Though she would have been held accountable if Mephisto got the upper hand. "Thank you, but I only drink my own blend..." She said and then continued by answering the headmistress' question, "I suppose I could say I would like to give back to the school that gave me everything, it was here that I began my potioneering career, it was here that I met the man I fell in love with and it was here that I leaned to appreciate the youth of the wizarding world... Or I could tell you the truth, and tell you I'd like the power of being your second in command." She shrugged. |
"Hecate. You may call me Annie." An almost-real smile flickered onto Annie's face for just a brief moment but then it disappeared in a flash. She started her quill with a flick and it began writing again, as usual. Anastasia picked up her tea cup to move it to the tray and almost dropped the thing on her desk. Did Hecate just say she only drank her own blood? No, she must have misheard. She said she only drank her own blend, of tea, surely. Surely. The redhead shook herself just in time to hear Lafay's answer. "You want to be my second in command, or THE second in command, Hecate?" It was no surprise to Anastasia that the woman was power-hungry. Just look at who she had married. "Why's that? What would you do with such power?" And could she be trusted with it? |
"Your second in command... you are the Headmistress after all..." She smirked. "I'd continue teaching the students, trying to give them the best possible education, and helping them learn to survive. Also I'd take care of anything you wished me to handle. Things you didn't want to handle... Sending the parents letters telling them their student got hurt or passed away at school, telling the board of governors we need more money for the budget... I'm comfortable and fairly good at doing all that." She moved her gray lock behind her ear. |
Wow. That was a surprisingly good answer. Annie tried not to look too put off by it, which she showed by blinking a few times. "What are some changes you would make to Hogwarts as my second in command?" She continued the interview, noting that Gingersnapple had settled down and was now licking his tail thoroughly. |
"Changes?" She asked a little confused. "If I understand the role of deputy correctly, it doesn't suggest changes. The deputy simply assists in executing and carrying out the changes that the Headmaster or Headmistress had decreed, so I believe my question for you is, what changes would you like to implement at Hogwarts? Depending on your answer I can tell you how I would ensure your changes are made." |
"Generally, when one comes to an interview," the Headmistress smiled at Lafay, one of those 'Oh I'm on to you and it's a good thing you didn't drink the tea because it's poisoned' kind of smiles, "for a new position, one brings new ideas to the table. Sort of as a contribution. Change is good, wouldn't you agree?" She wanted to hear what Hecate had to say. If she wanted her own ideas bounced back to her she'd stare at her pensieve all day. |
"Oh, Change is fine." She said shrugging, "Annie. Let me be honest with you. I'm sure you have gotten plenty of ideas from my colleagues, you don't need mine. You are a smart woman, and I hope you can see I'm one as well. You wish for me to give you my ideas and while you are the Headmistress you may chose to implement them and claim them as your own. As deputy, I would get no credit... and as I said before, deputies don't decide on changes they merely carry them out." Hecate wouldn't go through that again. "Nothing against you, Annie... but I've been burned before by someone who even said he loved me, and took my ideas, my potion recipies, and my journals... and then took all the credit." He also told her, if she'd been smart she'd have taken his name when they married, so the credit would be hers then too. Men... |
Anastasia's eyebrows went up a bit at Hecate's... well, rather improper insinuation that she was here to steal her ideas. "In your experience, perhaps, deputies don't instigate change. But in my experience, and as long as I'm head of this school, I will have a deputy who is as focused on progress as I am, not one who concerns herself with... taking credit." She paused to consider the woman's history she had just shared. "No offense intended, of course, but I can't see why I should give you this job if you can't trust me to take what you say at face value and to leave it at that. I also can't see why you would deserve this job if you have nothing that sets you apart from the five other candidates who applied for this position." By the way Hecate described it, a trained monkey could be her second in command. Anastasia was much more bothered by Hecate's comment than she let on, and she had certainly let on a lot. Why on earth would she steal - or even CONSIDER - anything Hecate Lafay had to say? "I'd like to believe I have more decency than you're giving me credit for," the redhead half-sighed, and half-said in an audible tone. She looked down at her notes. |
She thought a moment and then said "I didn't realize Maximus was so focused on progress." It certainly hadn't shown... "I do focus on progress. I keep myself up to date on every new potion, every new change in procedure with older potions... Progress is very important to me." She said and then leaned forward in the chair. "You wish to know what sets me apart? My drive. My ambition. My commitment. I WILL get the job done even if I'm on death's door, and you know I have proven that. I have issues with trust, and therefor protect myself. I do trust you are a good and fair Headmistress, I've seen it. I never said you lacked decency. I respect you. I would never work for someone who I do not respect. Credit is not the only reason I excel at my work, but it is important to me and I won't apologize for that." She sighed and leaned back in the chair. "I take it my interview is over?" She had been too honest it seemed, and the Headmistress had taken offense. "I didn't mean to anger you, I meant it more as complimentary. We use what we can to succeed." |
Yes, well, Maximus had already had the job when Annie had been hired. She couldn't very well fire the "I see," the redhead responded simply. Would it be too much to push Hecate to say just WHAT job she was speaking of? Because she referenced potions, and she said she would enforce/do whatever Annie told her to do... but Anastasia didn't want a person like that. She wanted someone who would take initiative and sometimes do things on their own, not someone who... was a follower. Unfortunately, as much as Hecate was respected in her field, Anastasia felt that perhaps it was best she remained there. "I'm not a Slytherin, Hecate, as I do believe in teamwork and hard work, which is all I've used to get to where I am today." She did not yet rise from her seat, though. "If you feel this interview is over, then it is over. If you have anything else to say that you think would make me pick you, then speak now." |
"Do you truly believe that because I'm a Slytherin, I did not get where I am from hard work, and teamwork?" Her eyes were wide now. Potioneering wasn't something you could just fall into and pay or bride your way through. Hecate had talent with potions, and she had worked extremely hard to become as good as she was. ... now she was offended. Not just for herself, but the fact that the headmistress though Slytherins didn't believe in hard work. Not every Slytherin had everything presented on a silver platter. "I feel you've taken my honesty the wrong way." She said. "You asked me what I would like to change around here, and since you've invited me to take a stand rather than wait for your lead, then here's my proposed changes: I think we need to change the way we approach safety at the school. We shouldn't just look out for the students but teach them to look out for themselves. Do they know what to do if we’re attacked? Do they know where to go or what to do if we need to evacuate? We can teach them how to survive in this school so they will know how to do so in the real world. From what you've just said... I'd like to do away with the houses. Even if just for a week. I don't believe Slytherins are better than Hufflepuffs, or Gryffindors, or Ravenclaws... they need to learn that as well. Teach them to appreciate one another's differences. Thirdly, and I truly cannot believe I'm going to say this, but I’d encourage more staff and student events, because we don’t do enough with them. We sit in our offices and wait for problems to arise to handle the students. This needs to change. Do you know I'm one of the few professors that attends all the quidditch matches?" She leaned forward again, meeting the woman's gaze and staring her down. "Annie... I have a vested interest in this school. As I said earlier, I went to school here and I fell in love here, I wasn't lying about any of that. My daughter that goes to school here, and I have one who I want to send here in 11 years. I learned survival at a very young age, and I know how to hold my own in a position like Deputy Headmistress. It may not seem like it to you, but I have ideas, I have dedication, and I care for the well-being of this school and the people who live inside. So if you’re questioning what I think would make you want to hire me, well… I believe I've just answered you, and even if you don't give me the position which I not only deserve but am perfect for, I won’t stop trying to get better and better." |
"Yes and no, Hecate, as Slytherins are hardly known for their team work," Anastasia nearly spat the second word. "Don't mistake me, for I'm sure you have all the qualities.... of a professional, working woman. Otherwise you wouldn't still be here, would you." It was only then that the redhead revealed the folder containing the notebook her notes had been collecting in. It was black, thick, plain but professional, and stamped on the front were the words: CONFIDENTIAL She put the file down and waited for the other woman to finish before speaking again. Now, there, THAT was the fire Lafay was famous for. "Finally!" she said in a pleased tone. "FINALLY you're being honest with me, and with yourself." There was a long pause, made all the longer by the silence of the quill which had stopped writing everything down. Annie stood and held her hand across her desk. "Thank you for your time. I assure you, your ideas will not go uncredited nor unheeded, regardless of my final decision." |
"Good day, Annie." She said standing, and with a look at the cat she thought how fun would it be to set up a little meeting between Mephisto and the orange creature... ... she and Annie could bet on the outcome. She turned and left the woman's office. |
Well that was an abrupt end to an awkward interview. Anastasia shook her head as soon as Hecate was out the door and scooped up her cat. "Well, Gingersnapple, what to do now? I think we deserve a break from all these interviews." Before she made a decision, anyway. No rush on that! |
The Date: 07 June 2080It was a fine, perfectly warm summer day, and since there were no students around who could POSSIBLY sneak into her office today, Anastasia had the windows open and her chair tilted back. She had her hair up in a simple sweep and was wearing a colorful summer dress which occasionally ruffled in the light breeze swishing her curtains around. Gingersnapple, her overweight cat, was still in the Annie was too busy reading over school budget and BoG paperwork to bother telling the boy that the broom he was stirring his cauldron with was a collectible. As long as he was happy and quiet, she would be happy and quiet. And... she would wait on this Barrow she was supposed to be interviewing. Girl should be here any minute now. |
Peyton Barlow tried not to feel like an over-excited former schoolgirl as she walked through the familiar corridors of Hogwarts School. Truth be told, she was a mixture of nerves and excitement. This was such a big step for her, and if she succeeded, which she would, this would be a wonderful opportunity for her. She paused and smoothed down her skirt as she tried to collect her thoughts and compose herself. Really? Cale Newell? Eww... Peyton had heard things about him, too. Someone had spread around that he'd cut the tails off rabbits and fixed them to his head to use as hair. HA. Those things seemed silly now, but it was all running through Peyton's head like it'd happened yesterday. Before she knew it, she was standing in front of Professor Bunbury's door. Headmistress Truebridge. She was Headmistress Truebridge now. She knocked three times and waited for the Herbology professor--HEADMISTESS--to call her in. Come on, Peyton. Get it together. |
Tick tock, tick tock went the clock. And where oh where was little old Davie heard the knock before she did. "I'LL GET IT MUM," he shouted unnecessarily, pushing himself up from his play area and scrambling for the door. He was just tall enough to reach the knob if he stood on his tippy-toes and jumped for it, and with such an effort, the four-year-old managed to get the door to swing open with himself clinging to the back side of it. "Come in," Anastasia looked up from the file. She set her self-inking SmartQuill on its nib and folded her hands on her lap. Where had Davie gone now? |
When the door opened, seemingly by itself, Peyton was only slightly taken aback. Not because it opened by itself, though. No, that was something very simple to accomplish just by magic alone. The reason she was a bit taken aback is because in her mind, she'd imagined how this would go, and what she had imagined was being told to come in first. Then she'd open the door slowly and confidently, while preparing her best interview face for The Bunz. ...but no. She was left just standing there, door wide open, with The Bunz right before her. Peyton quickly smiled and smoothed down her skirt once again. Now she had to remember not to call this woman The Bunz either... "Good day, ..." Slight pause. "Headmistress Truebridge." YES! Score one for Peyton. She'd said the right name. She came to a stop beside a chair, debating on whether or not to take a seat. No, no she wouldn't take a seat. She'd wait to be asked. Instead, she shifted a portfolio from one hand to the other and extended a hand. "It's good to see you again." |
Once the laaaady in the skirt had stepped through, Davie shoved all his weight (and both feet) against the door to give it a good SLAM shut. Then he let go of the doorknob at last and dusted off his hands, marching back over to check on his potion. Just like this was an every day thing. Oh there was her son. How kind of him to open the door for this young woman. "Thank you darling," Annie mentioned with a smile toward her boy. She stood up then, finally, as the girl had offered a handshake. Annie first of all scrutinized her outfit, as she always did, with the simple, but extremely judgy, copywrighted Bunbury move: a head-to-toe flick of the eyes, her gaze lingering juuuuust enough so that the other person KNEW you were judging them but not long enough to be be misinterpreted as anything flirty. Especially not in that color of suit. No no, no. No. The Bunz finally nodded and shook Peyton's hand. "Miss Barrows, is it?" She did not remember the girl in the slightest. Whups. "Please, have a seat." She gestured toward the chair opposite hers and waited. |
Peyton had just extended her hand and offered her best 'let's get this interview started' line, when the door SLAMMED behind her. Right. She hadn't been expecting that at all; however, she only slightly budged, and by that, she meant she turned her head to see what the commotion was and saw...a child? "Oh, hello there," she said, offering the boy a smile, too. "This must be your..." She toyed with the idea of son versus grandson, but in the end, she decided to go with what would sound better. "...son. How polite of him to open the door for me." Now if he would have only known not to SLAM it, as well, things would have gone perfectly. She turned around just in time to see the scrutinizing of the outfit, but tried not to think anything of it. After all, this woman was out of Peyton's generation. Perhaps the older crowd had moved on to a slightly different styles. Grays, maybe? "Barlow," Peyton said, taking a seat as she said her last name. "Peyton Barlow." Just then, a breeze traveled in through the open window and blew Peyton's bangs backwards. Peyton gave a tight-lipped grin before sweeping them back in place. |
