It was bright and early on this crisp fall morning, and Gabi was eager to get started. She had been thinking up this assignment all summer long and was eager to finally introduce it to her students - and she couldn't WAIT to see what they all came up with! She was standing in her usual spot - propped up against the edge of her desk, waiting for all the students to arrive. There was something different about the History of Magic professor today, though. What was it? Oh! She wasn't wearing lipstick. Odd style choice, since she never went a day without it. Or maybe she forgot?
"Come on in, everyone!" Gabi said with a smile as the students started to trickle in. Someone definitely had their coffee this morning. "We will get started here shortly," she added. She didn't plan on keeping them here long - she wanted them to get their assignments and then head out, so they could start brainstorming!
Another long term assignment??? Wasn't Schmoe's nonsense with the babies last year enough??? Blake wasn't sure he would ever sleep properly again after the baby thing. He wasn't sure he could handle another one ... but History of Magical was a little different than muggle studies ... they wouldn't have babies again would they??
"Hello Professor....." Blake hesitated for a second ..."This has nothing to do with babies like Schmoe tortured us last year does it?" He had to ask ... he had to know .... otherwise he may very well just get up and leave!

"Good morning, Professor,'' Claudine greeted quietly. Was she awake? Of course she was. This girl was an early riser. It was just that today she was being her usual quiet self. A curious glance was thrown at Recard and the lack of lipstick. Yes, Claudine was usually observant but she said nothing, wondering if it was a casual slip of the memory on Recard's part or if the woman really had forgotten... like how Trent seemed to have been forgetting minor things at the Slytherin-Gryffindor activity thing.
With a mental shrug, and acting as though Blake Ryan wasn't there, she went to the back of the room. The usual spot was in order for her.

Naya arrived for History of Magic, as always curious about what their assignment would be. She entered the classroom with a cheerful greeting. “Good Morning Professor.” The Gryffindor did a bit of a double take. Hopefully it wasn’t obvious. The professor was looking different today. Hmmm. She wondered why that was, but didn’t really linger on the thought for long.
Naya found an empty seat toward the front of the class and sat down. She pulled everything that she thought she would need out of her bag and then placed it on the floor. Now she just had to wait for class to begin.

With winter in full swing, Ewan headed straight for the History of Magic classroom on this particularly crisp morning, his robes puled tightly around him to keep the cold out. Sure, he was used to the cold weather but he still didn’t fancy having to take a trip to the hospital wing to receive a Pepperup potion.
Smiling at the professor as he walked through the door, he instantly noticed the lack of lipstick on her. He would have pointed it out but he didn’t want to seem rude so instead, he simply gave her a jolly ”Good morning Professor. Bit chilly this morning, isn’t it?” as he headed past her desk towards the desks.
With a nod and smile towards the two Slytherin’s and the Gryffindor students who were already there, he made his way towards a desk on his own and sat down before finally pulling out some parchment and a quill.

Maybe it was the change in weather from summer to fall. Who knew? But whatever it was had caused Isla to actually be up and at 'em this morning. She actually made her way into class with a little pep in her step. "Morning, Professor!" she said, passing by the desk and sparing the woman a split-second glance. Isla wouldn't have noticed the lack of lipstick even if she had gotten a better look at Recard. So it was on to her seat she went.
She got good and settled and thought to herself that she hoped today's lesson wouldn't be a long one. Maybe it was the fact that she was nearly thirteen and thought she was a big, bad teenager, but classes just weren't her thing this school year.
As Avalon made her way from Ravenclaw Tower to the History of Magic classroom, she thoroughly regretted not wearing her scarf. It was much colder than she expected, and even though she wasn't going outside, she was cold. And very tired -- so tired in fact, that the usually observant Ravenclaw didn't notice that Professor Recard was missing her signature lipstick. These early morning classes were not her thing. Nevertheless, she was looking forward to finding out about their new assignment.
"Good morning, Professor," she said with a wave as she grabbed a seat. She just hoped that this project wouldn't involve babies - there was already plenty of that with Muggle Studies last term.

Bernie really had no idea what this class was about; there had been NO homework for her to ignore or ANYTHING like that posted, so. Guess she'd be finding out, huh?
"Morning, Professor," she greeted Madame Recard as she trailed Avalon into the room and then picked out a desk near Blake.

Ughhh. It was morning. And it was cold. And really, she wished it would have been acceptable to be bundled up all nice and cozy into her dad's large sweater that she had brought from home. But alas, uniform was required so she was properly attired in that with her scarf hanging loosely around her neck. She wasn't very excited about a term long project, but thus far Professor Recard's classes had been enjoyable so she was going to give the benefit of the doubt that maybe this would not be awful.
Stepping into the classroom after her fellow peers, K smiled at Professor Recard and said a quick, "Good Morning" before moving out of the doorway and heading towards a desk over by Avalon. She smiled at the Ravenclaw, "Good morning. Full term projects also a familiar thing for this school?" She could hear a lot of students asking if this was going to be like the baby project? Settling herself into her desk seat, she crossed her legs at the ankles and pulled out her quill and parchment for note taking on the assignment.
Look at her. Even starting to somewhat look the part of a good student.

Heath had to stifle a yawn as he made his way toward the History of Magic classroom. The combination of the cold and the early hour made him unusually sleepy. Whatever this assignment was, he hoped it wouldn’t take long… not that he disliked the class or didn’t want to learn or anything like that. He just wanted to go back to the common room and curl up with a blanket!
Despite his sluggishness, Heath still managed a nod and small smile for Professor Recard as he walked into the room. “Hello, Professor,” he greeted. Blink, blink. Was it just him or did something seem a bit… different about the professor today. Never mind. He couldn’t really place it, so it was probably nothing. He took a seat at his usual place toward the middle of the room and arranged his supplies neatly on the desk in front of him.

Please don’t be a crying baby Islay thought to herself as she made her way to the History of magic classroom. Rubbing her tired eyes and possibly smearing the bit of eyeliner she had tried to apply that morning the Gryffindor shuffled into the room. Truly, she had barely even picked up her slippered feet as she walked.
“good morn...” she tried to stifle a yawn and thrust her hand over her mouth as the yawn started to escape. Giving Professor Ricard an apologetic smile for that show of unintentional disrespect the Gryffindor tried again. “Good morning Professor Ricard,” she gave her a small curt nod as she made her way and stood near to Naya for a moment before sitting down next to her dormmate.

Like many of her classmates, the first thing Jina thought of when she heard about the History of Magic long term assignment was the Muggle Studies project in the previous year. That was an interesting one, but she was hoping for nothing too annoying in this assignment. She was honestly not expecting it to be a nuisance, given the generally chill nature of Professor Recard's lessons. And the assignment would be about Newt Scamander right? It would probably be something hands-on and fun.
"Good morning, Professor! You look nice today," she said with a smile, noticing that the professor was not wearing lipstick like usual. She knew how much courage it took to try a different style, so she wanted to give her professor some encouragement! Carrying her Scamander folder in one hand, she went to take a seat.

"Ok everyone - let's begin this introduction into your History of Magic long term assignment!" Gabi said with a smile as she stood to her full height, eyeing everyone with an eager grin. She gave her usual wave of her wand, and the door closed, signaling that it was time to begin.
"I won't keep you all very long this morning, I promise," the blonde chuckled a little before turning to the blackboard, waving her wand so that the title of the assignment appeared in thick white chalk:
Quote:
FLAT NEWT SCAMANDER LONG TERM PROJECT
"Now, some of you who grew up in muggle households might be familiar with the term 'flat Stanley'," Gabriela began, well aware that for those students who WEREN'T familiar with the muggle term - she was about to confuse them for a few seconds. "Essentially, it entails taking a cardboard cutout of a doll - aka Stanley - and taking pictures with him in various places. Students usually send him with parents or relatives on vacation, so Stanley can travel the WORLD, and then they write up a report about his adventures," she explained. Each teacher had a variation on that assignment, and she was no different.
"For the rest of the term, you'll be in charge of your own Flat Stanley - but in this case, we're calling him Flat Newt, because obviously, he's Newt Scamander!" she reached below her desk and pulled out a box of cardboard cutouts of Newt Scamander - if she hadn't already explained what they were doing, the sight of so many Newt paper dolls, all about 10 inches in height, would have probably been slightly unsettling.
SPOILER!!: Newt cutout!
"We all know from our previous lesson on Newt that not only was he very gifted when it came to magical creatures, but he dabbled in all sorts of magic - he was a curious lad who was always on the quest to learn something new. So, for your assignment this term, you'll carry Newt around and take some pictures of him around the castle. You'll have to write up an accompanying story for each picture of what Newt was doing and WHY he was doing it," she paused, in case anyone was taking notes. They didn't have to, of course - a full rubric would be posted soon for them to reference.
"Before we get into the rules and specifics of the assignment, please come up front and grab your very own Newt cardboard cutout for the assignment. Write your name on the back, so if it gets misplaced we know who to return him to," she added. She could only imagine the chaos of a bunch of Newt cutouts all making their way to the lost and found with no names on them. "Additionally if you do not have a camera of your own, you can borrow one for the duration of the assignment," she added, reaching down and pulling out another box full of simple cameras for them if they didn't already own a camera. "Well, off you go then, single file line please!"
OOC: Flat Newt time! This part of the assignment is super simple - do as Gabi instructed, and head up to pick up your Newt doll (I keep saying doll but imagine a cardboard cutout shrunk down to the size of a Barbie doll, ya know?) As I mentioned above, specific rules, post requirements, etc. will be coming soon. In the meantime however, I recommend SAVING the picture I provided of Newt to make your lives a bit easier. As for IC stuff, just focus on your character collecting the materials. We'll move on in about 24 hours. Thanks!

Oh OH! Cool! A Flat Stanley project! Yeah, Bernie had done something like this her primary school days. AND she'd finally been reading her books about Newt so she was VERY EXCITED to take her Flat Scamander on an adventure.
She came up, picked up a Newt, and then went back to her desk to write her name all over the back of him. This was TOTALLY gonna be easier than caring for a bby!

Naya’s curiosity was growing as the minutes passed by. She smiled when her dormie (Islay) sat beside her. She was about to ask her something when the professor began to speak. She would just have to save it for later. For now, it was time to find out about their project. Drumroll please.
When the professor mentioned a “flat Stanley”, Naya was puzzled. She grew up in the muggle world, but she was not familiar with that term. As they received further explanation, everything became clearer. She had heard of this activity before, but it was called by another name. So they got to have a paper doll Newt and take pictures of him. The professor said the magic words. Naya was excited that she would get to put her photography skills to work. This was going to be fun. She wasn’t quite as excited about the storytelling part, but she would make it work.
The sixth year went up to the front of the classroom and picked out her Newt doll. She had her camera in her dorm room, so she didn’t need to borrow one from the professor. When she got back to her seat, Naya took out her quill and wrote her name on the back of the cutout. Then she waited not so patiently to hear the details of the assignment.

To say that Carsyn was looking forward to a long-term assignment was an overstatement. Carsyn hateeedddd these sorts of projects; also the crying baby last term kind of was the worst. Having taking a seat near Ewan in hopes that if they did need a partner, he'd be a good one to partner with cause well, surely as a seventh year he was one to remember to feed the baby.
Oh but they weren't doing anything like that at all... Flat Newt? Huh? Weird... but taking pictures wasn't so bad, she supposed. Joining the queue, the sixth year picked up one of the cardboard dolls and a camera. She had her own camera, but well, she didn't want to accidentally include a picture that was meant for personal use in a class project. Taking out her quill, she wrote on the back some identifiers.

She didn't know who Stanley was or why they had to talk about him in class, but hey if it got them a project she would listen. Chloe loved history and she liked projects, so having both together couldn't be a problem. Listening to the professor she looked to see what the flat Newts looked like, though she couldn't get a good look from where she was sitting.
Standing up she headed towards the front of the room and got in line. What on earth could she do with this thing. They were always stuck in the same places together, so that would mean everyone would have the same pictures? Maybe she could get creative in the Room of Requirement with some pictures or maybe at Christmas they could get some when they were at home.
Either way she took one and put her name and year down then headed back to her seat.
Flat...Stanley? Aboli was familiar with muggles and yet...had never heard of this before in her life. Nonetheless, she went up to grab her Flat Newt and to write her name and info on the back. He was kinda small...what if a certain roommate of hers set fire to it? What if she squished it????
"Professor, can we get a new one at any point in the semester if it...I dunno', accidentally catches FIRE or something?" Asking for a friend.
Also, yes, Aboli would need to burrow a camera. And she supposed she would have to be responsible for that, too.

She wouldn't keep them long?! REALLY?! That was amazing news! Although, the words across the chalkboard reminding them this was a LONG TERM PROJECT kind of put a damper on Isla's sudden good mood. She still wasn't quite sure about this. The last time there was a long term project, she ended up as a mother and a wife.
Oh, yeah--Flat Stanley! Isla had gone to muggle primary school before attending Hogwarts, and they'd done a Flat Stanley project when she was about seven or so. Anyway, MORE GREAT NEWS. This was a paper cutout--not a baby doll that actually pooped in its pants. She could handle this!
She followed the line of people headed to the front and grabbed her very own Flat Newt. Once she was back at her desk, she wrote her name in fancy bubble letters on the back of Newt. Why? Just because. And of course she didn't have a camera. BORING. She'd be borrowing one of those!
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Claudine had her writing instruments out, ready to make notes. But right off the bat, Recard confused her. ‘Flat’ Newt Scamander? ‘Flat’ Stanley? Quill poised over her notebook, she sat there frowning at the woman, hoping things got cleared up soon. Fortunately, they did and the girl was able to add these revelations to her knowledge. She gave the cutout Newts a look. They were small and easy enough to carry around and that was perfect.
Notes were made and she occasionally glanced up at Recard. Already this project was turning out to be exciting. Claudine polished off her notes then stood behind the last person in the line. In no time she had collected her cutout and camera.
Back at her seat, her name was written in neat cursive at the back as instructed.
Oh it was that Salamander guy again? Was Professor Recard the president of his fan club or what? Morgan wasn't sure what was so great about him compared to any other old guy from history, but he had to admit that as far as homework assignments went, this wasn't a bad one. He wouldn't mind too much to take a picture of the guy around to different parts of the castle and make up exciting adventure stories for him. He just wasn't so sure about the writing part. That felt like a lot of work.
Still, he hopped up from his seat and got in line to claim a cardboard cutout for himself. Morgan decided to grab a camera too because, even though he thought he might have his own somewhere, he wasn't completely sure where it was and it was probably best to just get one. And once he got back to his seat, he wrote MF McCarthy on the back. Everyone knew that was him by now.

Ewan just eyed the white chalk on the board for a moment as the professor revealed it, curious what exactly their project would be. He did slightly hold his breath though because he was not signing up for any baby-sitting. Not a chance. His eyes want back to the professor as she explained what they were going to be doing although the expression on his face was far from amused.
A flat wHaT? He’d grown up in a muggle house hold for the most part and had no idea what that was. Nope. Never heard of sending a cardboard cut-out around the world. With a bemused look on his face, the prefect tilted his head towards Carsyn and mumbled ”You ever heard of a flat Stanley before or is it just me?”. This sounded like something from muggle studies and not history of magic. Unless…
Sighing a little, the prefect put together the ‘long term project’ that the professor wanted to do just as she explained. They would be taking Newt around places and taking pictures of him. Oh, the joy. And just look at him in his cloak. All creepy and beady eyed.
Ewan joined the que for his own Flat Newt and then headed over to grab a camera before going back to his shared desk with Carsyn where he eventually wrote his name on the back in his neat and somewhat elegant writing.

Noah has been rather quite at the beginning of the lesson. He... he didn’t feel like himself today, he supposed? Sort of felt out of sorts so he had remained quiet. He didn’t know why he felt this way but he just kinda did. So the Professor has received a weak smile and nod when he had walked in the classroom. Then the Professor was talking about their assignment. He remained silent and listened before a smile appeared on his lips.
Flat Stanley? Two words he thought would never get used at Hogwarts. He smiled to himself, enjoying the reference, before standing up to join the rest of his classmates in line. This sounded like a fun project. He wondered where he would be able to bring Newt too and all the comical ideas ensued in his head. Afternoon tea with Newt... Hmm... more ideas flowed into his mind. However these ideas were interrupted by Aboli asking if they set theirs on fire if they would get a new one. He raised his eyebrows, wondering what she was thinking, as he joined the line. Single file line, he picked up the necessary Flat Newt. Luckily, he had his camera up in the dorm room so he wouldn’t need to borrow one.
Returning to his seat which was near Aboli, he leaned over and whispered, “...Are you planning on giving yours a name?” Then he quickly wrote his name on the back.
Whew ... so much easier than caring for a baby so much easier ... at least Blake hoped so. I mean at least this cardboard Newt didn't cry ..... but then again this was Hogwarts and any number of things could happen with this little cardboard cut out!
"This could be rather fun!" Blake was kind of excited, ... he wondered if this mini Newt was water proof?? Would he survive a swim in the lake??
