Default HoM Lesson - A Knut for Your Thoughts?

Upon entering the History of Magic classroom, you’ll notice that it looks the same as ever minus a few minor changes. Holden’s desk has three boxes (all varying in size, shape, material, and colour: gold, silver, and lead - perhaps an homage to Holden’s favourite Shakespearean play) The Professor himself stands next to the chalkboard with a message written in chalk. Fortius Quo Fidelius. For those familiar with Latin, this may be a more obvious hint to what they would discuss in today’s lesson. Below those words are instructions: “Take a seat, class, and start working through the crosswords on your desk”

SPOILER!!: Crossword

INSTRUCTIONS: Use the clues to fill in the words above. Words can go across or down. Letters are shared when the words intersect. For longer answers that have multiple words, there are no spaces in between.

ACROSS
1. A gold coin equivalent to 493 Knuts
3. A musical song with the lyrics: "I work all night, I work all day to pay the bills I have to pay"
5. A form of wizarding currency. Burgock (A Goblin) was allergic to this coin's material
6. These magical humanoid creatures speak Gobbledegook and are adept metal smiths notable for their silver work
7. Made out of silver and equivalent to 29 Knuts

DOWN
1. The goblin and founder of a very important Wizarding Bank in the UK
2. Chief of the Wizards' Council who attempted to define all magical creatures as either a Being or a Beast
4. A plant used as currency many moons ago

OOC: Class has STARTED!!
Lesson Progression:
1. Greetings & Opening Question
2. Answers & Question 2
3. Answers and Mini Activity
4. Answers & Question 3
5. Main Activity
6. Closing

The second: What do you think are inside these three boxes in front of me?" he asked, pausing to almost Ivana White the three boxes in front of him. "And lastly what does the saying Fortius Quo Fidelius mean?" With his last question, he tapped the chalkboard next to him.

Cool blue eyes scanned the classroom looking for the first hand to be raised.

Simon smirked and thought. Not all at once now.

He prompted the class. "A Knut for your thoughts?"
Bella had almost finished the crossword when Professor Holden stopped them to kick off the lesson by revealing the answers to the crossword. She was inwardly proud of herself for getting most of the answers right, but not the one where it was supposed to say money three times in a row. Bella would ask Jude later if he had gotten that one right. She let some of the others answer the questions first because she wanted a little time to think. When she felt ready she raised her hand and answered in slow, but clear tone. "I think the lesson's topic will be wizard money, and possibly muggle money too unless the whole focus will be on Gringotts bank. The three boxes are large enough to contain galleons, knuts and sickles which we wizarding folk use to buy things with." Bella paused for a moment before she finished off. "I think the motto 'Fortius Quo Fidelius' means that there is strength in a loyal teammate and that you should value loyalty in a friend too." Feeling like she had rambled enough she quieted down and took up a parchment to take lesson notes on.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Okay... okay, OKAY, she may have zoned out a little bit. Just a little bit. Ash looked up with confusion as the answers appeared on the back, blushing since everyone else appeared to know what was going on. Shame... she had wanted to finish that crossword puzzle. But it wasn't a big deal, and she resolved to pay more attention to the class.

"The crossword was on goblins and money, so I'd say this lesson is on Gringotts. Maybe the history of it, and Gringott, its founder? Strength through loyalty is like, their motto, which makes sense for a bank. Gringotts is famously safe. Usually." She had no desire to to guess what was in the boxes, as she assumed Professor Holden was about to show them.

Mitsuki was an interesting one, did she know? Ash's lips twitched a little bit, suppressing a smile. Could she have free money too? Not that she was going to ask... she'd rather see the knuts spent on improving the school and making it not fall down on their heads(ha ha). She sat back and listened to the other answers. The general consensus seemed to be that the boxes had money in them(where would they get money from, and shouldn't the box be bronze?), and there were a couple interesting answers about the Order of the Badger(Ash had certainly never heard of it, although she vaguely remembered something about hufflepuff untrustworthiness from somewhere). She wondered if healer poppy had been a hufflepuff. It was hard to imagine the lady going to hogwarts at all. She decided that Healer Poppy was an honorary NOT hogwarts student ever. Not welcome, no thanks, no house would claim her.

...wasn't she supposed to be focusing? Right. Gringotts. Yes.

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Summer had been struggling since she arrived with the word search, seriously whoever invented them were strange, who thought it would be a good way to get your brain working but she didn't, she rolled her eyes at a couple of the clues, like seriously how was she supposed to know them.

She was about to grab the paper and scrunch it up when she was saved from trouble by the Professor asking question, oh this was going to be fun, what was in the boxes now that was a question she could answer. She raised her hand and with a smile. "Maybe there's money in the boxes and we have to guess the correct amount?" She had heard of old programmes that used to do that and she thought it would be cool to do.

Evan gave a brief smile to Cailyn as she sat in the seat beside him, before looking back at his paper. He heard her suggestion, and nodding in agreement. "Good idea." He said softly back, before attempting to do so. He didn't get far at all though, as the seat on the other side of him was taken and Evan looked up to look at Jude, offering him a smile as well and trying to keep the concern from it. He was concerned though, and looked his friend over for a moment. "Hey." He considered asking if he was alright, but paused before he did so and opted to check in with him later. If it was something he even wanting to talk to Evan about.

Ash got a return wave at her entrance, before it seemed it was time for class to start. He'd made it nowhere on his crossword and he'd not figured out the phrase but that was alright. He was certain they'd go over it soon anyways.

As for the questions, Evan truly didn't have much to contribute as it seemed he'd stalled long enough that everything was covered. He certainly agreed that the lesson was probably pertaining to Gringotts, and inside the boxes were probably different types of currency, especially given the word choice in the crossword and Holden's own 'knut for your thoughts'. Evan nearly face palmed himself hearing Jude respond the answer about the latin phrase, and he quickly jotted it down under his previous notes.

Thinking more on the question, he decided to offer another relative alternative to what was in the boxes - though even he didn't think it was probably correct. Raising his hand, the Ravenclaw waited to be called on before offering his response. "I agree with the majority saying the lesson is probably regarding Gringott's. But instead of just the money itself, in the boxes could be something representative of the different traps within Gringott's as it's highly secure." Another thought popped into his head. "Or it's something representative of the personnel who were most influential in establishing the bank."

History was one of his least favorite lessons even though Professor H was pretty chill. Jas leaned back in his chair as the lesson began, knuckles rapping against his desk as Professor H began the lesson with a series of questions. Jasper threw a casual hand into the air and grinned before offering up an answer. "Wish there'd be food in the boxes," he chuckling warmly as he lowered his hand again.

And right on cue, his stomach growled. Hungry and history seemed to go hand in hand. Maybe if they were lucky, one of the boxes had chocolate galleons in it. That'd be a fun surprise. On theme too, Professor H.

Jasper Botros? Full of great ideas.

Sooo Lydia hadn't really wanted to do the crossword puzzle. She wasn't the biggest fan of puzzles, including those of the crossword variety, and that was even more true when they were history-class-related. But she did make a small attempt by answering the one about the song lyric, and then pretending that she was thinking about the others by staring at the paper, but really she was just playing the song in her head.

And now it was stuck.

So that was gonna make it more difficult to focus on the lesson.

The professor was talking, something about the boxes and Fort quote thing. And despite the "Money, money, money" playing in the background of her mind, she was attempting to listen. Coming up with an actual answer was harder though...

Until Mercer said something about a Hufflepuff cult called The Order of the Badger?? "Oh, I agree! We should learn about that!" Sounded pretty cool. Aside from the brainwashing part. That wasn't cool. Er. Maybe interesting would be a better word.

"Hey," he smiled at the younger Gryffindor before doing a quick scan of the crossword. Jas wasn't in any rush to get that sorted. "Did you get a haircut?"

Matilda offered Jasper a little smile when he took a seat next to her, happy to see him. Oh, her haircut. She ran a hand through her hair self-consciously, nodding. "Yes, I did." .. That sounded a little abrupt, didn't it? "Um, I thought it would be a good idea. I like it."

.. She raised her eyebrows slightly. She never understood it when professors asked them to guess what the lesson was about. How would they know? Especially when they were going to be learning something new? It didn't make sense to her so she stayed quiet. The third year didn't like answering questions in lessons anyway.

Maxine wasn't really sure what the lesson was going to be about ...

"Maybe about wizarding money?" Maxine truly was just kind of hoping she was right, she wasn't real sure today. Her brain was rather in a fog, she had trouble sleeping last night and was definitely not on top of her game today.

"Fortius Quo Fidelius ... means Strenght through loyalty, or at least something alone those lines" It was something she had heard her dad say a few times in passing.

Based off of that and the crossword with its currency-centric answers, the answer to the professor's question didn't seem too difficult.

"Since you have the Gringotts motto on the board, it seems like you might have Wizarding currency inside the boxes."

Was he planning on doling out money instead of house points? This was definitely a lesson Maya could get behind.
He could have sworn Maya Nam sit up a little straighter and pay more attention. Ah, she clearly liked money so she was intrigued by their lesson. He nodded. “Perhaps…. it is about Gringotts. The lesson that is.

Simon nodded at Miss Fox’s supposing. She had gathered her facts and had made a convincing case for what the lesson was about. He nodded, pleased with this student’s improvement. “Precisely so, Miss Fox. Very astute.” Pleased, he was.

Leave it to Mr. Nam to come up with a creative theory. Simon smiled, pleased with the improvement by presenting a theory instead of spitting out facts. Very pleased he was. “You are correct about Gringotts being a part of the lesson plan… Interesting theory about the founders. I may have to shamelessly borrow that idea for a future lesson.

He ignored everyone except Keigh. He had wondered how long it would be until his shadow got there. Jude waved his quill at her while giving her a small smile then he promptly went back to his doodling.

It was only due to his attempts to play things normal did he flip the crossword over. His doodles printed through quite clearly in one corner of the back of the page, the reverse side of where the doodles were done.

The Hufflepuff raised his hand about halfway up. “Fortius Quo Fidelius means ‘Strength Through Loyalty’.” It was one of the mottos of someplace here in the Wizarding World. And the quote had stuck with him because he was big on loyalty.
Mr. Anders’ answer was concerning. He frowned.

He was glad to see Anders’ still participating and offering answers. That was … promising, yes? “Precisely so!

It tells the story of a private investigator assigned with capturing a serial killer who murders people with alliterative names. I'm not very far in, but so far it is good and..."

Jasper halted his ramblings as he walked*past his desk and knocked on it as a hello. He had to admit that he appreciated the interruption because he was feeling embarrassed. ”So…yeah…” He put the book back in his bag and returned to working on the puzzle.

After completing the puzzle, he noted with displeasure that he had one question wrong and pushed the puzzle to the corner of his desk.

Daniel raised an eyebrow in response to Mercer's words. ” You think it's the pudding?" he said cryptically, feeding in on the 'badger brainwash cult' conspiracy because it was ridiculously funny before he scribbled down the quote on the board in his notebook.

As he listened to Jude explain what the quote on the board meant, it started to appear familiar. When Maya (his ears turned bright red as he turned his head*to face her) said that it was Gringrotts' motto, the Hufflepuff let out a faint 'oh' as he saw the bank's emblem in his mind's eye. She was correct."So the lead box correlates with knuts. The silver box with the sickles and the golden box with galleons?". He added to Lily’s words. ” Is that box made from real gold or leprechaun gold, sir?" And if it was real, could he have it?
He liked hearing what his students were up too. He smiled at Daniel’s happy facial expression. Upon seeing it, all thought of suspecting Daniel apparated from his mind. “Agatha Christie… brilliant author.” He nodded, listening to Daniel speak about the ABC murders. “I haven’t read that novel. I’ll have to give it ago.

Now Daniel’s response in reference to the chests made him smile. “You are correct, Mr Yoon. It is both a reference to that and the Merchant of Venice.

I've been told Hufflepuff are good finders," she said in low volume. Looking back at her crossword now, the Hufflepuff eventually paused with solving it when she no longer knew the answers to the other hints, so she instead filled in the Os in her paper to look like little cookies and then drew her Pac-Mans trying to eat them.

A work of art. A masterpiece. Yukie was incredibly pleased with herself at how it was looking so far. Plus, she would have been more than ready to defend herself had her sister gotten the opportunity to question her motivations. Yukie interpreted the curious look from Mitsuki as a request to look at her crossword, and so she lifted it, with a big smile, to show her sister. Look! Pac-Mans and cookies everywhere!

When class was announced to start, Yukie blinked at her paper and flipped it to reveal the answers. Oh, wonderful! She went ahead and copied those to her own crossword so it looks filled up, all while listening to the professor's introductory questions, and even took the liberty to use green ink for them. Now, her paper with the now finished crossword was looking better than ever. She hoped Professor Holden would appreciate the art she made her if he were to collect these at the end of the session.

Back to the actual lesson now. Yukie gave Mercer a surprised look for his answer. Order of the Badger? Brainwashing? Too much pudding? Nobody could ever have too much pudding! What a concept, that was. With that, Yukie turned to the professor to give her answer. "I think there is money money money in the boxes, sir!" See the reference there, Professor? Yukie found herself funny for it. "Why not a sickle or a galleon for our thoughts, Professor?" The littlest Rasting also added. Since Mitsuki kinda brought that up, and Yukie wouldn't be opposed to an extra coin to her savings.
Miss Rasting’s clever and fun response did bring a smile to Simon’s face. He couldn’t help but actually chuckle at her response. “Perhaps,” he nodded. The smile grew at the littlest Rasting’s question. “It could be a sickle or a galleon too. I just took the Muggle phrase of a penny for your thoughts…

Ding Ding Ding!! This was answer filled response. Simon spent the majority of the time nodding his head to the student’s points. “We will learn about wizarding money and it’s history. Thank you for sharing,” he replied with a smile after her detailed answer. Excellent detail and thought as always from this student.

Three questions... and the older kids were already answering them. Something about money, about Gringott's. Boxes full of cold, hard cash. And the saying... Mercer glanced up at that, because it was a weird one. Strength through... loyalty. Where was Milo? Simon’s eyebrows were raised at the mention of the Hufflepuff Cult. Merlin’s… The creativity of these kids- especially this one- earned a big smile AND a chuckle from the Professor. “Ah indeed. Ah, she’d close.

She started noting down the intersecting letters for no reason. G – B – M – N – G – S. Did it mean anything – probably not ... but it could. Raising her hand she waited to be picked on. ”as Maya Nam pointed out the boxes all contain money or maybe just the metals they are made from?” she paused for a second, ”i might go further and say it could be money allocated to the dance later this year? ... and maybe we have to set up the whole budget for the dance?” they did say all the students could be involved hadn’t they?

Miss Donovan had an interesting theory. Simon liked theories.

She was on track with the boxes and had him nodding up until the mention of the dance. “I suppose that’s a theory… but I’d hope the boxes have an undetectable extension charm.. otherwise that may be a very… tiny budget, Miss Donovan.

She had only gotten as far as dipping her quill back in the inkwell when Ashley Fox slid into the seat beside her and once again that curious tingling agitated her cheeks. Since the older girl had slid into the seat silently, Mitsuki did not interrupt her and instead turned her attention towards Mercer who had also joined her.

"Did you lose your glasses in the maze?" she inquired as she peered towards his paper as though she would spot them within the little squares somewhere. "If it is a maze, then it must have exits. If it doesn't, then it's IKEA." That was something dad had said once when they all had gone shopping for some furniture for Becky's apartment.

It took a exaggerated moment for her to process what it was her sister was expressing and even then she had no solid recollection. Why Yukie would want to draw a packed man (which conjured imagery of a man folded up inside of a box) was a curious notion and caused a pause as Mitsuki tilted her head to look at her sister curiously. However, between another older Ravenclaw girl entering and waving in their direction (another pause for confusion, but also reminiscent of the out of place familiarity the girl had displayed at the start-of-term feast) and the professor beginning class, Mitsuki had no opportunity to question her sister's motivations.

The corners of her lips turned downwards slightly as the green ink showed through slightly on her ghosts and ruined the whole aesthetic. She turned the paper over and gave everything a cursory look over, seeing the answers without really seeing the answers, and then lay the paper back down on her desk with her quill back in the inkwell for more in and then back to her parchment to write down the professor's questions.

Yes, she could venture a guess based on very little information...though she preferred not to, just as she preferred not to speculate on the contents of the boxes and be disappointed when it was not that which she would have liked it to be. She had already transcribed the Latin's English on her crossword paper, so that task had already been accomplished. It was his fourth question that drew the majority of her attention.

"I would like a knut, professor."

She had offered a thought just now. A thought based in a casual desire, to be precise.
This Rasting’s response got an amused smile and a warranted quick response from the Australian. “And you shall receive one… in due time.

And right on cue, his stomach growled. Hungry and history seemed to go hand in hand. Maybe if they were lucky, one of the boxes had chocolate galleons in it. That'd be a fun surprise. On theme too, Professor H.

Jasper Botros? Full of great ideas.
Riiiiiiiight.

He blinked, refraining from urge to sigh loudly, and just nodded at Mr Botros. The lad was always hungry. Simon could sympathize as it was a male condition that he was quite familiar with. “Who knows? There could be some treats.

Simon quirked his eyebrow at another outburst. He offered an amused smile. “Perhaps Mr Branxton can give a TedLupin Talk on it,” he offered before turning to the next student with their hand raised. He had to give it to the class- they were always creative in their answers.

.. She raised her eyebrows slightly. She never understood it when professors asked them to guess what the lesson was about. How would they know? Especially when they were going to be learning something new? It didn't make sense to her so she stayed quiet. The third year didn't like answering questions in lessons anyway.
Simon cast his gaze towards the silent student. Ah, perhaps she was not saying anything as the other students had covered most of the topics? Pragmatic indeed. He gave her a small nod.

He was very pleased with all of their answers. “Amazing answers class!” He was quite chuffed. Very proud indeed.

"Today's lesson is about... drum roll please...." He flicked his wand, queuing the drum kit in the corner to start a steady roll. "Wizarding Economics." He paused for a reaction before continuing. "Let's talk money! This class is going to be different today. Each question or activity will earn you a Holden Knut. Based on the number of Holden Knuts you earn, you will be able to select from the THREE prizes on the desk in front of me. They are contained in the boxes here."

"Because you are all here and present, you will automatically receive one Holden Knut. For those who completed the crossword, you will also get one. For those who answered the question, you will get another. Makes sense?"

Blue eyes glanced around the room, scanning for any looks of confusion and hands raised with questions.

"Fantastic. Let's talk about currencies both Muggle and Magical. Can you name a past or current Magical or Muggle currency? Feel free to include a fact too, yes?" he asked, pausing to look for the first hand that he saw. Hint.. Hint... the crossword contained several answers pertaining to this question.

OOC: Second question is up. WHAT AMAZING CREATIVITY Y’ALL. You had me cackling a lot at the answers. I really want a lesson on the Order of the Badger now

So there are PRIZES that students can trade their coins in for at the end of the lesson. Each question that a student answers will automatically earn a Holden Knut. A Holden Knut is larger than a normal Wizarding Knut; however, it is made out of bronze clay. The design itself contains a portrait of one of the Professors at Hogwarts.

The prizes are:
  1. a bag of freshly purchased Honeydukes candies
  2. a collection of books and magazines
  3. a mixtape containing songs about money
  4. and a mystery box (which remains hidden at this time )
You'll have 24 hours before we move on!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude just kept his eyes down on his notes though… his notes were sort of incomplete because he didn’t feel like writing that much. This wasn’t the best tactic for a student preparing for major exams in a few months. Perhaps Keigh took better notes and he would borrow them later.

Wizarding economics… that was sort of interesting. The Hufflepuff jotted the topic in purely capitalised letters before underlining the words. On a regular day, he’d be all excited and super enthusiastic about the activity but… yeah. Today was just going to be mellow for him. So, by his count that meant he got a single Holden Knut for that question he answered; the crossword still stared up at him completely untouched save for the musical notes he had doodled. Not that Jude cared about winning anything.

Taking his time to think about currencies, the fifth year found himself particularly zoning in on those of Muggles. He took his time in raising his hand halfway up, finally lifting his gaze to seek out Holden’s. It would be disrespectful to Holden if he just averted his eyes all the while. “Certain Caribbean countries use the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. Uh… I think it came about sometime in the mid 1900s.” Talk about ancient.

But how did he know this? Because of Reagan. Sometime after she had gotten into theater, there had been a play she minorly took part in which had been set in Trinidad and she had done research on the country. And she had happily shared the information with Jude for whatever reason. Thank you, big sister.

Wizarding economics, was it? This was on a far larger scale than Evan had thought the money topic would center, and he found himself quite looking forward to it. He knew enough about the wizarding currency to get by, but as a muggleborn... there was still a lot about the economics of the world he was now apart that he didn't understand. He flipped to clean page in his notebook, prepping to take notes for the lesson. He was not so invested in the activity itself, as he pushed his empty crossword further to a corner in his workspace.

Hmm.. past and current currencies? They'd already mentioned a lot of the current types of money, so he decided to offer something about the muggle world. Raising his hand, he waited to be called on while internally debating between what he knew of the States or Korea. "In the U.S., in addition to coins like wizarding currency, they put the majority of their economical value into pieces of paper call dollars. There are multiple different bills, all with a photo of a different prominent figure in their history. There's a 1 dollar bill, a 5 dollar, 10, 20, 50 and 100. And that's still in addition to their coins which represent a fraction of a dollar." They had a lot of other types of currency too when you thought about it, given most people paid with a piece of plastic.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Finn gave his sister a big grin when she arrived, followed by a much smaller, less trustful smile for Jasper. He'd barely filled out any of the crossword (it was hard!) and didn't look up from it when Professor Holden started talking. He'd asked a question...or...several questions, by the responses people started giving. He was trying to catch up when he heard an unmistakable voice from nearly directly behind him.

He turned to look over his shoulder, gaping slightly at the girl from Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. He hadn't known she was there!! She was so quiet!! He immediately forgot what she'd actually said. Something about nuts, or knuts?

Then Holden was talking again, so Finn decided...he better try to pay attention. A decision that he soon regretted, because what sounded more boring than wizard economics? He sighed. And then raised his hand, because he did at least know an answer. And he had actually heard this question. "Goats," he said. Because people had used to trade goats and other livestock to pay for things...like bread. Or maybe clothes.

If he had a goat, he wouldn't trade it. Maybe that was why people didn't trade goats anymore and just used...money. Boring coins.

Perhaps it had been a subconscious self defense to not have entirely processed Mercer and his zany conspiracy theory regarding Hufflepuffs, something he and Milo had created, seeing as her own father was a Hufflepuff and could provide some references for them. Just as she could to remind her sister that dad was not the best finder whenever they played hide-and-seek. There was something amusing, as well as irritating, when Yukie requested more money from the professor. Was she not spoiled enough as it was? Mitsuki's quill went back into her inkwell and the tip of the quill back to her paper to darken some of the methodical scribbles along one of the horizontal lines.

What was startling, however, was the professor confirming Mercer's speculation, which threw the Ravenclaw into a bit of an identity crisis as well as her entire perspective on her friends and their perceptiveness. It was unfortunate that, from now on, she would not be able to consume pudding. It was one of her favorites. Nudging Mercer with her elbow, she nodded her head towards Yukie (a Hufflepuff) and straightened in her seat a bit while she rearranged her things.

She had allotted entirely too much emotion to this Hufflepuff revelation to be too bothered by the professor's response of 'in due time.' Mitsuki could not process in such abstract timeframes. In due time to whom? To what? Who set this due date? And what was a TedLupin Talk?

Entirely too many curiosities rolling around in her mind made it difficult to focus on what Professor Holden spoke to next, but thankfully a draft coming from beneath the crack between the floor and the door swooshed her thoughts back to her seat. Adding to her notes, Mitsuki elected to keep track of her 'Holden Knuts'. He had confirmed that she would receive one for her question and she had completed her crossword to her specifications (completion was completion) and she was physically present, so that was three for her for the time being. "I accept your bribery, professor," she announced calmly as she lowered her hand and folded it lightly over the other still rested on her desk.

As for the question posed, she raised her hand once again and offered a response. "Souls."

Noticing Finn had turned briefly and noticed her, she accepted his invitation and smiled oh-so-sweetly back at him. It was nice that he seemed to remember her.

Lily had to agree the boxes seemed small but that didn’t have to mean anything. Truly, who was to say that a portion of it was hidden deeeeep within the box – or that all of the coins had the same price as their listed values? Who was to say that one wasn’t worth more because of the time it was minted?

Now they had to talk magical and muggle currency. Alright.

She could do this. Miss future anthropologist was on the job.

Jude and Evan’s answers both got small nods of approval. Finn’s had even gotten a small grin and a chuckle. It was just so simply said that she had found it adorable. Raising her hand she waited to be called upon. ”in olden times – like Babylon old they used a dual-monetary system with the grain Barley and a silver coin called a shekel being used at the same time. The Shekel was the main unit and it was worth around 180 grains of Barley” she smiled to herself before adding ”there was also another coin with multiple shekels called a mina which was made sixty shekels ... so, that would have been quite literally a large bag of barley or more than one bag? Since it’d be roughly 10,800 grains” history was her jam. Even when it came to money.

SPOILER!!: notes

notes on currency
x Caribbean countries use the eastern Caribbean dollar – mid 1900s
x USA paper money & coinage
x goats
x barley – shekel – minas
x souls (???)

Nothing made Yukie Selina Rasting smile brightly as much as knowing she made someone else smile, even more so chuckle. And a professor at that, too! "I wouldn't mind a galleon, sir, just saying," she shared. It was always best to voice out a thought when it could potentially offer her a better deal, and a galleon was definitely worth more than a knut. But since Professor Holden didn't exactly admit to having money inside those boxes, it only left Yukie more curious and she gave each of the boxes in front a good squinting stare. If she could just give each of them a little peek....

Her eyes flew back to Professor Holden, giving the man an equally surprised look that she gave Mercer, for not denying the existence of the 'Order of the Badger'. What did that mean?! Why was there Hufflepuff and pudding slander going on in front of her very eyes?! Yukie looked back down at her crossword paper and added swirl doodles to it. She was going to pretend none of that happened, alright! Doodling was a worthwhile distraction.

It took a couple more turns of students sharing their answers before Yukie composed herself into a more comfortable state to join the discussion. The Hufflepuff didn't know anything regarding wizarding economics and money, but she knew home economics, more specifically in the form of baking. "Anything can probably count as currency, right, Professor? Didn't we trade goods and services before any form of money came along?" So, she could be exchanging a box of freshly-baked cookies for a new set of nail polish in this case. It sounded correct to Yukie. She would also do that, too. And...perhaps souls would count too, like Mitsuki mentioned. That was her sister's niche—the spooky and whatnot. "With that, I'd like to trade my answer for that Holden Knut, sir." She still liked galleons better, but the Hufflepuff stretched her arms out and opened her palms to accept her coin, all while smiling sweetly at the man. Pay up, Professor. Give me.

Violet was in a meditative mood today and had come in quietly. She was thinking about her N.E.W.T.S. and forgot to participate in the opening of class. So...the lesson seemed to be about money. Violet had never thought much about money--her family was wealthy, as far as she knew, and her grandfather and Uncle Heraclitus took care of all the family financial matters. Then there was that year with her father in New York--he hadn't had any money, so there was nothing to think about there, either.

Finally coming out of her thoughts, she raised a hand when they got to the second question. "I think wizards used to trade in Niffler's Fancy leaves before they started using galleons and sickles and knuts." Violet smiled to herself--leaves seemed pretty fragile things to use as currency.

SPOILER!!: catch-up
Desiree was all smiles as she skipped into the classroom. HIstory of Magic could be kind of boring - and confusing - sometimes, but she generally did well in it. It also helped that it was her mum’s old subject and it was taught by one of her favorite professors. Upon arrival, she’d greeted Professor Prince Eric with a smile and her best princess wave, then beelined for a seat next to Summer. Cue another princessy wave for the bestie!

It was only as she arranged her supplies on her desk that she noticed the crossword puzzle. Wow, that looked hard, but she’d give it a try! She looked at the first across clue. Hmm… she was really bad at math, but she knew galleons were gold. So that was probably the right answer… which made #1 down start with G. Probably Gringott. It would make sense for the founder’s name to be on the bank, right? For #3 across, she had nooo idea! She wished her dad was here! He was good at music, so he’d probably know that song.

She had to think a minute to figure out #5 across. She didn’t know anything about goblin allergies, but she guessed the answer was knut. It was the only form of wizard currency she knew that would fit! #6 and #7 across were really easy! Goblin and sickle, respectively. That just left #2 and #4 down, and that song she couldn’t figure out!

Before Desiree could riddle out the remaining clues, Professor Holden called time, and the answers appeared on the back of her paper. Darn! She wanted to get all the answers right by herself! With a slight pout, she turned her attention to the front as the lesson officially began. Wow, that was a lot of questions! She supposed the answer to the first one was probably money, given the crossword puzzle theme, but other people, like a lot of them, already said that! And she had no idea what the motto meant, but she recognized the language as Latin. Once again she wished her dad was here so she could ask him what the answer was!

She chose to concentrate on the second question instead. She tilted her head to one side, nearly dislodging the pink flower clip in her hair, to get a better look at the boxes up front. They were all different sizes and different colors… gold, silver, and lead? At first she thought there were probably galleons, sickles, and knuts until she saw the last box. She thought knuts were made of bronze, not lead! Did they make lead knuts for a time when that Burgock guy was allergic to bronze?

Then another idea occurred to her. What if the boxes contained wizard currency, but not necessarily all British ones? She knew that the bezant could be gold or silver, so maybe that was inside one of the boxes and whichever didn’t have the bezant had galleons or sickles? Then the lead box was… something else? She couldn’t think of any other types of wizard currency!

Not at all confident in her reasoning, Desiree remained silent, a decision she soon regretted when she heard what was really inside the boxes. So far she was doing horribly at this lesson! She hadn’t completed the crossword puzzle on her own, and she didn’t answer the last question. She only had one Holden knut so far! What if that was all she got? What if the end of class came, and she was the only one without enough money for a prize? That would be embarrassing! Her lip wibbled as she stared at her notes in front of her. She didn’t want that to happen, so she paid extra close attention to the next question.

This time she did know the answer! Her hand shot into the air. “The French wizarding currency is the bezant,” she said. “As for muggle currency, they use the euro, and before that, it was the franc The French Franc became national currency in 1795 and was revalued in 1960. The Nouveau Franc was worth 100 French Francs.” She could’ve gone into detail about the other denominations of past French muggle currency, such as the centime and décime among others, but there were so many of them! They’d be here alllll day if she did that, so she kept it short and sweet.

Much as Mercer was delighted that the Professor wanted more on his lecture topic of Evil Hufflepuffs (tm), that was really all Mercer could do. He needed Milo to be the expert, and Mercer was just the hype man. It was a weird empty land in his head, the space between 'Milo's conspiracy theories about Hufflepuffs deserve credit' and all the Hufflepuffs Mercer personally loved, which was why he was happy to reach out and take Yukie's hand when that little crinkle appeared on her forehead.

"I heard about this place that used big old carved stones as currency, but they're like... so big. Galleons are so big too. Why would anyone want to use currency that was inconvenient to carry in your pocket? If I have to wear special pants just to buy ice cream, it's barely even worth it." No, ice cream was always worth it. Mercer stuck his quill over his ear so he wouldn't lose it and trickled a line of ink down the side of his neck.

The Eastern Caribbean Dollar…” Simon drew a momentary blank as he tries to recall in which time period it was from. Ding! Ding! Lightbulb illuminated in his mind. “Aha fantastic!” A currency he hasn’t expected to hear but one he was glad to hear. He added that to the chalkboard.

Nam was next. He earned a nod from Simon as he offered his answer. “Yes! And they were all uniform and green versus other nation’s currencies. Talk about confusing.

Simon blinked at this answer. He wasn’t wrong…. Especially in different societies. “Especially in medieval times… Valid point.

He chuckled at Mitsuki’s response. Technically it was bribery in a form, he supposed. Simon was about to move on to the next student when she offered her answer which earned her a VERY concerned response from the father of three. Souls… “Uh… I suppose… especially if you make a deal with a dark wizard..” He added tay to the board and promptly added this student to the list of students he was concerned about. Merlin. The list was ever growing.

Give me.
If Simon EVER had a daughter like this student, he’d be wrapped around her little pinkie. The smile, the enthusiasm, the quick response was adorably too cute that the father of three was finding this difficult. How could he say no to such a question? She was ADORABLE.

Resist.

That is INDEED correct…

And then the next question came. His heart dropped. The real test of resistance and perseverance set in.

Must not fall…

It took almost every being in his body not to let him go all… y’know… UwU….

He steeled his heart and focused on the facts. Simon did, however, offer her a chuckle and smile. “You make a convincing point, Miss Rasting.” He flicked his wand and added another Knut on her desk.

The kid was good.

Simon smiled at this answer from Miss Blackthorne. Someone had offered a clue from the crossword. “Exactly Miss Blackthorne! Imagine trading precious plants today instead of gold coins…I know at least two Professors that would be in an uproar.

Simon smiled at Marchand’s response. She was rather thorough in response and, of course he wasn’t surprised. Miss Marchand had proven herself to be quite thoughtful and detailed in her homework. In fact, she offered not one but MULTIPLE answers. “Tres bien, mademoiselle,” he spoke in perfect French.

"I heard about this place that used big old carved stones as currency, but they're like... so big. Galleons are so big too. No, ice cream was always worth it. Mercer stuck his quill over his ear so he wouldn't lose it and trickled a line of ink down the side of his neck.
Simon was looking forward to a more detailed adventure of the Hufflepuff Cult but it seemed like they’d have to wait. “An interesting point. Money that large would be useless. Imagine if it were the size of a dragons egg… Would make for interesting conversation at the market…” He chuckled.

Once he knew everyone had been able to add to the discussion, he moved the lesson on to their mini activity. "We've got quite a good list of currencies up here." He awarded all with a Knut. "I'm going to keep these currencies up here.. but I'm going to add the conversion rates between a Sickle, a Knut, and a Galleon...." Simon quickly added this to the board before grabbing another chalkboard to write four items down. He continued to speak, making sure that he was PROJECTING so that all could hear. "You may recognise some of these famous and ordinary items. I've listed the cost of them in one form of wizarding currency. Your task at hand is to do some math and convert them."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude… sort of abandoned listening to his fellow classmates as something registered in his brain: instead of one Knut, he should have two - one for attendance and one for the first question. Yeah, two it was. It sort of sucked when you were super distracted but no harm done; the tiny issue had been resolved. With that out of the way, the Hufflepuff turned his attention to the lesson once more in an attempt to refocus as best he could. Sadly, he was still sort of lost when it came to the conversation Holden was having with a few students. Like… Order of the Badger? He was drawing a blank. It was probably just best that he paid attention to Holden alone.

Anyway, now he had three of those Knuts. Jude stared at the first board. Souls? Goats? Why did it sound like no one was taking this class seriously? But there was something more challenging to worry about: the conversion thing. It already seemed confusing to him and that was only because Jude’s heart really wasn’t into the lesson. Answering questions was one thing but actually using his brain to compute difficult stuff?

Still, he began copying the notes then set to work. Needless to say Jude his best to zome out everything around him.

SPOILER!!: Jude’s work

Conversion Rate
1 Knut = 0.03 Sickles = 0.002 Galleons
1 Sickle = 29 Knuts = 0.05 Galleons

17 x 10,000 = 170,000 Sickles ; 493 x 10,000 = 4,930,000 Knuts

2. Convert to Knuts: Moontrimmer Supreme - 196 Galleons, 6 Sickles

Mercer liked being taken seriously by Holden, and he gave the professor a very serious nod back. Yes, yes, big money was big inconvenient. Even for ice cream. He was unsurprised when their History of Magic class turned into a maths session. Everything Serious Holden did was right, so surely maths was right.

So. Mercer plucked the quill from behind his ear, sending a further dribble along his temple, and started scratching figures. Figures were kind of nice, actually, because they always did the same thing. Not as interesting as some things, but far easier to manage than working out what Suki was doing with salt on any given day or wending his way through a Milo solution.

10,000 galleons was 170,000 sickles and 4,930,000 knuts. That was a LOT of knuts to carry. Mercer drew a man with his pockets so full of knuts that they couldn't fit into the door of the ice cream parlor. Maybe he needed a really really good belt? How much would they pay for the rest of Sirius Black's body, if they were willing to spend all that money on just his HEAD?

Lily tilted her head and quickly took down notes on the currency. It was easier for her really to do them herself – a way to organize her thoughts as she learned about the history of currency. Well, magical currency. Converting them – wait she almost asked if he meant to convert them to muggle equivalents but that didn’t make sense did it? Not everyone here had access to muggle currency.

Right. She didn’t want to start from the beginning like everyone else. She was going to start with the beans. The first thing she did was calculate the beans to the amount of sickles it would cost for all of the packages.

Honestly who needed twenty five packets of Bertie Bott’s? Still she began calculating and bit her lip as she wrote down her answer. With a pause she decided to convert a few others while she was on a roll.

Milo was very much present, in body, if not in spirit. In actual fact, he'd slipped under the desk at the start of the lesson and stayed put in the name of the conscientious objection. Crosswords continued to hold the potential to be deeply unsettling.

The intention had been to reappear when the lesson started, but Milo had instead undergone a temporary disconnect - a shame, as this was a class he knew would benefit from his perspectives, if only his perspectives were treated with the seriousness they deserved. Also he knew Latin. Rose had seen to that.

A few heartbeats after drifting back to himself, Milo had identified the feet of his two friends, crawled across the room via the underdesk route, and pushed himself up to kneel between the both of them, looking distinctly disheveled. Unsure what they were supposed to be doing - see: the temporary disconnect - Milo stared at Mercer's parchment and then at the board, and sat back on his socked feet. Maths was not something he generally troubled himself with. Also it was all a scam and they were all being brainwashed and indoctrinated into The System™. Also also he was maybe a little disoriented still.

"Currency is control," he said quietly to his friends, his voice a low murmur. "Just a fabrication." The Hufflepuffs weren't behind this one - that was a different conspiracy - but the ruffled head of hair just visible at the edge of the desk was full of similarly sage wisdom. He could expand upon the treachery of the Hufflepuffs at any given moment (though by now also understood that to do so could put him in danger).

His wisdom may not fly with Mr Holden, but that was when it helped to have a Mercer who mostly did the things they were told to do.

It felt like an otherworldly sort of day when Mitsuki and her sister agreed on something, but remarkably this Ravenclaw found herself nodding before she realized it to her sister's response. There was a certain fallacy with the question as well, it was a fundamental truth that all things in life had a currency and all were simply willingly crawling into a box to only discuss money. She found it curious that so many seemed to tilt their heads, doubtful, of her answer. It was true that the casting of some elevated forms of magic required the soul for payment. To remain a ghost in this world also came with the cost of a peaceful soul. There were plenty of tangible examples.

"A Dark wizard is only correlation, not causation." she replied calmly before turning her attention back down to her paper for note taking. Unfortunately, the note taking did not continued for as soon as the list of items and their conversions appeared on the board...Professor Holden lost Mitsuki entirely. Though not as out of body as Milo had become, her quill dipped back into the inkwell and she began to draw a box of Bertie Bott's in the corner and some beans that had had the unfortunate pleasure of tumbling out from it. Another several thoughts crossed her mind as the notion of every flavor sweeties and their nuance consumed her thoughts, an her quill lazily danced over her parchment to write down two of them. Perhaps she could use them for her next column in The Quill. A smile graced her lips as she glanced to Mercer's paper and saw his drawing, which really only solidified the impracticality of knowing how many knuts for these larger galleon amounts.

Shifting her gaze down as Milo resurfaced, her lips puckered as though she were sucking on something incredibly sour. The look was one of fondness, and amusement, as his reminder mirrors some of her earlier sentiments regarding currency. Bribery. A Holden knut.

The likes of which she had entirely forgotten about in the pursuit of her every flavor prophecies.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Yes, Jude knew basic math but the problem was that his brain was all over the place. He peeked over at his younger sister, wondering how she was faring. He didn’t think that she’d approve of him getting every single one of these problems wrong. Jude swung his eyes back to his notes, frowning over the next which required his attention.

SPOILER!!: Jude’s work
