Today’s lesson is being held in its usual location of the History of Magic classroom located on the first floor. The layout however, as the students step over the threshold, is noticeably different. Professor Fergersnout’s desk, a wooden antique table is sat front and centre with the Professor, dressed a little more muted in a deep purple robe and black pointed hat, stood behind welcoming the students in. On the wall above her head is an emblem, if the students were to look closely enough they might have been able to determine the letters hidden beneath the Disillusionment Charm haphazardly placed on top of it minutes before their arrival.
The rest of the classroom is arranged into several semi circles, a gap left between so that they did not meet in the middle and effectively splitting the classroom into two. On the blackboard is written a message:
Quote:
Choose a side - left or right?
The instructions were pretty self explanatory, choose a side to sit on and remain there for the rest of the lesson. It didn’t matter which side they chose just so long as the split was fairly even. There were no right or wrong answers here.
OOC: Welcome to HoM! Remember this is not the students first lesson of the year, in fact it’s November. Please take a moment to refresh with the rules and expectations here if you need to. If you could title your post with which side your student has chosen, it’ll all make sense later.

History of Magic was a subject Aryan was decent at. True, it was no CoMC, Charms or Herbology but he did rather enjoy the lessons. He suspected that Fergersnout was a huge part of the reason. He loved coming to a lesson and seeing her in her cheery outfits. Today, it was no different. Ary thought the colour and style of the robe were pulled off smashingly by her. The second year gave the woman the usual finger wiggle-wave. The emblem got his briefest of attention before he read the instructions on the board.
Hmmm.
What an interesting one.
But he already knew his answer. Without hesitation, Ary moved towards the left side of the classroom to take a seat. Being left handed, he usually favoured that over right sides.

Another day, another dull History of Magic lesson. All Moe had to do was survive a few more months of these classes, and then he never had to take another history lesson again. His gran would be pleased that he managed to survive it for seven years, and everyone could move on.
"Morning," he grumbled with a small smile to Professor Fergersnout as he read the instructions on the board. Left or right? Ok. Easy enough. He had been about to move to the right side, but then noticed Ary, the only other student here, had already gone to the left side. Hmm. He could even it out, OR be a follower and go to the left.
Always a sucker under peer pressure, Moritz chose the left side.

Kion walked in with his bag over his shoulder. He was fascinated with history enough to continue the class for his N.E.W.Ts. He walked in, "Good day, Professor," Momentarily pausing to check the new layout when he noticed the writing on the board.
Left or right?
Maybe the choice would've been easier if he was only left or right handed. Instead, he shrugged before taking the closest seat on the right side. It seemed fitting to want to experience and question the right side when it came to history.
Truth be told, Drake didn't have strong feelings about History of Magic one way or the other. He didn't like having to read and memorize - that was generally more of Gil's speed - but Professor Fergersnout also made the classes for the most part interactive which meant he was learning things WITHOUT the book which made it not something he abhorred. But he also didn't really know why knowing the past was generally an important thing, and in fact preferred his general state of ignorance so class periods were really about as much as he learned or even spent thinking about the subject.
That would probably bite him in the rear in say.... 3 years, but that was future Drake's problem.
Today's Drake was carefree as he entered the classroom, not even looking at the board before he went to go and locate himself a seat beside Aryan. It was only once seated that he noticed the instructions (which did not change his choice) and he offered a smile in the way of greeting towards the Professor.

Eliza had unexpectedly started to enjoy History of Magic. She didn't like it quite as much as Potions, but it was low-key and usually didn't involve cute fluffy creatures or anything like that. As she walked into the classroom, she eyed the professor, giving her a silent nod of a greeting. She didn't pay much attention to the emblem, because as always, she knew they'd find out in time.
She paused as she looked at the two sides of the room. Left or right? That didn't matter much to Eliza. There were less people on the right side of the room, though, so not being the one to socialize or go find a huge group of friends to talk to, she headed right. She lifted her lips into a tiny smile to greet those already there. Outside of that, she got herself settled and waited for things to begin.
As Brandon entered the HoM classroom, he immediately noticed the instruction on the board. They had to choose between left and right. For him, this was an awfully tough question. Brandon, though he tended to use his right hand for things, was actually ambidextrous. His sister was left-handed, and his brother was right-handed. He associated right with discipline, rules, and morality, and left with creativity, curiosity, and nonconformity. Both had their places. He wasn't actively trying to avoid picking a side, but he just couldn't. He almost walked towards the right side, but then he looked back at the left side.
Brandon was frozen in the middle. Would he get in trouble for not picking? Why were they putting him on the spot? He would pick the right side if his life was at stake, but he wasn't fully convinced yet! He was so stressed out.

Surprisingly, Solomon actually quite enjoyed learning the History of Magic. Plus, Fergersnout was a favourite professor of his and she always made the lessons enjoyable. HOWEVER - this Slytherin had gotten out of the wrong side of the bed this morning and nothing could shift his mood.
After entering the classroom, he didn’t notice many details of the room, only deciding to look around when he noticed the students choosing a side of the room to stand at. For a split second he considered what it could mean to pick the correct side, but soon did not care.
He watched the boy, who he knew as Brandon, dither in the middle and wondered if he should help him out and drag him to the side with him. But remembering the kids nerves from the feast, Solly thought against it and left it for the professor to handle. Honestly he couldn’t be bothered with any sort of drama today.
Solly chose the right side, for no obvious reason, it was just random.

Etta enjoyed History of Magic as a subject as it helped her better understand and get in tune with her magical roots. Today she made her way to the class and gave the professor a brief and respectful bow before heading to select a seat.
Now the pending question in the youngling’s mind was: right or left?
On the left she glanced and noticed (Drake) so she gave him a small wave and smile.
On the right there weren't many. Hmm?
Taking in consideration that she was a right side of the brain type of person she turned to the right and took a seat. Curiosity bloomed in the young girl’s mind. What was the purpose of the seating arrangement? Were they going to hold a debate of some sort?

Bryony wasn't running late today, nor was she early as she made her way towards History of Magic. Right on time is what she would call it as she entered the room and found herself not one of the first students to arrive but also hopefully not one of the last. This could be thanks to her mum shooing her out of the barns minutes earlier but one may never fully know this unless they had seen the young blonde coming from that way. Or well, they just knew her well enough to know that she had been there during all of her free time today.
Luckily or unluckily for her, depending on who was asking and how one might look at it, she wasn't going to miss this class today. History of Magic wasn't the easiest subject for her but that didn't mean the second year disliked it. In fact that was far from the truth, she enjoyed the class a lot and did look forward to whatever they might be learning each lesson.
Right away the layout of the room was taken in. Curious. As was the instructions on the board for a side to be chosen. Left or Right. Very curious. Now usually Bryony would immediately go towards the right because.. now this was very easy. Bryony was always right. Ahem. Even when she wasn't, she was. However there was an issue with her decision making process today.. Aryan was already here and he was sitting on the left side! What to do?
She did the only thing she could do. With a bright smile on her face and a finger wiggle wave directed at Professor Fergersnout. "Hello, Professor. I like your purple robes." Purple was a nice color. It wasn't pink but it was still very pretty. Hurrying along now she took a seat beside Aryan and gave him a gentle nudge of her shoulder against his. Drake got a little finger wave. See? She was being nice! Hi everyone else they could all get finger waves too!

Zara didn't notice anything unusual today, nope, she was too absorbed in noticing other things, like the professor's robes and hat. "And nice hat," she complimented, lightly following the person directly in front of her and taking a seat behind them on the left side of the room.

History of Magic may not have been the most popular class at Hogwarts. Alissa knew that many of her classmates found it a bit boring at times, but she generally enjoyed it. She liked learning about the past, about where they came from, and the times that came before. And sometimes the past was like a story. Everyone had been real people with their own lives but since they were far enough removed they sort of felt like characters.
"Hello Professor," she greeted as she walked into the classroom before fully taking it in. Once she did, she was intrigued by the formation of the desks. She thought the circle was kind of fun. The only problem was that now she had a choice to make. Left, or right. Based on the fact that they were specifically prompted to choose a side she could only conclude that it was going to be significant in some way later on. But she had no way of knowing what consequence her choice would have, so she would just have to do it mostly at random. Liss glanced around to see who was sitting where, deciding that she would make her decision just based on who she wanted to sit by. She spotted Solomon sitting on the right side and decided that she wanted to sit by him because, well, look at him. As she was walking over to the right side it did occur to her that she could technically look at his face better if she was on the opposite side of the room, but she had already made her decision. She took a seat in the circle by the Slytherin and gave him a friendly smile. "Hey."

History of Magic was a subject that Nadia had mixed feelings about. She tended to favor the classes that had them more active so it was entirely on how the lesson was handled she supposed. Not that she shirked in any of her studies. The Gryffindor was enough like her elder brother for that. Heading to the First Floor when it was time, she stepped into the classroom and paused into the door as she took in the differences to the room. Her eyes finally alighting on the sign that gave them all a choice that made her wonder just what was gonna develop from that choice.
Oh boy.
“Hello Professor,” she greeted the woman. Nadia then looked to see who had already made what choice. Her brother and Briony were together of course…on the left…the duo getting a polite smile from them. There were a decent number there with them, but a decent number on the other side. And poor Brandon seemingly caught undecisive in the middle. “How about we both go to the right…” she said as she came up beside her yearmate. The girl offering the option for someone to make his decision for him if it helped. He could always say no.

Aside from Charms, History of Magic was Desiree’s favorite subject. Funny how that turned out… her top two favorite subjects just happened to be the two that her parents once taught. The dark-haired Hufflepuff made her way to the classroom in her usual chipper mood, though there was nothing usual about the classroom layout. She eyed the semicircle with a mildly intrigued expression. Interesting choice…
She turned to Professor Fergersnout with a friendly smile and wave. “Hello, Professor,” she greeted. “I like your robes. Such a lovely shade of purple!” But she didn’t dwell on fashion for long before the instructions on the board caught her attention. Choose a side? Why? Were they going to divide the room in half to debate some historical topic? She couldn’t think of any other reason!
Desiree was inclined to go left, as she was left-handed - and so were her mother and father! Taking her seat, she waved to the other people seated on the left (Ary, Drake, Bryony, and Zara). And waves for everyone else as well, “Hi!” she greeted her classmates.

Anna did not make the best centaur or giant, but she did think that she made a pretty decent History of Magic student. Minus memorizing dates, that is. She could remember events and important characters in said events, but the timeline of all these things that were the foundation upon which each and everyone of them stoof today were usually lost on the Hufflepuffle. Also, by some MIRACLE, the fifth year had shown up early for today's lesson and if that was not worth a large bowl of ice cream at the end of the day she did not know what else was!
No, that was a lie. She could think of plenty of other things that warranted a bowl of ice cream.
Skipping into the room and completely missing the instructions on the board, her honey molten gaze danced upon each face present until it fell upon Solomon and her skips immediately pivoted in his direction. Naturally this also meant that she skipped right on by Brandon (who seemed to be as twitchy as a grumpy kneazle in a room full of self rocking rocking chairs) and Nadia (who was being kind and encouraging like always). "You both can come stand by me and Solomon if you'd like," she invited, the entire point of making an active choice as to where one stood completely lost somewhere in the mass of bouncy curls. Not that it would have seemed like such a hard decision even if she had noticed the instructions - ever lesson you entered and picked somewhere to sit or stand so reaaaaaaaaally was today ANY different?
The power of words, right? It was interesting.
Coming up right alongside Solomon, Anna slipped her arm through his and smiled brightly at his modestly grumpy resting prince face. "Hi!" Her warm gaze trickled over towards the professor and she leaned over to whisper to her Slytherin bestie. "Professor Fergersnout seems more serious today...doesn't she? Such a dark color robe and hat and all...you KNOW..." By now her whisper was barely that. "...I read about an ancient set of purple robes that were a Dark artefact...and artefacts are historical..." And Professor Fergersnout ALWAYS committed to a role...
OH! Alissa was here too! Anna gave her a big wave with her arm not looped around Solomon's.

Though it wasn't something he often admitted out loud, Ezra actually enjoyed the subject of history. A lot, actually. It was fascinating learning about all kinds of crazy events that led up to now, y'know? And made him think about how things they did now that would affect the future. Wild stuff.
Plus Professor Fergersnout was fun. He was always a fan of professors making a subject both interesting and entertaining.
"Hi, Professor!" He offered a grin as he entered. A quick glance at the board clued him in to the conundrum they were apparently faced with. Which side to sit on? The left side seemed okay, but the right side...
The right side had Anna! Seemed like an easy decision then.
At least until the next second when he also spotted who she was with. And awfully close to. With her arm around Solomon's.
Huh. Well. That was... Why did he feel not as good all of a sudden?
...Anyway.
He was fine. The left side seemed like a good side to be on anyway.
Ezra didn't entirely pay attention to where he sat, but he ended up in a seat next to Zara.

Fergersnout didn’t have too many rules when it came to her classroom but perhaps one of the most important was to arrive at her classroom on time. Young master Atreyu-Rehman was often one of the first to turn up. For this reason he received a brief nod of the head and a welcoming smile.

Ah. Mister Schultz certainly needed to refresh himself on the last rule of her classroom, frowning was absolutely not accepted. “Good morning Mr Schultz, perhaps we could retry that entrance with a little more pep?” She raised her eyebrow, or at least she attempted to but her eyebrows did not work independently of one another and they sort of knitted into a perplexed expression.

Thankfully Mr Ingebretson had started to even out the sides a little, she was concerned that the concentration of students to one side were going to be skewed. “Good morning!” she smiled back to the sixth year.

The next few students didn’t make a verbal greeting but that didn’t mean that she was going to ignore them. Instead she tilted her pointy hat at them each politely as they entered the classroom. She watched as they picked left and then right and right again. Ah. There goes her even split.

Fergersnout was pretty certain that there was nothing remotely difficult about making the decision between left and right, in fact it would make no difference with the level of education or opportunities the students would be receiving. “Mr Fox, you are causing a bit of a traffic jam behind you. There’s no wrong decision here, choose left or right.” Instead he looked a little like a fox in the headlights. Thankfully Miss Atreyu-Rehman had taken the matter in hand and guided Mr Fox to one side with her. “Perfect!” she nodded gratefully at the young Gryffindor.

The Professor was always grateful for receiving compliments about her attire, whether they were genuine or not. She never took great care in being fashionable to the times but she did enjoy expressing herself with her choices. “Thank you girls” she beamed. “Not quite so cheery this morning but the reason for that will become clear later.” Still she avoided plain black robes even when taking a more ‘serious’ role.

Miss Walles might have been attempting to conceal her words to her friend but Fergersnout was very familiar with the concept of a stage whisper, one which sounded like it was quiet and yet the sound reverberated enough for the audience to hear. “I can assure you that this robe is of my own collection and not a dark artefact Miss Walles. Have you ever seen a Dark Wizard look so ~fabulous~” she chortled.

Miss Marchand, Fergersnout had grown to understand, was a bit of a history buff herself when it came to fashion choices. “Purple is my favourite” she commented. It was the colour of regality after all.
With the clock ticking over to 10am, Fergersnout tapped her wand on the desk in front of her and awaited the muffled conversations to die down. “Alright, settle down my young Chickpeas.” No she could not explain where on Earth she got the nicknames from, they just sort of popped into her head. “I’m glad to see that most of you are bright and cheery for this time on a Tuesday morning.” A few clearly needed refreshing on her classroom rules.
“You might have noticed that the classroom is a little different today. If you haven’t then I think you need to revisit the phrase ‘constant vigilance’” she chortled. “The reason for this shall be explained in due course but to start I’d like to ask a few questions of you and see whether you can figure it out yourselves.” The disillusionment charm on top of the emblem had started to somewhat dissipate and a sort of W shape was coming through. Or was it an M?
“Can you each name me an example of a governing type body found in the Wizarding World?” Anything from the largest organisations to the smallest, Fergersnout always appreciated out of the box thinking.
OOC: Thank you for joining! Any late arrivals now will be dealt with IC consequences but there’s still time to join in if you’d like. Just one answer per student please for the question.
Maria was sitting next to her boyfriend Kion on the right side of the classroom doodling on a piece of parchment trying to draw the the curious emblem she couldn't place over Professor Fergersnouts head. She had slipped into the classrom about 5 minutes before 10 am with her bag slung over shoulder, having greeted Professor Fergersnout accordingly with a bright smile.
As the lesson got underway Maria stopped drawing and turned her full attention to Professor Fergersnout. Govering bodies in the wiarding world. Well there as the ministry of magic, but that felt like something most would say. She had heard her dad's mention another organisation, if she could just remember the name. As she remembered Maria raised her hand, and answered with a smile pursing her lips "There is the International Confederation of Wizards. Its an international governing body that oversees all wizarding countries in the wizarding world my dad's have said."

Professor Fergersnout had excellent taste in fashion! Purple was one of Desiree’s favorite colors too, second only to pink. But now wasn’t the time to dwell on fashion. Class was starting! Neatly arranging her notetaking supplies on the desk in front of her, she face front and paid close attention.
She tilted her head to one side, peering at the symbol on the board. That looked like a letter M… was that the symbol for the Ministry? If it was, how did that fit into the room layout? She still suspected a debate… maybe something to do with the Ministry? She was still pondering that thought when she heard the first question.
Right off the bat an answer occurred to her, and her hand shot into the air. “The Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France, or Ministry of Magical Affairs of France has been the French Wizarding government since 1790,” she said when called on. Her dad used to work there many years ago! The more she thought about it, the more the founding date stuck in her mind. She wondered what was the French governing body before that, and did the French Revolution have something to do with the Ministère’s establishment?

Charlie was still a wheezy little chickpea, and it seemed to be getting worse as winter approached and the weather got colder. That was no big surprise, really, and he was still getting by with his muggle face mask. For all the good it was doing.
He'd dropped carelessly into a seat on the left side of the room, giving it zero consideration whatsoever, because there was nothing to base his decision on. Could have been anything they were picking, really. With any luck, they were debating something and the side they sat would determine the side of the argument they'd be making. Charlie was good at that, arguing any side to an argument like he really meant it, but obviously had no idea if that was what they'd be doing. That was the thing about Madam Snout; the only thing you could predict about her lessons was that they were never all that normal. A debate wasn't outside the realm of possibility.
When things kicked off and Snout asked her first question, Charlie's hand went up. Just before he spoke, his eyes caught on the emblem on the wall as it gradually started to appear. He stopped, gave a small cough, and decided to go for a different answer altogether. "The Board of Governors. I mean, you'd think so, anyway. What with the name." And he left it at that, before his lungs found too much to complain about.

For once it didn't take long for Emma to realize the setup in the history of magic classroom was slightly off. They weren't ever split in half like this so early in the lesson - perhaps they were playing a game that involved two teams? Well she supposed it was better than partners. It wasn't that Emma disliked partners, but quite the contrary she LOVED partner-work. She just always had a hard time picking just ONE person she wanted to work with. She was actually missing Professor Fergersnout's bright attire, but so long as there were no spider friends, it wasn't bothersome. As far as which side? Being the only girl Montmorency kid, she was always told a woman is always right. And while she wasn't a woman yet, she made her way over to the right side, only to realize Bryony and Ary were on the left side. Well, she had Anna and Maria .... and Eliza and others too.
Governing body found in the wizarding world. She knew this one. "There's the Magical Debate team here at Hogwarts. Not really a governing body, but I suppose it's as close to like a student council maybe." They took sides and like in a governing body and debated things so it kind of worked?

Anna's presence did not go unnoticed. How could it? It was always a very bright and cheerful presence. One that Alissa was always happy to be around. She grinned at the Hufflepuff and waggled her fingers at her in greeting. "Hi Anna!" Shortly after her arrival Professor Fergusnout called the class to order for the lesson to start so she turned her attention to the front of the room.
When Professor Fergusnout asked about wizarding governing bodies, Alissa's first thought was, of course, the American wizarding government. While it didn't technically govern her any more, it had for her entire life until a year ago. She raised her hand. "In America, there's the Magical Congress of the United States of America. It's led by a President, not a Minister. And all of the representatives are elected. American muggles are governed by a Congress too, but they have two different bodies while the magical congress only has one." She knew a fair bit about the government because her dad was a lawyer, but she figured the professor wasn't looking for every detail she knew so she left it at that.

His mood naturally brightened at the appearance of Anna by his side, although strangers probably wouldn’t be able to tell that from his face. He had no doubt in his mind that she wouldn’t end up coupled up with him anyway - in fact, what had taken her so long?
Solly leaned in to listen to Anna’s assessment of the professor’s appearance. “Can’t say I’d really noticed.” He said back, a little louder than she had, before widening his eyes at Fergersnout catching the whispers.
What he HAD noticed, however, was Ezra’s weird arrival. Solly wondered for a split second if he was upset that Anna had chosen to stand by him, but he shrugged that off because it sounded ridiculous. “What’s his problem?” More whispering going on here. Oops.
Oh, yeah, he had forgotten they were actually in class right now.
The first question had Solomon completely stumped, though, so he shrugged his shoulders.

Ary inadvertently causing peer pressure? He would have been surprised if he knew that this was why Moe chose the left side of the classroom. When Drake came in, he honestly expected his friend to choose the right because Ary had gotten it in his head that the other second year was trying to make other friends and hanging out too much with Ary wasn’t going to help. So, he was secretly happy when Drake chose to sit beside him. Bry, on the other hand, he fully expected her to be wherever he was. Not because he was being full of himself but because that was just how she was when it came to him. “Hi,’’ he whispered to her in response to the nudge. And he liked it when she was being nice to Drake; neither of his friends had no idea just how much he was unwilling to say or do anything that would jeopardise that. Catching Nadia’s smile, he returned it with one of his own then gave Desiree a little wave.
Chickpeas?
Ary grinned to himself. He just never knew what interesting thing the professor would call her students next. The slight change in the emblem up above made him direct his gaze up there for a couple of seconds. But then he forgot about that as he raised a hand. “There’s the Wizengamot, which is the British wizarding world’s high court of law.”
"Okay. Thanks." Brandon allowed Nadia and Anna to guide him to the right with no resistance. Still, he was deeply unhappy about it. How was he supposed to know which way was the best way?? Why should he be forced to choose between two sides that he wasn't fully informed about? He chose to be as close as possible to the left that someone on the right could be to being on the left without actually being on the left... because what if the right side was actually the wrong side the whole time and it was a trick?? What if this was about critical thinking??
Brandon's heart was beating at about 200 miles per hour, so it was hard to come up with an answer to the question. "Um, peer pressure and social norms. Because they guide how people act, even though it's not a real organization." Like how they governed his choice of a side, or how people all followed certain unspoken rules because of what had mutually been decided as moral or correct.
Despite several minutes having gone by, Brandon was still trying to figure out what the trap was, what governing body was being discussed today, and whether he'd picked the correct side of it or not. So he wasn't actually paying the most attention, and just looked extremely uncomfortable.
