Default HoM: Lesson 1 - Wizarding Tournaments

For a fun change to celebrate the commence of a new term, Professor Holden had been trying to change up each of his lesson’s locations while the weather was still pleasant. He thought it was important to take advantage of the good weather before the greyer, colder days rolled through.

It’s a crisp autumn morning and Holden has selected the Hogwarts Grounds for his lesson. Today, he is standing in front of the entrance to a magnificent emerald green hedge maze. To his left, there is an ornate marble goblet with sapphire flames dancing at its mouth. Further left of that goblet is a temporary table with scraps of parchment and quills. Take note of the sign, dear student.

Quote:
“Feeling curious to try your hand? Write your name and give it to the goblet. Enter at your own risk. You MUST be of age to enter.”
OOC: AAAAND WELCOME TO THE FIRST HISTORY OF MAGIC CLASS OF THE TERM.
Simon and I are SO excited to have you here.

We'll leave the class open for arrivals for the next 24 hours before I officially kick off the lesson. I will note that my timezones may be funky with this lesson - I will be headed to Ireland tomorrow night but I will keep you all informed of lesson timing!

If you are not familiar with HoM Rules and Expectations, please familiarise yourself with them here!

P's you are also welcome to put a piece of parchment in the goblet if you have a charrie that is not of age. Just watch out for the goblet

"You don't want to do courage? Integrity?" Integrity was much less exciting to watch in a contest, frankly. Like people pulling out chairs for each other or something. "OH, okay, like... what if it's a trick? On the way to the next task, you run into someone who needs a hand. And if you stop to help them, and effectively through all of their 'oops, I just keep dropping these packages' issues, then you get top marks. But if you blow past them to the event, for your own personal gain, then you lose."
......badge of honor.

Right.

Atlas' brow arched and he leaned back just a little bit to try and take in the full, er, look that Mercer was going for. He honestly could not say that he 'got' it, but if the kid felt good and confident looking like he had just come tumbling out of a fireplace then...he could look like he came tumbling out of a fireplace. As long as he kept those ash covered hands to himself and not all over this Gryffindor's robes then everything would be fine. "Okay then, you do you, mate," he nodded with a small smile.

(yes, very SPooOoOky, Mercer. Just a tip toe ahead of your couch attempt)

"Courage just seems too obvious," he replied with a small shrug. "At least the traditional sense of it with fighting dragons and showing active nerve and whatever. Courage comes in more forms than those that require brute force and all that." All types of courage that he did not think he possessed, but that was a spiral for another day. Atlas was kind of advocate against testing people when they did not know they were being tested (notice what he says and not what he does in this case, please and thank you), but since they would be the gamemakers in this case and not likely the ones to actually do it...he had no problem with it. It was all speculator anyway and, at the end of the day, they needed to show Professor Holden something with a direction and at least some thought. "That could work, actually. Have them enter tunnels that they are told will lead them to their next task, which isn't a lie because the moment they cross the threshold they are being led to their next task. Contestants just will assume its at the end of the tunnel and not...something along the way. Kind of like that one fairy tale...the one with the beast and the fairy and whatever. Offering aid at the expense of your own victory transforming something on site into the clue for the next round." Fairy tale book knowledge brought to you by one Lisa Nam. "The end of the tunnel actually just leads to the stands where everyone is waiting and signals the conclusion of the task. Utilizing time, setting a limit, would add a sense of urgency too. Something long enough not to elicit suspicion."

Atlas wasn't so sure about boxes and the like, but they were still workshopping.

Ravenclaws always had so many questions, don't they? Henry didn't mean that to be judgmental, it was more of like an observation really. Henry was more than willing to answer them as long as he knew the right answers, especially for educational ones, so he was starting to feel a little bit conscious as the first year asked more questions. He looked at Professor Holden briefly, just in case the man wanted to answer. Though he also thought Professor Holden wasn't the type of teacher that would bar a student from helping a student out. "I guess it was allowed, if she wasn't disqualified. But also becoming an Animagus is a skill that can be learned through training, so it's not an innate ability that would give her an unfair advantage over the others." At least, in Henry's mind, there was no unfair advantage considering the purpose of the IMPS, which was designed to test the competitors' skills after all. That would be a whole different matter if one of them were a Metamorphagus. So Valerie was not only able to flex her super cool transformation skills, but that skill itself also helped her get through the task much more efficiently, he supposed.

And then Henry looked back at Holden because SORRY, SIR, HE'S DONE TALKING THE FLOOR IS YOURS NOW FOR REAL. He was going to work on the activity now!

Text Cut: Cousin Karleigh <3
Quote:

But because Karleigh felt history only really came alive when she could hear the stories about it. And it might be possible to hear these stories first hand, since it seemed awful lucky that the woman was in Diagon Alley. She really wished she had known beforehand though. "I wonder what she meant too.." Karleigh wasn't lying when she said she didn't know a whole lot about IMPS, so she wasn't sure what that implied. "Do you think there was something bad about the competition? Like.. cheating, or something?" That was curious and now it really piqued her interest. Even more reason to talk to Valerie Grey. But she nodded emphatically when Henry mentioned adding it to their to-study-more list. That was another nice thing about having cousins in the same year. Built-in study group for the important exams.

But back to the activity. Karleigh thought for a moment as Henry offered his ideas as well. "I think one of the most important values is compassion, plus it's really underrated." At least that was her opinion, but that wasn't what they had to do. She was still throwing out ideas in this brainstorming part. "Yeah, creativity too," she agreed with a nod. "Maybe whatever task it is, they have to think outside the box to solve it, not just use magic." But magic would probably also be an important part since they had to use those skills too. "A unicorn!" she said suddenly when her cousin suggested a few creatures. But surely he knew how much she still loved unicorns, so she couldn't quite help herself. And she laughed at herself a little.

But then she realized if they were testing compassion and had a unicorn involved, it might mean that the unicorn was in danger for a person to save and her face fell at that realization. Okay but it didn't have to be that either. "Um.. maybe someone has to find a unicorn.. or... does it have to be something dangerous?" She wasn't sure she liked the idea of that anyway. "Oh! What if the contestant is in a maze like this and they have to find the unicorn before time runs out. They could use clues like unicorn hair... and well, there could be a simulation of danger.." She tapped her chin, trying to think about how to not make it as lame as it was sounding coming out of her mouth.

Even if the IMPS basically fell under recent history, only being an event that happened sixteen years ago and both he and Karleigh were wee little one year olds, Henry knew there was a lot more they ought to know outside the stuff they learned in class. If there was anything Henry learned about history in general, it was that nobody can never get a full account of anything because not every detail could be recorded with that much accuracy. There's just always more. "Maybe? I guess aside from how awful it'd be to see a loved one almost frozen inside a locked cage, I wouldn't be surprised if there had been any cheating to be honest." Henry doubted the 1994 Triwizard Tournament was cheat-free, like most competitions unfortunately. Such is the world they lived in, with some people already a dozen steps ahead in the uneven playing field. "Only Miss Gray can tell us." The Hufflepuff imagined Miss Valerie Gray turning into some kind of celebrity again this summer, following this lesson, if students came visiting her shop to ask about the competition. She'd probably hate it. Henry would, if he had to relive repressed memories.

Before Henry could mentally deep-dive into his imaginative thoughts, he was able to catch himself and bring himself back to the task at hand. Compassion was definitely something he would also like to see from any competition, considering with the world right now could really use some (read: so much) of it. "Compassion and creativity together, I like that," the Hufflepuff agreed with a smile. He had also taken a moment to retrieve his notebook and self-inking quill so he could jot down their ideas. Compassion... creativity... magical skill... outside the box. The unicorn suggestion came mostly as an afterthought for Henry, but he also knew that Karleigh liked the creature so he was glad he had mentioned it, even if it hadn't been intentional. "We gotta make the unicorn the star of the show!" It was a must now!

With that, Henry wrote a big 'UNICORN' on the page and even drew a star around it, taking centre stage in their hypothetical tournament task. The more their plan seemed to become more solid, the more hyped he was as he wrote more stuff down his notebook. "I love the idea of having clues. Perhaps there could also be a lot of forks in the path or hedges, and they'd have to tell which animal footprints are the unicorn's, along with another neat clues that'd test how quickly they'd make a decision. Hopefully the right one." Also Henry wasn't always a fan of danger. It was thrilling as a concept now, but he'd hate the real stress of it all. He wouldn't want to die in a silly competition, okay! "Simulation! Yes, I like that better than real danger. Maybe just something that would push the contestant forward," Henry said, looking down at his scribbled up page of ideas and thinking. It had 'maze', 'unicorn hair', and 'time limit' written down along with the previous ideas. "Aha! What about some kind of mist? It would slowly and creepily make its way around the maze, which the contestant needs to avoid, but it's not actually dangerous mist. It's just normal mist, but they wouldn't know that so they'd think it's a huge threat, enough to make someone run when they see it. And for compassion, maybe once they locate the unicorn, they'd have to be patient and understanding with it before they can approach because I can only imagine how stressed the unicorn would be or something?" Compassion definitely extended for creatures too, and all beings at that. Somehow this entire task idea they've created so far was both exciting AND truly bonkers. How fun.

It wasn’t that Hooper didn’t think Arden had a valid point because she did, everything was just so much cooler if it was super dangerous. The more danger, the braver someone had to be and more character they had to show. “I guess. I mean it doesn’t have to be deadly but maybe appear to be deadly? Like a ruse maybe? What about we make the task appear to be deadly but in reality, it’s more of a puzzle under pressure?” The cooking competition on top of the mountain did sound deadly though and the start of a good idea but it just…sounded boring! There was no magic in cooking. It was just a muggle skill! Not really worthy of a Triwizard tournament task in his opinion.

Before he could argue this further however, Arden had leaned in and started whispering. Not wanting to miss whatever it was that she was mumbling, Hooper gave a shifty glance around before leaning closer to her, his back towards the professor and the other students. Listening intently, Hooper considered the likely hood of her ideas as she spoke but was hesitant to answer at first. Eventually, he whispered back, “I mean, we could have been poisoned at any point really. It’s just strange that we both woke up like this. Why us?” Turning for a moment at the mention of Milo’s name, Hooper’s eyes settled on the boy for a moment over his shoulder before he turned back to Arden. “I woke up like this too. It seems a bit of a stretch though. Wouldn’t house elves have rules to follow? I mean, even if they had to follow some like to poison someone, you’d think they could say no to some things like positioning students or they wouldn’t be allowed here”.

Turning suddenly as he heard the voice of another adult, Hooper gave a small start as Healer Hernandez strode towards the group through the maze. Upon being questioned, Hooper quickly shoved his hands in his pocket and looked down, his foot instantly cooking the grass underneath him. Obviously they were going to be blamed for this. “We didn’t do this! We both just woke up like this sir. I don’t know about Arden but I’ve only ever had food from the great hall so unless the house elves have poisoned us, I have no idea why this has happened,” a slightly annoyed yet frazzled look across the third year Gryffindor’s face. After shooting a shifty over at Arden, he continued quickly, “Whoever did this must have been useless anyway. If it was some kind of potion or poison or whatever, it didn’t work.” Inspiration struck as he finally put two and two together to get four. “If it isn’t a house elf, it must surely be a Gryffindor and they must be useless at potions.”

Well said Mr Hembree,” nodded Simon. He had chosen o remain silent and let his student answer the question. It was important to him that the students felt empowered to answer questions when they knew the answer. It helped build confidence.

Ah… Javier was here. He was relieved. Simon noticed the look Javier had sent him and returned it with a grateful smile. He was quite happy that his coworker was here for he had FAR more knowledge to troubleshoot the ongoing chicken crisis. Simon could speculate but he knew it was handled appropriately in Javier’s more than capable hands. “Thanks,” he said to his colleague before glancing at Arden and Hooper before leaving them to check on the other students. Hopefully whatever happened to them was reversible.

Simon was quite pleased with everyone’s progress. He had spent his time walking around the room, listening and observing his student’s at work. He loved to see them collaborating, bouncing ideas off of each other, and troubleshooting together. It was refreshing. He loved activities where he saw their creative juices flow. He couldn’t wait to see these theoretical trials come to life!

He called the class together. “Alright! It’s time to finish up the design portion of our lesson.” He paused, giving the class a few more minutes to tie things up before continuing on. “Now you will have to find a partner if you don’t have one. What I’d like you to do is to “simulate” your trial. One of you will be a contestant and the other person will be the guide who will provide the scene in where you stand and the obstacles ahead. You’ll have an hour to make it through the simulation.
OOC: Hi folks! Continue to work on your trial by yourself or in a pair. Next part of our lesson is the Main Activity. It does require you to work in a group. We are going to test out the designed trials! In this case, we will have one character act as the “Narrator” and guide/test the student through the trial. This is similar to how the Narrator RP Account acts in our RPG. You will have 3-4 days to complete this!

Aria paused, gazing in Holden’s direction. Ah! She should have known that was what the man had in store for them! Dear Merlin! This was going to be so interesting, given what she and Caes had come up with for their tasks! Also, this was the PERFECT time for brother dearest to take ‘revenge’ on her for using him as a model for her many clothing designs {sometimes she felt that she, er… bullied him a bit}. But this was a challenge and Aria positively ADORED challenges. She wiggled perfect eyebrows. “What say you, Caes? Shall I be the fearless competitor and you be my trusted guide?”

"Maybe some sort of puzzle or obstacle course that is easy with people but requires careful rearrangement of objects to get through yourself?" Maybe something with pressure plates, or with 'lava'(hopefully not real) that rises in the room? "We could also have something involving incapacitating or avoiding a dangerous creature to get past it..." Ash sighed. "What are your ideas for the right level of danger, and what do you think the competitors should do to help people at the start of the task?" She wanted to hear Keigh's ideas too, of course. Designing things like this was easier with a team to brainstorm(and improve on each other's ideas).
Keighley nodded her head in agreement with Ashley's reasoning. "I like that. However when you're faced with the chance of helping or leaving the other person behind, you won't know what the obstacle up ahead is yet so therefore you won't know if that the person you're saving or leaving will be of help to you or not. What if you saving them will only make the next obstacle even more difficult?" Just saying. That could be something that runs through the competitors mind and it's a good thought but personally not one that she would care about. "Ummm... I kinda like the lava idea. Like the floor is lava? You have to get from point A to point B before everything is covered in lave... maybe collecting something along the way and it's much easier to get with that other person?" As for what they needed to get she wasn't sure yet. "That I'm not so sure. Maybe they are tied up somewhere or being protected by something." This was the part they might need to work on a bit more.

Before they could really do much more brainstorming Professor Holden was speaking again. This time about the main activity and how they needed a partner. No problem there, she had one. They were going to play out what they had come up with? Uhhh, this should be interesting! "Would you rather be the competitor of the guide?" Keigh looked over at Ashley to see if she had a preference on what she would like to do. Either was fine with her.

Mercer was PLEASED that Atlas was listening to his ideas. Mostly because his ideas were a bit grandiose and flighty and impossible, but also Atlas was older and practical. Knew stuff. They were still spitballing when the professor told them it was time to move on to putting their plan into practice. Did that mean they were going to put THIS plan into practice?

"I know it's not a very GOOD idea yet, but you want to be the fairy or the beast? I don't care either way." Mercer was sweating ash into his eyes, leaving him blinking madly and running tear rivulets through his ash mask.

Caes was just about okay with the plan when it came to running through both fire and a swamp. Then it was the next part of the activity. Oh, they were going to reinact their plan? Huh... Caes wondered how this would go, but they could surely wing it, right?

"Sure," Caes said. Now they just had to mentally note what was ahead. 1. Defeat a Venomous Tentacula. 2. Defeat dummy replicas of loved ones. 3. Run through a swamp & fire. Check. "Wait, does this mean I'm the Venomous Tentacula?" How fun, he'll get to 'chase' his little sister. Welp, better get ready.

Tasha thought about it again. Now that she knew they would have to actually simulate their task, she wanted to make sure the puzzle could be solved within their hour time limit. Actually testing out the challenge was definitely a problem. Luther didn't want to 'face' his fears in front of so many people. That definitely would not be cool. "Yes, that's a great idea. Plus I don't think we can make up any other part of the challenge." He then added, "Which one of us will be the contestant by the way? Based on that we can determine which fear we will use."

Even Aria was a little hazy on the details regarding the simulation but did that bother her? Not in the slightest. She was just here to have fun and learn a thing or two. In any case, it was a proper little bonding exercise for the siblings; this little she-Snake was going to have all the fun. Oh yes, she was. One of the best things about teaming up with Caes was that they rarely squabbled over decisions, they were usually ready to back the other up.

“I think so? Not that there’s going to be much of a challenge for you. You sorta look like a Tentacula.” Aria giggled cheekily then skipped ahead and away from Caes. “Don’t go easy on me!” Remember… challenges were her thing! She was quite prepared and ready with her wand in hand for the Tentacula to put up a fight!

"I know it's not a very GOOD idea yet, but you want to be the fairy or the beast? I don't care either way." Mercer was sweating ash into his eyes, leaving him blinking madly and running tear rivulets through his ash mask.
The thing was, did they even hand AN idea to roll with. Mercer sure seemed to think that they did and Atlas was sort of just find with improvising whatever. Atlas was much more the sort to have pages of outlines and and diagrams with the main idea mapped out and then branches off for other possibilities. So...sure, kid. This was fine.

"Uh..." he mumbled, buying himself just a couple of seconds more time while he glanced around at the various props and options. "...I'll be the beast...you can be the fairy..." Another pause while he considered options a bit and moved to grab some random items for Mercer to carry and drop or whatever it was the little Ravenclaw came up with. Or maybe they could just take turns playing out both situations or whatever.

"...you sure you don't want all that off your face?"

Luther gave a grateful look to Tasha. "Awesome. Carnivorous plants, you say? We could maybe put you in a room with an imaginary Venomous Tentacula and a key or something like that under the plant. And a riddle above the plant maybe? Something about the weakness of the plant. A riddle that you should be able to solve under an hour but not too easy." said Luther.

After thinking for a couple of minutes mumbling different lines, Luther said "How about this?"
Let the end of mischief help you
Use the start of your imagination
Look at the middle of an orb
And do not forget the beginning of an end
Now combine everything you know

After reciting the riddle Luther looked at Tasha and said "I don't know, 'fire' seemed like a good answer. We can scrap the riddle completely if you don't like it by the way."

How fun.
"Yeah.. That would be pretty awful," Karleigh said slowly, agreeing with a nod. She couldn't imagine what that would even be like to see any of her favorite people locked away in that state and knowing that their safety depended on her skill. Maybe Valerie Gray didn't need anything more than that to have the tournament leave a bad taste in her mouth. "Hopefully she wouldn't mind us talking to her," she added, already thinking of ways that she could run into her while working over the summer. Even if that was months away.

But right, yes, the task at hand now... best to not get too off course. "Compassion and creativity," she echoed Henry, agreeing with another nod. "Our task is going to be different and unique." And therefore superior, or at least pretty awesome! Because this Gryffindor was sure most people were going to focus on the danger aspect of the tournament, since it was so flashy. "Yes!" Karleigh squealed a bit when her cousin agreed to make the unicorn the star and was even more pleased with the all caps and star treatment. This was really going to be a cool task after all. How could they go wrong with a unicorn?? But she was so glad that Henry was on board with her ideas too.

She was also completely fine with Henry taking the notes for their mini group and she nodded enthusiastically as she listened to all his points. "Yes, I like having those clues too.. different animal footprints that they'd have to identify and find out which ones are the unicorn's.. and unicorn hair too." Could she think of anything else that would point towards unicorn or trick someone away? Hmm. "Mist is a great idea!" she added as her cousin explained his thinking there. "It seems dangerous, but it doesn't have to be. Maybe there are screams or scary sounds coming from it that aren't actually anything, but the contestants think it's something dangerous?" It was a suggestion. "Right! Because unicorns can be hesitant around people too, so they'd definitely have to show patience and understanding to approach.." She thought some more. "What if the contestants have the option of working together or alone... and what they don't know is that working together is part of the compassion test!" She wasn't sure exactly what that would look like, but she was pretty sure that would be tricky because most people would just want to WIN, which would leave the others behind.

Maybe that was all the thinking they could really do though because Professor Holden was calling for them to move on. Wait... they had to actually try this out? Karleigh glanced at Henry. She wasn't sure if they really finalized their task, plus... they didn't have a unicorn or mist, did they? Maybe they could just pretend. "Well, we're already in the maze.." she began to Henry. "I suppose we can do something of a run through.. and just pretend there is the other stuff. I can tell you when it's there, if you want to be the one to try out!" Or she could, if he'd rather. It didn't matter either way to her.

He couldn't help shaking his head about to laugh at that tease. Served him right with their back and forth. He couldn't use his wand since a Tentacula wasn't equipped with one. Though they bit and strangled, he obviously wasn't going to do that. Instead this would be a nice game of tag.

"Wasn't planning on it!" She may have a head start but Caes did have longer legs and they weren't climbing anywhere. "Better watch out," Likely circling around the class. He wondered what spell she was going to throw at him.

Aria already knew that Caes wasn’t going to go easy on her. He didn’t go overboard but he did make things challenging for her when needed. It’s why she could depend on him for honest opinions about her clothing designs, he made her challenge her creative skills. Still giggling, Aria turned to look for Caes in the sea of students. Was that his plan? To use them as his cover and then spring at her? Well, she would be Ready! That’s right! ‘Ready’ with a capital R!

But um…

Which spell to choose from? It wouldn’t be one that would harm, of course… Hmm… OOOH!!! She knew which! The Dancing Feet Spell! If she could just find him now...

Walking backwards, her eyes went this way and that in search.

How did these kids continue to get themselves into these messes?? Grabbing some generic antidote potions that would hopefully do the job, he'd grabbed his potions bag and followed Mr. Luck down to where Holden was holding his class.

"I hear we have some students who...oh for Merlin's sake," he grumbled as he laid eyes on the pair who were currently sprouting feathers all along their arms. Giving Holden an exasperated look of apology for crashing the lesson, he wandered over to them and plopped down next to them. He hated to interrupt their study time, but...they had feathers growing out of their arms. They kind of needed to tend to that.

"Tell me everything about what you've ingested recently before this started happening, and when it started. Now," he instructed as he started fiddling around in his bag for some things. Hopefully the antidotes he brought would do the trick but he had to know more about HOW they got to this point to know if it would work or not!

Arden found NOTHING wrong with not using magic. Magic wasn't everything right????

But she nodded as he whispered back, her eyes roaming around the room, too. "Yeah....why us? What did we do? Maybe someone doesn't hate us, but is going to target MORE people, and we're just their first target." Arden was under the impression no one in the whole world could dislike her. She was Arden Toros! She was nice and cool and KIND and could sing and loved hugs and reptiles and had a plushie in her backpack EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS 13 ok? SO like...if someone didn't like her, Arden wasn't sure she could cope with it!

Except Remy. Well actually....Arden WOULD be offended if Remy didn't like her, and she supposed that's why she got so upset whenever Remy had been rude to Hoops lately, and by extension, her. It was...it was...hard. "Maybe it wasn't house elves but.....I can't see anyone we know would ever do this to us. Maybe there's an EVIL VILLAIN out there targeting kids. That is the most logical." It wasn't, but to Arden it sure was!

And that was when the healer arrived, and Arden straightened up, her eyebrows furrowed >:0 in a perfect V formation as she did her best to not look embarrassed.

And he was being rude, too.

It made Arden put her hands on her hips. "We didn't do this ourselves....." she trailed off, unable to comprehend why this adult would take that tone with them. Her lower lip quibbled, something she ALSO wasn't used to in public, and she really just wanted this to be over. Could she sink into the ground now?

It didn't matter either way to her.
Hmmm. Henry wanted to be optimistic about that, about Miss Valerie Gray not minding them if they came asking questions about the competition, but it felt almost too unrealistic. Of course, she would mind. The Hufflepuff was ready to expect the worst, really. "Won't be until many months from now, but it's a summer plan," he shared. Here's to hoping they both don't forget the plan, even.

"Well, I couldn't agree more!" Henry grinned. It would be both unique and fun, without the threat of real danger. It's a good lesson for future tournament organisers too, that they didn't have to compromise safety to give the audience a great and eye-opening show. "Especially with our superstar unicorn, it'll be one worth remembering." You don't see unicorns all the time in this lifetime! Henry's never seen one himself either so he was going to live vicariously through this fake task.

Henry tried to think some more on how to tie the loose ends of their pretend task. An hour or so wasn't enough to finish this all up, Professor Holden! But alas, it's not like they were going to adopt these tasks anyway. "I'm thinking of riddles as well to add to the clues, but...do we have to write them now too? Or maybe just random obstacles, magical and non-magical, along the way," As much as Henry didn't mind so they add more flavour to their already flavourful task, writing riddles is a whole other branch of brainstorming that would need more time. It's not his strong suit either, so it would take even longer. "Creepy, scream-y mist. Got that! It adds to the spook factor, and the audience would eat that up," the Hufflepuff nodded with a smile and jotted that down on the page. "Oooh, all the contestants could have the same starting point. Or if not, just a lot of their paths converging with each other. I like to think that if they kept seeing each other throughout the task, they'd eventually take a hint that they have to work together." Something like that! Unless, well, teamwork just wasn't part of their vocabulary. That could happen, but it would score them a bit low in the compassion criterion.

....Time to start?? Henry looked at Professor Holden as he announced, then back to Karleigh. There were indeed some other stuff that could be finalised and refined, but time was running out. "We'll be fine! It's only a play test, though meeting a real unicorn would be nice," Henry commented with a cheeky smile. "Oh, I don't mind! Lead me, Miss Cousin Guide." This Hufflepuff was ready to, uh, act the part or whatever!

As for what they needed to get she wasn't sure yet.

"Let's make it so that the person being rescued doesn't have an 100% chance of touching the 'lava' so that it's a harder decision to make. maybe 70% or something. That way the competitor doesn't know that the person being rescued will 'die' without them. I can be the competitor, and I'll try to think about what most people would do without knowing what the challenge is." She struggled with recalling things from her memory all the time. Maybe that would be helpful? "Let's get started."

The creative discussions that Simon could hear from all corners of the maze was phenomenal! He was energized just listening to all of their plans whether it be from riddles to animal footprint clues to fairies. This was great but unfortunately the clock was ticking and they were almost done.

And unfortunately, that’s time folks! If you haven’t gotten to finish your testing, no worries, this will be part of your homework to do for next class. Thanks for joining for… I hope a relatively fun outdoors experience,” he said before offering a smile. He didn’t know if they had liked it but he had certainly enjoyed this lesson! It was a nice change of pace from 100% lecture and debates.

You can feel free to stay here to finish your “testing”. I’ll be around for another ten minutes and then will have to depart. Class dismissed!

He then waited for a few students to leave before turning to Javier and the chickens. “Miss Toros. Mr Ridley-Rush, if you have a moment. Please come see me.” And then to the rest of the class.

Hopefully it wasn’t too hard to get out of the maze, yes?
OOC: Thanks for an awesome lesson. I LOVED seeing what you guys came up with. If you want to finish up your testing here, please go ahead! I’ll leave this thread open a little longer (you’ve got an extra day) than planned because I’ve been traveling and my posts have been on really strange timezones! Thanks a million.

Keighley was quiet but only for a minute or so as she thought over what Ashley had just suggested to her. "We can do that. I think if we do it correctly it would work out very well," she agreed, nodding her head as she spoke. "Okay! I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to do?.. Do I just announce everything and then walk you through the course?" She wanted to make sure she did her best and not let Ashley down on their assignment and by doing so she needed to fully make sure she understood her part.

What?! How was the lesson nearly over already? The time had gone by so quickly, Keighley felt as if they hadn't gotten much completed. They still had a few minutes left though to really give it their best go?

"Yeah, I think so. We can skip the part where I dramatically walk around doing nothing and just skip to the relevant stuff since we're running out of time. And if we don't finish, we can do it as homework." She smiled, trying to look confident so Keighley would be confident too. "Go ahead, announcer Keighley."

Tasha let the riddle roll around in her mind for a few minutes, then nodded. "I like it. It sounds simple enough which is good for our time limit." She agreed, but now wondered how they would fake the plant. "I wonder if we could borrow a plant from the greenhouses? I don't know if anyone has ever done that or if it is even allowed." She mused. "If not, we could possibly do a rough sketch of one?" She suggested, feeling confident enough in her ability to sketch one well enough to tell what it was supposed to be.

Luther thought for a while, 'The drawing would be too simple but bringing a substitute plant from the Greenhouses would take too long.'. He then said "I think we don't have the time to bring a different plant and as you said it might not be allowed. Can you draw something that looks like a Venomous Tentacula because I am awful at drawing? Besides that, I think we can display our test if you are ready too." and he finished with an excited look on his face.
