Default HoM: Lesson 1 - Wizarding Tournaments

For a fun change to celebrate the commence of a new term, Professor Holden had been trying to change up each of his lesson’s locations while the weather was still pleasant. He thought it was important to take advantage of the good weather before the greyer, colder days rolled through.

It’s a crisp autumn morning and Holden has selected the Hogwarts Grounds for his lesson. Today, he is standing in front of the entrance to a magnificent emerald green hedge maze. To his left, there is an ornate marble goblet with sapphire flames dancing at its mouth. Further left of that goblet is a temporary table with scraps of parchment and quills. Take note of the sign, dear student.

“Feeling curious to try your hand? Write your name and give it to the goblet. Enter at your own risk. You MUST be of age to enter.”
OOC: AAAAND WELCOME TO THE FIRST HISTORY OF MAGIC CLASS OF THE TERM.
Simon and I are SO excited to have you here.

We'll leave the class open for arrivals for the next 24 hours before I officially kick off the lesson. I will note that my timezones may be funky with this lesson - I will be headed to Ireland tomorrow night but I will keep you all informed of lesson timing!

If you are not familiar with HoM Rules and Expectations, please familiarise yourself with them here!

P's you are also welcome to put a piece of parchment in the goblet if you have a charrie that is not of age. Just watch out for the goblet

Such facial structure! Aria was in awe of it. “Hi hi, professor! You’re looking great! And this setting is absolutely divine!” It reminded her of a certain aspect in history, mhmmm!

Reading the information provided, the Slytherin gave a little gasp of excitement. She had only just turned of age, the day they came back to Hogwarts! This meant that she could slip her name into the gorgeous goblet! Aria neatly printed her name on a piece of parchment then added it to the the object.

Wasn’t this EXCITING?!
If Simon knew the nickname that Aria had given him, he would have gotten a good chuckle. He didn’t consider himself “Eye Candy” or to have an impressive facial structure but he would have been grateful for the compliment. “Hi Miss McLeod. I…. Thanks. The setting does everything justice,” he commented with a firm nod as he clasped his hands behind his back. He watched her slip her name into the goblet. When she slipped her name into the goblet, the flames grew a little taller before settling. “Thanks for your submission.

Historically speaking, putting his name into that Goblet was a mistake.

But he was putting his new found trust in his favorite Professor, and stepped up to scrawl his name on a slip of paper before dropping it. "Hello, Professor Holden." He offered a greeting, before moving out of the way of the Goblet and over towards the rest of the class.
He couldn’t believe that it was Mr. Nam’s seventh year already. It felt like he had just met the boy last year when, in reality, it had been several. ”Mr. Nam. Good day so far?” he asked the now seventh year and watched the Ravenclaw put his name into the goblet as well. The fire danced as it consumed his piece of parchment.

Miss Fox was another student who he had seen such growth over the past few years. “Morning Miss Fox. Good summer, I hope?” he asked, offering her a smile. He was glad to see that she had entered Her name in as well. That meant that hopefully more students would do it too. He watched the piece of parchment that she placed in get devoured by the flames. Simon couldn’t help but chuckle at Ashley’s comment.

Reading the sign, he cursed inside 'Damn that sounds fun.' and he wondered if this maze and the goblet were parts of a game.

As he got closer to the students (Caes, Evan, Ash) he greeted them "Hello, I am Luther, Luther Starriver. How are you?"

Looking at the goblet and its fire, he remembered a story about a Goblet of Fire from the beginning of the last century, to Professor Holden he said "Good day Professor, I am Luther Starriver. How are you?" as an afterthought, he added "Is that the Goblet of Fire? Isn't that thing more than 200 years old?"
Simon offered Mr. Starriver a warm smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Simon Holden but please call me Professor Holden or Professor H as some of the other students see fit.” He paused, noting the boys robes. “I see that you are apart of the Gryffindor house. That is a good house.” All the houses were good houses. They all had their good qualities and their areas of improvement. His sister had been a Gryffindor. He had been a Slytherin himself. “I’m well thank you. How are you?” Simon followed Luther’s gaze towards the goblet. He chuckled. “Unfortunately it is not the real thing. I could not get my hands on the real deal but its a convincing replica of it.

It didn't take him long to discover the location because a big maze stood out even at Hogwarts. His dark brown eyes looked up at the Professor first, giving the man a quick "Hello, Professor Holden" before he turned to look at the marble goblet with sapphire flames flickering within. It reminded him of reading about one of the dangerous tasks that Harry Potter had to go through many years ago. Next, he read the message, and as his curiosity peaked, it instantly subsided when he noticed the words 'of age.'

"Well, that's rubbish" he muttered.

Despite his disapproval, he obeyed and didn't write his name. Instead, the Hufflepuff began to walk away to stand alone, watching the others and hoping that someone young would enter their name into the goblet so that he could observe if anything would happen to them.
Hello Mr. Yoon. How are you?” he inquired as he watched the fifth year look at the sign and then mutter something under his breath. Simon had hoped that he would have entered his name but Daniel surprised him. Interesting…

Still she plastered a smile on her face, one that didn't entirely reach her eyes, as she noticed people in the distance. Show time. See? She was so good at this.

A goblet. For putting names in. And Mercer wasn't allowed??!?

Milo walked silently past the pleading Mercer, and the squawking Arden, and Mr Holden, and approached the goblet. Ignoring the dire warnings stated by the sign, he took a piece of parchment and scribbled a name upon it.

Mercer Branxton

He took several steps away for safety reasons, and tossed the balled up parchment in to the goblet's flames.

Just to see.

She was, however, pulled back into the moment when her baby cousin made his way over with a request. Kins considered it for a moment before agreeing. "Okay, but only because I love you and I'm your favorite." Which seemed fair seeing as she was doing this favor for him now. And and and. Technically this wasn't cheating because Professor H just said you have to be of age to enter and she was of age and entering. So it wasn't really cheating, it was just a loophole. And if Professor H didn't want them to find loopholes, he should have been more clear. So really it was his fault.

Stepping up to the goblet, Kinsay unknowingly entered Mercer Branxton's name a second time.

Kinsay seemed a little distant from her peers. “Good Morning Miss James. How are you?” he asked, hoping that she was well. He did observe her not put her name into the goblet. Hmm.. He made a note to go follow up with her after the lesson to make sure everything was alright. Perhaps she was feeling a little unnerved about being in her seventh year already?

"Mr. Branxton." The younger, always energetic student got a smile.

Several minutes later, Simon’s eyes flicked back to Kinsay and Mercer. Then Mr. Evans approached. He received a nod. "Mr. Evans." Simon did notice Milo come by and slip a piece of parchment into the goblet. He smiled at the young boy, watching the goblet seem to gobble down the piece of parchment. Interesting… He chuckled softly when he saw Kinsay follow Mercer’s request. The flames seemed to take this piece of parchment. Would they be fooled?

Only time could tell.

The Triwizard Tournament, the Goblet of Fire… she sincerely doubted the marble goblet was the actual goblet from that time in history, but anything was really possible. After all, who would have expected there to have been an adolescent sphinx roaming the castle last term. It was Hogwarts after all.

“Good morning, Professor Holden”, she greeted the man, pulling her curly hair up into a ponytail before selecting a slip of paper to scribble her name on. Slipping it into the goblet, she went over to join Evan, Ash and Kinsay. Strength in numbers, maybe?
"Morning Miss Cooke. How are you? How as your summer?” he asked as he watched another seventh year fill out their name on the slip. The flames engulfed the piece of parchment.

"Hello, Professor." He managed. Nodding before seeing the sign. Aha.

Just as Caes wrote in his name, he was approached by a younger student. "Oh hello Luther, I'm Caes," So the others could introduce themselves too. As for the object. Caes eyed it, but didn't say to confirm since he wasn't absolutely positive, since his last school didn't touch on it. Maybe his sis or someone else who was more sure could answer. So instead Caes gave a small smile, to acknowledge that he heard and wasn't ignoring him.

Dropping his name into the cup after Aria, he waited to see what was going to come about this.
Simon arched his right eyebrow a little higher at Mr. Hawkin’s small smile. He could have sworn he saw the edges curl up as if he were about to chuckle. “Hello Mr. Hawkins. Is it a good day?

Raj was happy at least it was outside so they could enjoy the nice weather rather than being up in the castle when they didn’t have to. “Good morning Professor,” he greeted the man standing before a maze.

That caught his curiosity for sure. As did the bluish flamed goblet beside him. The Goblet of Fire as some firstie mentioned which he definitely remembered reading something about. Speaking of reading, his eyes caught sight of the notice on the table. Nope…at 16 he was not OF AGE and thus not presented with the trouble deciding what to choose. Instead the sixth year moved off to one side to settle in for the start of the lesson.
Simon nodded in greeting to the next student who came along. It seemed as if the replica of the Goblet of Fire had piqued his interest. "Morning Mr. Atreyu-Rehman," he said with a nod before watching the sixth year go stand to the side.

NO.

She was some sort of...HYBRID CHICKEN. LITERALLY. THERE WERE FEATHERS SPROUTING OUT OF RANDOM SPOTS ALL OVER HER BODY. She was lucky she didn't have a BEAK! The random squawks she was releasing were enough to embarrass her into the next decade.

Was it stupid to hope no one would notice? Yes. SHE. HAD. FEATHERS.

COMING OUT HER HEAD. HER FACE. HER BLOODY EAR.

And Arden was convinced she had been poisoned. And AND AND should she have gone to the hospital wing? She wasn't sick? Nothing hurt? She was just a very mismatched looking CHICKEN PERSON.

"G'day -"

*SQUAAAAWWWWWK*

Ugh.

Arden covered her mouth IMMEDIATELY. And unfortunately for Mercer, she had elbowed him during the squawk....you know, chicken-like and all.
Simon turned his attention from the last student to Miss Toros and his concern exponentially increased. He called her over to the side. "Miss Toros, can you see me over here please?" He waited until she joined him before asking. "... uh... Are you quite alright? Perhaps you might want to visit the School Nurse?" he offered after he heard that squawk. Hopefully it wasn't Peeves again... "Did someone do this to you?" Pranks would not be tolerated especially given the distressed chicken hybrid state she was in.

It could just be bluebell flames, he supposed.

When he read the sign, he stuck his hands in his pockets. Being only fourteen, he didn't bother filling out any parchment with his name. He'd leave that for the older kids.

As for his squawking, feathering housemate who'd arrived just before him...Finn edged his way to stand as far away from the girl as possible. Just in case the feathers were contagious

The whole ignorance was bliss argument fell on deaf ears with the man, naturally, thus the Gryffindor counting down the days until he was of-age and argue that as a certified adult wizard...he was entitled to make his own choices.

All that being said...today Atlas was uncharacteristically very VERY very much looking forward to this morning's lesson - though it had nothing to do with the subject itself and even less to do with the professor. It did, however, have everything to do with the loud SQUAKING he heard as he approached the gathered group. He didn't even have time to recognized his petty disappointment in (apparently) this lesson being exclusive in some sort of activity with there being an age line and a (the?) Goblet of Fire right in front. Nor did he really spend much time dwelling on the correlation with their young sphinx friend and the maze before them. No, Atlas was instead casting a casual gaze over towards one of two third years he was on the look out for. His eyes drifted in search of Remy, who he had seen leaving the common room before him, and tried to relay a message with his subtle wiggle of the brow that, yes, he had taken care of things.

For one reason or another, he did not go to stand beside her and instead came to a stop beside Finn and rocked forwards on to his toes and then back on to his heels while his hands were shoved into his pockets and fidgeted with his sets of metallic matchsticks.

"So...today's lesson is only for of age students who volunteer to put their name in the Goblet and are selected by it?" he asked of Professor Holden somewhat rhetorically. Apparently not going to just let the salty disappointment slide. "The rest of us...just watch hedges the whole time?" Something he often thought about Triwizard Tournament tasks in general. Watch the surface of the lake...watch hedges...watch the mouth of a cave... real riveting stuff right there.
Ah Mr. Flamsteed. Simon found this particular Gryffindor both similar and different to his father. He listened to Atlas' question and shook his head. "Not quite... Everyone will be participating, Mr Flamsteed. The "of age" guideline was just to add some authenticity. Don't worry. No one who is underage will turn into some elderly wizards because they put their names in the goblet." Simply a study to see who would bend the rules.

And there was a goblet... The seventh year read the sign, almost immediately clicking in her head that this was like the Triwizard tournaments she had read about in her history books. But before she could make a decision, a loud SQUAWK drew her attention. Uh..? Karleigh looked at the third year carefully. Were the feathers a fashion choice? Interesting. But the seventh year wasn't sure she got it.

And then she heard Atlas mention the goblet and her attention was refocused. Heck yeah she was going to put her name in! "Are we going to have our own Triwizard Tournament, Professor?" she asked as she quickly scribbled her name on a piece of parchment and tossed it into the goblet. Or at least as an activity during class... maybe not the huge ordeal that spans the school term... though that might be cool too. Surely, this would not be quite as dangerous for class purposes? Well. Seventh year was all about taking risks, right? ....maybe she should have gotten more information before being so impulsive.
[COLOR="Navy"]He tried his best not to give too much away to Mr. Flamsteed in his response. So when Miss Creed asked him directly, he had to, once again, cryptically answer. "Perhaps some sort of event..." he said with a wry smile as he watched her fill out her form and toss it into the fire.

And despite his lack of knowledge in the History of Magic. He's heard about this tournament enough now to know what was going on, and what this class would likely be about.

Then walked toward the back of the group of Students.

If Moose was a betting man, there is no way the Goblet would choose him.
And here came another seventh year. One who was a former troublemaker in Simon's eyes. One who had a good heart too. And a seventh year who was shockingly speaking to him again. "Morning Mr. Stover," he greeted. Now was Miss Rivers following shortly behind him? Those two always seemed inseparable.

He even saw people moving close to it, one of them being his own cousin Karleigh and fellow classmate Moose. More curious than ever, Henry picked up his pace and realised that is A WHOLE GOBLET OF FIRE-ish in class. "Hey, professor!" Henry greeted his head of house. He also then realised what the Goblet of Fire was for after reading the note by the table with the parchments and quills.

....Well, it was his last year. Henry hastily scribbled on the parchment, with 'HenHem' and a smaller 'Henry Hembree' at the bottom. The note did say to enter at your own risk, but it's not like Professor Holden was going to put them in so much danger or something. Maybe that was putting too much faith in the Hogwarts staff? Eh. Whatever!

After tossing his name into the goblet, Henry went to join Karleigh. "Hi!" The Hufflepuff grinned at his cousin before whispering. "Saw you dropped your name and I did the same. Wonder what's out there?" Wherever the (familiar) crowd went, Henry followed. And that's what's exactly happening here today.
Mr. Hembree had joined them. "Good Morning, Mr. Hembree." Another seventh year to cast their name into the goblet. Interesting... Interesting.

Lessons outside were always a major plus in her blue eyes. So as it was when Keighley reached where the lesson was being held, there was a bright smile on her face. "Good morning, Professor Holden!" What was up with the ma-

Oooooohhhhhh!!!

Was that the goblet of fire! It was stunning! The flames were absolutely mesmerizing and she almost had trouble pulling her gaze away from it long enough to read the sign near the table. SIGH! Well... that didn't have anything to do with her. She still had a few more years until she was Of Age.
"Hello Miss Anders! Good Morning to you too!" he greeted, returning her enthusiastic reply with one equally of his own.

With the group assembled and greetings out of the way, it was time to get the lesson started. “Welcome one and all! I was going to get started by asking you what you thought today's lesson was about but a few of you have ventured a guess so we'll get started with the proposed ideas..” he paused to turn to the goblet beside him and gave it three gentle pats. Blue eyes flicked across the students to see who was paying attention. “I've heard Triwizard Tournament... Goblet of Fire...” He paused because the goblet began to act up. It began to shake and the flames grew larger and then almost seemed to die down completely before it began spitting names back to the students who had entered them. To the ones that were of age, the names came back directly to the student and turned into confetti. To the pieces of parchment that had students who were not of age returned to the student (whose name was on the paper) and turned into ash.

"Writing your name and entering it into the goblet was a simple study to not only simulate how the students at the time felt about entering such a risky competition but also a study to see who would bend the rules." Gave him some more insight into his students if they were presented with the choice. Would they follow the rules because he was the Professor or would they question it and carve their own path? There was no right or wrong answer. Just a curiosity. "I did notice that several students decided it against it because of the rule whilst others entered some other people's names..." he commented, pointedly looking at a few of the students. "However this activity is for everyone so I am glad to inform you that everyone will be participating in this fun event."

As Mr Flamsteed and Miss Creed previously mentioned, we will be discussing Wizarding Tournaments. In fact, today we are focusing on two tournaments throughout history. The Triwizard Tournament of 1994-1995 and the International Magical Pupil Standoff or, more simply referred to as, the IMPS Tournament of 2092-2093." He paused to see if they were all following. "Now before we get into the fun fact sharing portion, I want to get us moving. We're on the grounds and its a beautiful day so let's try our hand at navigating the maze. Follow me," he called out as he began to walk into the maze. He paused, turning around to address the students. "Oh and do mind your step. There are a few pesky branches here and there. We’ll want to get to the centre of the maze before formally starting our activity today.” He began walking ahead, waiting for the students to follow before stopping once more to check for anyone lagging behind. “I’d recommend to keep up and avoid dawdling or heading off the path that I take. The maze has a mind of its own, y’know.

Now as they were walking through the maze, Simon turned around and asked the group, “Generally speaking... What do you think the purpose of a triwizard tournament or IMPS tournament is? Also for these two specific tournaments in mind, what was happening in history at these times? Do you think there is a correlation between the historical events and the tournament?"

Lot's of good questions to start off their discussion today. Hopefully the walk was a good way to not only stay warm but also to get those minds turning!
OOC: Hey folks! Thanks for coming. Once again, delighted to have you here!

Slight change up to the lesson. We're going to dive right into this question. Our students and Professors are going to walk and talk as they navigate the maze.

Right now all students are just with Simon walking to the centre of the maze. He's going to ask them a few questions as they head to their destination.

The Tournaments that we'll be focusing on today are the 1994-1995 TriWizard Tournament (HP Canon) and the 2092-2093 IMPS Tournament (SS Canon).

You'll have 48 hours to answer this question before I move us on! If you have questions, please reach out. FYI I will be headed to the airport around 5 pm EST and boarding a flight. I should be back online tomorrow at 9 am GMT +1 (4 AM EST) so I'll try my best to respond to questions.

Luther looked around and thought 'I wonder what would happen if I entered my name myself and also with the help of someone else.' Maybe he would ask the professor at the end of the lesson.

While Luther thought exploring the maze would be fun, he didn't want to spend a day in a maze with no reward, therefore he started to follow Professor not too close but from a distance that he could hear him talking. Maybe he could inspect the walls while the rest of the students followed Professor. Then he heard Professor's speech and questions. Raising his hand he waited to be called on and answered, "I think authorities of the attending countries wanted to promote some kind of international camaraderie between people of those countries through their children, Professor." stumbling a bit on the word "camaraderie" and added, "but that doesn't seem like the only reason behind IMPS, I guess. In IMPS' case, since there were only two schools competing maybe they wanted to measure how talented the next generation is. Therefore, considering what I have read about the times of these events, I think events threatening the welfare of the people pushed authorities to assess their national resources and international relationships." As he finished his answer, he looked directly at the Professor to gauge his reaction.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

WHY did Caes sound like THAT?

Aria shot her brother a reproachful look and immediately understood that he was trying not to laugh. At HER. She elbowed him pointedly. Like… HELLO! She didn’t share certain secrets just for you to want to make things obvious, Caes! Having dropped her name in the Goblet already and said a self conscious but polite ‘you’re welcome’ to Holden, Aria was now watching the older Slytherin write his name when an ickle joined them. “Hi, Luther! Aria here.” There was no chance that Luther could put his name in the Goblet so she watched Caes do his thing. "You're right," she continued to address the Gryffindor. "It may not be the exact Goblet but the original one has to be ancient, it's been around so long." Casually linking her arm through Caes', Aria decided not to go into details about the history of things. Why spoil the lesson for either Caes or Luther? And for Bella who had just joined them. “Hi, Bella!” Also… squawking, underage students attempting to get their names into the Goblet… OH MY!

With the lesson beginning, Aria’s gaze shifted to the Goblet and its flame. To her, the flame was mesmerising. OOH! Just look at it acting… all weird! This was interesting! The sixth year’s eyes widened as a slip of parchment shot at her before bursting into confetti. Pretty! But she had sort of expect that everyone would participate in whatever fun Holden had in store because which Professor was going to leave any student out, hmm?

Giving Caes’ arm a tug, she began leading them after Eye Candy. Oh??? The maze was ‘alive’? What fun! Aria stared around at it as they walked as though expecting to see it breathe or something. From time to time, she would nimbly step over a branch. She was NOT looking to sprain an ankle, thank you very much! Now to get to those questions!

Since Luther had tackled the Triwizard Tourney aspect, Aria raised a hand of wiggling fingers, intending to provide her thoughts on the IMPS Tourney. “The IMPS Tournament held the task of strengthening the relationship between Hogwarts and Ilvermorny. I believe it was also used to test the skills of those students competing, a friendly rivalry of sorts - much like the Triwizard Tournament.” As for what was going on in history at the time, the girl couldn’t exactly remember in terms of the period which the IMPS tourney was held but she did know that around the time of the Triwizard Tourney, things had been in motion which lead up to the second Wizarding War.

SPOILER!!: started this before we moved on so arrival is under here ^_^
Desiree was a bit… hmm about outside classes. She liked the fresh air and sunshine, but in her experience, outside lessons were the ones where she was most likely to get dirty. But this was History of Magic, one of her favorite classes and usually a pretty lowkey one, so maybe it would be okay. She skipped down the path, gradually slowing as she spotted Professor Holden. “Hi, Professor!” she greeted her Head of House with a cheery smile and an extra princessy wave.

Noticing the maze behind him, she tilted her head to get a better look, unsure whether to be intrigued or worried.. Ooh, what was in there? Nothing too scary or messy, she hoped! Soon her attention was distracted by the goblet and its blue flames. So pretty! Was that what she thought it was? She took a cautious step closer, and one look at the sign confirmed her suspicions. Yeah, no… no way was she putting her name in there! She knew what happened to the Weasley twins when they tried to put their names in, and she DID NOT want a beard, thanks!

Moving aside, she went to stand with her classmates. As her bright blue eyes scanned the area, she spotted Arden’s feathers. Yikes! Was that what happened to the underage students who tried to put their names in? Merlin, she was glad she didn’t try it!

Desiree’s eyes widened as the goblet’s flames grew and then died, and the slips of parchment returned to their owners. She noticed that some of them turned into confetti, while others (which she assumed belonged to the underage students) turned into ash. Wait, was that all that was going to happen to the rule breakers? Then how did Arden wind up with feathers? Never mind…

Blinking confusedly. She tried to focus her attention on Holden. She wasn’t at all surprised to hear that they would be discussing the Triwizard Tournament of 1994-95, but she was surprised to hear they were also discussing the IMPS Tournament. Ooh, that was when her mum and dad were professors here! She’d heard stories about it in passing, but it would be fascinating to learn about it from a more academic standpoint!

As Desiree followed the group, she wondered how the maze was going to fit into the lesson. She knew there was a hedge maze in the Triwizard Tournament. Was there one in the IMPS Tournament too? She remembered stories about a challenge in a forest, but she wasn’t sure if it was a maze. Was this maze full of scary creatures and obstacles like the competitors in both tournaments faced? She stuck closer to Professor Holden as the thought occurred to her. No need to remind her not to wander off or dawdle!

She considered the questions carefully, for now focusing on the second one since other people had already answered the first. After taking a moment to choose her words, she raised her hand and said, “Both tournaments are tied to significant historical events. Voldemort’s return and the start of the Second Wizarding War happened during the Triwizard Tournament.” But everybody knew that, so she didn’t elaborate on it. “In the IMPS Tournament, two of the Ilvermorny professors were part of a pro-muggleborn cult, and they tricked a Hogwarts professor into helping them. I don’t know all of what happened, but I know that they targeted pureblood Hogwarts students and staff for a couple of terms afterward. I think their symbol was a hawk…”

Was she talking too much? It felt like she was, so she allowed her voice to trail off, blushing bright pink in the process. She’d let somebody else fill in the information she was missing!

A Poop * k8 *

The squawking was uncomfortable, and the feather growing out of her ear was ALSO pretty uncomfortable, but what was the MOST uncomfortable was the professor pulling her aside to talk. As if she needed MORE attention on herself. Arden wasn't usually this embarrassed - in fact, she hardly ever even felt embarrassment, something her mother disliked about her - but right now? She could feel her cheeks growing rosy and hot. Ugh. All else was blocked out: anyone putting their names, any chatter about her condition, it was all OUT.

Ugh.

"Um. I don't know if the nurse would help...I'm not HURT. I..I don't want to miss class," and she gave him the ;______; face for extra emphasis. "It's just some feathers and - " There was a pause before the giant *SQUAAAAWWWWK* and she covered her mouth like she would if she had burped or hiccupped. Her cheeks reddened further. "I think I've been POISONED. BY THE HOUSE ELVES!!" Because Milo had said that at dinner the night of the feast! "Or someone told the house elves - "

But she was fine, and Professor Holden clearly thought she was fine, for he was starting class, so THERE.

And Arden was following, but she was distracted. Maybe it was the feathers, maybe it was her usual brain shenanigans, but she was...not in this at all. She may even....begin to wander of...NOPE. nope. She stayed with the group.

So it was a ploy. Psychological experimentation, likely not approved by an ethics committee. Milo expected little more from the main conspirator (read: head of that most dastardly house (read: Hufflepuff)). Ultimately no damage was done - Milo's propensity to bend, break, borrow, steal, or outright ignore the rules was no real mystery, and the most that could be gleaned was that he had not thrown his own name into the cup, while two people had contributed Mercer's name.

The real revelation was that Mr Holden could not be trusted - not that he, nor the other professors, nor the students, nor the house elves had been deemed trustworthy to begin with. What else did he have planned, now that he had been handed his new shield, enamelled in yellow and black? How long would that network of false integrity be permitted to run rampant? How long before they all stopped...

Milo blinked and twitched, now aware that Mr Holden was trying to lead them all (sans co-conspirators) into a trap; the choice of topic suddenly made sense. That was the answer to his question, about the purposes of these tournaments. Traps and tricks and subterfuge.

But he could not provide his answer, because Arden Toros had driven it (almost) clear out of his mind in confirming one more suspicion. Milo dropped back even further, and had to pause for a moment, suddenly unsettled and ashen and several degrees off kilter.

Amazing how a simple smile could say so many words. Caes shrugged not so innocently, "It is a great day, sir." He replied. After all, here he was outside of the school halls. They were going for a walk. Fun time with his sis and friends. A great day... also did the chicken girl drink a bad polyjuice potion? Nah, it needs hair and not feathers to work.

Having been over 17 for near 2 years now his name came back followed by confetti. Wiping it off his robes he felt his arm connect with Aria. Welp, they were walking now. Arm in toe with Aria. Listening to the question, Caes took in the other's responses, in between the half-chicken girl squawking, before adding as well, "I imagine with the tournaments taking place in a foreign country, the visitors gained a new outlook on and exposure to how the other side lives." Making friends, sure, that was plausible. "Kind of like trading secrets, they can see how one school outperformed the other and know what to improve on in the future." He probably should've read more on the situation, but at least the concept was possible for him to make some deduction.

Default Oh, don't mind me. Hooper is just arriving late as a chicken. Sorry!

HOOPER HAD ARRIVED! Late. But he had arrived!

Flying Running towards where he knew the lesson to be, his robes billowing in the wind behind him, Hooper Ridley-Rush was trying his best not to trip, fall over and eat the fine Hogwarts dirt that was crunching under his feet.

Over his first two years at this fine magical institute, the third year Gryffindor had been late several times but never like this. The again, he’d never been half a chicken before so there was that too.

As he arrived at the maze entrance, the other students were just heading into maze, Hooper burst into the middle of them, his breathing uneven and heavy due to the relentless flight sprint down from the Gryffindor common room.

“S- Sorry Profes- *SQUAaaaaaaaaaaaAWK* Professor,” he breathed as he followed them into the maze itself, a little unsure exactly why they were there.

Shuffling along with the rest of them, his face covered in feathers, a small beak sticking out of where his mouth was, walked Hooper the half boy, half chicken. “I have NO idea how this happened Professor. I just woke up like this!” A normal child may have been embarrassed to the point where they’d not turn up to the lesson or maybe try and hide the feathers but as he stood there, feathers covering his skin like a patchwork quilt, he couldn’t help but grin.

“SQUAaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK!!! ”

With a little cough and splutter, Hooper eventually took a second to look around, his eyes eventually finding Arden lurking amongst the rest of the students. Not checking to see how she was reacting to the feather that were over her, Hooper quickly headed straight over to where she was. “ARDEN! You’re a chicken too!!! How awesome is this!” he exclaimed as he flashed his own fluffy white feathers. “Do you think this is lasting? Because I kind of want to dye mine red.”

Part of the third year, a very small part, had wondered why they were walking in the old maze but that was quicky overruled by the other part of him that had been covered by fluffy white feathers. Oops. Sorry Professor.

AH! So that meant nothing then? Henry tossed his name into the GOBLET OF FIRE-ish for nothing? The Hufflepuff was relieved as much as he was a little disappointed. He had thought there would be some kind of thrill, but alas it was true that Professor Holden wouldn't put them in trouble. Oh well! And of course, the topic for today's lesson was already quite obvious from the get-go.

Henry followed the Professor into the maze like the rest of the class. He was feeling rather adventurous, sure, but he'd rather not lunge himself straight into danger. Apparently the maze had a mind of its own, which seemed LEGIT, but if the GOBLET OF FIRE-ish was fake, then what if Professor Holden was joking with them now too??

Right, the first question was thrown into the mix now too. The generic answer was already shared too, it seems. Henry figured he'd just offer up something different. Whatever! "A wicked means of financial support, maybe, Professor? There was prize money involved in the Triwizard Tournament, and a full-ride scholarship to university in the IMPS, if they won. Can't imagine turning such an opportunity down if you needed it." Henry would've done the same, by the way, so he kind of felt for the ones who decided to join in spite of the danger.

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Summer was looking forwards to another class, she had been sitting quietly, just watching everyone and listening to their answers, she had no idea what she was going to say so in the end she just raised her hand and hoped for the best.

"Maybe it is to help us understand the pride of being in the same school, you know like in football a club has players who would do anything to help their team win the league." Yeah she probably could have used quidditch as an example but she thought football was just as good.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"Yeah. Good summer," Ash lied to the professor.

She thought it would have been nicer if her name turned into ash, but confetti was okay too. She put some of it into her hair. "I guess the purpose would be to compare the skillsets of different schools, and show off. Prove that your school was the best, supposedly in a friendly way." She avoided staring at the chicken kids, although she was very curious as to what happened to them. Hooper seemed happy about it, the other kid not so much. "Don't these tournaments have a tendency to go wrong? Or are those just the ones we learn about? They're supposed to be dangerous and challenging, but not in the way Desiree mentioned." Ash thought she could deal with dangerous magical obstacles. Cults, not so much.

As the listen started, Keighley was listening. Honest. All of her attention was on Professor Holden and what the lesson was going to be about. The TriWizard Tournament and the IMPS Tournament. Her gaze did not shift at all onto those beautiful flames that goblet kept spitting out. It was like it was purposely trying to draw her attention to it. Thankfully they were moving along through the maze so she could focus.

Yesssss, focus...

About that...

How was anyone answering the question when two of their peers where.. CHICKENS?! Sure stranger things have happened but Keigh couldn't help but pause for a second and look at Arden and Hooper. What had happened?!

She may have heard everything that was said by Professor Holden and everyone around her but she currently had nothing at all to add.

History of magic was unjust today, Apollo decided from the moment he saw the notice about only of age wizards getting to submit their names. Wait.... Aria was seventeen already??? It occurred to him now that he knew very few of his peers birthdays, so while it was entirely possible ... he assumed her to be almost of age and thereby breaking the rules. Which also gave the sixth year gryffindor reason to add his own name to the mix. Even though he was only sixteen ... he'd be of age before the end of the year, so that had to count for something, right??

As he had dropped his name in, he couldn't help but be distracted by two of his younger housemates as chickens?? UM. What?? What a terrible prank if this was one? He looked between the two young gryffindors and the professor... "Should i.... can i go maybe get Healer Mancini?"

As far as the question about the purpose of a triwizard or IMPS tournament.... his classmates basically nailed it with the mention of camaraderie. What was happening in history at these times? He didn't really know cause the IMPS tournament was the year he was born. Had his parents said anything about that time? Not really. But then again, he hadn't asked. About ten years later the world erupted into a war though, but ten years was a big time period. Wasn't it?

"Does the class of 2110 being born in the year of the IMPS tournament count as history?" Because it should. It really should.

Tahani raised her hand. 'I think competitions have a way of bringing people together whilst also promoting a sense of group membership and social identity amongst different groups. Tri wizard tournament for example increased camaraderie between various groups and also increased the school spirit within these groups,' she answered.

'Tri Wizard Tournament was associated with the return of Voldemort. I think this was convenient. In multiple ways. With the school's attention on the tournament, he could lie low and plot his way back and he did just that. Also, generally, people are distracted by sports events. They're happy, unperturbed and overall caught in the moment, making sporting events easy targets. This happens a lot in Muggle World as well. '
she answered.

The arrival of his peers, and the slight greetings offered by his fellow seventh years and a rather outgoing first year, all received returned smiles from Evan - despite no verbal response being given as well. Holden's own question to him was not further elaborated on, as Evan knew the lesson was about to be underway and he didn't want to take any time from the activities planned on simple pleasantries - even if with one of his favorite Professor's.

Once they moved on, Evan chuckled a bit at the show from the Goblet of Fire - which really had been nothing but there for the ~ experience ~. That, and a brilliant ploy from the Professor to determine which it was of his students that needed the most surveillance throughout the term. Honestly, ingenious, and should Evan actually pursue the Professor route he would undoubtedly be harboring this tactic in his pocket for future use. Wiping some confetti off from his shoulder, he began to move his feet forward to follow the rest of the class into the hedge maze.

Ev listened thoughtfully at the answers being offered, agreeing with each in regards to the tournaments being used specifically to foster the relationships between different parts of the magical worlds. IMPS was not something he'd ever studied much on, but the TriWizard Tournament was a fascinating piece of history that he'd researched prior so his brain kept moving back to that. Collecting his thoughts, Evan raised his hand. "I agree the primary reasons for competitions such as the ones we're talking about today was for magical cooperation. But I think they also can be distraction. Historically speaking, I'm not sure who exactly was the parties in charge of implementing the TriWizard tournmanet the year it was, as you could probably try to draw corruption conspiracies based on the fact the tournament itself was used as a primary tool in bringing Voldemort back to power." But... he was not actually trying to be a conspiracy theorist. "But what I like to think was one of the reasons it happened when it did, was there was still so much fear and unrest from the Quidditch World Cup that summer and the attacks that happened there, that the tournament was used to soothe and distract all members of the Wizarding World and try to give some semblance of normalcy again." After all, hadn't each of the regions of the Cup had members there at the time of the Death Eater attacks?

Remy had noticed Atlas and she gave him a small smile in return. Who’d have thought that he would be such a gentleman to give her needed space, yet still have her back 100%? She knew better than to think of it as romantic. Speaking of the problem that was being sorted out, Remy had to bite her lip and cover her mouth when Arden arrived as a CHICKEN. She couldn’t help but look back at Atlas to get the confirmation look that this was his doing.

Although she was distracted from the lesson, Remy, much like everyone else, was disappointed that there would be no ACTUAL Triwizard Tournament, despite her being too young to participate anyway. She wasn’t too sure if she ever would put herself forward, if ever given the chance in the future. She had never pictured herself vanquishing dragons, etc, before but it was one hell of an exciting daydream.

And there was Chicken!Hooper and Remy was almost CACKLING this time around. He was the one who really deserved it.

Taking a step forwards as movement went towards the maze, Remy made a beeline for Professor Holden, still making sure her voice was heard in front of the class. “Professor, the chickens are disrupting the class, I think they need to be eggs-corted off the grounds.” She turned to smirk at them both.

As for the question, Remy really didn’t have anything intelligent to add.

Don't worry, professor, he wasn't worried nor even concerning himself with anyone who put their name in despite the guidelines. He understood the want to touch the big red button that ought not to be touched, but would never do so in such a public setting where other people could see the backlash to his defiance. The end result of ash from what turned out to be just some bells and whistles for ambiance was disappointing anyway - quite the opposite of the immense satisfaction he took from seeing the half chickens in class. Just one for now though which...hmm...where was the other one?

Atlas briefly wondered if there was something to be inferred from the fact that they were discussing two tournaments a century apart but the thoughts did not linger there for too long. He knew that Hogwarts had hosted another Triwizard Tournament more recently as well since he had seen the plaque or whatever in the Trophy Room during the times he utilized it for his tinkering and the victor had worked with dad at the Ministry for a time. Whatever thoughts may have been forming there were lost when, finally, the second half chicken arrived and in very VERY loud fashion. Under any other circumstances he probably would have been incredibly irritated by all the noise but not today. It was kind of a win-win, really, but he did not allow his gaze to linger on the duo too long (nor on Remy) as he instead worked on paying attention to where exactly he was walking.

He remembered stories from dad of some other tournament hosted at Hogwarts...something that had some ridiculously long name...and it was more academic based rather than adventure and glory...or something like that. He couldn't remember enough about it to add it to the discussion already going on anyway. Plus....there was a really sickly looking third year here in the back of the pack that had caught Atlas' attention (and made him miss that pun of Remy's too)

"...oi...kid," he whispered while giving the little Ravenclaw a soft jab to the arm with his elbow. "...you okay?"

Bella smiled back at Professor Holden "I shall keep an eye out for the relics then sir, when we enter the maze." Before she could think of something else to say she was distracted by the squawking students that had now doubled. It wasn't just Arden of the lions that looked like half a chicken anymore, but also Hooper of the eagles. They had either been pranked, cursed or something else. She shook her head as it seemed that Professor Holden had taken notice of the student chickens and she could focus on answering the question that just had been asked.

Raising her hand thoughtfully Bella responded as they began walking into the maze, in a line behind Professor Holden's back. "I know that the Triwizard tournaments of history's purpose or at least one of the purposes has been to kindle relationships over country barriers. To let students see and learn of another contries culture, language, magical school, way of living, and also of another race if you think of the veelas that came from Beauxbatons." She was not going to venture off the path and risk getting herself into trouble unless it'd be worth it. Seeing a portrait of someone famous would be worth it.

LOLOLOL corny joke there, Professor Holden. Honestly not enough people used wordplay with Adam's last name. Hehe. He had just laughed in response before joining the class, listening to Holden explain what the topic of the lesson was. Which was REALLY hard to do considering a handful of students were apparently turning into poultry. Eyes wide, Adam just watched in silent horror as some of the younger kids started squawking and sprouting literal FEATHERS. Uh. He was pretty sure that NONE of this had anything to do with the Triwizard Tournament...

He didn't even hear Holden's question but could surmise what it was from everyone else's answers, so he tried in vain to focus back on the lesson and raised his hand. "Well I think the main point is to try and foster relationships between students of different backgrounds."

He paused and looked over at the chicken...student...people again before turning back to Holden. "Should I like...go get help?" he asked him. The Headmaster maybe?

Tasha kept her eye out for low lying branches that might trip her as she walked with her fellow classmates. While she didn't know too much about the tournaments, she tried to think of something she could say. Participation was important, right? "I think on the surface, it's supposed to be a friendly competition to bring the schools closer together....but it does seem like they usually end up being a distraction from darker things." She tossed out no one in particular, just adding her thoughts to those of her classmates.

It took Hooper a moment to realise that there were several people looking at him and Arden as he stood there although he wasn’t exactly surprised. He looked awesome so they were bound to talk about him! Although, for some reason, they seemed to think that he needed help? Did they not realise that he was, all things considered, pretty content. Although, he wasn’t exactly sure how it happened so maybe a little help was needed. He had someone to thank.

“I’m not really sure I need help people. I feel pretty good. Look, I have feathers?!” Holding up his arm, he pulled his sleeve back to show everyone the few feathers that were on his arm. His expression did sour a little however when the boyfriendless fifth year chirped up (Remy). Turning to her, he simply flashed a wide smile to match hers and muttered “Don’t you have somewhere to run off to and cry about your boyf-Oh…never mind. Sorry. I forgot.” Turning away from here, because she clearly wasn’t worth the time or effort, he turned towards Arden again to make sure that she was okay. It had occurred to him that she may not have had the same reaction as he had so she may not feel well.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

Moose had a bit of a slouch in his shoulders and stuffed his hands into his pants pockets as he stood toward the back of the class. Only to stand into a attention a bit more when the Goblet in front of them all started to act up and the blue flames grew larger. The Slytherin took a step back when the papers they wrote started to spew back toward them, he took one more step back when one came toward him and burst into confetti slightly wincing at the surprise. How stupid.

Moose kept quiet during first question as he followed the crowd into the Maze picking up the rear and just listening to the answers given to Holden's questions. Occasionally taking a look behind him to make sure nothing from the maze was going to snatch him up as the Professor had warned it might if they didn't keep up. Though his attention was pulled forward fully at the mention of a Pro-Muggleborn Cult. This was something he wanted to hear more about for sure. Where were these guys during the war to combat the Neo-Alliance?

As for the Squawking Squawkers, Moose tossed some nasty glares at them. There noises were starting to get on his nerves.

Before they had begun walking, he spoke with Arden at the side. He could tell the girl was dedicated to her studies having explained that she didn’t wish to miss her lesson. It didn’t seem as if what she had was infectious so Simon let it go. However, he did correct her wild conspiracy theory about the house elves. He did narrow his icy blue eyes slightly. “Why would the house elves do this to you? They would never poison a student. That’s a very serious accusation, Miss Toros… Did you say something to someone or do something? Maybe a bad joke?” he asked with a furrowed brow. He let out a sigh of relief before focusing his attention on the rest of the class. In the meantime, he’d keep an eye for any peculiar student interactions.
> > >

The class made a lot of good points. Simon was impressed. “Strengthening international relations in a younger generation is important. We see that similarity through in Muggle history too,” he agreed with Luther. Then Aria added more on to Luther’s train of thought but more focused on the IMPS. “Nothing wrong with some friendly competition between schools or houses even,” nodded Simon. Desiree Marchand brought up a different perspective linking major historical events to the tournaments. “Fantastic! Those events were linked together. Perhaps a distraction to let others take action?” He cast his eyes over the group and then turned to Caes who had been the next to offer his perspective. Ooh! Cultures and sharing knowledge. “Excellent point. Traveling and interacting with new people from various backgrounds and cultures can broaden everyone’s minds. Nice point!

He was just to turn to another student who had raised their hand to offer an answer when CHAOS erupted. Well not chaos- Hooper had appeared and Simon was about to chastise him for being late AND then saw him as a half chicken. Just like Arden. Had the two of them caused some mischief TOGETHER?! A bad spell to miss class, perhaps? Or upset an older student. “Mr Ridley-Rush, thank you for joining class. Because of your tardy arrival, I will be deducting five points from the Gryffindor House .”

He turned his attention towards Henry who was offering an answer. Financial wealth as an reward. “Yes! That’s true. The IMPS was a very nice reward,” he commented with a nod. “A good motivation. Thanks Mr. Hembree.” Perhaps other students could focus on the matter at hand the lesson instead of the chickens… Summer offered a nice perspective as well around house pride and gave a solid analogy too. “Indeed, Miss Valentine. House and school pride so a sense of unity and camaraderie internally and externally.

Ash’s answers were along the same vein as Summers. Simon chuckled at Ash’s comment. Did they all go wrong? “Not all of them but I’m afraid those ones never make the headlines or simply get glossed over. That’s the power of media there for you. Another good history topic to cover certainly, Miss Fox.

More and more students were focused on the student chickens were proving to be QUITE the distraction. Fortunately Mr Adara-Stark, bless his thoughtfulness, offered to seek the Healer. The sixth year had proven to be somewhat reliable so Simon simply paused and asked him to keep an eye on the younger two Gryffindors. “Keep an eye on your younger housemates. Senior housemates should keep an eye out on their younger peers..” Now Stark’s comment did earn a chuckle from Simon. “It does. It certainly would show up on some Muggle websites as This day in history…” His comment reminded him of Olivia’s obsession with that website. His sister was so focused on astrological and numerological signs when it came to her life.

Tahani’s answer was a great summary of some of her peers and she had nicely tied it together. He liked her point about bringing people together. It was a nice addition. Simon was impressed. “Well said.

Evan built on several of his peers’ ideas more and added in a nod to the several conspiracy theories. “Yes, it was a perfect opportunity to take a fun moment to move your own agenda forward. Good interpretation, Mr. Nam.

Remy’s pun while simultaneously crafted brilliantly did set Simon a little more on edge. She hadn’t answered his question or chosen to stay quiet and observe them. The behaviour didn’t sit well with him. He could agree with her about one of the chicken’s but not Miss Toros. Simon spoke quietly to Miss Gaeltheos. “It seems like Miss Toros is trying her best to pay attention to the lesson at hand whereas you are also distracting your peers by pointing out their appearance. Second hand embarrassment will not be tolerated in my lessons, Miss Gaeltheos. Have I made myself clear?” Simon was unaware of the full history of the situation so he was only going off of a snapshot.

Thankfully Bella was back on the topic at hand. Thank Merlin. “Fostering relations across cultures and increasing awareness. Good point, Miss Connolly.” His answer was a little lackluster as he was still mulling over Miss Gaeltheos’ pun and his response.

Simon was thoroughly distracted at this point while Mr Luck offered his answer. He did nod but caught onto Mr Luck’s offer. “Can you go get the Healer or Professor Hernandez? We may need an antidote,” he asked the seventh year. Then he tried his best to keep class moving. Miss Barton’s answer was terrific! “Yes, indeed. Good answer!

His eyes cast over Mr. Moose, Mr Evans, Miss Anders, and others that decided to remain quiet.. We’re they not participating because of the squawking? Simon’s eye twitched.

Mr. Ridley-Rush also didn’t want the attention or want help. He remained silent and simply observed the situation longer. He did see Mr. Ridley-Rush whisper to Miss Gaeltheos which because of Miss Gaeltheos’ nice pun sent Simon over the deep end. They were distractions! The behaviour itself turned Simon’s idea of simply removing points to a more stern reaction. “Mr Ridley-Rush, please stop distracting Miss Gaeltheos. I’d like to see you after class.

He sighed and took a deep breath before continuing. “We’re getting closer to the centre.” Pause again. Blue eyes flicked to monitor the students. “In the meantime, can anyone share a fact about the participants of either the Triwizarding Tournament of 1994-1995 or the IMPS Tournament of 2094-2095?

OOC: Ok, great responses sorry for my tardy response!! Next question is up. One fun fact from each student please if your student is willing. Loving the chaos! You’ll have one day before we move on!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Aria was not surprisingly amused by all the squawking. It was her little suspicion that those who were disrupting the class were doing so on purpose to draw attention to themselves. Or did they have a bet going about who could squawk the loudest? Though… Remy’s pun was so hilarious it brought out a loud snort from her. AH! Sorry, professor! Aria threw Eye Candy an innocent smile and pretended to be super interested in getting safely over the bit of branch she had just come across.

So…

What did Aria know about a participant from one of the tourneys? She was still much more interested in the IMPS tourney and that was where her focus remained. Her wiggling fingers went up again. “Kyle Baker won, which meant that Ilvermorny won the IMPS Tournament. I believe he won a scholarship to a university of his choice.”

Adam nodded at Professor Holden when he suggested getting the Healer or the Potions Master to come deal with the situation. That made sense...after all, if they ate something weird that was making them turn into chickens, they probably had to eat something ELSE to turn them back right? Excusing himself, he pushed past a few of his students to make his way to the back of the gathering and headed off to go find some help.
