BRR! It was COLD in the History of Magic classroom on the first morning of December, but Gabi wasn't phased at all. She'd lit numerous bluebell flames in jars around the room, setting them up so they levitated at different heights around the classroom and helped keep those chilling temperatures at bay so that it was nice and comfortable. The students couldn't very well concentrate on her lesson if they were freezing and worrying about their numb fingers and toes, yes?
Gabriela Recard was sitting at her desk, sorting through homework as the students filed in. Behind her on the blackboard, a number of publications had their covers ripped off and taped to the board:
SPOILER!!: Click me for pictures!
Come on in, have a seat and take out your things. Class will be starting shortly!
OOC: Hello hello hello! Welcome to your first OOC HoM class of the term! IC however, it is already December meaning you've had MANY lessons with Gabi already, so please RP accordingly. As always, please read the SSRPG rules and HoM Classroom rules prior to playing. Class will move on in a little over 24 hours! CLASS HAS STARTED!
For a while, Nem had liked to keep Recard guessing, just as a way of finding some kind of fun despite the drudgery of this place; a lot of these professors didn't know what to make of them, which made for a neat new game for a while. The fun had gone out of that weeks ago, but the patternless trend continued. One day they were pleasant and friendly, a model student, other days silent and unreadable, and plenty of others they didn't show up at all. The Headsman had already picked up on that last; don't even worry about it.
They were here today though, and though Nem felt the cold more than was strictly necessarily, multiple layers kept most of it at bay for the time being, so there was no discernible reaction from them on their entrance to the classroom. In fact, there wasn't much to go on at all as they headed for a seat in the back corner, by the window, and dropped their bag under their desk without taking anything out of it. "Morning."
Passing over the magazine covers on the blackboard in favour of staring through the window, Nem tilted their chair back on two legs and waited for the lesson to get underway.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
History of Magic was another subject that captured the first year. There was so much to be learned about the magical world and the Hufflepuff wanted to grasp as much as he possibly could. He was early in the classroom today, having found it at one try. Something he was rather pleased with seeing as only last week he had thought he had used a shortcut to the classroom but had ended up somewhere on the fifth floor???
His Hufflepuff scarf was wrapped snuggly around him as he entered the classroom, instantly taking note of the numerous bluebell flames in the jars before his gaze went to the professor seated at her desk. "Hello Professor Recard" he greeted before he walked to the desk at the front when he saw that he wasn't the first in class. The boy waved at the nice older Slytherin at the back near the window before he took his seat. He opened up his bag and began to place his textbook on top of his desk before he began to study the posters.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
The end of the year already. Claudine hardly dared to believe it but it remained a fact that time flew. She was all bundled, snug and warm as she stepped into the classroom. The board and the various papers covering it was rather eye catching so the Slytherin stood there observing it all for a moment. Interesting.
“Good morning, Professor,’’ Claudine greeted her Head of House. She headed in Daniel’s direction, even though the Gryffindor happened to be sitting at the front. “Hi, Daniel,’’ the girl said, announcing her presence and taking a spot on one of the seats beside him.
Ash did not care about the cold. Yeah, it was cold. Who cared? Ash let the cold bite at her fingers, felt it sink into her bones. That was one way to know you were alive. Cold didn't exist in dream worlds, and therefore Ash must be in reality. No extra layers today. She needed to know where she was.
Ash walked into the classroom. She took not of the posters. She took note of the people. Upstead and Daniel and Claudine. Ash would much prefer to sit next to Daniel and Claudine today. She sat next to Daniel and Claudine. She did not wave at Upstead. She did not make a big production out of it.
"Morning. Morning. Morning. And, morning." Yes, that's right. She even said morning to Upstead. None of the words she had spoken so far contained emotion or thought, so it was alright. It wasn't a good morning or a bad morning. It was just morning. Morning. Morning morning morning. Morning morning morning. It was the morning.
Ash took out a couple markers and started doodling on her arms. Because she felt like it. And really, who was it hurting? People would probably prefer the quiet version of Ash anyway. Of course they would.

Holidays were at the end of the month and then it would soon thereafter be her birthday. She’d be the big 1-2 which was weird to think about it because she felt like she JUST turned the big 1-1 a month or so ago. Time flew quickly at Hogwarts and she NEEDED to finish those holiday gifts for her friends. She needed to this ASAP.
It was really cold in this classroom.
Lisa folded her arms, crouching over herself to preserve heat as she walked further into the room. She noticed a few people were here already- Nemesis (she had learned of him but had yet to talk to him), Daniel, Claudine, and Ash. “Hello!” she greeted them with a wave before stopping in her tracks to examine the clippings that the Professor had for their lesson. “Hi Professor Recard. Newspaper articles... are those by Miss Skeeter?” She had read up on her in one of her brother’s textbooks and was intrigued to read exactly what was in those articles. “Can we read those later?” She was intrigued to understand what kind of voice Rita Skeeter had and just how shrill it was.
She took a seat in an open chair and watched Nemesis, wondering what he saw out the window.
History of Magic was something he enjoyed more than most of classes. It usually didn't involve any actual magic use, which was his preference currently. So Evan was actually in decent spirits as he entered the classroom, thankfully for the difference in temperature as he entered the room as compared to right outside. He'd forgotten how cold things could get at Hogwarts, and he was certainly glad for his scarf currently.
"Hello, Professor Recard." He offered his greeting, before entering and finding himself an unoccupied seat. He could see familiar faces in the room, and he offered them all hello head nods as he slid into a desk and began pulling out his notebook and pens for notes later on. He wasn't much in the mood for conversation so he found himself a fairly empty portion of seats. So far anyways, as he was the class would fill quickly once everyone else appeared.
Once he had things set out, he eyed the board curiously, examining the magazines and reading material covers. Were they going to study History by way of journalism today?

"Bonjour, Professor," Phoebe was more than happy to see Le Profeseur on this very fine, very chilly day, and she offered the woman a big smile before taking a seat. History of Magic wasn't her favorite subject, but she felt a real rapport with the professor. Maybe it was due to what they all went through last term, or the cheerful way the woman put up with her goading about being *gasp* French. Or probably it was that she hadn't laughed or doubted when Phoebe talked about learning more about being a Healer, and that meant the world.
"You have a very eclectic taste in reading materials, Professor. Some of those aren't allowed through the front door of our house."
Prior to History of Magic, Serena had spent some time outside so the transition from the snowy grounds to a sort of chilly classroom didn't phase her. She comfortable with the cold. It was the heat she minded.
"Hello, Professor Recard," she greeted politely. The only professor Serena greeted with actual words. Well, she might have added the herbology and flying professor to the list. It wasn't anything against them, it was just that she felt a little more comfortable around Recard. Which most likely had to do with the woman being her head of house.
Spotting a few familiar faces, Serena opted to go sit by Lisa...who was staring at an older student. Not just any student. "I've heard things about them," Serena whispered only for Lisa's ears.

She didn’t understand why Upstead was still looking outside. We’re they say dreaming or really focused on something flying around? Or just simply spacing out prior to History of Magic class starting? Lisa was intrigued.
Serena’s words had startled her. She jumped slightly in her seat before turning to her friend and hurriedly whispering. “Like what? I wonder what they’re thinking...” Or what they were looking at.... Curious, she was.

History of Magic was so boring, which was tragic because Kinsay liked Professor Recard. So despite the real temptation to take a nap in the middle of class, Kizzy always tried her absolute, 100% BEST to stay awake. Except sometimes her eyes got droopy and a rogue yawn escaped, but those thing really couldn't be helped. Maybe the cold weather would help keep her up because it was chiiiiiilly today.
"It's true," she chimed in right after Phoebe as she made her way into the classroom. "They're allowed through the window though, if you're extra sneaky about it." She smiled a cheeky smile before walking to a seat. "Are we making collages today?" Because THAT was a lesson Kinsay James could get behind. She wouldn't even consider napping through it or anything!

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona entered the classroom, thankful for the fact that Professor Recard had warmed up the room. "Morning, Professor," she greeted before finding a seat near Claudine. Fiona got herself ready for the lesson, hoping that she wouldn't perform dismally. After all, there was that niggling fear thanks to her OWL score in History of Magic.

Remy was looking forward the History of Magic. Who didn’t enjoy learning about the past of their world? But she had woken up so tired and cold that it really put a dampener on her mood. She was pleased that the classroom has been warmed up slightly. “Good morning, Professor.” Remy greeted before finding a seat by herself.
She hadn’t even noticed the posters hanging behind the Professor, and focussed on the floating bluebell flames instead.

Dahlia didn't mind the cold one bit, if anyone had ever taken notice of her clothing outside of lessons they would likely have noticed that. Having learned how to cast a heating charm on herself last term, she quickly worked to perfect it and now takes full advantage of it whenever she can. Like this morning. So yes, she had a simply warming charm already placed upon herself when she entered the History of Magic classroom.
"Good morning, Professor," she chirped happily, practically almost skipping over to an empty seat and sliding down onto the chair. One by one Lia took out her things for the lesson setting them on her desk as she always did before her blue eyes found the blackboard and settled on the magazine covers that were hanging there.

Kale Trent was for-suresies physically at lessons all this term. Physically. Mentally and emotionally, the sixth year had been very far away. But considering everything that had happened last term, well, he seemed to be doing pretty good. In fact, his distracted person didn't look to be from any distress. Nope.
But still. He'd been a distracted little golden retriever lately. So when he glided into the room kinda unaware, he barely had the thoughtfulness to give the Professor a proper hello. He quietly found his seat.
Alfred preferred the cold over warm weather, which was surprising, considering he grew up in the Mediterranean climate of the French Riviera. Because of that, his Slytherin scarf lay loosely on his neck as he walked into the classroom. "Good morning, professor." History of Magic was one of his favourite subjects, because who wouldn't want to learn how witches and wizards of old lived their lives? You could learn from the past, after all.
After spotting a few familiar faces, Alfred chose to go and sit near Lisa. He noticed Serena sitting on her other side, whispering something into her ear, following both of their eyes towards the person in question. They were interesting, he supposed. Cold and distanced, but still interesting. But the covers on the board seemed more interesting, so he chose to stare at that instead. Also because staring at people was rude.

Between the Ravenclaw scarf wrapped around his neck and the warming charms he'd placed on himself, Heath wasn't fussed about the cold. On the contrary, he found the history of magic classroom warmer than expected, so much so that the scarf and warming charms were no longer necessary. As he unwrapped the blue and bronze scarf from his neck, his eyes flicked toward the board. He studied the images, wondering how they would fit into today's lesson. Were they going to learn about a historical figure who was once featured in all of those publications? He racked his brains, but he couldn't think of a single person it could be. Oh, well, he supposed he'd find out soon enough!
As he made his way farther into the room, he greeted the professor with a nod and a slight smile. "Good morning, Professor Recard," he said as he passed her desk. Spotting a group of his friends (Claudine, Ash, and Fiona) with a firstie he didn't yet know (Daniel), he beelined for the seat nearest them. "Hey, everybody," he greeted, nodding in acknowledgement to each person in turn. To the younger student, he said, "I don't think we've met before. I'm Heath." See, he could be friendly!
He neatly arranged his supplies on the desk in front of him, genuinely looking forward to this class. He was reasonably confident, having received an E on the OWL, and even if he found himself totally lost later, it was a nice break from the more chaotic subjects.

Eden hated History of Magic most of the time. It had been one of the classes she'd mentally disconnected from after being sent to The Room last term. Honestly, she'd mistrusted it even before then. She knew Professor Recard didn't support the Neo-Alliance, but Eden still couldn't shake the deep feeling of distrust she had developed in regards to this class.
She gave the pictures a cursory look.
"Hello, Professor Recard," Eden smiled shallowly at the teacher before taking her normal seat towards the back wall of the classroom.
She still showed up on time and gave Professor Recard due respect, unlike...certain intimidating sixth years already present...but for the most part the girl just sat in the back row and half-heartedly pretended to take notes. She did appreciate the professor's attempts to cozy up the classroom. The little blue flames were gorgeous and would likely be one of her distractions today, along with last-minute Christmas shopping.

With that last greeting, it was officially time to begin the lesson! Gabi waved her wand and the door closed - anyone who would enter now was officially LATE.
"Good morning, everyone," Gabi grinned at the students. "If you're cold, please feel free to summon one of the jars I've provided to warm yourself at your desk. While you do that - you probably have noticed the many magazine and newspaper covers I have taped to the board," she said, pausing and waving her hand towards the chalkboard to point them out - just in case they hadn't been paying attention.
"Today we'll be talking about media - specifically, the influence that media publications, such as these, have on the wizarding world and their influence in historical events," she explained. "For the mini activity, I'd like you analyze each cover and tell me what you think that publication is about. Some of you may be familiar with these already! Tell me what about the cover led you to your conclusion - was it the cover? The title? The wording? You can brainstorm alone or with a partner if you'd like! When you're ready, raise your hand and I will begin to call on you to explain your answers to the class," she explained. "You may begin!"
OOC: You heard the lady! It's mini activity time! All that is required of this activity is ONE post sharing your answers with the class, but as Gabi said, you can brainstorm with a partner first before you present your answers (as long as both partners make their own individual post sharing why you came up with your answers, you'll get full credit!) Just raise your hand, assume you've been called on and give a little explanation to the class. Since I'm working all day tomorrow, I'll be moving class along in about 40ish hours. Let me know if you have any questions!!

They were talking about Media, were they? He couldn't help but wonder if this meant they would also be talking specifically on media intertwined with what happened last term, but part of him hoped they were going to have a lesson where it was not mentioned. It was important but... still often hard to think about.
For now, this was an easy thing to start with. Old magazines. Staring at the publications, he jotted down his answers for each before raising his hand and waiting to be called on. "Seeker Weekly appears to be about a previous Quidditch world cup, Bulgaria vs. Ireland. The title, graphics and even the name all seem to indicate that. The Quibbler issue looks like.. an advertisement. Mainly because of the box on the front for an inquiry to be sent in." It was hard to tell from this far away. He probably should have asked if he could go closer. "The Daily Prophet looks like it would have been dated from around the time Harry Potter was in his... fifth year at Hogwarts, I believe. The title: Dumbledore daft or dangerous? suggests that, since historically that's the biggest time I can think of when the ministry was very openly against Dumbledore and his claims of you know who being back." Was he oversharing at this point?
He stared some more at the last one. Witch Weekly... wasn't that a gossip magazine? "The last one, the pink, looks like it might have some cake recipes in it? Based on the picture of the witch with a cake." That could have just been misleading to get people to read it though because.. who didn't love cake?

“Fantastic!” nodded Lisa to Recard. She looked forward to reading more of the articles and really understanding the reports behind it. Maybe there was a common voice or bias throughout all the threads?
Lisa looked up from her whispering to see ALFRED sit NEXT to HER! She was super happy. “Hi!” she whispered to him before hearing the Professor start the lecture. She’d have to catch up with him later on. She had some more information on the side project that she, Daniel, and him were working on. Though speaking of potions, she might have to consult an expert on that one. She scribbled a note to herself in her notebook and then began to pay attention to the lesson at hand. Well let’s take a look at these articles....
The first one was probably one that Jasper would love. It was ALL about Quidditch and whatnot. The second one with the crazy glasses looked bizarre and fun. It kinda reminded her of a Muggle Ripley’s Believe It Or Not book.... The third was the Prophet - she knew that much but it looked like the stuff her father read. Opinionated, scathing pieces of writing on a subject or person. And the fourth magazine looked like something her mother would read or one that her and Maya would flip through curiously at the book shop. Surely it was filled with tips, tricks, and relationship advice... Stuff to figure out the ‘special friend’ thing.
Forming her own opinions, she looked to see if someone wanted to partner up. “Anyone want to partner?”

More and more, Noah was convinced that for today's class, they would dabble in journalism... or writing in general, perhaps to inspire those like himself who were soon bound for University. But anyway, that wasn't the point, for now, at least. From his seat at the very back of the classroom, the Gryffindor summoned a jar of bluebell flame and warmed his stomach with it. Why? Well, let's just say that he's been putting extra effort into those wonderful abs of his, and he was feeling sore from all the workout he's been doing. No pain no gain, correct? And one of the best remedies for sore muscles was heat.
While he cradled the jar against his stomach, Noah chewed his inner cheek in thought as he stared at the Quidditch magazine. Of course, it got his attention immediately as it was his primary interest. He then looked at the others and... well, it didn't tickle his fancy, and immediately went back to Seeker Weekly. Hmm.
"All the magazines do have a target audience, and it's not so much about the colours or the wording for me, but the general interest it could invoke from an enthusiast or a prospective new follower. So for me, it's more of the branding side. The more reputable or known the publisher or author is, the better." he said, squinting his eyes as he stared at all the magazine covers in front of him, "It's like, 'Oh, Snitch Weekly has a new issue, I should get it.' simply because I trust the publisher. But for the sake of new prospects, I suppose the wording and colours come to play. Like the words, 'special edition', or 'free', or maybe the use of colour and good images," like that gorgeous lady on the cover of Witch Weekly. Sure, he can't be bothered with the contents of the magazine, but he'd most likely check it out because, hello pretty face.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona studied the various covers with a great deal of thought, her fingers softly drumming on the desk. Soon she raised her hand and gave her thoughts. "Well, Seeker Weekly's title alone is a reference to Quidditch and that particular copy is all about the Grand Final match between Bulgaria and Ireland of the Quidditch World Cup. The one from the Quibbler appears to be a form of enticing new subscribers via having a free pair of those er... Spectrespecs. The one from the Daily Prophet is a slanderous article against Dumbledore during the time that Lord Voldemort had returned. The Witch Weekly publication seems to have housewives as their target readership judging by the pink colour scheme and the image of the witch magically making a cake."
Fiona paused for a moment and folded her arms. "Personally I don't like what Witch Weekly had done. It is like it is saying only women bake at home. Why can't there be a publication for everyone?"

Once the lesson had officially started, that’s when Remy had noticed the magazine covers behind the Professor. They didn’t look all that exciting to her - maybe the Quibbler did a little. She wasn’t totally sure how to analyse ALL of them.
Uhhhh… “Maybe the Quibbler magazine is aimed at kids because of the free spectrespecs,” which by the way, Remy NEEDED a pair. “It’s quite colourful, too, so I’d say it’s for a younger audience.” All of these answers were guesses. She looked towards the newspaper and studied its details the best she could. “The bold titles on the newspaper quickly draw readers in to each article, which is its purpose, really.” Duh. News was news.
“The other two look a little boring, I think.” No doubt the contents would be interesting, they just didn’t appeal to her. “The Quidditch one could have been made real fun and colourful!” Since Quidditch was awesome and all that.

Nothing like getting to argue in the spirit of participation points, right? Eden perked up at the opportunity to raise her hand arised, specifically after Jenovick's response.
"I think Seeker Weekly is about Quidditch as that is a Quidditch position and the whole cover is about Quidditch. I think the Quibbler is a kid's magazine judging by the free paper glasses, and that the Daily Prophet is a newspaper because it gets delivered here every morning and has the news on it," Eden didn't really care about that bit as much...onwards to the arguing!
"I disagree with Jenovick's answer, professor. I think that a woman baking a cake on the front isn't saying only women can bake. The magazine's pink color and title make it seem like it's geared towards women, not everyone, and that's okay. Just because other magical people aren't the target audience doesn't mean they can't read it."
Can you tell which kinds of magazines Eden liked? Or which student she'd noticed not getting into trouble last year?
