Default HoM Lesson 1 - Ancient Greek Mythology

Upon entering the History of Magic classroom on this crisp fall afternoon, you'll notice a couple of pictures on the board, probably hinting at the theme of today's lesson:

Quote:
Or...maybe not? Seems like an odd assortment of pictures...

Either way, the classroom is laid out the same as it always is, in neat little rows with room for Gabi to walk around as she's lecturing, like she always does. The blonde is sitting on her desk in the front of the room, but even though she's smiling, she seems...tired. She's been that way for the last few lessons, actually. Perhaps having your work place taken over by a hostile group intent on muggle destruction isn't great for one's sleep schedule.

"Good afternoon class, come in and take a seat," she says cheerfully as the class begins to file in.

OOC: Hello all! Welcome to your first HoM class of the term! Remember, IC there have been MANY HoM lessons that your character has already attended, so they are already familiar with Gabi and how she operates. Class will move on in roughly 30ish hours CLASS HAS STARTED, PLEASE DO NO POST YOUR CHARACTER ARRIVING LATE! As always please familiarize yourself with my History of Magic classroom rules AND the SS RPG rules if you haven't already. Thanks!

CLASS PROGRESSION:
Question One - Which ancient muggle societies do you think were influenced by witches and wizards?
Question Two - Why did Ancient Greeks create stories to cover up their true identities?

Doom and Gloom.

That's all that this place felt like this term. Sure weird things were expected, but this was getting to be way too much. All Charlie wanted was to learn more skills with her wand and flirt with cute boys. Yet here she was.

Setting her book down, grabbing her notebook, and pulling her sweater around her at the sight of the hooded figures she tried to put her mind at ease regarding them. "Afternoon Professor." That old saying of children should be seen and not heard was seriously the only thing getting her through this term.

Violet winced involuntarily as one of the hooded figures shot a spell at Ashley--oh, why couldn't she ever hold her tongue? Hadn't she learned by now that these guys weren't kidding around? Violet wondered what they'd done to her, but there was not much anyone could do about it as long as class was going on and those goons were watching.

If anyone thought this was a way to improve the way students learned, they had rocks in their heads.

Since Professor Eris’s departure, Professor Recard had become Heath’s favorite professor here. That was why she still looked forward to History of Magic lessons… at least, as much as he was capable of looking forward to anything anymore. Mostly he just kept his head down and tried to block out his surroundings. The more he thought about his circumstance, the harder it was to keep his emotions in line. As such, he barely gave the pictures on the board a thought as he walked into the classroom. Cyclops, Loch Ness Monster, winged horses… He didn’t feel like making the extra effort to guess the lesson today, but he already had a hunch where it was going. Probably instances of magical creatures attacking muggles, he thought grimly. That would fit right in with Rosier’s twisted views…

The hooded figures’ presence was also largely ignored. The only thing that did stand out to Heath was that Professor Recard seemed more tired than usual, and who could blame her? Any other time, he would’ve greeted her with a sympathetic smile, but smiling in front of the hoods was probably asking for trouble. He liked his teeth in his mouth where they belonged, thanks! Instead he settled for a polite nod in acknowledgement. “Good afternoon, Professor Recard,” he said.

As if on autopilot, he joined Claudine and Fiona at the back of the room. There were three reasons behind his choice of seating. !) Sitting at the back put him farther away from the hoods. 2) He didn’t have to worry about his height blocking the view of someone sitting behind him. Most of all, sitting there with his friends was a familiar habit, and he just wanted one thing in his life to feel normal! He took out his supplies and looked to the front, waiting for the lesson to start.

"Are we learning about how muggles are horrible and dumb? Because that sure looks like what we're learning about. Just like we learn every day." And honestly Ash couldn't care. Caring was for people who wanted to feel pain. And Ash didn't want to feel pain. She slouched into a random chair in the front and stuck her hands in her pockets. Were they learning about how muggles were blind or how muggles were dumb? She couldn't decide. And it didn't much matter.

Ashley Fox never failed to darken a room she walked into unhappy.
Poor Ashley was really getting the short end of the stick when it came to her Hogwarts experience. Possession last term, now this? Gabi had to give her props for at least still showing up to classes - especially after the whole LIAR thing. "The lesson isn't really focused on muggles too much today," she assured her, without flat out saying NO. She was here to teach HISTORY, and while she DID have to mention muggles in her lesson, she was planning on brushing past it quickly. Hopefully.

"Good morning, Professor Recard." Quinn said as he sat down in one of the desks. A thought popped into his head as he did—Professor Recard was also the nurse so... perhaps he could pop by and see her sometime to ask about healing magic? Quinn had read up on that, too, though he hadn't been able to practice any. His wand was supposed to be especially good at it, and perhaps with the help of the Professor he would be able to practice and get at least fairly decent at some of the spells. It would be helpful if... something were to happen.

Quinn looked up at the board—a cyclops, the Loch Ness Monster and pegasi. Would today's lesson be on magical creatures that Muggles knew about through myths and legends? That's what it seemed like, at least.
"Good morning, Mister Kingsley," she greeted the first year as he entered. He seemed to have a positive attitude about the lesson today, which was promising.

"Good morning, Professor Recard," she said automatically as she entered and seated herself. But on looking up at the pictures at the front of the classroom, she had to check for a moment to make sure she was in the right class and not in Care of Magical Creatures.
Gabi felt an extra pang of sympathy for Violet, being that she was one of her Slytherins, and she knew she had been having a rough time with everything lately. She smiled at her gently and nodded. "Good day Miss Blackthorne," she greeted her in return.

He soon took a seat and leisurely sat back in it, his eyes finding the pictures on the board. "Oh, cool," he blurted out, mostly to himself. But maybe class would be interesting if they'd be talking about abraxans, kelpies, and... some sort of troll with one eye? It was no care of magical creatures class, but history of magic could be cool too, depending on the subject of the day.
Gabi chuckled a little at his enthusiasm. "Hello Mister McCarthy," she greeted him as he sat down.

With her things laid out neatly on the desk in front of her and her bag placed beneath her chair, Lia finally looked at the photos on the board. Interesting. Right away she was curious about the lesson but she tried not to let her thoughts get to far ahead of themselves.
"Good afternoon to you too, Miss Donovan," Gabi nodded in reply to the Ravenclaw with a soft smile.

Professor Recard SAVED her sister and for that, Kinsay James would be forever grateful.

With that in mind, she always felt a little less on edge when coming into the History classroom. Professor Recad would keep them safe even if Kizzy could tell she looked sleepy. To be fair the only reason why Kinsay had been able to sleep the past few weeks was because of the mega-bed she had made with Emmerson in the dormitory. Did Professor Recard have a best friend? Maybe Kizzy would suggest she make a mega-bed with Professor Varma.

Stopping just in front of the board, Kinsay looked up at the photos for a moment or two before moving to a seat. "Hi." She liked the first picture best. What a silly looking cyclops. "Are we playing a game today?" That would be nice.
"Perhaps later in the class," Gabi said with a smirk at Kinsay as she walked in. She was glad that she seemed to be getting more interest out of both her and Emmerson considering their rocky start last term.

They were all kind of on the same team this year as well, against Rosier and his goons, which probably helped.

The wanded one soon found that reason in the form of one insolent little mudblood (astrocat). The way she talked, one might think she didn't want to learn why muggles were "horrible and dumb". Then how about a manners lesson instead? A jet of light shot from the tip of the hooded figure's wand, and the child would soon find her tongue glued to the roof of her mouth. She would learn to hold her tongue one way or another. It was for the greater good.
Welp. She'd been hoping for a relaxing lesson, something to take the minds of the children OFF this whole occupation thing - of course that was wishful thinking.

Gabi's jaw tensed and she looked at the hooded figure, taking a deep breath to calm herself before addressing him. "Was that necessary? She will not be able to participate in the lesson like that," she pointed out, although she was sure that the hooded figure didn't care. But perhaps it would work? Get them to reverse it so she could discuss how terrible muggles were at history??

Great. Now everyone was going to be nervous as they entered the room. "Hello Miss Phillips," she told her with a smile, tying to ignore the hooded figures as much as possible.

She also wondered if she had had a chance to talk to Headmaster Rosier yet. At the sight of the hooded figures, though, she decided not to ask and merely gave her a polite bow of the head instead. "Good day, Professor Recard," she said in a stately manner before taking a place near Morgan, who greeted Recard in a way that made Aboli nervous, given the hooded guys nearby. "Be careful there, McCarthy," she offered gently, but without looking at him.
"Hello Miss Song," Gabi greeted the former prefect with a smile, still doing her best to ignore the hooded figures stationed in her classroom like they were expecting chaos to break out.

Claudine hurried away to select a seat at the very back of the room as usual.

Only then did she take a look at the pictures before the room. Bewildered, she studied them. What in the world were they learning about today?
The fact that even Claudine was worried about the hooded figures was...alarming. The Slytherin alway seemed so confident and to see her hesitant about something was odd.

"Hello Miss Blaze," she greeted her.

Nothing too out of the ordinary in their inscrutable demeanour today, no different from the rest of the term, which was in turn no different from the previous term. They'd noticed, naturally, that the Hug-a-Hoodie brigade were present, but that was hardly surprising at this point, and after spotting them out of the corner of their eye, Nem had gone on behaving like they weren't even there.

Act like you don't see them, but remember they always see you. A general guideline Nem was ostensibly operating by, and one they had seen fit to pass on to their little brother as well, though it probably hadn't been all that necessary. Couldn't be too careful though; the kid was a liability.

With their writing equipment all ready to go and textbook set to one side, Nem looked, not up at the pictures on the board, but in the direction of the window, and waited.
Seemed she wasn't the only one trying to avoid looking at the hooded intruders. "Good afternoon to you too," she said with a small smile at Nem as they pointedly looked away from the figures and out the window instead.

Her blue eyes immediately noticing the two hooded men sitting on either side of Professor Recard's desk as she waited for everyone to arrive. Her eyes not lasting on them for more than a mere second, not changing her calm expression as her attention was back on the professor to greet her, "Good afternoon Professor.."

Immediately occupying a seat for herself as she waited for the lesson to begin, noting that she was not too far from her friend Morgan, but did not greet him as she normally would have.
"Good afternoon," Gabi nodded curtly at Faye as she entered. The continued presence of the hooded figures was making her nervous, as it usually did after a while - especially when they flanked her like that! She needed eyes on the back of her head to watch them...

"Good afternoon, professor," she said, taking a seat next to Quinn.

She eyed the pictures on the board. The Loch Ness monster and...a one eyed ogre or cyclops or something, and some flying horses. What a way to get everyone wondering what they'd be talking about today. Magical creatures in history...could be discussing the Statue of Secrecy. Reasons to abolish the Statute of Secrecy and take over the world, probably.
Gabi had begun to feel a small ounce of relief every time a student who came from a muggle background made it into her class safely, and Mamie was no exception. "Good afternoon Miss Turov," she nodded in greeting towards the girl.

And then she spotted the good squad lurking, and Phoebe's shoulders went up as she slunk toward a seat near Morgan. "My apologies for speaking out of turn, Professor." Just learn to shut up already, James!
Poor Phoebe. So impulsive! It had already gotten her in to such trouble, and since they were having to put on a show here...she cleared her throat and sat up a bit straighter. "Just don't let it happen again, Miss James," she told her curtly. Not that she agreed that she had spoken out of term. She didn't care what any of them said to each other as long as they quieted down when class started...but best keep up appearances...

There might’ve been a tiny hope that this would be one of the rare lessons not invaded by the Neo-Alliance. Which, she wasn’t entirely sure she understood what was so new about it, since the beliefs seemed the same as what she’d learned from previous HoM lessons or just idle reading. What with it being OWL year and all, although she was questioning if those would be normal now too.

In fact, she wasn’t surprised at all to see the two hooded figures flanking Healer Recard at her desk. By now, the hope was just the spark that kept her going, not a true expectation. “Good afternoon, Professor Recard,” she greeted, also like usual and accompanied by a polite smile, before she found a seat near Faye and therefore also Morgan. The latter of which she silently agreed with Aboli about. The hooded figures seemed to take everything very seriously after all. Keeping their heads down was much better. She’d much rather just learn whatever the healer wanted to teach them, what a cyclops ogre, a kelpie and the Beauxbatons Abraxans had in common.
"Good afternoon," Gabi greeted Gracelyn as the Hufflepuff walked in and took a seat.

The hooded figures. Fun ruiners. Big snitches.

Well NOW she couldn't go and say ANYTHING even vaguely Muggle-ish, lest she acquire some stitches from the snitches. Her mouth now set in a firm line, Bernie settled for a mumbled, "Hello HealerProfessor," and went off to find an inconspicuous seat far, far away from the snitch brigade.

Her seat happened to be in the very back, directly next to Nem. Perfect. She might even be able to get a view of their parchment if she angled herself and slouched just right. Who needed to steal answers from Eiji Rasting when Nemesis Upstead, darling little angel-demon, beloved pet of the new headmaster, was available? Bernie even set up her desk JUST LIKE THEM.

What was the saying about imitation and flattery? Ah yes, it was essential to survival at Hogwarts.
Gabi had to admit, she was...a bit nervous for Bernadette this term, giving her general approach to things and the fact that she was muggleborn. BUT so far she had been keeping her head down, which was good and also a relief for Gabi. The fewer kids she had to patch up this term, the better. She nodded in greeting at Bernie as she watched her take her seat.

There were definitely some unwelcomed visitors in the room. This was definitely not the Hogwarts experience he had envisioned a while back.

Ugh, I hate it here.
"Good afternoon, more like," Gabi smiled with a small teasing grin at the Slytherin boy as he came in. Perhaps he had forgotten to wear a watch today and had missed the lunch rush?

Finding a spot by Kizzy, the blonde offered her friends in the room a small-ish smile and waited for class to start.

Atlas had not been the same since the incident with the jarvey and the vacuum that had made a home in his chest only expanded and intensified every time he saw them in class. So Atlas did not greet the professor, he couldn't even open his mouth, and instead made for a seat in the classroom that positioned himself the furthest way from the Neo-Alliance members as possible. Even if it was only temporary, because you couldn't be menacing and imposing if you just stood in one place, it gave the Gryffindor a moment to breathe. A moment to not see a blinding jet of green light.

Head down, the blonde set to getting his things out and arranging his inkwell and quill on his desk just so.
Poor kid. All these first years...this was their first experience with Hogwarts, and this Neo-Alliance was ruining it for them! She nodded in acknowledgment to the young Flamsteed boy before turning to the next student who entered.

Don't draw attention and you don't get hexed like Ashley who still didn't learn anything. Only agree and never make it sound like you didn't mean it. "It was satisfying--I blew them up, too." She added, eagerly. Totttaaalllllyyy not made up at aaalllllll.
...oh good Merlin.

Emmerson was being a BIT extra but what else was new and she hoped the hooded figures either didn't catch on (unlikely) or just...didn't care. She was doing what they wanted after all, yes?

"Really? How...fascinating," was all Gabi could bring herself to say. She grinned at her and nodded like she was interested, her smile just a bit TOO wide...realizing a moment too late that that probably looked fake as well, dropping her smile instantly and clearing her throat to greet the next student.

They were watching everyone in this room, just waiting to pick them off. He was sure of it. With his mum and dad both being in perfectly respectable wizarding careers, as a healer and dragonologist respectively, he knew he didn’t have nearly as much to be afraid of as his muggleborn classmates, but he was still absolutely terrified. Devin looked at the pictures, each of which seemed to be a magical creature. Not just any creatures, but ones that had made their way into muggle lore. So, maybe this lesson was supposed to be about how muggles got everything wrong in their accounts of these magical creatures? He had come to understand by now that Mr. Scary Headmaster was making all the professors teach them about how bad muggles were. Morally he knew that he wasn’t above muggles, but he had seen what the hoods were capable of and what they were willing to do with students who dared defy them. For now he was going to hold his tongue, and he was certainly not going to suck up to the hoods like his housemate Emmerson seemed to be doing.

"Good afternoon, Professor," she said tiredly, noting Professor Recard's apparent exhaustion as well. It seemed like everyone at Hogwarts was having trouble sleeping lately.

Avalon took a seat near Aboli and Morgan, giving her fellow classmates a nod. If they weren't standing right in front of her, she would have offered a sarcastic comment about the hooded figures to her friends. Another one who'd lost her badge for outside reasons - poor girl. Gabi smiled at Avalon and nodded in greeting. "Good afternoon Miss Sinclair," she greeted her.

Oh thank Merlin Kale was keeping his head down and his mouth shut. She felt bad for him, of course - and worried about him, and his sister, and Trent himself - but it made her job a LOT easier when he kept his wits about him. "Good day, Mister Trent," she responded.

Setting her book down, grabbing her notebook, and pulling her sweater around her at the sight of the hooded figures she tried to put her mind at ease regarding them. "Afternoon Professor." That old saying of children should be seen and not heard was seriously the only thing getting her through this term.
"Good afternoon Miss Rivers," the young Gryffindor got a nod of greeting as well before Gabi's eyes darted to the hooded figures once more, making sure they weren't doing anything else nefarious before she continued.

"Good afternoon Mister Jones," Gabi said in response to Heathcliff as he entered...and just in time too, because there were just a few moments left before class started!

"Hello everyone - now that we're all here, we can begin," Gabi announced, closing the door with a wave of her wand. Hopefully that would also keep out any more...unwanted visitors. She glanced at the hooded figures one more time, just to assure they weren't going anywhere, before turning back and facing the class. Out of sight, out of mind for now.

"Today we will be discussing how witches and wizards had an impact in the ancient history of the muggle world," she paused, remembering the hooded figures once again, which made her change her tone just slightly. "specifically in the time periods prior to 900 AD, where witches and wizards lived amongst the muggles - albeit it with far more advanced technologies than them, basically doing them favors with their magic," she said. There, was that enough to appease the hooded figures for this part of the lesson? A few anti-muggle statements here and there was usually enough to keep them off her back.

"My first question is this - which ancient society do you think has the most instances of witches and wizards occurring in their history? Think overall about all the things magical society may have ultimately been responsible for - science, education, government, architecture, lure - there are many things to consider as you come up with an answer," she explained. There were MANY possibilities that she would accept for answers.

OOC: Hello everyone! Let's just right on in to question one - pick an ancient society, any ancient society, and explain how you think witches or wizards had an impact on them! There are so many ways you can approach this question so get creative and try not to repeat answers!

We will move on in about 24 hours! As always if you need me just nudge me or address me in your title.

See, Recard could play the game, and Aboli was appreciative of this. Of course the head of Slytherin knew better, though.

Ancient societies though. Her mind flickered to thinking about Valencia, who she was sure would love this lesson if it was information rich enough. But...they had to name an ancient society and then say how mAGIC influenced it? Well, Aboli didn't kNOW that information yet, Recard. That's why she was HERE. But she raised her hand regardless.

"I'm just taking a guess here, but I suppose....uh...well, the ancient Greeks have a lot of mythology stories that muggles deem fake but are probably based upon actual magical happenings at the time...right? So magical folk influenced their whole...religion, I guess. With the gods and goddesses and stuff? Just a guess."
She shrugged. History was interesting and all, but there were other things she enjoyed reading about more.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

See, this was about as compliant as Ash was ever going to get. Uttering the words 'muggles are dumb' was ABSOLUTELY unheard of. And now her mouth was glued shut. She nodded at Devin. Had that kid ever seen her act normal? Nope. Ash thought about several things. She could write something on her arm, but that would be not very helpful to the lesson, and also very vague. Limited space. Alternatively, she could shut up and pretend to be compliant while still not answering the question. And yeah, she picked the second one. Instead, she just "nodded appreciatively" at what other people were saying, looking like she cared about this discussion.

Ash also looked miserable, although given the fact that she had looked miserable for the entirety of the school year, the hooded figures probably wouldn't notice. After all, they had never seen her any other way. Right?

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie hmmmmed thoughtfully about how ancient wizards may have helped ancient Muggles in societies. She had never really paid attention in her Muggle history classes. All she had was random fun facts from media. Plus, she wasn't sure how wizards could have really taught muggles anything about government or education, given it was a wizard school that had been invaded by extremists this year, not a Muggle school.

Inventing things to make life better though...that was where magic could come in handy. She raised her hand.

"Professor, I think the ancient Chinese created really advanced explosives. Like fireworks. Maybe they had help...or maybe even stole...from a wizard, like a potion or something." She thought it more likely the ancient Chinese were just very smart and worked hard, but they were supposed to bad-talk Muggles. So stealing potions it was.

....oh, that's what they were discussing, then? Bernie slumped down in her seat already, a depressing, sinking feeling weighing gluing her to her chair as she picked up what Recard was putting down. This was just... a wiffle ball of a question. It was too easy. Still, Bernie was half-afraid of being punished for NOT answering, so she raised her hand. Docile. Polite.

"I agree with Aboli," she answered simply. Plus, everyone knew the Greeks had some good stories about the Cyclops on the board there. There. She'd answered. She didn't really CARE to hear about wizards being better than Muggles and inventing this or that. Did it matter if MOST of the world didn't even know their great inventors (or whatever) were wizards? WHO CARED?

She focused on her parchment after answering, tempted to start doodling angry torando swirls.

It really seemed like Professor Recard was actively trying to stay on their side. At least, the topic of discussion didn’t seem necessarily anti-Muggle, and considering everything that history really was, Gracelyn didn’t see how the Neo-Alliance could really alter what they were taught here. The downside was that the first answer she’d come up with was the same as Aboli had said, but she really wanted to offer something new. Especially since Bernie had already agreed.

And then a thought had occurred. “What about the ancient Celts and like the Scots and the ancient peoples right here? We already know Merlin was a real wizard, and a lot of the other people from their legends. Maybe even the myths of faerie were actually just us influencing the Muggles of that time,” she suggested, raising her hand. Besides, there was obviously a picture of the Loch Ness monster up there and everyone knew it was just a kelpie.

The professor got a quiver of a smile at her response, and Phoebe felt better. She wasn't going to ruin everything this quickly in the class, apparently, and Recard didn't seem to be upset at her. In spite of that face she was making that pretended the contrary.

As for the question, which Phoebe was going to answer with a straight face and absolutely no comic relief, she agreed with the answer Aboli and Bernie had given. Not much elaboration there, right? "I mean, maybe there were a ton of wizards congregated in the Middle East. Didn't the ancient people, like, discover all sorts of impressive science and mathematical principles? And created early writing systems? Sounds super magically influenced." Or whatever.

All the muggle hating comments made Cece feel sick, even if she knew deep down that people were doing it to protect themselves. She had done it to protect herself. But no matter how many times comments were made, she'd never get used to the stomach twisting feeling they brought on.

"I was thinking about the ancient Egyptians, Professor. I know there are plenty mentions of magic tied to them."

In response to her sister's teasing, Kinsay broke out into a huge grin and couldn't help the immediate onset of giggles she— O___________O

.....

um.

OOPS.

Upon the realization that there were hooded figures present, Kinsay clapped a hand over her mouth just as quickly as she had started giggling. Big oops. And after her sister's apology, Kinsay jumped in with a quiet, embarrassed one of her own. "Sorry, Professor."

She slumped further into her seat, feeling a little defeated. Those ... things sucked the fun out of everything. It also didn't help that Emm hadn't taken the seat that Kizzy had been saving for her. Everything was terrible. So terrible that Kinsay didn't really want to answer the first question... Not until Phoebe answered, anyway, because her sister's words sparked a very immediate thought and Kizzy's hand shot up into the air instantly.

"Wizards invented the alphabet!?!?!?!?!" Early writing systems meant alphabet, right? Color Kinsay impressed AND surprised!

The young Slytherin covered his blushing face upon realizing his innocent mistake in time zones, there was still some adjusting to do. Will work on it. Silently giggling behind his hands he took a deep breath to regain his composure and get back to focusing on the sweet, dulcet voice of the beautiful professor.

Thinking about the question and the examples Professor Recard was giving, Jean-Luc nibbled at his cheek and furrowed his eyebrows whilst he thought about it. Well there were many societies throughout history and out of all those the Romans stood out to him. Raising his hand, ”In my opinion I would say the Romans during the middle ages.” He responded. ”It is widely known witches and wizards taught how to brew potions for medicinal purposes. They also inspired charms and incantations that led to a growing trend of spiritual relief in the ever evolving society that shaped the time period.” Muggles began fearing what they couldn’t really understand (as one does) and then the medieval witch trials would ensue along with religious and spiritual prosecutions concerning health, due to demonic possessions caused by magic (or so it was believed), but Jean-Luc thought it would be a bit much to add, considering the hooded figurines were just lingering around like the plague. Gosh the middle ages sure were magic. Sarcasm fully intended.

Yes, the spell was necessary. No, they would not reverse it. If the professor wanted the spell undone, she would have to do it herself and face whatever consequences came her way. Although the hooded figures refused to dignify the professor's words with a response, they were not ignored. Every detail was recorded on the parchment.

The one with the parchment continued taking profuse notes as the woman spoke. Interesting topic. There was a right way and a wrong way to approach it, and for her sake, they hoped she chose the right way. While one of the hooded figures took notes, the other roamed the rows of student desks. Better choose your answers carefully, children!

Dahlia sat up straighter in her chair, the mere presence of the Hooded figures in the room more than enough to make her uncomfortable. It was getting incredibly difficult to focus in classes with them around.

Chewing at her bottom lip, Lia thought the question over. Did she have to choose only one society? She could hear the Hooded Minions walking around, making her not want to take her eyes off of her desk. If she said the wrong thing, would she be punished for it? What if she didn't answer at all?

It was without much thinking that she raised her hand and gave the very first thing that popped into her head. "I'm not entirely sure who society this had a bigger impact on but what about folktales and things like that? Surely muggles can't be that creative to come up with the creatures and things in those stores. Witches and Wizards had to have told them or shown them or something... and the muggles that created the stories made money off it." The wording felt all wrong in her mouth as she said it but she hoped it was enough to keep the Hooded guys at bay.

Oh- Oh- He knew this one! Maybe. Possibly. NEWGRANGE. Maybe? That was like wizard-y???? And even muggles knew about it and went to visit it every summer and winter solstice like.

So, before he could reconsider, Cal raised his hand and answered. "We've Newgrange in Ireland, like. For winter solstice." He wasn't sure exactly what it was or how it worked. Just that the sun shone right inside during winter solstice and it was mad accurate. "The sun shines in, like, only during winter solstice."
That should count right? He thought it sounded pretty magical anyway.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Emm thought she'd been doing a swell job of trying to get the squad to see she was one of the good ones (and was grateful Professor Recard had joined in) but having received little to no acknowledgement at all had her rethinking that.

Well, at least she got to keep her tongue, yeah?

Small victories.

Emm hunkered down in her seat, hoping to sorta be invisible if she couldn't be a star. It was easier on account of the professor asking questions she didn't know the answer to. It meant she could be quiet, lay low and keep her thoughts to herself.

But what if that was the wrong choice? What if they WANTED her to answer even if she didn't know???

Emmerson glanced over at the hoodie bully squad, deciding it best not to take that chance. Immediately, she latched on to whatever Kizzy had said. "Yeah! We invented the alphabet!" Nevermind Kizzy was asking a question, you just had to roll with it. "And um...um...we were so nice that we shared it with muggles after and we did it with magic because magic is better than everything else and we're really impressive."

Nemesis 'Darling Little Angel-Demon' 'Beloved Pet of the New Headmaster' 'Unicorn Among Thestrals' and 'Absolute Delight' Upstead looked away from the window only when they heard someone else take the next seat over.

Ah. Grantham. Nem glanced from her to her desk set-up, as she was working on it, gave an amused half-smile, then turned their attention back to the window until class got underway.

Right away there was that rather open-ended question that Nem didn't really have an opinion on, though they briefly considered bringing up Norse people and those who came earlier, and only partly because of Ancient Runes. Ultimately, though, they kept their hand down and said nothing, because it wasn't really something they could make more than an educated guess on, given the sheer magnitude of world history, and a lack of solid proof one way or the other. In order to give the impression of being engaged, however, Nem made a note on their parchment, a handful of words about Elder Futhark runes, Seers, visions, and purported magic.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine spared some time to tenseley smile first at Fiona, then at Heath when he arrived. Then she was back to looking down at her History of Magic book before her. Her quill was in hand and she was doodling random things. Anything to keep her mind off of The Hoods as well as potential danger her Head of House could be in. The girl was kind of sorry that the lesson was beginning. This meant that her attention would have to be on the room instead of her book.

You know what? With that Hood roaming the room, the fifth year was having a difficult time focusing. Her thoughts became jangled and the anxiety kicked in again. It too a lot for her to focus her gaze intensely on Reccard. Her hand with the quill went up, her grip on the object firm.

“Um. There’s In-India.” Yes, there was a slight stutter because her gaze had wavered to The Prowling Hood. “It was believed that ariel suspension first originated there, which could have simply been a Levitation Charm used.’’ Claudine wasn’t sure when the suspension was first discovered but at least there was something contributed to the lesson.

Camryn was sooooo over those hooded dudes. She was tired of them and she was almost at the point of not being afraid anymore. It was just too exhausting. She just didn’t have time for that anymore. So, she decided to focus her attention on the professor and only the professor.

It was question time and Cam thought about what she wanted to say. At first she was a little confused by the question, but eventually things became clear to her. Raising her hand, she gave her answer. “I think witches and wizards made the pyramids in Egypt. How could they have been made from mud and straw without magic?” She had always wondered about that.

Heath caught Claudine’s tense smile out of the corner of his eye but didn’t dare try to return it. He stared at the pictures on the board in a vain effort to distract himself from his anxiety until Professor Recard’s voice jerked him out of his thoughts. Blink, blink. This lesson didn’t start the way he thought it would, though he wasn’t sure yet if that was a good or a bad sign. Probably the latter, the way this term was going. He considered the question carefully. Well, that was rather vague, wasn’t it? He had no idea how to answer that and for a moment, the thought crossed his mind to keep silent. He was afraid he’d be punished if he said the wrong thing but equally afraid of being punished if he said nothing at all!

Recalling facts about ancient civilizations was a lot harder under the hooded guy’s looming presence, but he tried to block it out and focus on the task at hand. It seemed that blocking everything out was the only way he could function anymore! Eventually he remembered something he’d read about astronomy’s influence in the pyramids of Egypt and cautiously raised his hand. “If I remember correctly, astronomy played a part in The Great Pyramids’ placement,” he said. “The ancient Egyptians used the stars to align the pyramids, and some believe that the pyramids themselves correspond to stars in the constellation Orion. That. plus the complex architecture involved in the pyramids, leads me to believe that wizards had a hand in their creation.”

It was only after he’d spoken that he realized just how long his answer was, and he was shocked. That was the most he’d said in a lesson since the term began. He had no idea where it came from!

Yeah, the creepy hooded figures still unsettled Ivy every time. She probably should've been used to it by now, but she couldn't help tensing up, afraid of what awful thing they might do to someone this time.

She tried to focus on Professor Recard once she started the lesson, and then focused on her fellow students as they offered different answers, trying not to let her eyes wander to the one hooded figure that moved about the room.

A couple students' answers about Egypt finally sparked something that she could offer as an answer of her own. "Yeah, Egypt's a pretty big one, like Cece, Camryn, and Heath said," she said, raising her hand. "It's one of the places that Cursebreakers go to a lot now, because wizards placed a lot of curses on tombs ages ago. And they were really respected back then too...like we should be now." She added the last bit after a quick, nervous glance at the scary hooded guy roaming around. "So they had a really huge influence on just about everything in that society."

Valencia was almost excited about this lesson except for two reasons -- the hooded figure agenda and the fact that she was pretty well versed on the subject and couldn't imagine this lesson being any more than a vague overview.

But... it was her NEWT year and she was going to participate.

"Ancient Mayans." she offered after a hand raise. "Astronomy, arithmancy and divination were core to their beliefs. Those with capabilities had positions of high prominence within society." she said excitedly. Okay. History excited her. It was a problem. But she'd spent every summer for as long as she could remember exploring Mayan ruins so she was very partial to this topic.

Atlas Leonel Flamsteed was wishing he could blend in with his chair. If he trusted his skill in casting he may have tried it out...but so far his career with magic here at Hogwarts was not going so well. Defense Against the Dart Arts was consistently a disaster and it was becoming a problem. A problem that...he couldn't even go talk with his head of house about because...well...obviously. Maybe he could with Auntie June sometime. She was...one of the only adults, people in general, he felt like he could trust here.

With the Hoods™ still in their spot on the other side of the room, the first year felt a small sense of relief. At least they were not breathing down his own neck. He did feel a pang of sympathy for the one Ravenclaw girl...though he was NOT going to look at her. He sure that he had two strikes to his name from the first day of classes alone and NOT keen to find out what happened with the third strike.

Mollywobbles had taught him that.

He had a lot of opinions on this topic, but none of them were the sort he wanted to voice. Not because they were ~controversial~ to the Neo-Alliance's cause, but simply because he did not want to draw ANY attention to himself. Just...blending in with his chair over here. Instead, he was sticking to his parchment and writing down notes based on what his classmates were saying and dividing up his parchment based on continents and then subcategories by region. The three examples the professor had on the board were already pretty telling though. Atlas could really only speak to what he knew and that was mostly Greek and Roman mythologies with a dash of Egyptian. So...that was where his answer would have gone as well.

...if he was speaking.

Right?

The one with the parchment continued taking profuse notes as the woman spoke. Interesting topic. There was a right way and a wrong way to approach it, and for her sake, they hoped she chose the right way. While one of the hooded figures took notes, the other roamed the rows of student desks. Better choose your answers carefully, children!
Gabi might come to regret this, but she couldn't just let Ashley sit there like that, so she waved her wand and undid the spell the hooded figure had done on her, releasing her tongue. "Be sure to think carefully about your answers, Miss Fox," she told her, glancing at her and then back at the hooded figure. She hoped Ashley didn't think she was being too serious about this - she just wanted to spare her further pain.

"Interesting thought! Wizards were certainly influential in Ancient China, and perhaps they did help with the invention of fireworks. However, somewhere along the line muggles definitely learned how to do it WITHOUT magic," she pointed out. Fireworks were one of those many things that appeared without crediting a single person...they just kind of popped up.

Gabi grinned at the Hufflepuff and nodded. "Yes, Merlin and Arthur - one of my personal favorite subjects in history. Definitely influential to Great Britain's history, although the legends have definitely been skewed a bit by muggles...who could obviously not comprehend the raw power Merlin possessed," she added as a quick afterthought, throwing yet another curveball into the lesson to appease the hooded figures.

She felt...gross saying stuff like that. Ugh.

"Yes, lots of scientific and mathematically advancements originated in the Middle East!" she said in agreement to Phoebe's answer with a smile. It was very possible wizards helped speed up that advancement.

"Very good answers, everyone!" Gabi nodded at all the students who had chosen Egypt as their answer. "The pyramids were considered a wonder of the Ancient World - a very complex structure that, as we know, had many magical curses placed upon them, so it's not a stretch at all to assume magic had some part to play in their construction," she explained. As a former cursebreaker herself, she had seen firsthand their majesty.

um.

"Well, the Phoenicians invented the alphabet," Gabi corrected them with a smile. "So that would sort of fall under the category of the Middle East - which, we established was highly influenced by magical societies, so it could very well have been created by us!" she explained. "There is no one definitive creator of the alphabet, though," she added. That was the downside sometimes of history. You couldn't always credit one specific person.

"Interesting take," Gabi nodded at Jean-Luc's answer. A answer that their hooded friends probably LOVED. "Certainly, witches and wizards were eventually seen as a threat because they had TOO much of an impact on wizarding society. A whole series of lectures could be done on events leading up to THAT," she explained with a small smile.

Gabi chuckled a bit in response to that answer and nodded at Dahlia. "Hold on to that thought for a bit longer," she said coyly, as this would be one of the main topics of the lesson that they would touch on shortly.

Just that the sun shone right inside during winter solstice and it was mad accurate. "The sun shines in, like, only during winter solstice."
That should count right? He thought it sounded pretty magical anyway.
"Very interesting take, Mister Miles," Gabi responded to his answer. "Newgrange isn't necessarily what people think of when they think of ancient rock ruins - and since their origin is rather shrouded in mystery, it isn't a jump to suspect it was influenced by magic!"

Ah.

Gabi noticed that Nem was remaining silent, which was a little shocking to Gabi - she'd had a feeling that they would have had a lot of opinions on this subject, but perhaps not?

"Very good Miss Blaze, I like that you pointed out a specific spell that originated there as well," Gabi added with a smile.

Yes, Mayans generally didn't pop up much in European history curriculum but it was fascinating nonetheless.

Shockingly, only TWO people had managed to hit the lesson topic on the head - but she HAD asked for many different answers, so she was still proud of everyone who had answered. "Yes, very good! The Ancient Greeks were very much influenced by witches and wizards, and is actually the topic of today's lesson!"

"Now, the reason we know SO much about wizarding influence in Ancient Greece is because they had such an impact on society as a whole. Of course, written evidence of their influence on other societies - such as in Egypt, the Middle East, Great Britain, and so on - exists, but in Ancient Greek, the witches and wizards lived on not only in written history, but in stories as well!"

"Greek mythology is a very important part of studying ancient Greece. Many Greeks didn't view them as stories, but as actual historical accounts. As we know now, some of the stories had elements of truth to them - but were also fabricated, mostly to protect the magical world," she explained.

"Why did Ancient Greek witches and wizards decide to create myths around their famous members instead of just telling the truth? Are there some legends that stayed relatively true to the source material?" she asked them. Now was the perfect opportunity for them to get into their favorite mythologies and think about how it might have actually been a wizard in disguise!

OOC: On to question two! You will have roughly 30ish hours to answer this one and I'll move on once I get back from work tomorrow. Have fun, and as always nudge me if you need me!
