The Greenhouses of Hogwarts are a collaborative wonder straddling the architecture of the castle and the great outdoors that surround it. Many plants had found permanent residence within, added by various professors over the years especially after the renovations several years back. Recently an additional two greenhouses have been uncovered and repaired, allowing Professor Cole to adjust the space to his own liking to allow for more specialized uses.
OOC: Here's a basic guide of what you might find in each greenhouse; please remember to play realistically based on your character's age and skill level!
Credit for the layout of the Greenhouses go to previous Herbology Professors: BanaBatGirl, kayquilz, Shanners, Samia, and MadAlice…with a couple of tweaks

The crisp, damp air of the Hogwarts grounds had a way of stirring Nyle’s senses, urging him to explore deeper into the forested areas near the edge of the castle while not actually venturing much into them at all - the Forbidden Forest had this eerie draft about it, you see. His fingers, nimble from of handling delicate plants while helping mum in the backyard gardens, had brushed through the undergrowth as he foraged, pausing now and then to examine an interesting leaf, a curious root, or a cluster of mushrooms. His pouch, already brimming with newly discovered specimens, had grown heavier, but he hadn't minded. As the shadows of the afternoon stretched long across the grounds, Nyle made his way toward the greenhouses, the familiar sight of glass panes and curling ivy offering a sense of comfort and reinvigorating his tired knees and palms. Inside Greenhouse 6, the air was thick with the mingling scents of damp soil, moss, and the delicate perfumes of blooming flowers - though he mostly smelled the dirt under his nails, smeared across his palms, and clinging to the knees of his trousers. Nyle inhaled deeply, closing his eyes for a moment as he allowed the atmosphere to envelop him like a warm blanket or his mum's embrace.
His project for the moment was something close to his heart, a research study on crossbreeding certain types of rare herbs that could have potential medicinal applications through the aroma of their blossoms - aroma therapy, sort of. He had been thinking about it for weeks, months even, but today, after the quiet solitude of his walk, felt like the perfect time to begin and perhaps even better that he waited until this term. Nyle spread his findings across the table, carefully placing each plant specimen in front of him, taking note of the smallest details: the texture of the leaves, the veins in the petals, the faint sparkle of dew caught on the edges. He pulled out a small notepad from his pocket, already filled with observations from earlier in the day, and began to sketch, his pencil moving quickly across the page as he sketched each specimen for reference purposes As he worked, his thoughts wandered, lost in the quiet methodical rhythm of the task. He had always found comfort in plants—how their presence seemed to ease the noise of the world. His connection to them, a bond forged over years of quiet observation and many an hour spent simply lying in the lush grass in the backyard, was something he never took for granted. He didn’t need to speak much to feel understood here, in the presence of these plants. With them, he could simply be.
Unlike Iris - who could seemingly simply be wherever she pleased.
A slight smile tugged at his lips as he reached for one of the new specimens he had foraged—the tiny, almost translucent clusters of flowers he had spotted near the edge of the forest almost invisible thanks to the shadow cast by the castle's towers. Its petals shimmered in the soft light of the greenhouse, and as he gently cradled it between his fingers, a fleeting sensation rippled through him—a momentary whisper, like a memory just beyond reach...as if the plant held a memory it couldn’t quite share. Nyle paused, his brow furrowing in concentration. He wasn’t entirely sure what the sensation meant as he returned the flower to his workbench with the rest of his findings. “You are quuuuuuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite a long way from home, aren’t you?” Nyle mused softly to the flower, his voice laced with quiet wonder. His warm cerulean eyes flicked between the delicate, almost crystal-like petals and the pages of his well-worn reference book.

It wasn't quite like Valerie to wander on her own. She preferred doing things in the company of her friends. But the truth was, she didn't really have friends here yet. So, on her own she wandered, even though her shoes were getting dreadfully dirty in this weather and her bangs were sticking to her forehead.
Something that intrigued her was the fact that there were plants that were magical! Who knew?! She'd never come across a magical plant on her own, in the London parks, or in the countryside on holidays. And she sure loved flowers!
Therefore, her curiosity brought her here. On her own. To the greenhouses. She chose greenhouse six to explore first at random.
"Oh!" she exclaimed seeing that the greenhouse was...fairly lacking in plants but also occupied by a stranger. "Er...sorry!" But the flower he had caught her eye, stopping her from leaving him in peace. "Err..." she blinked.

Nyle looked up from his pocket guide, his blue eyes lighting up with mild surprise but quickly softening into a warm, welcoming gaze. He smiled, recognizing the hesitation in the girl's expression and finding it all to relatable. It was probably how he looked at at least two-thirds of the Hogwarts population.
“Oh, hey, no need to apologize!” Nyle chirped. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
He glanced down at the flower in his hands and then back up at her, his fingers lightly tracing the petals while he debated something. A couple somethings but one of those somethings was whether or not to share without prompt. After a brief moment of internal debate, he rashly decided that if she’d wandered into this greenhouse, there was a good chance she had some interest in Herbology herself. Maybe she even had a personal project she was working on - at least, that’s what his hopeful, slightly nervous heart wanted to believe.
“This one? It’s a fascinating plant. It’s known for its... translucent blossoms when wet. It's called a Diphylleia Skeleton Flower and I was just looking it up in my book because it is quite curious that I found it around the outskirts of the forest considering it is not native to this area at all," he explained, eyes darting around a bit so as not to linger on her face for too long. "...but it’s also part of a study I’m doing on the potential for medicinal uses in aromatherapy. Some flowers have a sort of, well, a healing aroma, you know? I’m looking into how certain herbs could work together to create something poignant." He paused, giving her a look as if to gauge whether she was following or if she found it interesting or if she was looking at him like he was a runspoor with ten heads. He couldn't really tell which - he wasn't particularly good at reading people with his eyes. “It’s kind of a mix of magic and nature...and...um...I'm sorry...I'm rambling...” he laughed while rubbing the back of his neck and twisting his fingers into his blond hair at the base of it.
He shifted a bit, motioning to the plant life around them. “I come here often, working on projects like this. If you’re into plants, feel free to hang out. The, uh, more the merrier!” His gaze softened again and he actually managed to still his gaze on her as he continued. "You’re new here, right? I'm Nyle. A Hufflepuff second year." And then he made up his mind about the other thing he had been debating and gingerly pulled one of the flowers off from the cluster to hold it out to her to take. "What’s your name?"

She pinked at his acknowledgement and spread a smile onto her face.
...Ten-headed runespoor, indeed. But she tried to take in as much of what he said as she could. "A study?" Wasn't he...young? Weren't "studies" for like...grown ups? And doctors? Grown up doctors?
Valerie began inching closer to the boy, her skirt swaying with her steps. "Where are they native to?" she asked.
She pinked again because he obviously could tell she was new, while everyone was new to her. "Valerie," she bowed her head slightly, once beside him. "Ravenclaw..." That's what it was called, right? She was almost certain her professors had awarded points to "Ravenclaw" in her classes.

Nyle’s eyes widened slightly when Valerie didn’t immediately take the flower, a faint, sheepish flush creeping onto his cheeks. He held the flower a little more awkwardly, his fingers curling around the delicate stem, and then he pulled it back just a fraction. Maybe it was too forward or maybe she just wasn’t interested in flowers like that. He quickly decided he didn’t want to make things uncomfortable, though, so he made an effort to relax his posture, giving her a small, nervous chuckle.
“Oh, um, well...they’re native to East Asia - mostly in places like Japan, China, and parts of Korea,” Nyle began, his voice quickly picking up speed again as he fell back into his familiar, comfortable rhythm. “They grow in the cooler, more mountainous regions. It’s actually really rare to find them outside their native habitat, which is why I was so surprised to spot one near the Forbidden Forest. You’d think the climate would be too... warm, right? Which is also kind of funny to say because, well, we're in Scotland and it's not exactly a tropical climate.” He tilted his head slightly, eyes lighting up as he spoke. "I’m still trying to figure out how it ended up there. Could be a bit of magical influence at work, or maybe a centaur brought it over for Divination purposes. It’s all very mysterious."
He hesitated for a moment, his thumb brushing against the petal of the flower he was still holding, and then he offered her a shy smile. "Sorry. I tend to get a little carried away with the details. It’s just... it’s so exciting to find plants that aren’t supposed to be here, you know? Makes me feel like a bit of an explorer.” He scratched the back of his neck again, eyes flicking down to the flower and then back to her. “But, uh... if you’re not into flowers, that’s totally okay too!” And just in case, he kept the flower poised in his hand, offering it again - this time more gently, with a quiet “I totally understand if you don’t want it, though.”
He glanced up at her and gave a soft chuckle, trying to ease the tension that he perceived had crept in because of his rambling. “Valerie, that's a really pretty name.” His cheeks brightened once again as he thought about the beautiful white rose that worked at Noltie's who shared the same name. "Oh, in that case, congratulations on being sorted into Ravenclaw!" And he meant that, even if the name sent a tiny little bitter shiver up and down his spine. "That’s really great. I hear the common room is incredibly beautiful and with the best view of the grounds. My twin, Iris, is in Ravenclaw too."
