| | Yates doesn’t want to overdo special effects
A recent article cited several directors explaining what moves them to cut scenes from their films in order to present audiences with a reasonable running time. Order of the Phoenix director David Yates was among them and commented how audiences can be overwhelmed by multiple action scenes or too many special effects. Quote:
Sometimes they overstay their welcome just by that little, tiny percent. There's a sweet spot for running length where the audience comes out feeling elated, feeling they actually want more. Reaching that sweet spot takes a lot of discipline.
You just have to let things go, sometimes. It's amazing how you think you could never live without a scene or a moment, yet frankly, the movie's better off without it.

| Ultimate Potterite Original original I think that special effects are very helpful with the overall "magical" way of things in the HP world, but I'm not sure.... I did love LotR, and that had LOADS of special effects... It depends, I wouldn't mind more special effects really... |

I am glad. Perhaps with less special effects they will focus more on the emotion of the storyline. Although I shouldn't get too hopeful.

I know! Cuz like imagine there is NO special effects or just like two it would be boring. If there were too many everyone will think it was overdone and it wouldn't be as real. So I guess it is hard to reach the perfect spot. Hopefully Hp and the OoTP will be in the perfect spot! thnx for posting this.

I agree, Too much effect cannot see the realism of the film.

You can't leave all the stuff out. It ruins the books. Ruins everything. One word: Exactly. =) |

Good on him. I do think you guys are being too hard on Yates and Goldenberg, because ultimately, they decide what will stay in the movie and what should be left out. Yes, there are many plot moments that are crucial to OOTP, but for heaven's sake, not every little thing that us fans like should be in the movie (I think the Quibbler subplot involving Rita was rightly cut from the film, because I'm sure they can explain it through someone else).
I thought OOTP had a lot of filler and focused mainly on Harry's emotional turmoil. It had a great story, but I thought it could've done with a bit of editing and be more streamlined and fast-paced. I think we'll get a good version of OOTP that's around the same length of the previous four movies. Not to mention that the trailer and the behind-the-scenes stuff show that all my favorite scenes from the book (Harry's detentions, Occulmency/Snape's Worst Memory, the twins flying away from Hogwarts, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, the Harry/Cho kiss, the climax of the book, etc.) are being kept in the film.
The one thing I worry about OOTP is the pacing, I hope it'll flow naturally and not feel compressed and rushed like GOF was, even with numerous cuts from the book.
