| | Why J.K.Rowling shouldn't write another sequel
Magnus Linklater, for The Times, has written a piece focusing on why authors, such as J.K.Rowling, have to say goodbye to their characters and resist the urge to appease fans by writing further novels about them. Quote:
There is nothing to match the tyranny of a long-running hero — except perhaps for the tyranny of the insatiable reader. There comes a time when, like the guests who have overstayed their welcome, principal characters have to be asked to leave.
Quote:
Such is the popular appetite for fictional heroes that they can acquire a longevity and an instinct for survival that often takes their author by surprise. The reality they convey may be stronger, and certainly more attractive, than the monochrome version which, for many readers, passes for ordinary life.
Quote:
So when, eventually, [...] Harry Potter confronts his final fate, we should not be surprised if there is widespread mourning across the land, and a clamour for him to return. Enormous pressure will be put on the author for just one more sequel, for the mystery of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft. She must resist it. A character who returns is never quite the same as the one who left. A clean break is better for all concerned.

Sad but true.
As much as I'd like to find out more about the past and future of the characters, I think 7 is enough, by all means. |

I agree, and I need a closure. As much as I love Harry Potter and wish for it to continue, she's always said she'd write seven books only, and I accepted that long ago. However, it doesn't mean that I won't be sad.

i would be crying for joy and pain after the seventh book, because the book suspense would be really killing, and when you lay your hands on that book it's like WHOA! but after it's finished, you'll be really really sad(like me) and i hope that maybe j.k. could write some "romance stories" like if harry lives, will he marry or not, the fate of them(in detail of course, not some really short story..) and a book about the marauders. the famous marauders, which ALOT ALOT ALOT of us love, and how maybe sirius had really loved a girl which disappeared or something... and what REALLY happened to james and lily, before they die, their bickers and everything with detailed form, i guess every fan would really appreciate and love j.k. rowling more than ever, but it's gotta end somehow... (but i still hope she'll write about the marauders with their lives at hogwarts!!)

Hogwarts RPG Name: Nemia Havishaw | I unfortunately know this to be true, but still I will always want more than 7 books. I would for Jo to write another series of books though with new characters I would be very interrested in that. |

Well, personally, I think that Harry Potter books could go on for ages and I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I guess it just depends on society. Will they be willing to accept Harry Potter books/ movies after say....10 years? I don't know.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle hated writing Sherlock Holms and tried to finish him off by having him role off a cliff with Professor Moriarty. The fans clambered and he was brought back, but as some observed, “The fall off the cliff may not have killed him, but he was never quite the same man again.”
L. Frank Baum tried to stop writing the wizard of Oz series to the point of Glenda Good Witch putting a force field about the kingdom, but a little girl in Okalahoma wrote that radio should be able to penetrate it. It wasn’t all that good to begin with so I can’t say it got worse.
Piers Anthony was going to stop the Xanth series after only three books but it was only around 5th he really hit his stride. What made this work was slowly bringing new characters and letting the old ones drift away. After the movie (err, cinema) of Deadly Hallows is realized Warner Brothers will start on the T.V. (err, telly) series. It will work if it has none of the characters of the cinemas except for perhaps a few ghosts.

I think that the right thing to do is finish the seventh Harry Potter book and not go on unless Rowling wants to and not because we pressured her to. As much as I hate it

Hogwarts RPG Name: Elizabeth | Mrs. Tony Stark .... I understand what Linklater is talking about. Because it's the last book, it's going to tie up loose storylines and put everything to an end. To resurface the characters and plot after book 7 would just be awkward and kind of unnecessary. That's why there's fanfiction!!

All good things must come to an end. Any other books would just be a cheap spin off.
