| | Why J.K.Rowling shouldn't write another sequel
Magnus Linklater, for The Times, has written a piece focusing on why authors, such as J.K.Rowling, have to say goodbye to their characters and resist the urge to appease fans by writing further novels about them. Quote:
There is nothing to match the tyranny of a long-running hero — except perhaps for the tyranny of the insatiable reader. There comes a time when, like the guests who have overstayed their welcome, principal characters have to be asked to leave.
Quote:
Such is the popular appetite for fictional heroes that they can acquire a longevity and an instinct for survival that often takes their author by surprise. The reality they convey may be stronger, and certainly more attractive, than the monochrome version which, for many readers, passes for ordinary life.
Quote:
So when, eventually, [...] Harry Potter confronts his final fate, we should not be surprised if there is widespread mourning across the land, and a clamour for him to return. Enormous pressure will be put on the author for just one more sequel, for the mystery of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft. She must resist it. A character who returns is never quite the same as the one who left. A clean break is better for all concerned.

There's no doubt that there will be widespread mourning and a yearning for him to return, but that's not the point. I need finality, and JKR said that this would be the final book. I have no doubt that she will be able to stick to her word, though I do hope that she writes more books in the future about things other than HP. |

The hardest thing ever was to say goodbye to a game we had. A good 20 players mourned the loss of our story that we shared with them every week for two years. But as my partner in cri- er, storytelling said, the story is coming to an end, and some players never even get to see an ending. The fact that they did so, and that we were able to give them an ending at all was a blessed event. And to carry on after the story had ended would only to drag our noble stallion down to its knees and cripple him.
Rowling has not only carried on, better than many authors, but she has also given us an ending. We will soon know how this segment of Harry's life ends, and we will be able to dream of a better future without death and torment. Harry Potter will end, but will at least live on as a prize-worthy, noble stallion indeed.

duh that everyone around the world who loves HP and the books will be sad to see it end. But J.K must beable to go on with her life. she may leave harry and his friends....but another story will come and take its place in our hearts. I just hope that Harry and the gang will live again and J.K may write another book... here is to hope!

Harry Potter will continue living, it just won't be any more books. I agree with her about this being the last one and I am glad that she is staying by her word!

Rubbish!!!! Just plain Rubbish! Many authors have written far more books about their characters than JK has and they continue to do it, much to the delight of their fans. For example Laurell Hamilton and her Anita Blake Vampire Executioner Series. Truly fantastic. (thirteen and counting) I am thrilled each and every time there is a new one out, as is I am sure all of the fans of the series. There are many ways and avenues that she could use to keep us all in Hogsmeade if she so chooses and I for one will be there to support her and her writing. I would love to read about Harry and company well until they are old and Harry finally becomes Minister for Magic. THink about this are you really sick of our heroes never to be heard from again?
Outraged at the thought.
PS: I have come to terms with her decision, that doesn't mean that I have to like it do I am not deluded. Just hopeful

Sadly i agree. At first i wanted a sequel so badly but now the more i think about it, it's for the best if there isn't one. It's just sad that it's all ending so fast.... |

PS: I have come to terms with her decision, that doesn't mean that I have to like it do I am not deluded. Just hopeful This is true, but you'll notice that Incubus Dreams had very little plot, and was mostly rubbish. The more she's being pushed to publish the next big hit, the worse it has a chance to get. And we read it because it's a series, not just a story. The Anita Blake series is ongoing, and we have no hope for an end any time soon. But that's because there is no true end, other than the death of Anita (with Richard, Jean-Claude, Nathanial, and Damian going with her). And that's what she may have to resort to if she ever decides to end the series. Not to mention, like any series that counts on "level ups" or increases in power and interest, you can only go so far before you're fighting the gods. Whatever ending Hamilton gives us, would we really be satisfied?
Whereas Harry Potter is a story. Sure, it's kinda a miniseries since it has seven books, but it has only one main plot, one main bad guy through the entire thing: Voldemort. A true continuation of it to become a series says that it would be an unending battle with Voldemort, or perhaps his followers. You end up with a Buffy complex. After the final battle with Voldemort, then what? The death eaters? Would that really be as satisfying as all he's been through so far? Would another dark wizard have to arise before we can get our action fix? It's not about forgetting our heroes or becoming sick of them, it's about allowing a story to end with a proper ending, a satisfactory ending. It's about leaving us with a set of heroes that we can continue to dream on about. With a satisfaction that the bad guy is gone for good. This is closure. Something that many people who enjoy series rarely get.
I'm looking forward to the next Anita Blake book too, by the way. But I don't look forward to looking forward to the next one for the rest of my life.
