Post Why Harry Potter had to remain British

In a new interview with The Telegram David Heyman talks about discovering the Potter books and how and why he fought to retain the Britishness of the stories when they transfered to screen.

Quote:
“Hollywood is risk-adverse and what makes them feel secure is to have an American in the lead,” Heyman says. He’s prepared to forgive industry colleagues for proposing an Americanized Harry Potter. “This was before Harry Potter was the big phenomenon that he became, so they were entitled to that view. But for me, it would have destroyed the stories.

“For me, one of the things I responded to in these books is their Englishness. The story is very English. It has cultural specificity, but it has thematic and emotional universality.”

“We’ve all been through having our first crush, having our first kiss, suffering from confusion and social isolation, being embraced by friends and ostracized by them, having teachers you like and ones you don’t like — all these are moments that have been experienced by British kids and also by North American kids and people the world over.”

I'm glad they decided to keep it british...it wouldn't have been the same if it had been americanized.

As much as I would have wanted 2 be in a potter movie, an american styled potter would REALLY suck. All you would see is these same child actors really destroying the film. I have 2 give them there props

Yeah, I'd heard of the "Americanized" one, where it was supposed to be like Beverly Hills 90210... Thank goodness for the Britishness <3

I agree! Harry Potter is British. It needed to be British actors/actresses. It would've been weird if it weren't.

You get too many American High School stories that are just awful. Besides...

If you did Harry Potter with American children - It wouldn't be Harry Potter.

It's English. (Or British considering J.K.R is from Scotland...)

What? Harry Potter was huge before the movie came out! Just because some ppl are movie fans and not real fans doesnt mean that it wasnt huge before the movie. ugh. Its like LOTR. When ppl became fans after seeing the movie, but they never read the book and dont plan to.

Well, I wouldn't really mind if anyone from any other language speaking country or America or God knows where had a part in the films as long as they kept a British accent. Still, I am glad they tried to keep the films as British as possible ^^

I would've followed whatever Jo wanted. If Jo wanted a three-headed toadstool to play Harry then it's a three-headed toadstool it is.

Film Addict! | ♥ Suraj Sharma ♥| TIGRESS!

I live in America. Now here's what I think: American Harry Potter. HOW can anyone imagine an "American Harry Potter"? It's just another way for us Americans to say "Omg! We made that film!!" and continue bragging to the world about how we made such a "brilliant film". Here's the thing: If it was made in the Americans perspective...the series would already have been dead and no one would really like it as much as they do now. J.K. Rowling wrote the books. What did she do? She made the setting in Britain. She made the language of the dialogue and the narration in British-English. The last thing she did was make each character look at the world through English/British eyes. Her point was that the entire series British rather than American. And I have to agree with lyra-eve. People never read the books!! That's why several movie-makers think it's okay to make Harry Potter American. They just don't read the books which were pretty big even before the movies came out.
