Post Teaching assistant quits job over Potter

Sariya Allen, a teaching assistant at Durand primary school, is seeking compensation for religious discrimination after having been disciplined for refusing to hear a child read a Harry Potter book.

Quote:
Ms Allen refused to listen to her reading it because God had stated in the Bible that witchcraft was "an abomination". "The girl went home and told her mum. I also had told the teacher that I objected to hearing that book read because of my faith," Ms Allen said.
She claims that the first assistant headteacher, Mark McLaughlin, referred to her as "obstructive" and "rubbished" her faith.

Quote:
"He was saying it's just my interpretation of the Bible and my view. He said 'these are your views and you're a minority because of these'. He thought I was quite extreme because I'm a born-again Christian. I'm a committed Christian," she said.

Thats ridiculous. A teacher shouldn't impose their religious views on a student. They can have whatever views they want, but when they allow those views to get in the way of their job, they should be disciplined.

EDIT: First post WOOOOOT!

That's preposterous! She isn't a 'minority' simply because she's a Christian! Being one myself, I'm offended at the school's actions! Granted, it's just a story, and should be treated as fiction. The teacher was over reacting!

The teacher should not have seen it as listening to blaspheme, but helping a child learn to read!

She wasn't referred to as a minority because of her faith, but because of her view on the HP novels. The majority of Christians don't have a problem with the book series. I think that's more what he meant.

for goodness sake kids can make their own choices - they shouldn't have religion FORCED on them because of that teacher. Sheesh...
And it's just a story, look beyond the witchcraft and it teaches you about morals and values and such, since the characters are teenagers.
This woman is clearly over-reacting. If she doesn't want to read/hear the books, fine, her choice, but she shouldn't be forcing others to do the same.

EDIT:

That's true.
Minority don't (which is why the guy said minority).
My friend in the States is in one of the most Christian families (her dad is a pastor and her mom used to assist in teaching preschoolers at a Christian school), yet she was allowed to read the books. Of course she stopped at book 4 but she was allowed to read them because her parents didn't overreact to the witchcraft stuff.
My other friend, whose family is Christian but they don't go to church every week, Sunday school, don't seem as Christian really, her mom refuses to let her read the books.

Weird how things work, eh?

Oh people these days will do anything to be noticed. Obviously the woman sees the type of attention others are getting by trying to disface the name of Harry Potter she is also hoping for her 15 mintues of fame.

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs but no one has the right to force their beliefs upon others! This teacher assisitant should realize the scope of her job could lead to what she might feel is a compromisation of her beliefs...is the job worth this? If not, do not go into this profession! As a born-again-Christian....teaching that involves reading of various materials, such as the fictional Harry Potter or the very scientific Theory of Evolution the at many born agains refuse to accept....well, you get my point. Maybe she would be better off teaching in a Christian school rather than a public or non-Christian school!

Ummm, can you say FICTION!!! Plus, I haven’t seen one thing in Harry Potter that says not to believe in God or to start worshiping witchcraft. Poor kid who just wanted to read.

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and, if the teacher believed the books to be against hers, she was right not to hear the child's reading. However, she shouldn't be teaching in a school where Harry Potter books are read in the first place, if her beliefs tells her to avoid them.

But, wait, she would probably not get a job anywhere, were that to happen. Oops.

Emma's right. As a practicing Christian myself, I have no problem with HP. I won't go into doctrine or anything, but I don't see anything in the Bible which would prohibit me, as a Christian, from reading HP. She's giving us Christians a bad name. :arg:

It's only FICTION,for pete's sake!It she didn't want to hear it being read, she should never have joined a place where Harry Potter is read.I mean, she's a teacher. Why could she not have objected to it when it was decided that the kids would read Harry Potter in class??And she could hav called another teacher so that the child could do her reading!

Actually, though, the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe is allegedly an allegory of the Christ story, and C.S. Lewis was a noted born-again Christian, writing books such as "Mere Christianity" when he converted (which allegedly was influenced by his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien, interestingly enough.)

More information:
C. S. Lewis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, since so much of HP is also borrowed from Christianity (Severus, St. Peter and Leucius are the names of the Confessors, for instance), I'm surprised that it inspires such concern from Christian right wing groups... but I know it makes a LOT of Christians uncomfortable because of the pagan/witchcraft elements.

Even still-- I would think the teacher could have just got someone else to help the child, if she objected... not quit.

And it goes on and on .
This is just stupid, I know everyone has their own opinions, and I respect that, but really now, either everyone Hates HP, or everyone Loves HP, no one is in between it seems. Geeze. I'm christian, most of my relatives are too, and all my cousins like HP! its fictional in the first place! Common people! and if you actually look past the magic and what not, its just like real life. oh well I'm sure even after DH this will still be going on... probably for years, its an on going thing

witchcraft? *pffffffffffffffffftttttttttt* Harry Potter is fiction, not practicing witchcraft! It's not like the magic in Macbeth, evil witches predicting death and stuff...

This is starting to become rediculaus why can't people just leave Harry potter alone. It all started with Laura Mallory just because she doesn't like Harry Potter .
