Rupert's dad comments on the 'autograph ban'

A few days ago The Sun ran an 'article' claiming Rupert Grint's school had banned pupils from asking for his autograph. Rupert's father has now spoken out about these claims calling them 'bizarre'. His agent and old headteacher have also commented.

Quote:

A bemused Nigel Grint, father of the star, told the Mercury:

"It's all a bit of a mystery — I don't know where it's come from. He left the school last summer after completing his GCSEs, and even when he was there, there were never any strict stipulations about that [signing autographs]. It's a bit bizarre."
Quote:

Rupert's agent, Chris Harris, said:

"It always amazes us when we get these stories, but it's the timing of this one that's really strange. We weren't contacted by The Sun. I can only assume they were rummaging around for stories and found this one in their files. It's not true anyway - he spent very little time at the school because he was filming so often. So there was never a ban."

He said Rupert was "slightly surprised" by the story.
Quote:

Richard Hale headteacher Steve Neate said: "Rupert had an untroubled time here because the boys respected his privacy. The headteacher at the time, Dumbledore [Mike] James, made an informal request to the boys in assembly ahead of Rupert coming back from filming just to give him space and treat him normally.

"There were no written rules about it and there wasn't any case of detentions being given because the boys showed good sense. Once Rupert was in school, he blended in. When I came to the school it was hard to pick him out because he didn't have a big following at break or lunchtimes.

"We do follow his progress, but we were amazed to see our name in the press again. There were a few wry smiles here about how out of date their story was."

That is interesting to hear. I figured it was not true. Oh well, just nice to hear anything on Rupert!

Aimz 09-23-2005 09:50 PM

Who thinks up stupid stories like that!!! whoever it is needs a new job!

Freak stories! People just want atention, so they create this...
Poor Rupert

Leeness 09-23-2005 09:53 PM

Some things the Sun come up with are completely wierd. You deffers should have an imagination before applying for that place

cocogodessmegrly1 09-23-2005 09:53 PM

Never heard these rumors before.. but that seems interesting!

EmmaRiddle 09-23-2005 09:55 PM

I loved reading this. I was grinning the entire time. The Sun newspaper deserve to be ridiculed. They are quite possibly the worst newspaper ever. And this, along with countless other articles, proves it. Hang them out to dry, guys. You don't mess with the HP fandom ;)

Mrs Felton 09-23-2005 09:55 PM

What's the point of making up a stupid story like that??

[room.of.requirement] 09-23-2005 09:58 PM

I think the timing on that is crazy.. The Sun should've at least made sure that Rupert was still in school.. LoL..

Lissydove 09-23-2005 10:01 PM

Amen Emma! Don't mess with HP fandom is right! I can't believe, or maybe I should, that the Sun printed such nonsense. I'm glad the truth is out!

[the.time.turner] 09-23-2005 10:34 PM

It's amazing how the media likes to make stuff up just to get people to buy it or even read it. Poor Rupert.

Tao 09-23-2005 10:48 PM

It really is all quite hilarious. And it was fun reading some facts... about how his schoolmates didn't pester him and act like he was the best thing since sliced bread. And that Rupert never acted like that. Really rather cute. :)

HPfan365 09-23-2005 10:54 PM

I wasn't sure if that story was true when I read it but now I know that it wasn't. I can't believe they would post lies about that just to get a story.

Hermione J. Potter 09-23-2005 10:55 PM

Yeah youre right Emma. But the Sun is better than the WORST magzine ever printed which is The Enqiuier... cos it keep on saying women are giving birth to aliens...... Anyway they both are the worst magzines printed in World History.... i think.....

LOL I'd have to see what The Sun looks like, but probably. We have a few tabloids like that. The Sun here though does report on the news, but it's fastly becoming less than the brilliant newspaper it once was. Although I'm not sure everyone has The Sun. We have 'The Baltimore Sun'.

kellann227 09-24-2005 12:11 AM

um...interesting :)

WickedSchmuck 09-24-2005 12:19 AM

When I first read it I laughed and laughed! They are complete morons.

You know what? I don't get why all the news sites picked it up - and now you think they'll posted this story? I doubt it. They'd rather focus on the negative, fluffy garbage than the honest truth. >:/ So sick of it - sick of the dozens of sites that have posted this idiotic nonsense.

Wonderstruck 09-24-2005 01:26 AM

Well it is rather strange, but I can see their point. I mean it could be rather annoying to have like all these people swarming around you to get your autograph. But still to ban it I think is really funny. I'm guessing they could see it as a disruption to the learning in the classroom.

prettyinpink 09-24-2005 01:31 AM

Whoot! By what I've seen on this site, I'd have to agree with that statement. And you don't seem to like the Sun too much, do you? But I never thought the whole autograph thing was real in the first place...

Yea that sounds like The Sun alright! The paper is likie on of the best selling but why they have to print these stupid, untrue, twisted stories is beyond me!

Yea didnt that come up when it was posted here before! I thought about it and they were like a whole year off  Haha How could that happen! Umm....Well they prob didnt do they're research enough!

I thought it was funny how Rupert was "Slightly amused!" Haha. I would be! Its crazy! But then again so is The Sun!

dan_4_elle 09-24-2005 09:14 AM

trust the Sun to write something like that

Raazia 09-24-2005 10:19 AM

trust media to spread false stories *rolls eyes*
It's amazing how other kids respected Rupert's privacy...amazing disclipine.....

mysterious 09-24-2005 11:11 AM

they do this just to sell because they know that the hp fans will buy things with news about hp in them. and this is the proof that they'd been lying. i really don't like it when people fool others just for their own sake.

loony 4 ........ 09-24-2005 11:42 AM

I always enjoy reading stuff like this. I think the Sun was only trying to make itself popular. Glad to know that Rupert acts like any other student in school :)

They should. We knew all along it wasn't true; the reason for posting it was, in my case, to make sure fans knew it was rubbish. These type of publications are sometimes read by gullible fans and it isn't right that they make them believe false things about the people they look up to.

But that never happened.

As a journalism undergraduate, no. It sickens me to think these people call themselves journalists. I have to spend £10,000 studying to become one and it just makes me lose faith in the whole industry when you see things like this being printed. It's atrocious.

My dad and I are having an argument about journalism and the media, and what they do for society. He insists that "while they are important, they're not as important as scientists and engineers." I'm extremely mad, because I, like you, have plans in the journalism field. And of course, the only reason he's saying this is because we're surrounded by tabloids like the Sun the totally ruin the name of journalism.

I've never seen that in the that magazine........That sounds more like something out of The Weekly World News. I love the headlines of that magazine because they show creativity and imagination, and gives me something to laugh about at work.

I hate tabloids that deal with celebrities because, though people think they have imaginations and off the wall, like with Rupert, they still do the same thing. The ony difference between the Sun and the other ones is the Sun has the worst timing, which made it even more obvious.

I suppose it comes down to what you believe. Not all journalists are Rita Sketter wannabes. Sir Trevor McDonald for one. There are many credible newspapers, broadsheets and magazines out there. It's just that the majority buy into the tabloids and therefore fund poor journalism. People complain about it but in a sense by buying it all they're just as bad and are encouraging it to grow.

Stormdancer 09-24-2005 02:31 PM

Amen Emma.! To all of your speeches, especially the one on page 1 that Liss agreed with.

Sir Trevor is a brilliant news-reporter.

MiracleManHP17 09-24-2005 03:03 PM

Exactly what I was thinking, Grace.. agree with you completely.

I hope that all the HP sites, at least, that posted the silly article would also post this article-reply from Mr. Nigel Grint and the school's authorities -- debunk this rumor!!!

OtterySt.Catchpole 09-24-2005 06:57 PM

Credibility? Who needs credibility...this is the news we're trying to report

For shame Kaz...really. Just in case you're reading this... :erm:

But anyways, if the Sun is such a rubbish magazine, and all of Rupert's fans know this is bunk, then why even bother acknowledging the magazine? You know what they should do? Get together with all the other stars that the magazine routinely libels and file a class action lawsuit to bury them under bankruptcy.

Or you could just ignore them...ditto for you Ems.

Okay, I have heard of slow news days, but isn't this just a little ridiculous? I mean, lets pretend that we have all slipped into an alternate reality and it was true... It still isn't news. It would be news on an HP site, but not anywhere else. The fact that it isn't true just makes it worse. Some people's children....

ElektraPotter 09-25-2005 07:35 PM

so the whole thing was a fake, there wasn't a ban on autograhps?

EmmaRiddle 09-25-2005 07:59 PM

Yeah, that is a bit strange, but the press is always making up stories about celebs because they run out of real stories to tell, it mustve been pretty weird for Rupert though... why would the press be writing about his business at school? nosyy ppl! :P

foreverxlonely48 10-08-2005 03:49 PM

i think it's so cool that the people at rupert's school respect his privacy. it's a lot more than what i can say in my school. i'm pretty sure there are some people at his school that ask him sometimes, but that's pretty cool that they can be so understanding about his fame.
