| | Rupert Grint & Richard Griffiths comment on Harry Potter films' Academy Awards snubs
Actors Rupert Grint and Richard Griffiths, who attended the South Bank Sky Arts Awards this past Wednesday, commented to the Evening Standard on why the Harry Potter films failed to receive a great deal of recognition at the Academy Awards. The films have been nominated nine times since the release of Sorcerer's Stone in 2001, but have not won a single Oscar. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I was recently nominated for two technical awards: best art direction, and achievement in visual effects. Quote:
When asked why the franchise had not received major nominations again, Grint said: "We don't expect it."
"Either way, the final movie will be huge. We did some re-shoots at the end of the year. We're really going to go out with a bang. That's everyone's goal really. It's going to be pretty epic."
"It would be great to see the technical [team receive] recognition. They devote their whole lives to it."
Quote:
Griffiths, 63, said: "It's sad it's only technical awards and not artistic ones. It's the biggest movie phenomenon on the planet. I remember when ET was the highest earning movie of all time - $870 million. With Harry Potter, you're talking $6 billion.
"Guys? Something's going on! Why don't you honour it?"
The 83rd annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 8pm EST/5pm PST. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I has now been released worldwide; Deathly Hallows: Part II will be out July 15, 2011. Click on the banner below to order tickets for the film at Fandango. Tickets are also on sale now in the UK; head over to the Harry Potter official UK Facebook for more information. |

Rupert has a point and as does Ronaldx.
Just because it wasn't nominated for a million things doesn't mean it's not an awesome movie!

I, also, agree with Rupert. The movie is just too awesome...it doesn't need an Academy Award.

I think they both make valid points. I don't think the kids or really any of the cast probably expect awards ... but as far as the visuals go it would be nice if they got recognition because the movies always look INCREDIBLE!
As far as not recognizing them it is a friggen HUGE deal and makes a crap load of money... why not throw some love there way? Oh well no one watches the AA anyways

that's such rubbish. I can't believe they haven't won any Oscars. In the end it doesn't really matter tho, because all the world knows how great the movies are and how much hard work as been put into it!

Oh wow! I totally agree with Rupert and Richard! I mean, surely they should have received an Oscar before now. And their acting in DH I was great! Ah well! The fact that they're nominated for two Oscars is still a huge achievement! And both Rupert and Richard look great at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards! Especially Rupert!

HP is awesome, really awesome- but once films like this started reciveing big artistic/acting awards in ceremonies such as the Oscars- films like Twilight would be on the way to doing so too (they're good and all just not that good) and they just don't deserve them in terms of artistic ability. I can understand why these big award committees will be reluctant to give artistic awards to actors in these sort of franchises. :/ even though I do wish they'd get more recognition to be honest.

Rupert and Richard both make good points, but you know what award or no award, I'd trade those other actors for our Harry Potter ones any day. Our Harry Potter actors got heart and soul, something the academy always igonores (and talent of course), but oh well I don't work for the academy so I can't be the one to talk.. <3 Potter always x

Hogwarts RPG Name: Debbie Weasley First Year | The Academy Awards have proved time and time again, that a movies popularity counts for nothing. Which is really sad. Look at The Dark Knight just a few years ago. It got nothing, when that movie was the highest grossing film of the year. HP-HBP was pushed back on its release date because Warner Bros. didn't need the extra money. That movie filled there entire quota!
Getting back to the point, it doesn't matter what the people like at these type of awards. But Rupert is right, the franchise is completely humble to its fans, and the recognition they've gotten is a award in of itself. |

The Academy Awards are about behind-the-scenes movie politics. They do not always give the awards to the biggest movies. Plus, I believe the AAs holds some prejudice towards fantasy films in general. They took forever to acknowledge Lord of the Rings. Maybe that's what they are doing for HP, specifically DH - Part 2.

Yeah, HP doesn't need an Oscar to show its worth...even though I watch the Oscars anyway (just for the pure entertainment the hosts provide ).

It would be nice if it could win at least one Oscar, but I won't be disappointed if it doesn't. The quality of a movie isn't expressed in the number of Oscar's it wins Moreover I think that Oscar's are given to moveis which need to be promoted in some way. The HP series clearly doesn't belong in that categoty |

I guess they figure there's way too much of an ensemble feel to single out one person for acting honors.

Maybe they will pull a "Lord of the Rings" on them. They really didn't honor the first two "LotR" movies much but then the last one received best picture. Unfortunately, I don't think they would go that far but maybe they will get cinematography at least. Maybe best score??

Well, Being nominated (which Harry Potter did 7 times since philosoher stone) is a very good recognition, and that's the same thing for every movie. Winning is nothing once you've been nominated.
But, I do agree with the Academy on the movies they chose every year, because most of the time, they are right: the movies nominated for most of the great awards are pretty good, sometimes the best ones of the year.
But I also algree to say that the Academy have some prejudice toward the fantasy movies, and the Lord of the Rings was EXCEPTIONAL, Even if I think Harry Potter movies should get recognition, I don't expect one, because the movies are a lot more teenage-like than the Lord of the Ring was. And the Academy generally don't like these movies either. So, a fantasy teenage-like franchise who won 6 billion in the box office is a bit too popular for the Academy, I guess.
I'm repeating myself, but I still pray to see the last movie in at least 3 or 4-5 nominations sections: production, Art Direction, Special effects and, make-up and one actor's category (Alan Rickman for example).
