| | Rowling is a "lousy writer" The Leaky Cauldron has a transcript from an interview conducted by The Courier Mail with author Colleen McCullough ( The Thorn Birds). The author talks briefly about Harry Potter and offers her opinion on Rowling as a writer.
The entire interview can be read here. Quote:
One thing Colleen McCullough won't miss when she finally loses her
battle against a condition that is sending her blind is finding out what
happens to Harry Potter.
The prolific writer, and reader, who was in Brisbane recently to
promote her latest novel, Angel Puss, says part of the skill that makes her one of Australia 's most popular authors also prevents her from becoming a fan of the young wizard with the scar on his forehead.
"I have an editor in my head, that's why I can't read Harry Potter,
because she (J.K. Rowling) is such a lousy writer," the woman with the
giant-sized personality confessed.
"I applaud her so much, but I can't read Harry Potter because the
editor in my head is going strike that, why did you do that?"

Well, I've never read one of her books, in fact I have never even heard of her and I'm Australian so she can't really be that famous. But I suppose everyone is allowed their own opinion and this is her's.
I'm sorry that she is sick aswell.

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. It's nice to get news of people against Harry Potter than only of people for Harry Potter.
Thanks, Emma! :sorcerer:

She might be good, but not as good as JK!!!! *lousy my BUTT!!*

Ha Ha! She's anything but. JK is awesome, but everyone has their own opinion. Wait, how can she say she's a lousy writer, yet she has never read a Harry Potter book? Someone in a board on IMDB said that JK's writing was: Quote:
but her language is for children and the happenings are understandable and, under the certain circumstances that it is all fun and games and magic, everything is kind of "normal".
Of course I had to argue back. ^_~

I like JK's writing except for the fact that she has trouble writing deaths.I cried when Sirius died,of course, but not because of the way she wrote it....just cause it was Sirius.

| How dare she call one of my heros lousy! She should really get a grip. One day someone is going to turn around and a slap her in the face (for a moment i concidered doing it myself). Whats funny is that she is really confident in her own abilities. I think I have heard of the book but I've never read it and I've never heard of her. I bet she is just jealous that J.K Rowling is worldwide, inspiring, charitable, multi- millionaire author and she aint. |

i think JK is one of the best writers ever. most books i cant even stand, i've bought so many and theyre just there on my shelf/desk and i'll prolly never even read them. i tried but gave up after a chapter or so. when i first read HP i was extremely captivated and not many books do that to me. JK has inspired me to write more even though i think im awful and not really creative ... im stuck in the teen world of cliches cuz of all the TV i watch |

OMG woman! Grr....! J.K. didn't go to Oxford for nothing! She didn't work her toosh off when she was first writing the novels just to hear people like you get all hissy and jealous of her one-of-a-kind creativity! Do you have any idea what she's been through? She had to support her baby, BY HERSELF, with the novels! She would skip meals just so she could feed her baby, and all of her baby's belongings could fit in a small shoebox! I'm sorry lady that you feel this way, but I stand firmly next to Jo's side, and I'm sure others here do also. Also, I'm a very good proofreader and feel Jo does more than what's needed to make her books the best quality. Thanks to her, I've become compelled to read and write. Without her, I wouldn't know who I would be as a writer today.
Sorry....had to let that out *deep breaths* Why did I do that? It's not like she'll ever hear it; however, I do feel better....aahhh...

Pff...just got upset at someone today telling me they thought J.R.R. Tolkien was a lousy writer (he's tied as my favorite writer of all time-alongside Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Arthur C. Clarke, Aldous Huxley, Dan Brown and JK Rowling among others who are up there-Robert Jordan and G.R.R. Martin are fast apporaching that line too), and then I hear this...I tell you, some people are just plain ignorant or unappreciative of great works or jealous and envious or a mixture of all the above...it's novelists like them who make me want to be a writer...now if only I can get over my writer's block...

I hear lots of "anti-HP" rubbish at school, but most of the Hp-haters are by naive dullards who wouldn't recognise a good book if it danced in front of them in a bright pink one-piece bathing suit. No offence to these ppl, but now I know that some full-grown adults hate the HP books. One of the kids at school refuses to read them because "they are bad"! How in the name of Merlin would he know if he hasn't read them?

I've heard of her...just never read her work before. JK is an awesome writer! she's inspired so many of us to take a stab at writing stories. no matter how bad my writing is, i actually am trying my best to improve it and most of my stuff are hp related. not completely but somewhat.
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. she can say whatever she wants. probably just insecure tho.

How dare she!!!?!!!? JKRowling is an amazing writer! Just because she has an editor in her head or something like that doesn't mean she has to say that JKR is a lousy writer! Grr to whoever this person is!!!

| I love Colleen McCullough; I think she's a great writer and I enjoy her books, but her comment angers me. Who is she to say that JKR is a 'lousy writer'? What really constitutes a good writer... someone who uses lots of fancy metaphors and symbolism, but doesn't connect with an audience, or a person with imagination who creates characters and stories that speak to millions? And Colleen shouldn't really be talking... a good majority of her stories are historical fiction epics based on real people. She doesn't even create some of her stories, she just transcribes them! |

Well, once she reads all the books then she'll know why JK put everything she did.
