Ralph Fiennes was profiled recently on his body of film work, including playing Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter films. Ralph talks about his initial hesitation about taking the part of the Dark Lord, as well as analysing the character from a psychological perspective:

"I hesitated for a bit before committing to the role because it sort of requires you to personify evil, and I don't know how you do that," Fiennes says. "I latched onto what was maybe crude psychology in working out Voldemort's obsession with Harry.

Harry was loved by his parents, which Voldemort can't stand. He is, of course, a rejected person. It's quite basic: the rejected child who's emotionally been denied affection turns violent. You have to suggest there's more there, a life, a spirit, a mind. It isn't just a creepy voice and makeup. I always think you can find more in something. It's good to just keep asking questions until someone says cut."

he is so perfect for the role. and he's such a great actor!

I love Ralph as Voldemort, but I can see why he was so hesitant, not many people would want to play someone as evil as Voldemort, but I am glad her took the role. I don't think anyone could play him as well as Ralph.

Ralph makes a perfect Voldemort! This only confirms what I've been saying all along; Voldemort isn't pure evil. Not quite anyway!

Well he made a conscious decision to not make him a cardboard cutout, his exact quote was "I wanted him to be really, deeply evil, not an idea of evil", and in order to do that, there does have to be some semblance, however small, of humanity. I think he's fantastic, he never pushes it over the top. I saw some scenes they were shooting from the graveyard when he's been reborn, and in one particular take, he was looking at his hands and crying out in ecstasy, which I didn't think would have worked, because it's not what he did in the book. We can see the monster that he is, but we can tell it's still a "person", not just some guy with digitized makeup.
