Post Quote of the Week - Professor Maria Nikolajeva

Professor Maria Nikolajeva recently gave a talk at Cambridge University concerning how children's books help young people become 'critically thinking' adults. She also touched on the use of language in Harry Potter.

Quote:
She said books such as the Harry Potter series, which include made up words for spells such as "Alohomora" or "Evanesco", represented a language that needed to be acquired to exert power.

"It is in this respect interesting to consider the character of Hermione, who gets all her knowledge from books and who is the most proficient of the three friends," said Prof Nikolajeva.

That's an interesting way to think of it. Words are tools and knowledge is power.w

interesting article...and Harry Potter surely has helped kids to get into habit of reading and for teenagers and youngsters it has helped to draw parallel to what is happening in our world and in the wizard world. it really helps if not in getting solutions for our problems but atleast to understand the situation of our world and problems...in short yes it helps us in critical thinking as well...

The Harry Potter books were some of the best written books I've ever read. I do alot of reading, and I've got to say, that the Professor is correct. JK is awesome.

I agree that words lead to better thinking and power and that Harry Potter is some of the best writing I have read in years!! I hope Jo writes other stuff too, she is way to talented to just stop!! I finally got my niece(12) and nephew(11) to read HP and they are hooked!! YAY!

I have to agree with the Professor. A lot of my knowledge came from books.
