The non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest(CSPI) has issued a reportthat accuses certain companies of bypassing parents and marketing directly to children.
Report author Margo G. Wootan said characters like Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh, SpongeBob SquarePants and Elmo, as well as games, contests and sports stars, "are all enlisted to entice children to request low nutrition foods."
You may recall that CSPI launched the Save Harry campaign a couple of years ago in protest against Coca-Cola's merchandising agreementwith Warner Brothers for the Harry Potter movies.

This really irritates me. In the end, it's the parents who don't say no. If they don't buy these unhealthy things what can their children do about it? It's simply ridiculous. If CSPI has their way, no one will be allowed to advertise their products to children. It's preposterous to say that advertising campaigns undermine parental authority. All they do is encourage people to purchase their products. That is, after all, the purpose of advertising. This merely helps people not have to take responsibility for their own decisions. Grrrrr....

It is true that TV can be slightly trance-inducing... it can put people, especially children, into a slightly hypnotic state... so I think it's good there are groups who try to keep the junk food out of the shows. I mean, our population is fat enough as it is. Do we really need to be reminded to eat all the time?

This upset me this morning when I first heard it on the radio. It's amazing the lack of sight that this group has when it comes to Harry. One of JK's points in agreeing to that Coke campaign was that Harry would never be seen drinking a Coke. The only tie-in (if you could call it that) that I saw during the campaign was the music, and some owls flying around. I love Harry, but I don't like Coke, and did not run out to buy it simply because it was tied to Harry. However, I did go to ebay and buy some Harry/coke related items that were not avail in the US! Don't they realize that people have self will. If I can say "no" to myself, then I can certainly say it to my kids.

I don't recall seeing any coke products in the movies... but I do remember seeing an exceptional amount of sweets in the great hall a couple of times. this is probably what these people are objecting to.

Did you see 'brand name' sweets in familiar wrappers, like Nestle? No.
They're protesting the use of children's characters such as Harry Potter in order to advertise their own products, which are often unhealthy. It's like using pictures of Harry Potter on bags of Lays Chips...nine-year-olds will see Harry on the bags and think, "oh gosh, look, Harry Potter, gimme that, I want to eat those now". This is CSPI's equation of their problem:
The more advertising of Harry Potter (and other popular characters, like Spongebob) on junk = the more junk food kids eat. Result: greater nutrition problems.
The answer to their problem, in my opinion, is simple: Worry about yourselves and let parents take responsibility of what their kids eat. Let people advertise, but stress healthy nutrition to both children and adults.

Umm, Im sorry but I dont think Bernie Botts Every Flavor Beans was a real brand... and though it is now, way after the books have been out.. it was not JK Rowling who created them. It was indeed a CANDY company... maybe they should boycott them.

Ok, right. Advertisement: Is a thing which is SUPPOSED to make you lose your head. It's what they do it for. They WANT kids yammering "Mommy, mommy, BUY ME THAT COKE WITH HARRY POTTER ON IT!" in the hopes that Mommy will, indeed, buy that coke with Harry on it.
Of course, there is no reason why mommy shouldn't say, "No." or simply not take the kids out shopping... or refuse to allow said kids to wath TV....
Sure, these advertisements can be disruptive. But that's the way their meant to be. people get paid to make other people buy stuff. They are manipulators. People oncomfortable with the way it's affecting kids, should talk to the parents. Becaues the companies aren't going to budge- it's what they live on. MAny people make their money this
way- and they wouldn't take kindly to haveing to stop their jobs...
And... the prob is in no way confind to HP. It's not really HP... it's Coca-cola.
