| | Pottermore Magical Quill challenge Day 1 closed, new Privet Drive teaser image Pottermore.com's Magical Quill scavenger hunt has now begun, where fans of the Harry Potter books are given a question from the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, which they must answer to get the quill.pottermore.com/ access code in order to register. A screencap of the question for day one, on July 31, 2011, can be seen here.
For those who do know the answer and have registered, we advise you to put it under a spoiler tag, so as to avoid spoiling other fans: [*spoiler="Pottermore Magic Quill answer 1"]Answer text[*/spoiler] - but without the asterisks *
As for those who have registered, validated their emails and can see the image below, of Privet Drive at night surrounded by a flock of owls, please note that this is not the entrance to the beta site. Also, an alloted number of people will be chosen to gain access to this early site every day; after the number has been filled, registration access for the day will be closed, and fans will have to wait the following day to get a chance to register. Again, this will take place from July 31 to August 6, 2011.
Another email will be sent out to those who have validated their email addresses and have access so far to this early landing page, which will be their WELCOME EMAIL to the beta Pottermore.com site, where fans can receive their wands and head to Hogwarts.
A big note: the welcome letters can come to fans anytime after the Magical Quill challenge, starting August 7 to September 30, 2011, and the first million to respond to those welcome emails will be the first to test the beta site. If you receive the welcome email after the first million have been chosen, you will have to wait until October 2011, the official opening of Pottermore.com, to gain access. More on that can be read here, as released to SnitchSeeker by the Pottermore team: Quote:
Finally, please note that we will not be enabling early access to the site straight away. Once The Magical Quill challenge is over, we will send successful early access registrants a Welcome email, letting them know when they will be able to access Pottermore. We won’t be able to let everyone into the Beta site at the same time, so please be patient with us. You may have to wait a few weeks for your Welcome email to arrive.
And for those who have already registered, feel free to discuss it in this thread, including what your username is (if you so choose to divulge it). Good luck to all! UPDATE: Pottermore's official Insider blog just posted stating that registration for the first day is now CLOSED. The second day of registration will commence sometime August 1, 2011. Day 1 of The Magical Quill challenge is now closed.
If you didn’t get to register today, don’t worry – you’ll have another chance to find The Magical Quill and register for early access tomorrow. The Magical Quill’s location will change every day.
As there are a limited number of registration places available each day, we expect them to go very quickly. We won’t be announcing the arrival of a new clue on our Twitter account to ensure we don’t give an unfair advantage to Twitter users, but we will let you know, via @Pottermore and the Insider, once the maximum number of registrations for each day has been reached.
We expect a large number of people to try and solve The Magical Quill clues and enter the Pottermore early access registration process. This means that you may have to wait to access the Pottermore site pages. If this happens, please bear with us while we try and direct you to the correct page. If there are any serious access difficulties, we will update this blog with the relevant information.
We will also be varying the time each clue is revealed – as well as the difficulty of the clues – to give as many people as possible a chance to register for early access.
If you did register for early access today, then congratulations! You should receive your validation email shortly. Don't forget to click the link in your validation email within 48 hours; this will secure your early access place.
Please note that we will not be enabling early access to the site straight away. Once The Magical Quill challenge is over, we will send successful early access registrants a Welcome email, letting them know when they will be able to access Pottermore. We won’t be able to let everyone into the Beta site at the same time; you may have to wait a few weeks for your Welcome email to arrive. NOTE: You may also insert your Pottermore name into your SnitchSeeker profile, if you would like to, by following this link and completing the field titled "Pottermore Username". |

can someone who done it already please explain this to me? You give the system your name, date of birth, and some other details to register.
It then suggests five completely random names -- you pick one of these. And then that becomes your Pottermore username.
It's completely random. The only choice you get is picking one from the five names it offers.

it generates 5 usernames once you sign in/ validate your name and email right?
so it generates them based on what? your name?
i'm asking because there is someone here who talked about her username and number as if she was able to pick it all herself.
but its been said you cant do that- the site makes up the username for you.
so you dont get to pick the combination of words or the number? the site does it for you?

I misunderstood, I thought you were wondering which words site used to make these usernames |

so you dont get to pick the combination of words or the number? the site does it for you? It generates your username once you've solved the clue and then entered your date of birth and name, but it's completely random. The numbers at the end of your username have nothing to do with your age or date of birth (unless it's pure coincidence). And it's not related to your name either. So basically yes, the site does it for you, completely at random.

so you dont get to pick the combination of words or the number? the site does it for you? you chose an username BEFORE you sign in. it's the part of a registration. for example I chose my username but still didn't get my validation e-mail so I can't sign in.
and it's completely random, the site just takes two words and a number, it has nothing to do with you name or date of birth.

so once i solve the clue and find the quill (or solving the clue IS finding the quill)?
it takes me to a page with a list of five combinations of username and number and i pick one....
so i could get something like (for example these are made up) EaterSilver87, RoseOwl21, Patronuswitch45, Scarletspell94, and Potionhazel246 ....and i pick one of those as my username?
is that it?

is that it? No, there's always a clue. Today's was "How many owls are on the Eeylops Owl Emporium sign? Multiply by 49." You ca easily find that there's 5 owls in the sign, multiplied by 49 it's 245. You were supposed to type quill.pottermore.com/answer (i.e. quill.pottermore.com/245) into your browser and there "catch" (click on) a magical quill. That took you on a registration page where you filled up your name, date of birth, location, email and then chose your username. And then you just wait for you confirmation e-mail. After August 6th, you are supposed to wait for a welcome e-mail.

I stayed up until 4:00 am to get the clue. I registered and got my username at 4:02 am. It's now 11:52 am EST, and I still don't have my email.
I don't know whether to cry or throw things. This is just so not cool.

okays thanks everyone for answering my question on usernames! (I just hope i at least get a choice of one pretty one if i manage to register)
one other question now- i get that you solve the clue, type the answer quill.pottermore.com/answer.... and then it takes me to a page where i can find the quill....
do i have to look really hard for it (like "where's waldo in this image" kind of hard) or it just appears on the page because i found the clue and gave the right answer and i click on it?

I'm pretty sure that all of you who got to register this morning ARE one of the 1,000,000. You do NOT need to try again this week. It says you will get a welcome e-mail within several weeks, so that they can stagger the activiation of the 1,000,000.

do i have to look really hard for it (like "where's waldo in this image" kind of hard) or it just appears on the page because i found the clue and gave the right answer and i click on it? It's REALLY easy to click on a quill. there's several of them flying around but the one you're supposed to click one has some sort of a blue glow around it. Even little kid can do it, I think to hardest task is actually to solve to clue Quote:

Here's the part that I think is confusing people about whether they are or are not part of the 1,000,000. What happens when I find The Magical Quill? Once you have found The Magical Quill, you will be redirected to Pottermore.com. If the registration process is still open for that day, you will be able to submit your details to register to access Pottermore early. It is important to note that finding The Magical Quill does not guarantee you access to registration, as registration will only remain open while the early access places allocated for the relevant day, between 31 July and 6 August, are available.
I think that just means that if you are one of the last to find the quill for the day, you may not get to the registration page if the quota is reached between the time you find the quill, and the time you get to the registration page. It doesn't guarantee you ACCESS TO REGISTRATION. But if you do get there in time, once you are registered, and choose your screen name....you're in!

Shannon Same. Signed up at about 4:10 EST. 8 1/2 hours later, I'm stuck with nothing. I heard that Yahoo accounts were having trouble (which is what I used to sign up). Did you sign up with a yahoo account?

Confirmation on the Pottermore blog that once you've confirmed your account via email, you are one of the 1million and you will get a welcome email to let you into Beta at some point in the few weeks after August 6th! "Once I’ve clicked on the link in my registration validation email, will I be able to access Pottermore?
We will not be enabling early access to the site straight away. Once The Magical Quill challenge is over we will begin to send Beta registrants Welcome emails as and when they will be able to have full access to the site. We won’t be able to let everyone into the Beta site at the same time, so you may have to wait a number of weeks for your Welcome email to arrive. However, if you have been successful in registering during The Magical Quill challenge, we can confirm you will gain access ahead of the site opening to all in October, so please be patient!"

Hmm. When did it start today? Just checked it and it was already closed! How long was it open for? And what time did it start?

I'm registered, my name is StoneFloo4. It's the only username I've seen with just one number in it, and it's pretty short, so I picked it Even though it sounds like a disease (Swine Floo anyone?)
Just so you guys know, the clue could come up at any time during the day (maybe even when it's not that date where you live! So keep checking), and no one knows when it will come up. The only reason people knew last time was because the LeakyCon attendees got a head start: They knew that the clue had something to do with Diagon Alley, and they knew that the clue would come up sometime after midnight PST. The LeakyCon people told the rest of us their advantage, so that's why "Diagon Alley" was trending worldwide on Twitter, before the clue even went up. It kind of backfired on them. Oh well.
Also, the clue each day is going to be about each book. So tomorrow's clue will be about COS, next day POA, next day GOF, etc. So get your books ready. The answer will most likely also be a number, so every language's answer will be the same. So get your calculators ready too.
Well good luck!
