Post Potter star to be new Doctor Who?

Chris Eccleston, who starred as the Doctor in the newest series of Doctor Who, has sensationally revealed that he is to quit after just one series, according to The Daily Mirror and CBBC Newsround. Hot favourites to replace him include two Potter stars.

Chris, 41, has refused to appear in the second series for fear of becoming typecast.

He had earlier hinted towards his departure, saying, "I might be the first Doctor to just appear in one series.

"It's been brilliant to make but it's hard work. It's a long time to be away from home. It's hard on anyone in a relationship.

"It would be great to have a 10th Doctor, then an 11th. The show will go on and on - it's not about me."

Hot favourites to replace him include David Tennant (Barty Crouch Jnr) and David Thewlis (Prof. Lupin).

Last night it was revealed that Scottish actor, David Tennant, had already been approached by the BBC.

Quote:
David, 31, admitted: "I've never made any secret that I'm a big fan of Doctor Who and it's the reason I got into acting. It would be a great role to play."
Dr. Who websites are apparently showing support for David Thewlis, the actor whom they'd like to be the next Timelord.

Other candidates for the role include Bill Nighy, David Warner, Ediie Izzard and Richard E Grant.

Billie Piper is expected to return as Rose, the Doctor's Assitant.

I'm gutted. I know only one of the 13 episodes have aired but Chris was really really good. I am so so so gutted.

I'd prefer David Thewlis to get it over David Tennant. Tennant looks to boyish to me and Thewlis would have that mystic attractiveness which Doctor Who should have.

But then again, with a baby on the way and OotP starting shooting the same time as Doctor Who series 2, could Thewlis really do it? (Considering the fact that HP is mainly filmed in London & Doctor Who is mostly in Cardiff). I hope so. It'd be cool if he did it moreso because I live in Cardiff, hehehe photo opportunities!

*fingers crossed*

I'm still gunna miss Chris.

Okay, now who is Chris Eccleston, and what role did he play in Harry Potter?

He wasn't in HP but the two who are up to replace him (David Thewlis & Tennant) are. Thewlis is Lupin & Tennant is Crouch Junior.

Never watched Doctor Who, probably won't get the chance any time soon, but my vote is with David Thewlis too. I rented "Prime Suspect 3" with him in it and he's such a great actor. Obviously I don't know how the other guy is, but David Thewlis is great.

^ This series is scheduled to be aired in the US and Australia later this year, so you guys will be able to watch Doctor Who 2005 too! Pics from the newest series are in my avvy & sig. Rose, a live mannequin, the Doctor (Chris) & a Dalek.

*is such a sci-fi NERD*

But I back Thewlis all the way. I could so see him riding in the Tardis. & Lupin doesn't really have a big role in OotP so he might be able to do it. Then again the stupid BBC haven't approached him *pokes them*

Ah, I'll have to check it out then!

ETA: I really love David Thewlis, I'd love to see him in it... I'd definitely watch then. And you're right, his role in OotP isn't that big and since they have to scale down the books... it'll be even shorter.

Oops! I probably misunderstood the news article! I think I shall back Thewlis as well even though I have never heard of these series, forget watching them.

^ haha I know what you mean. Total newcomer Vs Seasoned Pro.

I don't know what it is but Chris just has that something. He is truly amazing - I know that's a bit flammatory given the fact i've only seen 1 episode - but like my mum said, he has that 'X' factor (for lack of a better phrase) that something that draws you to them.

I don't think Tennant could portray that unplottable attraction. Whereas I think Thewlis could.

He'll be typecasted after this one series anyways, whether or not he continues.

As someone who has memories of watching the series in the 80's, I am glad it is back, although I found out that the actor I had been watching, had the role around the time I was born!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I think his excuse is a little lame. What the problem in starring in another season???????

I think I'll check Doctor Who out ( when it airs over here, of course )... Hopefully David Thewlis gets the job..

I forgot to mention that I don't want to see any of those actors form Harry Potter as the Doctor, simply because they too may quit after their first season in the series in fear of typecasting and this
Most of you are too young to know what this means, but when I was watching at a younger age in the 80's, it made my mind to travel in space and time (well it wasn't the only one, but had something different from other programmes)

I despise being ignorant, but I must admit I have no idea who "Doctor Who" is and therefore can't really give much of an opinion. But I can say that very greatly admire the acting talents of David Thewlis and would root for him in any role he intended to persue.

Well I thought Eccleston was good, but I know others who don't like him...It'd be so great if Thewlis got it, but like you said Emma, the timing isn't exactly right is it!
