Potter sales set to be bigger than The Beatles

The Harry Potter books have sold more than 260 million copies. They've outstripped Queen of Pop Madonna's sales, and are set to overtake The Beatles. A spokesman for publishers Bloomsbury say Harry Potter sales show no sign of slowing down.

Quote:

HARRY Potter author JK Rowling's books have sold more than 260million copies.

She's outstripped Queen of Pop Madonna's sales - and is set to overtake The Beatles.

In just seven years since the launch of her first Harry Potter story, Rowling has become one of the most popular global artists of all time.

Estimated Beatles sales vary between 600million and one billion records.

Madonna comes close to the top with 200million.

But Elvis is the biggest recording artist ever, selling more than a billion records and CDs worldwide since 1954.

Rowling's agent, Christo-pher Little, announced the huge sales following the release of the paperback version of Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix.

She is already working on her next book, Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince.

A spokesman for publishers Bloomsbury said: 'The sales show no sign of slowing down.'

But on the literary front, Rowling will never be bigger than God - the Bible has sold up to six billion copies in its various forms.

And The Little Red Book - quotations from the works of Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung - has sold 800million copies

200 million is only a third of 600 million. Plus the Beatles are still shifting merchandise and reaping in profits. I doubt HP will catch up, let alone take over. Not for another couple of decades at least.

Thank goodness. She should never be bigger than God 'cos then that would prove that Harry Potter was going a little too far. It'd sorta be like blasphemy for that to happen.

Jeez, that's a lot!

If the HP series ever overtook the Bible, all the people that hate HP for religious reasons would go mad.

Well isn't selling books a tad bit different than selling records and music? Or has the Beatles and Elvis written books too?... :/

Wow, what alot of books! Yeah they must categorise record sales and book sales as the same. Hmm, they haven't said about LOTR, I'm sure that's sold LOADS, I mean on the DVD it says that in the 20th century the only thing that sold more was the Bible. Anyway, it's cool, but I doubt it will catch up with The Beatles. But I agree Harry Potter and The Beatles are 2 of the coolest things ever!

But it may catch up once all seven books are out, and translated...

I found that funny, but yes, it is unlikely she will sell that many! But then again, the bible has been around alot longer, by the time my Great Great Great grandkids are grown up, who knows!
