| | Potter fans abandon pet owls (UPDATED)
According to the Flintshire Wildlife and Pet Rescue Centre, Harry Potter fans have been purchasing owls, and learning the hard way that birds of prey do not make good pets for muggles.
The rescue centre is sheltering nearly a dozen barn and tawny owls. Quote:
Co-owner of the rescue centre, Joy Pierce Jones, said: "Harry Potter was definitely one of our biggest downfalls.
"People have been phoning up rescue centres, wanting to buy an owl for their children.
"Owls just aren't suitable as pets and while they are generally friendly, they do have their off days and can bite.
"They can quite easily take your eye out or ear off."
Source: Evening Leader
UPDATE: The BBC have an audio interview with one of the representatives from the centre. It can be listened to here (Note: You must be in the U.K. for it to work). |

I'm glad that the shelter is trying to help. People do this will ALL types of animals. Not just owls. My family volunteers at an animal shelter every chance we get and people do this with cats and dogs as well. Its a sickness really. How little we value the lives of these little creatures.

| Aw poor owls, the parents probably should've known better than to buy an owl for their children though. |

Buying an owl as a pet? Seriously??
Okay it may seem cool having an owl as a pet after reading/watching Harry Potter but I don't think it's a good idea to have one. Poor owl would be stuck in a cage.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to get a pet just for your child, and expect your child to take care of it and whatnot. If you, as an adult, plan on taking care of the pet that's one thing, but getting an animal specifically for your child just isn't right. Kids aren't responsible enough to take care of an animal. The same thing happens with dogs. People buy puppies because they're soo cute, but then they grow up, and they don't like the dogs anymore and abandon them.
Ugh, anyways. Owls are not domestic animals, let them be free!!!! Hehehe.

I have a fake owl with a plastic shape covered in real owl feathers, and it sits above my TV staring at me. I like it, it won't take my eye out or my ears off.

That's terrible.
Though I hate to admit, Harry Potter's fiction, kids.
If you wanna send letters, do it the Muggle way.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ellie Summers Sixth Year | i agree that harry potter is great but they shouldn't be getting an owl because they want a life like harry potter cos for goodness sake we are muggles not wizards and witches like harry. i wonder if another movie that comes out with animals in it will be like this. it is like Charlotte's web and everyone goes out and buys a pig. very crazy indeed and the poor owls how would they feel. |

That has go tot be the most retarded thing I have ever heard. Why on earth would you buy an owl for your child!? I mean the Lion King was one of Disney's greatest creations no one went out and bought a lion cub for their kids! Man that is funny. A fantasy book is not REAL!! I mean next people are going to be in New Zealand looking for elves and dwarves from the Lord of The Rings!

No offense, but I would've thought the parents would've considered an owl for a pet very carefully, before actually going ahead and getting one for their children.
