| | Potter does damage to falconry Berwick Today has an article about Mark Duran who runs a falconry business. He refers to harry Potter and how it has made birds of prey 'cool' to the point where it could potentially lead to pet owls becoming neglected. Quote:
There has been an increase in interest in the sport in recent years, fuelled in part by a certain fictional schoolboy wizard with a pet owl, but this leads to people with no specialist knowledge attempting to look after them.
Sarah says: "The worst thing that has happened to falconry is Harry Potter. Anybody can go along and buy an owl and often they don't know anything about it.
"A lot of barn owls end up getting handed in as rescue birds — and it's not even a barn owl in Harry Potter!"

Wow. thats horrible that people are taking on these birds when unprepaired! Why don't they just go to see them occasionally at wildlife centres!?

I think that owls would be especially hard to take care of and people should have to go through some kind of proper training before being able to buy one as a pet.

I always thought most kinds of owls are considered endangered species and that laws prohibit you from keeping them as pets, unless you have a special license ... hard to believe you can just buy them in pet stores in GB! But I guess different countries have different regulations on that - I live in Germany and I've never heard of anyone owning a bird of prey unless he's a professional falconer, wildlife preservation laws are kind of strict here.

I think owls are adorable creatures and if I were able to get one as a pet, I would. I'd take good care of him and do some research. *thinks of a name for her pet owl* lol

If I were to get an owl (as I've thought of doing), I would MAKE SURE it was taken care of properly. I'm not going to get one, and neglect it. Totally uncalled for. But I believe owls should be left in their natural habitat. They're not cats.

Source: HPANA. Hmm I don't know It's really a no win situation the books are out there now so... but it is a pity that people buy these Owls without knowing how to take proper care of them!

Nobody should have any pet without knowing how to properly take care of it.

This is awful. And I have heard about people wanting to buy a cat or a dog only because for some reason a particular breed has become popular. And then they decide that they do not want it any more and they abandon it in animal sanctuaries in the best cases
I have a dog myself and I try to do my best to keep her happy
