A school in Chemnitz, Germany, has taken the Harry Potter books off the syllabus after parents objected to their use on "religious grounds". The parents claimed that the representation of religion in the series offended their Christianity. The depiction of magic and mysticism was also said to "disturb" parents.
The book has now been replaced with Rennschwein Rudi Rüssell (Rudi Ruessell the Racing Pig). However, children whose parents don't object to the Potter novels are being allowed to work with them in small groups. Quote:
The education-policy spokeswoman in the legislature's Left party parliamentary group criticized the school's action as "an act of self-censure."
"(By acquiescing to the request,) the school director is essentially inviting religious fundamentalists to interfere with the educational and academic goals of state-funded schools, according to their discretion," Julia Bonk said.
"The lesson plans of state-funded schools should not be subject to approval by people who hold all possible religious convictions," she said.

I hate how Christianity can condem books, but still have the bloodiest past of any religion. I'm Catholic so I'm not just trashing Christians, but their is certainly a lot of hipocracy in Christianity.

Christians banning books about fictional characters who, also christians, happen to use magic... this is never going to end. I wish the people who keep resisting HP on these grounds would just read John Granger's book, Looking for God in Harry Potter.
I'm constantly amazed at how stupid some people can be.

It's so frustrating when others feel that they can think for us because they somehow know better than we do about how to raise our own children. Although sometimes it's necessary to regulate...it's just a question of where to draw the line. I personally think they're being ridiculous in this case, but what can you do?

If they start removing all books with reference to witches or magic even... they will have to go as far back as MacBeth.... maybe even farther... there wont be a book left in ANY library..
Sorry this is a really touchy subject for me. I say if any child (And MANY KUDOS TO YOU ALL OUT THERE) reads a 600+ page book...  no matter what the subject... then buy the kid a steak dinner... not punish them because they took a break from reality and mundane for a little fantasy and fiction..

Didn´t quite get it. Haven´t seen christianity offended in the books. They are universal because no religion is mentioned. Everyone can read them and there still is the good-versus-evil thingy. Do they think it´s offensive that the Christianity is not mentioned or do they think Harry Potter tries to mock Jesus?
I know one priest, though, who lacks the sense of humour when it comes to witchcraft and wizardy. He hasn´t read the Books and the subject is forbidden to his 8 and 10 yeared sons. The may play ninja and other violent things, though. He refused to look at my sketch of Zaza after his wife had said it had something to do with Harry Potter. Seriously: He looked to another direction and pretended not to hear what I said. He loves the Beatles, though, even they were into Asian religions .... Despite of this, he is mostly harmless and even funny  We all have our prejudices, I guess.

I personally think if certin parents have issues with harry potter they can have there kids read an altenative book
that said i would like to remind the christians who critize magic that BOTH C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien both refer to magic in there writings and lewis definetly refered to witches and other beings in his writings
so i could say be careful before you condem all of the icons
p.s. im christian so i can say that without feeling horrible and being judgemental
