| | Opinion:Azkaban was much better than the first two - a wizardnews follow-up Summary:
At the end of last month, I posted a news article about an Open Letter to Mike Newell, the director of the next Harry Potter film. Here is a response to it. Article:
Thanks to Wizardnews for this interesting read Quote: Regarding the "Open Letter to Mike Newell" published recently on Wizard News, I do not believe it was an accurate representation of how all fans feel about Alfonso Cuaron's direction of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Ironically, the thing I found missing in the first two movies was the very thing the author of the open letter found missing in Prisoner of Azkaban: a heart. There was nothing obviously wrong with the first two movies, the deviations from the book were very few and far between, and the acting was superb for the most part, yet I remained emotionless the entire viewing. Quote: Prisoner of Azkaban, on the other hand, moved me to the point of tears the second time I saw it. To me, Prisoner of Azkaban had far more depth than the first two, and I loved what Alphonso Cuaron did with this movie.
I also think the cinematography of the first two movies was bland when compared to Prisoner of Azkaban. Even after repeated viewings I am still moved by the beauty of scenes like the forest at night, the Dementors by the lake, and Harry’s hippogriff ride. I also think the people in the pictures on the walls added delightful humour to the movie. Quote: Of course, this is all just my opinion. But when it comes to whether the third movie portrayed the essence of the books, there is one person who definitely should know better than anyone, and that is J. K. Rowling. And she loved it (check out her comments on it at her official website, www.jkrowling.com). Not only has she stated that it was her favorite movie, but that Cuaron was so in tune with the books and where the series was headed he inadvertently included foreshadowing to books 6 and 7. Quote: It is inevitable that Mike Newell’s Hogwarts will be different from Chris Columbus’s. If Mike Newell tried to emulate Chris Columbus, he would end up with only a pale, flat echo of Columbus’s work. The best results for Goblet of Fire will result only if Mike Newell believes in what he is doing and uses his passion and originality to shape it.
I thank Alfonso Cuaron for carrying out his vision of an amazing and touching movie, and I have high hopes he will take on another Harry Potter film in the future. All the best of luck to Mr. Newell, and I cannot wait to see his rendition of Goblet of Fire!* Wizardnews |

i agree with every word. mike newell should definitely not try to emulate anyone else. he should direct it in the way he wants to, not how others woul had they directed it.
PS- yay! first to post!

Gag on my own vomit.
POA was unworthy of the book it destroyed.
From start to finish, it took a great book and utterly abandoned it, heart and soul.
I too was nearly moved to tears; tears of rage as I saw what Alfonz did to a great book.

I could not disagree with you more, Ospreyone. He added a certain depth to Hogwarts that Columbus could never dream of doing.
I think Marcella_Riddle has it right.

And I think everybody is biased on their fav director. Columbus was a horrible director: none of his work in worth the filth in my hair! If comparison is made, yes, Cuadron is VERY much a better director. But that doesn't mean he actually did his job! That wasn't the PoA movie, that wasn't the book story-line, THAT WAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIE WITH THE SAME NAME! In other words, that was a FANFICTION of a fan with too much free time and no good interpretation as a director... but I was a fool to expect more...and one thing I agree with Ospreyone is that I nearly cried of rage when I saw it!
Do I even have to tell why I think it was that way? The only thiunk I keep enjoying about the movies are Alan Rickman as Snape, and one or two scenes that Cuadrón (and Cuadrón only) got right - on its character interpretation at least.

i agree with the letter-it was so much more emotional and moving-it was definitely my favorite film!!
Chris Columbus is not a horrible director though!!! i think he did an excellent job with PS and COS!! i felt emotional during those too-but more so in POA. Chris created this whole HP world and it is very hard to do something like that-i just think it was great! i love PS and COS very much! they were my favorite films ever until POA, now COS is in 2nd place then PS-but they're very close!! i love all the films but i definitely POA ruled out-it rocks!!!
