Apparently the Houses for North American wizarding school Ilvermorny were leaked through Pottermore's JavaScript page coding, and can be read below.

It seems that there will eventually be some kind of Sorting page or quiz to see what school House students and even Harry Potter fans belong into, judging by the coding. Here's what it says.

It can be assumed what a Horned Serpent looks like, or even what it represents (sounds suspiciously like Slytherin) and even the Thunderbird. The Wampus and Pukwudgie may be lesser known, but here are some descriptions of them:

• The Wampus cat is a creature in American folklore, variously described as some kind of fearsome variation of a cougar.

• A Pukwudgie is a 2-or-3-foot-tall troll-like being from the Wampanoag folklore. Pukwudgies' features resemble those of a human, but with enlarged noses, fingers and ears. Their skin is described as being a smooth grey, and at times has been known to glow.

It's unknown which American wizards and witches from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them were Sorted into what Houses, and that includes characters like Tina and Queenie Goldstein (played by Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol respectively), Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) and President Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo).

Undoubtedly as the URL/link for this quiz does exist, at some point probably toward the opening of the first Fantastic Beasts movie it will go live so fans can take the test. Thanks to Ian for sending the email tip over earlier today.

Do of course note that while the Houses are listed on the coding page, it does not mean that Pottermore's official team or J.K. Rowling have confirmed them, yet, so for now they can be regarded as strongly-backed rumors.

I wonder how close these houses are with ones we already know. I mean, would it be safe to assume that they're all going to be equivalents? Because it seems pretty clear which ones would line up with which if so.

I'm wondering this too. I was hoping that Ilvermorny's houses would be based around different traits from Hogwarts ones, just for some variety, but based on the mascots they seem like they might be more equivalent. Except for the pukwudgie, that one seems like it could be different

well I guess it depends on how detailed Jo wanted the houses to be, if it's a minor point in the greater story that is Fantastic Beasts its likely she just made direct equivalents.

I'm kinda hoping she considered these with care and tweaked the sorting to be even more accurate than what we currently have for Hogwarts, as the current ones are a bit lopsided to serve the story she was trying to tell. so far the "sorting" thats the most accurate to me are the ones from the Divergent stories-- which are based on the Hogwarts houses, only more complete in personality profile.

well a big reason why Pottermore came about was to flesh out the HP world beyond what the books could provide, which it is doing, but with the Sorting its not quite as straightforward or as comprehensive as i would've hoped. theres a lot of extrapolating, of which can be flawed since perception of characters and motivations differ depending on who's reading / analysing. there isnt really a "bible" (for lack of a better word) when it comes to Potter Sorting thats disclosed to the public. Divergent Factions are listed in black and white, then uses it as a foundation to build its storyverse.

going back to Illvermorny sorting, im hoping Jo can correct this so that certain people classified into certain houses wouldnt suffer the stereotyping that occurred during the Potter series (like Slytherins always being bad, Ravenclaws always being bookish etc etc).

This all started out as an attempt to write an AI with a machine learning algorithm that can reverse engineer the sorting quiz and the wand quiz so that people can "preview" their answers to see what house they get assigned. I saw the unused code while I doing research on how I might make a browser extension to slurp up the answers.

Anyway, I was able to hit the API to get all of the questions/possible answers from the existing quizes. I got an empty response from the API for the Ilvermorny. Empty response sounds like it might be a dead end, but not to a web programmer like me. Ordinarily, I'd expect a "not found" response. So, this means they're probably ready to launch the quiz - just need to add a few things to the database powering the site to open it up to everyone.

As soon as they add the questions to the database, then I can hit the API and get all of the questions and possible answers. Unfortunately, without a few hundred people filling out the quizes and giving me their answers - I can't train the AI to guess the house correctly.

But at least we could get the questions.

Also, who wants to bet some butthurt programmer decides to swing a ban hammer at my account on Pottermore? lol

whats the AI for though? are you gonna mirror the sorting onto one of those other quiz sites?

with Fantastic Beasts coming out in November, they're likely holding off on that Ilvermorny quiz, pretty sure they want to use it as a marketing tool for the movie. If they havent locked it down tight by then, then maybe you might still have some luck grabbing what you need? although i cant see this as anything JKR would approve of

(or Warner Bros for that matter)

also a ban of your Pottermore account might probably be the least of your concerns man

(thats not even a thing for your skillset). just be careful, im hoping you dont mean anything malicious, but from a certain perspective this can be seen that way

But the gist of what the AI was for was simply to try writing an AI.

As for whether or not I "hacked" Pottermore, I certainly didn't. In order to use their website properly, I have to download their JS file. They willingly handed me the information. As for the AI, again - I'm not breaking into their servers to steal code. I am, effectively, making a robot to take their quiz. I'm not worried about legal repercussions. However, they would be within their rights to ban my Pottermore account (I think it would be petty of them, but c'est la vie).

You're right, it could be mascots. It could also be wand cores. Or, it could be filler text from a programmer that's waiting for the real text. The wording "belong" seems to suggest it's a house.

It wouldn't surprise me if these are house names, nor would it surprise me if they were mascots being used as filler text for actual house names. It could go either way, honestly, especially as the source is code for a page that wasn't set to be released just yet. The Hogwarts houses are all named for the school founders, but very obviously each of those have names that lend themselves to specific animal mascots/animal imagery, hence a snake for Slytherin etc etc. Each school could have a very different way of naming their houses however, especially as not every school is likely to have four founding members but might still have four houses.

Given the way the world at large seems inclined to name various teams after animals (or vicious weather, as my alma mater opted for, or groups of people, which is obviously often a lot more questionable in the ethics department) it just doesn't seem too much of a stretch that the houses might actually be named for their creature mascots rather than for founders or any other way.

You raise an interesting point. In the UK, a lot of things are named after animals. What we in the US call a "crosswalk" is called a "zebra crossing" in the UK (get it? stripes). I think that for awhile there, they called police cars "panda cars" too (on account of the whole black/white thing). The UK also has pelican crossings, which are just the controlled cross walks without zebra striping. There are a bunch.

Point is, maybe the houses in Britain are named after people and the houses in the US are named after fantastic beasts.
