| | No age limit for Equus audience Equus producer David Pugh announced yesterday that there will be no age limit for audience members of Dan Radcliffe’s new play, despite graphic violence and explicit nude scenes. This decision goes against other West End theatres’ policies and is expected to raise some highly controversial debate. Quote:
We will offer parental guidance and we will point out that some scenes in Equus are unsuitable for children. But there will not be a ban on them attending the performance. Every child is different and they will react to the play differently.
I am not going to start playing the game where I say you can't come because you are 11 or you can't come because you are 14.
Who the hell am I to start saying that?
I saw the play at 14 and it changed my life. If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't be producing it now.
Equus, which centers around the relationship between a psychiatrist and his disturbed teenage patient, includes nudity and violent images of the teen blinding horses with a metal spike. Quote:
The nudity and those scenes are an essential part of the story. We are not doing it as an excuse to show Harry Potter's willy.
Daniel is fully committed to the role and he has not asked for any special favours.
While some critics don’t feel Dan’s acting ability is up to the challenging role, Equus author, Peter Shaffer, isn’t among them. For years, Shaffer has refused to back other productions of his award-winning play, but was so impressed by Dan’s audition that he fully supports this one.
David Pugh explains: Quote:
It wasn't a question of finding a play for Daniel to do because we knew it would be a hit.
I have been wanting to do a production of Equus for eight years and the problem has always been finding the right boy.
When Daniel performed for us at the workshop we couldn't take our eyes off him.

Aw, too bad I'm in Canada... if only I could fly over there...
Never heard of the play b4, but if it plays long enough that I can fly over there, well I'd get a ticket! (both plane and theatre, not like I'm just gonna jump onto the plane without paying!)

I think it depends on whether or not you want your kids to see it. I don't think a little child would really be interested by it, therefore I wouldn't take my child to see it. But, as always, go Dan!

Well I don't know...
If they don't want to put an age limit that's okay, the director is right, who is he to tell people wether they can watch the play or not. But if I had kids, I wouldn't want them watching the play. I just think that each parent should decide on wether their children shoud watch it.
Go dan! |

| although I agree that it is up to parents, I thought that the play would be given an over 13 age limit.
I would love to see it but I live too far away

I will say that this play is highly philisophical, intense, and very disturbing. I saw a college production of it (the one I was attending, actually) and it was wonderful. I still shudder, hearing whispers of "equus," and can invision the boy in the production reciting the names leading up to Equus as though reciting the geneology from the Bible. The role is extremely intense. The fact that Radcliffe impressed the producer so, with how picky he apparently is for this role, means that this will be an excellent production.
Just as a warning, if you're planning to see it be prepared. I'm not sure what this production of Equus is going to be like, but you might want to pick up the script for the play to see if you'll enjoy it. And don't watch the movie. It doesn't do the play justice.
Oh, as a side note, our theater rarely does age restrictions and you had to have your parents there if you were under 18 for the production.

That's all well and good for mature teenagers who are able to handle such themes, however I'm not exactly in agreement about kids no matter how young they may be being able to see stuff like that. But I suppose most parents will have enough sense to not let their very young children see it, so *shrug*.
Personally, I wouldn't really be interested in seeing such a play due to the simple fact of animal cruelty being one of the "themes" in it. I just don't go for stuff like that, even in books or movies etc.

I so agree art is so good and no one should be stopped from seeing it. I wish I could go and see it, but as I live in the US I can't would love to see it.

I'd love to see it, but it's too expensive for me! Maybe they'll bring it out on dvd like some other West end productions, I hope so.

I cannot imagine kids watching it o_0
Below 11 year olds being exposed, not only to nudity - live on stage, plus this nude boy performing the sexual act on top of a horse, and with a lead girl, plus very violent acts of cruelty to animals in a storyline that kids may not fully understand |

| ♥ Mrs. Itachi Uchiha™ & MAJNOO! : Bleach & Kyo & Natsume ♥ [ Maxh!Jesh ] Well, I can’t imagine eight year olds watching it. O_o. Teenagers with a more mature mentality level might be able to understand it fully, but seriously. Well, I just hope parents have enough sense not to let their too-young-for-it kids watch it. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: unsorted | No age limit......... I want to go and see that play so bad!! It would be a terrible thing if I flew all the way over there and then I find out that I am too young to see the play. I don't think they should put an age limit on it. Though they should tell you when nudity scene's are going to appear on the stage. |

Yea!! Good for Dan! I hope he's not tied to Harry Potter forever. Equus is a great way for him to stretch his acting ability!
I wonder if Dan is going on stage completely naked or if he's going to have one of those flesh colored underwear things. It takes a lot of courage to go out on stage with nothing on. What if Emma or Rupert come out to see him? Do the really want to see Dan baring nothing? |

Naked. As in completely naked. I've never seen the production done another way.
