Nicholas Hooper talks Order of the Phoenix & Half-Blood Prince scores

Warner Bros announced on their Harry Potter Twitter yesterday that they would release an exclusive interview with Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince composer Nicholas Hooper (who is nominated for a Grammy this week for his work on the sixth film's score). In it, Hooper talks about his work schedule for recording music, his favourite and most difficult piece to score in Half-Blood Prince, inspirations for his music, and much more. It can be read below.

"Dumbledore's Farewell" and "When Ginny Kissed Harry" are my favorites out of this soundtrack. "Dumbledore's Farewell" makes me cry so much :( It's absolutely beautiful.

^ Totally agree! Nicholas does such a good job on the scores! It always makes me even more emotional.

The music for Dumbledore's death was pretty amazing. He did an excellent job!

Looneybird 01-30-2010 01:05 AM

"When Ginny Kissed Harry" and the "Weasley Stomp" were my favorite...oh and "Malfoy's Mission" of course...I felt the isolated/depressed/lonely emotions with that one. I loved "Dumbledore's Army" from OOTP/HBP...always cheers me up when I'm sad. :)

Composers really have a big job to do haha. Writing music for a scene that has not been filmed sounds very difficult but these amazing composers pull it off so well!

When Ginny kissed Harry and the Weasley Stomp are my favourites! I don't have to listen to them I learnt how to play them on guitar!

veggie_potter 01-30-2010 01:12 AM

Awww! How great! I hope he gets the award. He did a great job!

Nicholas Hooper is an amazing composer. He does such a fantastic job on every piece. And, seriously, there is so much... well, seems like plenty of work involved in producing the score of a film and quite a schedule. My favorite track from "Half-Blood Prince" is "Malfoy's Mission". What emotions you feel from that track. I also really like "Into the Rushes", "Weasley Wheezes", "Slughorn's Confession", "Slug's Party" and "Journey to the Cave". Overall, I love the entire score. Absolutely brilliant, fantastic and awesome.

I thought the Journey to the Cave piece was PERFECT for the scene, it was a visual and auditory masterpiece that gave me chills.

He is great..

Sirius_Padfoot 01-30-2010 03:45 AM

my favs are when ginny kissed harry, the killing of dumbledore, dumbledore's farewell, into the rushes, and slughorn's confession. I feel sad that Hooper won't be returning for the final two movies but family's more important! (I heard that he isn't doing the final movies because doing OOTP and HBP kept him from spending time with his family)

OMG!!!honestly so much of work...loved this insight to the scoring of HBP...i love the score in this movie and in OoTP no doubt...and the Dumbledore seen and the Possesion thing in OoTP was one of my favs...a chill runs down my spine everytime i hear that...nice and awesome work...wish and hope you win a Grammy....

It's so interesting to see how much work and effort is put into producing the score for movies like Harry Potter. It's obviously nothing like what I'm used to in concert or marching or jazz band or any ensembles I've participated in. There's so much composing and revisions and recordings! But in the end, the score sounded great, and I just have to remember to buy it.

Ga.b. 01-30-2010 07:55 AM

Wow,OMG!!!
My favorite is "Slughorn's Confession", "Into the Rushes", "Opening", "Malfoy's Mission", "The Slung Party" and very more.... :D

BonnieGinnyfan 01-30-2010 09:43 AM

TheElzaO 01-30-2010 10:00 AM

He is one of the best!!
My favourites are "Wizard Wheezes", "Farewell Aragog" and "When Ginny kissed Harry"! Few are so simple that I can play it on a piano! Simple but very good! :woot:

I received this interview in my mail today =D!

He's awesome! :D

Glitzmachine 01-30-2010 12:40 PM

Sometimes it's amazing just how much the music sets the scene, I was in tears ever so slightly (okay, perhaps completely) during the scene when Dumbledore died. I'd say the music was at least 50% responsible for that, too.
This interview was very interesting, especially for someone who wants to go into the music industry in later life. :)

JohnRossRotterdam 01-30-2010 01:24 PM

The second time I watched HBP in cinema, my emotions came out immediatly when Dumbledore felled off off the Astronomy Tower and the music started to play in that scene.... it was for the first time and unexpected since long that I cried with a film.....
I do sincerely hope that Mr. Hooper will win this award because HBP is the most beautiful, touching, and heartbreaking Harry Potter Score so far......

Opening, Snape & The Unbreakable Vow, Dumbledore's Farewell, The Friends and The Weasley Stomp are my favorites!!!!

reina9 01-30-2010 03:50 PM

my favourites are "When Ginny Kissed Harry," and "dumbledore's Farewell"

princess of*hp* 01-30-2010 07:22 PM

I still really need to buy that soundtrack. I'd love to do what Hooper does.

Padfoot7 01-30-2010 07:41 PM

That's really cool. :) The HBP soundtrack is by far my favourite so far.
