| | Newell: "I'm sorry about the Dursleys." Sci Fi Wire has a new interview with Mike Newell in which he talks about varying aspects of ' Goblet of Fire'. He expresses sadness at the loss of the Dursleys, explains how he condensed the book and likens the tale to real life events. Quote:
"I'm sorry about the Dursleys, actually," he said. "Because I think there's a kind of a convention in the movies that it's enjoyable to see the Dursleys each time. But, in fact, if you read the books, the Dursley incident is absolutely tiny and not central at all."
Quote:
"People ask me, 'What was it like dealing with such a fantastical story?' And it wasn't a fantastical story to me at all," he said.
"It was absolutely real. OK, it's got wands and stuff like that, but you could say that this was what it was like living in Europe in the '30s. There was something really bad out there, and people were either going to do something about it, or they weren't going to do something about it.
And that really bad stuff was creeping ever absolutely remorselessly forward. It was getting worse. And so there are all sorts of things that you can do, really quite recent manifestations of this, that you can point to. And you can make a very real world out of it."

Saying 'sorry' will endear him to fans. Great PR move!
I agree with the comments about the 1930's. There are similarities between the events pre-WWII and the magical war, most obviously the race thing.

They probably will be. David Yates was trying to get permission to film London landmarks for the Advance Guard scene. So if that's there then the Durlseys will be too because they have to leave from somewhere.

Yeah, too bad about the Dursleys, I thought that scene was so funny in the book. But, it's true, you have to condense stuff and the scene wasn't integral to the plot of the whole movie. Quote:

It doesn't bother me too much personally that the Dursleys aren't in the movie. They may add a bit of comic relief, but as Newell said, there is nothing really that important in their part in GOF which ties with the main plot. All it would have done was that it would have shown as the start of the joke merchandise by Fred & George.
They'll probably be in OOTP though. Unless they decide to cut that out too because the book's huge to make in one movie. Has it been confirmed that it's going to be just one movie?

And one of the scans from yesterday has a picture of one of the twins and it looks like he's flogging stuff, so the film-makers will have found other ways to make sure that point gets mentioned. Quote:

It's never been suggested that it'd be two.

i agree with him. it really isn't important to have them in the movie, because they really don't play a big part when compared to the tournament/voldemort/yule ball, etc..

The Dursleys really don't play much of a roll in GoF. However, it would have been nice to see some of the funny parts (I guess that's why you read the book). I do, however, think they need to be in OotP. It would be sad not to see them in any of the future movies.
