| | Newell: "Fiennes is cold and chilling." Sci Fi Wire has another new interview with ' Goblet of Fire' director Mike Newell in which he discusses how Ralph Fiennes portrays Lord Voldemort. He also speaks about the characters motivations. Quote:
"You have to have the actor to do it," Newell said in an interview. "And Ralph was the actor to do it, because Ralph doesn't chew the scenery, and he isn't a sort of 19th-century melodrama figure. He's absolutely real and cold and chilling and absolutely dedicated to doing bad. And as soon as you have that, you can do it."
Quote:
"What does he want?" Newell asked. "Why does he want to come back? What sort of a person is he that he wants to come back? What sort of a person is it who wants to impose a reign of evil? Does somebody who wants to impose a reign of evil actually see that it's evil? Or is it in fact for them a kind of good? So there was a lot of that stuff, which is the sort of thing that you discuss with an actor when he's getting to really concentrate on the part. And that was all very, very profitable."
Mike Newell also mentions that he hasn't read ' Half-Blood Prince'. Quote:
"It's another huge, wacky novel, and, simply, I've been busy," he said. "I obviously read the fifth one, because that has relevance. But, no, I didn't do that. Nor did I change my view of things for any of the stories that might be coming up. I've been very strongly encouraged by the producers and by Warner Brothers to think of this as a specific one-off film."

Something I just thought of, GoF finished filming in March earlier this year before HBP was released so even if he had read it, it wouldn't have changed anything.

^ Why should it? We know OotP is happening so it's not as if GoF is the end. Quote:

That's the job of a director. The only way to figure out characters motivations is to ask questions.

Well if things are set up for the future in the book then obviously they would've used that. But putting stuff in from later books would be wrong. Like PoA, Alfonso went a bit too far with the R/Hr stuff.

Cool interview. He seems very devoted to making sure Voldemort is portrayed well, and I'm sure that Ralph does just that. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they came up with. Quote:
because Ralph doesn't chew the scenery
Sorry, I'm easily amused today and that one does it for me. What a mental image (I know it's just an expression, but at face value it's getting to me - hehe).

I have to agree with the others as to what "to think of this as a specific one-off film." ...means.
We all pretty much know for sure there will be at least a book 5 movie, Dan, Emma, etc have all been signed to do it.
I am really confused also.

Very good questions to pose on Finnes character. It's my belief that if you play a bad person in a bad way it will be horrible . but, If you play a bad person in a good light and have the character trully believe what they are doing to be good, then you have got it.
example: (Ian Mcdiarmid)/ Palpatine-Star wars revenge of the sith.

i'm happy to see that Mike Newell is sOOOOOOO dedicated to the film and staying true to the characters in the book. I think Ralph Fiennes will do a good job because he also took time to "dive" into the character of Voldermort so that he would be portrayed properly on screen. I am so looking forward to the whole Goblet Of Fire "ERA" that's about to sweep us all away.(That includes the premeire, soundtrack, more interviews,TV appearances, magazine articles and the movie itself)

do you think that's wht he has a bit more Harry / Hermione scenes because he's been encouraged by warner Bros and the producers to act like it's a one off film??? he might have wanted them too happen like alot of other people. I think sometimes when they make these films the books don't mean a thing!!

Fiennes is such an excellent craftsman at his trade. I've watch so many of his movies and to each one he brings something unique and special. He brings characters to life in such a way few others can. It's really funny that so few actors or actress can do that today.
